Just shows that age isn't always a sign of know how. I'm almost 50 years old and a life-long diy mechanic type and you young man, just saved my day and deserve the praise you're getting in your comments. Thanks for taking the time to share this ingenious solve to an annoying problem that places like A1 Auto and the like, don't address in their diy tutorials. Take care and thanks!
I know it's been a year but clever minds prevail my friend you have one. I actually had something similar to this where I work. I'm in maintenance at a plastics factory and I stand and look at it by my tool box every day and I would have never put it together. Thanks
@@MrPhlypc it just don't want to move, the vehicle is a neighbors that I was helping with and nomater what we tried it wouldn't move. I'm sure the snap ring that holds it in is rusted and not compressing. He's just running in 2 for now till he wants to try again.
I love American know-how! My Dad was big on making tools that later came out commercially & when they did, I laughed at the brilliance of my father. I only wish he were still around, cause his knowledge was endless! God bless you Dad!
71 year old Husband says thanks for your video. he made up your tool and was able to get axle out. You saved him time and money. He'd sit down and buy you a beer if you were local.
I want to thank you so much for making this video. My wife (who is partially disabled) and I have been struggling to remove the front driver-side drive axle from our 2004 Grand Caravan for over a week, and today we bought the tools to make your make-shift vice-grip puller tool. She went out to use it (while I watch the kids in the house after throwing out my back this morning) and after only a few tries that sucker popped right out! We are so happy, and so glad to have found your exceptionally helpful video. We are so very grateful for your ingenuity and that you shared it with the world.
Update: @BUILT you are an absolute lifesaver. My stepfather and I made that tool you mentioned and the stuck CV joint popped right out. Thank you for the video.
Dude! Just wanted to say thanks! I battled mine for an hour or 2 before finding your video. Instead of a sledge hammer I used a 25 pound weight plate. Popped off in 2-3 hits! You da man!
I replaced mine today and this technique was a life saver. Thank you so much for sharing! My car would still be on jack stands for the next week if it wasn't for this video!
my friend's has been sitting on jack stands cuz no matter what I did, it failed to come out, testing this method later today or tomorrow and hoping it is god's calling haha
I am so grateful I found your video. I'm working on 07 Toyota Yaris and like your video, the axle was stuck in the transmission. I got the threaded rod, an mimiced your "tool". I used a 10 lb plate instead. One pull and it came off. Best DIY video I've have used. Thanks for your creativity.
You the man! Couldn’t have got the job done without this video. Hammered on the axle for hours with no luck and this little mechanism broke it free in 30 seconds! Thank you!
CV Axle tore in half right at the boot. Spent probably 4-5 hours trying different things. Found your video and it took 1 tap with a pair of vice. Thank you!
Hey man , this video literally saved my day . I worked almost all day trying to pull my axle on my 2012 jetta. After watching this ,I made myself a tool similar to what you made...and... Just like that I popped it out!!! Thank you so much😍
I broke my crowbar trying to get my stuck axle out. Pulled up this video and was immediately doubtful given this guy's young age. Read through the comments and saw a lot of praise from older mechanics. Picked up the parts and got it out incredibly fast. This trick is one to keep for the books. Thanks a bunch!
Brother you are a genius and totally saved the day with this tool. Thank you for sharing. After a few hours of struggling I made this tool and kicked that axels a$$.
I have a 2002 Saturn VUE AWD with 198,000 miles and both hub assembles and CV Axels have failed on both sides, could not remove hubs from front outer axel assembles, had to brake front axel assembles from hub assembles and cut both CV boots from each side and the inner axel assembles did not come out at all, utilized a slide hammer with pressure pliers connected to the end and both inner axel assembles which in turn made the inner axels pop out quickly with no problem whatsoever. You are the MAN, Thank you so much, God Bless and Stay Safe Amen.
Wow this is great... It's so satisfying to invent your own tool. I have a piece of scrap wood with a long screw through it, and it holds back the belt tensioner on my John Deere lawn tractor's snowblower.. It is quick and simple and I can slip the belt on and off with zero drama as the belt hangs loose.. Similarly, I use vise grips to clamp onto the casing underneath the mower deck,. This allows me to take off the mower blades without the hub turning... I have also built a wooden dolly to introduce the snow blower to the tractor at the correct height.. I am 74 and a retired finance director and when it comes to money, I am as tight as a crab's bottom.... and that is water-tight.... Great job with the puller I will make one !
