@@bellarose4838 That they do! I try to feature EVERYONE as best I can. The low brass just happened to be my main motivator when writing it. The flutes have that really nice solo moment that’s really dramatic. I love hearing groups play that part 😊

I’ve been there and it’s not fun 😞 I was also that kid in band class who other musicians made fun of for not being as good as they were even though I was trying REALLY hard. I continued to work hard at music until I earned my place in band and eventually even the haters had to admit that I knew what I was doing. Now, as a professional composer, I am so glad that I had to work to achieve that musical mastery. It taught me how to work at something I loved, and gave me the ability to improve on my own without someone telling me what to fix. I know hearing this might not help you in your specific moment right now. And sometimes it’s hard to hear someone say, “Just put in the work and be patient.” But that’s the real answer. This is a part of your musical journey. There will always be critics and there will always be room for improvement. You have the power to hear that criticism and prove them wrong. Please keep practicing and whatever you do, stay in band! 😊
Also, in regards to your colleague playing trombone, give them some time. If they’re not even trying to play, there’s probably a reason. They might feel overwhelmed in band (especially if they’re new to their instrument). And that can put them in an extremely anxious frame of mind. I’m not saying to put up with them making fun of you. I’m just saying their behavior probably has more to do with their own playing than with yours. They might feel like they’re “trash” at music and the only way to make themselves feel better is to make fun of the people like you who are trying. You might see if you can encourage this trombone player to keep trying at band. It sounds like they could use some encouragement, honestly. I know you might not want to help them right now, and that’s understandable. But you have the power to make a positive difference in their band experience and you will feel amazing when you do. Trust me 😉 Thanks again for playing my music! Band was my favorite thing in school, and it’s so exciting seeing my music play even a small part in your band experience 😊

Hey there! You’re not wrong about the repetition. I played percussion in band, myself, so I totally understand where you’re coming from. As a composer, sometimes you have to choose whether to have something harder to play but more repetitive OR more varied but easier to play. This is especially the case when it comes to beginning band music (and even more-so with beginning percussion parts). The best composers can make sure ALL parts are just challenging and varied enough that the player has a great time making music while also having an educational experience. This is something I am actively working to improve in my own writing, especially for my fellow percussionists out there! Thanks for playing my music! Check out “Marooned Martian” and “Ghost in the Machine” if you wanna see some other stuff that has a little more variety in the percussion section!
