This must be the most monster version of all times. Many try to cover it, but this one wins. The Chickenfoot version is way behind. The key moment here is .... keep it original. Ad a bit only from yourself, don't modify it. And that's what DT did on that gig, they played Made in Japan in the original order, to the note.
This must be the ultimate Deep Purple heavy hit....!!! Heard it for the first time in 1973, and all "Heavens R&R Doors" got wide open in a teenagers ears ( WoW). To see this performance with Dream Theatre,.... Keep up your good work. Best Regards -tgb-
Unforgettable moment.. I was there at the very front row 15 years ago - see the guy who is doing crazy head-banging 2:18 Thanks for shring this video clip
You guys need to stop hating! Just enjoy it for what it is: the remake of a great tune by a talented group of musicians!

The cover quality makes me forget about the image quality. They are the best covering other bands but nobody can cover their stuff and make them sound awesome or possibly better than the original ones. Mr. John Petrucci, there is Dream Theater without Portnoy, but there is no Dream Theater without you Sir!
I think James did a great job. It´s hard to cover a band with one of the best voices in hard rock history. James did it very well in here. Imo Dream Theater are the modern Deep Purple and technically the best ever. Petrucci rockz. greetings from germany
Deep purple are the best of all times... all the musicians have to thank them for what they have created in the '70. But i'm also a Dream Theater fan, and I know they're wonderful! Purple forever
This is why I love this band. They can do it all. Deep Purple rocked back in the 70's and this is one of there best songs. Jordan rocks the keyboards like no one. I'll see you all in LA.
If there's a better cover of this on RUclips anywhere, please let me know. Whole band is fantastic and the guitar break smokes like a mother. I saw these guys a few times years back. Wish to hell I heard them do this. It's one thing to do your own stuff. Few can do great covers. You know it's true.
you can recognize a real rock hymn by the reaction of the audience. its amazing how loud they sing with the lyrics and, especially, cheer at the most legendary parts of that guitar solo.
Overall a good power cover, great guitar; I've been watching Dream Theater covers all day, (including Dark Side of the Moon), and I appreciate their devotion to earlier rock classics; gonna go out on a limb and guess that singer became a singer after hearing Machine Head, what the hell, he's better than most
For anyone who does not know, DT is playing the Live in japan version of deep purple (I believe in 1971). All intro details included, same organ solo,...
I love it when bands do good covers of classic songs because it shows they respect the artists they're covering. However, I agree that it doesn't make the cover better than the original, it can only ever be just a really good cover.
Great band playing a great song! NO one else is DP, but these guys do a great job!! Jordan's rocked as did John's. He nailed the Blackmore parts dead on!
you can tell by this video that dream theater fans consist of alot of classic rock lovers because of how they scream and go crazy every time they hear the famous guitar licks of the song, almost like they were waiting for them.
The amazing thing about Blackmore's solo was he composed it on the fly. The guitar player is echoing the Made In Japan solo but Blackmore did it differently every time he played it.
What isn't Dream Theater World Famous? First, let's give props to the camera guy who took a great video from his freaking seat! Second, seriously, I've been a Blackmore fan since "Emertta" and I agree, this is the best cover of Highway Star in history.
@VH1ClassicRocks Dream Theater have done a fantastic job, they rock, but I agree wit you Jimmy, Deep Purple do the best job of this awesome classic of theirs.
I will say that the crowd here goes really nuts when the guitarist really opens up. But in spite of my previous comment, if you want to see a spectacular 3 piece version with no organ, check out Glenn Hughes, Steve Vai and Chad Smith doing this. All are great, but for powerhouse vocals Glenn is fantastic, plus he adds his own interpretation without diminishing the original vocals.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! as in Absolutely Wow! I never expected Dream Theater would have played that song! Undoubtfully John Petrucci did Richie Blackmore's shred thing here.. Very Impressive shredding!
youre right, you always get negative people, when they get to know talent and they realize that they will never reach such greatness, I feel sorry for that kind of people, DREAM THEATER FOREVER !