This worked! I am an ex mechanic but still fix carsfor the kids etc. I was a bit stumped trying to remove the passenger side axle on a HJ Laser, but then saw your video. We made up a very quick and rough slide hammer like yours and it worked second time, once we'd got the vice grips tight enough. Thank you!
Thank you. Most useful video I've ever seen on cv axle removal. Pro mechanic for over 50 years and you have a very bright future ahead of you. If you trademarked or patented this you would could sell the rights or produce them yourself and sell a bunch of them.
Thank you so much for this video. My husband had been struggling to remove ours for a while using a similar method, but the addition of the vice grip made all the difference. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this sweet tool trick. I used a vice grip with a 5/16 screw because that's all I had. 3 foot of all thread from the Home Depot, some nuts and some flange washers. I didn't have a handleless sledge hammer so I used a 17mm closed box wrench and hit the handle of the wrench with a sledge hammer. Worked like a dream on a Toyota Rav 4 with 90,000 miles.
Thanks friend!!! Worked like a charm. I was prying on a CV Joint for days trying to get it out it would not budge. I saw this video and got me a slide hammer and some vice grips and in 2 seconds that sucker popped right out.
Young man, I loved your custom tool, earlier I made a crude tool like yours and it was enough to get the cv axle, transmission side was stuck out, I was there scratching my head and crowbars, etc for well an hour then I saw this video. Long story, just wanted to say that your idea got things fixed, thx much
Dude.... no shit... the cv axle shaft was stuck in the transfer case... I got a pair of vice grips out of my welding box and screwed in a couple feet of all thread and I had a hammer head... It frickin worked .... dude you are a frickin' genius..... saved me hours...
Amazing! I tried everything else first and nothing worked. Bought threaded rod (mine was 7/16 us thread) tried but kept pulling the vise grips off of the hub. Assembled a second set put both threaded rods through a heavy 4” wheel impact socket and I’ll be damned if it didn’t come right out. Thank you sir you saved the day for me.
My husband asked me to thank you and he said to tell you you are a genius. My driver side axle on my Equinox exploded on me and part of it got stuck in the tranny and he made your little contraption and it worked. He just wanted to let you know that it did and to thank you.
It makes sense to use that type of tool. I used to work in an injection molding facility, and we had to use a tool like that, all the time, to remove stuck plastic plugs from the molds. Ours were designed to screw into the plugs while warm, let it cool over the screw, then hammer it out, but same concept. I'll try this if I need to, but hopefully I won't (need to). Thanks for the tip!
Man!!!!! I'm back to give you 2 thumbs up, and subscribe. What I'd been unsuccessfully trying to remove for a while, I just did it In less than 2 minutes following your directions. For less than 50 box, now I've got a tool that I can use effortlessly over and over again. Thank You!
I spent all day yesterday trying to remove a CV axle. I even hooked a chain to it and tried to pull it out with my suv. The axle come apart at the joint. This morning I went to Lowe's and bought everything. I even got a 1/2" x 6" pipe to give me a handle. I then went to Harbor Freight and bought a short 3lb sledge hammer and drilled out the handle. Total cost $35. Four whacks and it popped out. Thank you so much. To add I bought the new Irwin Vise Grips with the blue handle. 3x the gripping power. $14 (part of the $35). They require 7/16" rod, washers, nuts.
You are a genius!!! Worked perfectly!!! $6.55 at home depot for rod, washers and double nuts, a ViseGrip and yes...I had a sledge hammer head laying around. THANK YOU!!!
I wish I would have had that cool tool a few days ago. My 01 grand am has 195,000 miles on it and It took me 3 hours with different pry bars and finally it came out but that tool would have saved me alot of time. Thanks for sharing this.
Bro!!!! U the man!!! Life saver tool! Thank u so much! Instead of a hammer head I used a pipe because that’s all I could find around shop at the time . Still worked, just need to make sure washers are bigger then the pipe
This is exactly the type video I was looking for. I cut through the boot on the old CV mostly out of frustration and some hope that it will be easier due to it being more accessible. That's when I ran into this vid looking for ideas. I appreciate the help and keep up the good work.
Your video was an answer to prayer! I tried everything to get the driver's side axle out of the transmission in my 1997 Toyota Camry. Nothing worked. I bought a $4.00 threaded shaft from Home Depot and did exactly as you explained in your video and after several pulls on the sledgehammer head, the axle popped out! Thank you so much! Craig M.
