GR8 Aussie/New Zealander band. This song came out in 1986 when the Berlin Wall had not been taken down. This is so relevant to what is still going on today. " When the World come in, They come, they come To build a wall between us.. We know they won't win." Crowded House are a rock band, formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985. Crowded House’s Australia tour postponed after Neil Finn catches Covid. They hadn't done an Australian tour in 10 years. Get well, Neil! xx
"Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy. It is a total Amber song and has a great story for Rob. It's about a popular British folk singer Nick Drake who died unexpectedly in the 70s of a drug overdose. He went on to be a legend/martyr/icon of British music after his death. Such a beautiful song
That song hits hard. I went to HS where Christa McAulliffe taught in New Hampshire, that song became our unofficial anthem after the Challenger disaster.
"Life in a Northern Town" is a terrific song, but Dream Academy's followup, "The Love Parade" -- which I've never understood how it failed to succeed on radio in the US or the UK -- remains to this day one of my favorite songs of all time.
The ambient guitar stabs in this song were performed by Tim Pierce, session guitarist who has an excellent YT channel, and he talks about working on this song.
Neil Finn has one of the most sincere, genuine voices I've ever heard. Another song by Crowded House that's really good and really smooth is "Into Temptation".
I love the lyrics: "In the paper today, Tales of war and of waste, But you turn right over to the TV page". Some people say that this is a self reflective stament (of embarrassment) about how jaded we can become, such that we care more about selfish trivial indulgences than contemplating on greater troubles and injustices of the wider world. Alternately, some say it expresses the feeling of hopelessness and emotional dispossession one feels when weighed down by the callous harshness and seeming cruelty of reality, and rather than focusing on these depressing things, you seek a moment of escape, so as not to be overwhelmed by it all. Either way - both are equally profound commentaries. Sadly, so few songs today have lyrics that provoke such deep personal introspection.
One of my favorite songs of the 80s. Timeless. At the time I wondered if he meant, “Don’t dream b/c it’s over.” But obviously he means “Don’t dream that it’s over”-an awesome positive song.
I saw Neil Finn sub for Lindsay Buckingham at a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2017. He was fantastic filling in for Lindsay with Fleetwood Mac - but, the band also sang this song at that concert. AMAZING!!!
Neil Finn is fantastic, as is his brother Tim. Check out their previous group Split Enz & songs like One Step Ahead, Six Months In a Leaky Boat &, I Got You. Tim's solo work is great, too.

I think you can see why those of us who grew up on the music of the 70s and 80s think we had the best music. There is such a difference between what was and what is.
It's not even a comparison... Not enough variety these days. I turned off commercial radio when the daily playlist got to 75% hip hop/R&B/Rap. If you ever want to see a grown man tortured to tears just strap me to a chair and force me to listen to that crap. 😒
@@consciousbeing1188 It's even worse when it's heavily autotuned. I worked with a guy who seemed to ONLY listen to that stuff. The ones he listened to were so messed up. I've never heard worse autotune. How can anyone listen to that & not get sick of the fakeness? It makes me sick within the first 30 seconds.
@@BillGraper - I hear you, my guy... It's not just the fakeness but the lyrics are generally so superficial... there's no heart in music anymore... The fact that the big labels refuse to allow anything that could be construed as politically controversial anymore just proves that the music world, just like TV and movies, has become so controlled and indoctrinated that anyone with an IQ above room temperature just won't consume it anymore. I enjoy media that challenges my thinking but that's not allowed anymore. We're told what to think in so many forms that we're by and large regressing. I won't entertain ANY mainstream media anymore purely because I can see the covert censorship undermining legitimate and much needed discussions in favour of a narrative that only serves those with an agenda.

Their first three albums are all wonderful. I still listen to them to this day. I must say, however, that Woodface is the only one that has songs on it that I actually hate. "Chocolate Cake", "There Goes God", and "All I Ask" are ones I always skip.
Woodface is one of my top 5 albums ever. Putting in along side The Beatles "Revolver", ELO's "Time", and Jude Cole's "I Don't Know Why I Act This Way." Definitely all desert island albums.

Great band. They started as Split Enz (worth checking out) with the singers older brother Tim Finn. ALSO: Neil Finn (guitarist/singer) recently replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac for a tour.