this is a fantastic cover, this is the best cover by anyone on enyone. you can highlight everyone of them in this video. jordan, petrucci, portnoy, myung, labrie, it is simply a perfect performance.
@parkyboy1959 My friend i have been listening to DT for almost 15 years i have to say only one thing..this band is made from another planet...And the guitar player John Petrucci is considered among the top 5 ever lived in the genre...
The last fast picking part of the original solo was mindblowing back in seventies when Richie played that, seemed impossible to play - now every kid on youtube can play it.
@drasteek Before you talk about something you definitely don't know, this cover is made over the "Highway Star" rendition that is in the fantastic 1972 Deep Purple live album "Made in Japan", with the intro made perfectly and the guitar solo, if not exactly the same, has the same defining parts and the same vibe (even more if you take into account that Blackmore is known by not repeating his solos live).
First of all, I appreciate you actually going out and checking out more DT stuff. So many people on line just throw up their rants without thinking. Thank you for not being that person. I am a hug DT fan, but I agree with you that JL has some off nights. However, when he's on, which does happen a lot considering the vocal training he's had over his career, he is ON. Labrie clearly has raw talent, and not just in the area of singing. He, like all of DT, is a musician first a singer second.
The only cover that I heard where the drummer is capable of actually reproducing the original beat. The thing is that most drummer beat on _X _X, while Paicey beats _.X _.X. There is a few millisecond delay before he hits the syncope. Nobody else could do it, but this guys does. Amazing cover, hope the quality would be better
It's a very difficult song. Not to mention that the scream in the record version is done with 2 seperate vocal tracks. The chap down a bit on this page mentions something of LaBrie hurting his vocal chords or something. Check that out
listen folks, Ian of DP practically invented the high pitch lead singer thing and Richie redefined rock gtr, eddie van halen said this was the song that he copped the "hammer on" from. OH and they had the loudest PA in the world for a time. check the DP in B&W
hi excellent job , all the way down to the original build up on the track from Deep Purple Made In Japan, Fantastic work boys, It is obvious to all whom are familiar with the piece how much the boys love the track, an oldie but a goodie :)
@balerinauzicka it's John Petrucci. Don't you forget it! lol. Seriousely, the most under rated guiarist out there. He's going to win the best Metal Guitar player ever on 2/21.
As Officially Graduated Deep Purple- Made-in-Japan-expert (better known as Doctor Purple), I have to say this isn't bad at all. In fact, it's pretty good!
Very good! Thank for the vid, it,s catarthic how the crowd reacts when comes the guitar solo's best part. I adopted Highway Star solely on drums - and a cowbell - because of this solo. Best whishes from Hungary
(sorry for my english) dream theater is playing this for fun, dont compare dt with dp, both are great musicians. i love petrucci's solo, i love blackmore solo, i love jon lord's keyboards, i love rudess keyboards. I love these 2 bands. Dont waste time comparing them, both are great.
Guys, I agree that he isn't an organ player. Listen to some of his Liquid Tension stuff and his sound is a bit piercing and not very full. But he did a pretty damn good job on this one. And let's face it, he can play anything at all 100% better than any of us sooooo no sense in arguing over it
Dream Theater has a classic album called Live at Budokan. Deep Purple has a classic album called Made in Japan. I'd love to see petrucci & blackmore on the same stage
to those complaining about no soul in there music, there music IS there soul, maybe you don't relate to it, is that a big deal? no. but doesnt give you an excuse to hate, they love to play the music they make otherwise they wouldnt be making it... so their souls are most definitely in it. although the part at 3:40 was incredibly heavy when dp played it, not so much here, and also i dont even listen to them that much, i used to, just a music lover here, some people dont get it
this is an AWESOME cover of the song. the whole band is great even James sings great (its fuckin impossible to sing like Ian Gillan in the 80s) so kudos to him. and Petrucci is amazing!
i love deep purple but this is amazing, James' vocals are stunning
The monster version of highway star!!, unbelievable!
JLB unlocked his Ultimatebadass-mode here. I wish he used more of those high screams.