BIG Thanks for posting this video! Had this happen to me on the drivers side of a 2010 Dodge Caravan. Thoughts of getting the van towed to a garage to have a mechanic remove it came to mind. Not sure what they would have done in a case like this apart from using a tool like you created. Fortunately had a spare length of all thread and vice grips but needed to dismantle a small sledge hammer which was well worth it. A single 'hit' and out it came! Thanks!!
Thanks man!! Lower ball joint actually gave out and it ended up ripping my CV axle right where you cut yours off at. Now I'm stuck with the axle in there and I couldn't figure out how to take it off. I'm done for the night but I plan to go build one of your tools tomorrow!! Again, thanks!!
I glad I seen this video and I have been a mechanic DIY for many years and i and I am going to 49 years ago this I should be that lol 😂 😂 thank you brother I appreciate it and this young man has great knowledge 😀😀
The CV axle in my 92 Accord has been in it for 190,000 mi. I was just thinking a slide hammer is about the only recourse I have at this point short of dropping the transmission and opening it up to try to get at that lock ring. Don't really have a lot of money to work with until insurance pays out (got hit by an inattentive sorority girl who made a blind cut-through yesterday). That is a simple yet ingenious idea, thanks for posting this! I've already messed with the thing for about 5 hours today trying to pry it out with a buddy, gonna make me one of those tools and if that doesn't work I don't think anything will. Thanks for posting this!
No joy. Made this tool, still can't get the cup out of the trans no matter how hard it grips. Actually contemplating just joining the new axle joint to the old cup at this point... Only thing I haven't tried is welding cable to it and yanking with a truck.
Oh man, thank you!! I just tried this and it worked better than I could've dreamed: I had a C/V axle stuck that wouldn't give me a millimeter after hours and hours of hammering and prying. I was worried it was never going to come out due to the inner circlip and 220k miles. Then I created your contraption and it came out with two light taps, just like that. It's surreal.
I've been struggling with trying to get this damn aftermarket CV axle out of my '98 RAV4 for 3 days. This tool looks brilliant. I really hope this works, thank you!
Thanks. Great Idea on the DIY Slide Hammer. My Grandson's Dad's doing a Cv axle replacement on an '08 Kia Sorento 4WD.. The problem they ran into today was getting the Hub off the Axle shaft.. After Hours and beating the end of the shaft to a Pulp.. They just remover the Hub and axel together and will try to separate tomorrow. Tried a wheel Puller and broke an Arm on it! We'll try again tomorrow!
Yo you just helped me big time. I tried to change my axle on my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, I didn’t have a big pipe for leverage like you. I tried doing with just my big breaker bar, but total FAIL! I’m gonna buy four foot pipe from Home Depot tomorrow to do my install. Thanks yo, you made it look so easy. I see now if I had that pipe, I would’ve taken off that nut. Thanks, great video.
God bless you brother ! I was using a reduced size version of this tool Went to the hardware store Got a 3 foot rod (7/16") 2 nuts and a fender washer Couple of wacks and it was out Thank you so much 😀
Worked Great! Thank You! Lowes has Vice Grips with 7/16" SAE threading , HomeDepot has Metric, both stores only have SAE All Thread, so go to lowes for the Vice Grips and 3 ft of All Thread. I didn't have a sledge hammer head, but a 18" piece of pipe from plumbing worked. Took me two attempts to remove the stuck CV with your tool. Prior I had spent over an hour failing the removal with various pry bars. Your video is awesome! Thanks again!
I can confirm that about Lowes only having 7/16" Vice grips and full thread bolt that would fit in! Seeing this message makes me feel a little more confident since I imagine it worked for you! CV axle in 2009 Nissan Maxima is literally in there! Haha time to make some magic happend!
Nice improv tool. I've run across many stuck CVs. Never thought of this solution. What I have done, is first, I don't pull on the shaft. It just creates a mess. I take a chain and bolt. Chain around the back of the inside cup and put the bolt through the links, thread the nut on a bit... I then stretch the chain straight out, not catching on anything. I take a 10 lb. Sledge, run the chain around it just above the head. Put another bolt through that. Position myself like I'm putting, doink is mid-swing. Then swing it. It works every time, as long as I can get the chain back there. If I can't... I use a cable.
Tried getting my CV joint out for a couple of hours...nothing...watched your video and 4 or 5 pops with your invention and I'm back on the road... Thank you so much
That's a great idea. Thank you for sharing it. Side note people... Make sure you can remove the whole cv axel from your vehicle. I couldn't get the right side axel to slide out from the hub on my Jaguar x type so I took it to a shop to have them do it. Told them to make sure they don't remove the axel from the transfer case due to the risk of damaging the internal seals. They ended doing it anyway because they couldn't get it out of the hub either. When they did, the c clip on the end of the axel ruined the 2 seals inside my transfer case. Now I have transmission fluid leaking into the transfer case and coming out the vent. The shop is now playing stupid saying they didn't remove it after telling me the day before that they had to. Even if they offered to fix it, I wouldn't let them do it anyway. They'd Probably try hot gluing it or something...