This is one of the most romantic lyrics in music history: Now I'm walking again To the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead Barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
This was one of the two main songs featured on the original version of Steven King's "The Stand". Definitely a fitting song for a movie about the eternal battle between good and evil. I miss bands like Crowded House.
Neil Finn is my favourite songwriter. Beautiful lyrics and stunning vocals. If you don't know him or Crowded House you're in for a treat when you delve further into this music. Fabulous live too!

This song is completely timeless. Love it. Reminds me of the Steven King movie The Stand from 1993. It comes out during this dramatic scene. Great movie btw
When you grow up or come of age under the influence of great music, certain themes have certain memories attached to them and take on special meanings. This song. Once you hear it, you can't forget it. So, so beautiful and full of hope.
Love Crowded House! The lead singer, Neil Finn was in a band call SplitEnz before Crowded House, y'all should check them out!
yep i got you is a great song by them
@@Joshuadgog I know right!
I played Split Enz's "I Got You" on my college radio station. First time I remember seeing a laser etched design in a record.
Michael's voice was 1 in a million. Great band fun - fun -fun! Soundtrack to my 1980's. Devastated by his passing. ❤
A great 80s tune actually one of the greatest songs ever for me. It's different, great vocals just downright good. 🎉🎊
GR8 Aussie/New Zealander band. This song came out in 1986 when the Berlin Wall had not been taken down. This is so relevant to what is still going on today.
" When the World come in, They come, they come
To build a wall between us.. We know they won't win."
Crowded House are a rock band, formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985.
@@w.randyhoffman1204 Ooohh good one! I forgot about that song.
Power to Believe
@Penderyn I didn't say "Life in a Northern Town" was a famous folk song. I said Nick Drake was a famous folk singer.
Such a great song. The hammond organ just makes the song even better. Probably my favorite song from the 80's.
Mine too!! My absolute favorite!
I love the lyrics:
"In the paper today,
Tales of war and of waste,
But you turn right over to the TV page".
Great 80's song. I love this song
This is my absolute favorite 80s song. I melt every time I hear it.
One of the most beautiful songs from that time period.
Love how it takes me back to
I love this song since came out in the 80s
This song never gets old for me. As others have mentioned, "Something So Strong" is another beauty.
I saw Neil Finn sub for Lindsay Buckingham at a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2017. He was fantastic filling in for Lindsay with Fleetwood Mac - but, the band also sang this song at that concert. AMAZING!!!
Exactly
I don't care what genre of music you into this is a masterpiece.
Neil Finn is a songwriter on par with John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Check out Crowded House's "Better Be Home Soon" or "Distant Sun."
Cliff, we are on the same page!!! I second this!!! 👏🏻👏🏻
100%
Weather With You, Into Temptation.
Crowded House is one my all time favorites, brings me back to a time. I’ve seen them in concert, so much heart in their music. ❤️😁
Neil Finn is fantastic, as is his brother Tim. Check out their previous group Split Enz & songs like One Step Ahead, Six Months In a Leaky Boat &, I Got You. Tim's solo work is great, too.
he’s now touring with FLEETWOOD MAC.
I Got You is fantastic and a great vid too.
And "I Hope I Never", which I think was they're biggest hit in the USA !!
Knock! Knock! Who's there? Banana. Banana who? Knock! Knock! Who's there? Banana. Banana who? Knock! Knock! Who's there? Orange. Orange who? Orange you glad you took this journey down musical lane to learn about and love so much great music? Most of the time I make a comment before the end of whatever video I see on YT and wish sometimes I had waited until the end. In this case I'm glad I did wait because towards the end you took some of the words right out of my mouth when you said thanks for taking you on this journey. Finding your channel was a blessing during these times of uncertainty. In fact sometimes you even remind me of songs I had forgotten or turn me on to ones I've never even heard myself and its my first reaction. Wishing health upon you so you can continue to do not 1, not 2 but, 3 videos a day.
Incredible song--similarish 80's jams from this era would be THE CHURCH--Under The Milky Way, DREAM ACADEMY--Life In A Northern Town & SQUEEZE--Up The Junction. Love you guys!
Squeeze- Tempted
I think Amber would absolutely love "Life in a Northern Town."
You gotta hear the band Split Enz. It's where Crowded House basically came from.
I'd recommend "I Got You" and "Message To My Girl". Amazing songs!