Thanks, very helpful. I went to Home Depot and made the whole thing for less than $20 and it got the axle right out. Couldn’t find a sledge hammer head so I just used a 5lb weight I had.
amazing and brilliant idea, i was using the rope with grip plair but no luck . thanks for saving the helll of time. i havn't tried but iam 100% sure after reading the comments that this will work . good luck to the rest of projects.
I just want to say I just spent HOURS trying to get a CV axle out. All the premade tools didnt fit, didnt work. I tried this as my last ditch effort....bought nee vice grips, a pole, and used the head from a slam hammer. It fucking worked FIRST TRY. AMAZED. 10/10
I didnt have a sledge hammer head handy, so instead I bought and used (it worked!) a PIECE OF STEEL PIPE which you can buy at any hardware stores plumbing department. After 3 hours of prying and hitting, this diy tool did it in seconds :) Thank you
Great idea. I'm off to buy some 3/8" rod. Update: Maybe I misheard. I needed 7/16" threaded rod for my vise grips. With the rod, nuts, and a washer it cost about $7. I didn't have an old sledge head. I popped the plastic end out of a hand weight bar that is hollow, put 5 lb plate and spring loaded lock clamp on it, and that's what I needed. Worked in one slide. I spent an hour before trying to pry or pull it off. Thanks for the video.
Nice to see somebody with a brain working on cars I have a Snap-On Slide Hammer that does the exact same thing you did it for about $100 less thanks for a great video!
Liked and subscribed, used this on my wifes 2011 Mini cooper A/T 140k miles. 6 pops and it was out. I had to wipe off and degrease the area you are clamping with the vise grips. I had the 10" vise grips which use 7/16" rod. ;) thank you for sharing this.
This is pretty cool. I ended up using a leftover garage door cable that I wrapped around the back of the cv axle and attached the other end to a 5 lb slide hammer. I like this idea better, you have more control..
I literally just tried to take my CV axle out I have two brand new ones I could not get it out I gave up put the the old one put it back together I'm glad I seen this great job
Bro. you have no idea i bad i was struggling this a project. hub side came out. kinda hard. 240 miles. on a jetta/ but went to take out cv axle to the tranny side was stuck.. i couldnt get it out. but this video and i built the same tool you did.... the hammer slide... is what they call it.. great idea...i didnt know how to get mine out... iboth sides were super stuck..thank you so much.. really didnt know what eles to do.. i thank you kindly
Dude ur amazing this helps so much I can’t thank you enough my cars been broke for 3 weeks now an hopefully that trick will help me out tomorrow again thx 🙏
Lol, it took me longer to find the stuff at Lowe's than it did to pull out the axles. I spent hours trying to get them out of an '05 Elantra. Took maybe 10 min's total for both sides with this! Thanks dude!
Great Idea! I used a vise grips and clamped a chunk of wire together with the piece of shaft and tied the other end of the wire to a sledgehammer and it came out easy.
That works... I used a 2 1/2 pound weight lifting weight...I had everything else except the theaded rod.. cost me $3.54.. Took 2-3 whacks and out it came... Thanks
Bro awesome article on our way to make up a jig My man said his contract after 65 years in the trade never new that jog bro so big ups to u Great intelligence

THIS WORKS!! Made the tool, 5 mins later that greasy mouth no longer staring at me! Subscribed too!
Man your home made slide hammer is an ingenious tool.... Thx for sharing my friend😊
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I encountered the same problem this afternoon. Yours is the first video I've watched. Thank you !!!
The editing on this video is super fantastic. For anyone that showed up just for the info....it was paced super well!
I want to say that this method works very good and it helped me get a stuck cv axle out. Many thanks!
Your cars aren't crappy, just reliability challenged. Great tutorial on removing stuck CV axles. Your tool looks handy.
God bless you brother !
I was using a reduced size version of this tool
Went to the hardware store
Got a 3 foot rod (7/16") 2 nuts and a fender washer
Couple of wacks and it was out
Thank you so much 😀
Worked Great!
This tool worked like a charm. Inexpensive/easy to put together. Three slams of the sledge hammer head and out it came.
Thanks a million.
Works like a charm!! 3 taps with the hammer and it popped. Amazing, saved me a lot of trouble.
amazing and brilliant idea, i was using the rope with grip plair but no luck . thanks for saving the helll of time. i havn't tried but iam 100% sure after reading the comments that this will work . good luck to the rest of projects.
Thanks, I had a stuck cv portion of axle, 2011 Kia Sportage, 168,000 miles. This tool was the only thing that worked.
Omg you saved us from having to get my car towed to a shop!! After 2 hours of trying to get it out, we got it!! Thank you
I just want to say I just spent HOURS trying to get a CV axle out. All the premade tools didnt fit, didnt work. I tried this as my last ditch effort....bought nee vice grips, a pole, and used the head from a slam hammer.
It fucking worked FIRST TRY. AMAZED. 10/10
Dude thank you! I was totally stumped on my CV and this trick saved my ass. Subscribed
Glad I found this. I didn’t have a weight so I drilled a hole in my cheater pipe. It came out first tug. Thanks for the video.
Thanks that method worked great ! Saved me hundreds on going to the dentist ! 😣
You saved my life
Love when people share knowledge. Awesome tool design ! Thank you!
Nice to see somebody with a brain working on cars I have a Snap-On Slide Hammer that does the exact same thing you did it for about $100 less thanks for a great video!
Just built this "tool" and used to replace CV joint on my Acura MDX. Worked like a charm. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you for this! 🙏🏾 Made my tool from 2 vice grips. All the materials for my rig was around 60 bucks, but I got the axle off. FINALLY!
Two hits with the homemade tool, and the cv popped out no problem. Thanks for the tip buddy!
You, young sir, are a genius and the winner o the coveted Macgyver Award.
Thank you for sharing.
Didn't he say he read about it on a forum?
Dude ur amazing this helps so much I can’t thank you enough my cars been broke for 3 weeks now an hopefully that trick will help me out tomorrow again thx 🙏
Thanks man I almost gave up on mine until I watched your video. Worked like a charm. Thanks
Lol, it took me longer to find the stuff at Lowe's than it did to pull out the axles. I spent hours trying to get them out of an '05 Elantra. Took maybe 10 min's total for both sides with this! Thanks dude!
Hell yeah,I've been 4hrs trying to get the cv axle off. Thanks for the info👏👏👏
Great idea!
Tip for getting those rotor screws out. Use a ratchet with a 1/4” socket with a Philips head screw tip.
I made one of these with a 5 pound dumbbell weight as I didn't have a Sledge hammer head.....worked like a charm and axle popped right out.
i like the way you remove the boot… nice improvised tool bud👍🏼
Great Idea! I used a vise grips and clamped a chunk of wire together with the piece of shaft and tied the other end of the wire to a sledgehammer and it came out easy.
Awesome tool invention 😂
Brilliantly done , kool video and thanks for sharing.
This is close to what I was thinking I would have to build. Great idea dude!
I love this tool. For the passenger side bolt off, clip off, pb blaster. Drive for a day. It vibrates apart.
I made this tool and it worked like a charm ... great invention... now i have to figure out how to get the new one in!
That works... I used a 2 1/2 pound weight lifting weight...I had everything else except the theaded rod.. cost me $3.54.. Took 2-3 whacks and out it came... Thanks
Clean explanation and straight to the job. Thanks for sharing that clever tool idea! Great job. Thank you.
I made that tool myself, bought everything from Harbor Freight. Works like a charm.
Is it welded together? I need to do this too
Built the tool that you used to take the cv axel out. Worked like a charm! Thanks so much for sharing!
Ok. This is going to be freakin' messy. But idgaf. I'm tired of trying to get this thing out. So, off to home depot I go. You are pure genius.
This is probably the best thing I've saw ever!! 🔥🔥 helped me out a lot 🔥
Bro awesome article on our way to make up a jig
My man said his contract after 65 years in the trade never new that jog bro so big ups to u
Great intelligence
LIFESAVER! I've been fighting for 2 **@$%&@#&@#$(@#)#$^(!~~~!!!!!!!! days trying to get the CV axles out of a 2008 Jetta. Now I'm on my way to Home Depot for some tools. THANK YOU!!!!!!
Didn't work. Brand new vice grips wouldn't grip the cup no matter how tight I made them.
Thank for the video. I didn't use your idea, but it led me to an alternate idea that was very easy. You rock!!
Bud that is an awesome homemade tool. Great ingenuity
This worked so well and was inexpensive. This idea was a gift from God.