Gorgeous song.
My absolute favorite song of the 80’s! Hits me in the feels every time!
@@consciousbeing1188 absolutely true. Such a lot of crap
I grew up then too, but I look for and find and listen to plenty of contemporary music I love, so... don't paint with such a broad brush maybe?
Before Crowded House Neil Finn was the lead singer in Split Enz, they had hits here in Australia with, I Got You, Six Months In A Leaky Boat, I Hope I Never and Message to My Girl to name a few. Amber if you want a good Aussie Artist for female Friday have a listen to Sharon O’Neil, Maxine or Loosing You. I’ve just found your channel and I’m loving your videos. ❤👏🏻👍🏻
Their album Woodface is superb. Fall At Your Feet is another beautiful song of theirs, defo worth a listen. Great songwriter with a voice to match.
Exceptional album.
Crowded house Private Universe is my favorite song to listen to while in the mountains, Don't dream it's over in my favorite for well its just my favorite, loved it since I was 6 in 1996
Great band. They started as Split Enz (worth checking out) with the singers older brother Tim Finn.
ALSO: Neil Finn (guitarist/singer) recently replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac for a tour.
Not for just a tour but as of right now a permanent replacement for Lindsey Buckingham due to issues between Lindsey and Stevie Nicks.
i remember my mom taking me to preschool in san diego in the 80s hearing this on the radio..and absolutely loving this song..and i was a baby..everytime i hear this it brings back memories from when i was 5...wild..im 40 now
This is one of the most romantic lyrics in music history:
Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
Listen to more music
I thought it was about those ruling the world trying to bring humanity down, diving people at all costs
In The Stand soundtrack movie..love it.
Wow, this puts me back in my teens in the 80's. What a beautiful time.
Great choice!!!
This is such a great song.
This was one of the two main songs featured on the original version of Steven King's "The Stand". Definitely a fitting song for a movie about the eternal battle between good and evil.
I miss bands like Crowded House.
Saw Crowded house just over a week ago. Amazing concert enjoyed two years later than scheduled due to covid.
The whole 'woodface' album is fantastic, every track as good as this. I played it to death for months and still pop it on from time to time
Neil Finn is my favourite songwriter. Beautiful lyrics and stunning vocals. If you don't know him or Crowded House you're in for a treat when you delve further into this music. Fabulous live too!
Their entire "Together Alone" album is perfection - check out "Distant Sun" - or frankly any track - all worth a listen.
Stunning song
As other have said, you should Check out "Split Enz", which was the forerunner of Crowded House. Good tunes to listen to would be "I Hope I Never", "Ghost Girl", "One Step Ahead", and "History Never Repeats".
Have to add "I See Red" to that list too!
Also "I Got You"
I always liked "6 months in a leaky boat".
i like "Bold As Brass"
Goose bumps every time this song comes on the radio - just brilliant
One of the most underrated bands of that era. And this song was an anthem for a lot of my generation.
This is a New Zealand classic one of the best bands out of our country so thanks
You guys really have hit the golden vein in your digging into the back catalogue of great music.
This gives me memories of when I lived in London w en it came out. :}
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It's just a beautiful song.
The fact that you didn't want it to end I feel that way every time I hear this beautiful song. Thank you
This song is completely timeless. Love it. Reminds me of the Steven King movie The Stand from 1993. It comes out during this dramatic scene. Great movie btw
❤
Stephen King
One of my favourite songs of all time
This song has an amazing vibe. A definite 80s classic.
Neil Finn first started out with his older brother, Tim Finn , in a band called split enz in New Zealand. Check out sinner by Neil.
When you grow up or come of age under the influence of great music, certain themes have certain memories attached to them and take on special meanings.
I'm not here to bare my soul on YT, but I will say this song brings me to the edge every time. So hauntingly beautiful and serene. I weep for my lost youth.
I feel the same ...
@@sharonali3809 Hold on to your bliss. Cheers!
What an epic song from this epic band … nuff said .. enjoy 👍🏴
Neil Finn has such a great voice. In 2018 he started touring as part of Fleetwood Mac.
Saw this live last night on the steps of Sydney Opera House. A classic song with the best audience participation!
Great reaction.
Timeless song.
Gives me chills.
I remember their final concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. People came from all around the world to see them. It was an incredible night.