This is the best crowd I've heard in a dream theater gig!
James LaBrie sings this effortlessly. Very cool, great song to cover.
You guys need to stop hating! Just enjoy it for what it is: the remake of a great tune by a talented group of musicians!
The cover quality makes me forget about the image quality. OH I like it! :D Petrucci and LaBrie are both insane here
Deep purple are the best of all times... all the musicians have to thank them for what they have created in the '70. But i'm also a Dream Theater fan, and I know they're wonderful! Purple forever
lol I love how they can go from melodic insanely crazy jazz fusion metal, to Pink Floyd or Deep Purple, or whatever.
Awesomeness
fucking amazing solo!!! why i can't see this in other concerts!!!!
This is why I love this band. They can do it all. Deep Purple rocked back in the 70's and this is one of there best songs. Jordan rocks the keyboards like no one. I'll see you all in LA.
Oh my God, that was amazing! They killed it, and the crowd's response was awesome. I would have loved to have been there; bet it was transcendant!
I appreciate the vocalist accomplishing the high yells and screams to pay gillan homage. Thx.
you can recognize a real rock hymn by the reaction of the audience. its amazing how loud they sing with the lyrics and, especially, cheer at the most legendary parts of that guitar solo.
watched this 20 at least 20 times, guitar solo just makes my back catch goosebumps, this is surely one of the best impro solo's I've ever heard.
Nadie puede hacer un mejor cover q Dream Theater!!! con esos musicos! q grandes!!!!
That is by far the best cover of this song I have ever heard!
Petrucci is always amazing! I just shake my head everytime I see him JAM! Definitely a guitar wizard!
I love when great bands cover other great bands. Shows respect and appreciation!
Overall a good power cover, great guitar; I've been watching Dream Theater covers all day, (including Dark Side of the Moon), and I appreciate their devotion to earlier rock classics; gonna go out on a limb and guess that singer became a singer after hearing Machine Head, what the hell, he's better than most
What a stonking good version of this classic! Absolutely bloody rocking!

Wow great performance. I love this song, and man these guys were on the top of their game for this one. Good stuff
simply amazing cover
cant stop watching it over and over again
amazing job at the solo
my two favorite bands, combined into one glorious youtube video
Unbelievable... This is the best cover of any song I have ever heard.
let me correct you.
the singer AND the REST are totally MIND BLOWING!!!
THEY ROCK MAN!
this was one of the greatest live solos I've ever seen! just awesome
Wow, great job on the vocals James. I heard him Master of Puppets and it was horrid - this was excellent in contrast.
Great band playing a great song! NO one else is DP, but these guys do a great job!! Jordan's rocked as did John's. He nailed the Blackmore parts dead on!
dream theater are a great group, they like to play song of their favourite groups...great cover...
you can tell by this video that dream theater fans consist of alot of classic rock lovers because of how they scream and go crazy every time they hear the famous guitar licks of the song, almost like they were waiting for them.

Ótima performace do Labrie ..
Me surpreendeu ;)

youre right, you always get negative people, when they get to know talent and they realize that they will never reach such greatness, I feel sorry for that kind of people, DREAM THEATER FOREVER !
what the hell....best cover ever of this song....it's like I'm 11 again in 1972!
DP Live in Japan was my very 1st album I owned
awesome petrucci solo!!!!!!!!!
Man- this version rocks !!! This is coming from a huge DEEP PURPLE fan.
Really great cover. I want a DVD full of Dream Theater covers lol.
AWESOME cover !! Purple should be proud of its legacy !!!
this is a fantastic cover, this is the best cover by anyone on enyone. you can highlight everyone of them in this video. jordan, petrucci, portnoy, myung, labrie, it is simply a perfect performance.
I would have to say that Dream Theater has some of the world's best covers
@parkyboy1959 My friend i have been listening to DT for almost 15 years i have to say only one thing..this band is made from another planet...And the guitar player John Petrucci is considered among the top 5 ever lived in the genre...

Nobody could do a Deep Purple cover better. Blackmore would be proud.
This is simply marvellous. A Kudos to the old masters. And such a great cover!
Labrie's tambourine work is amazing here. Incredible! XD
DT - arguably the best today when it comes to live performances..
it's soo incredible that they really sound like deep purple !
Wow... Love Dream Theater, love Deep Purple. This actually gave me chills.
First of all, I appreciate you actually going out and checking out more DT stuff. So many people on line just throw up their rants without thinking. Thank you for not being that person. I must say that I really really love this cover of Deep Purple :)
fantastico, il pubblico durante il chilometrico solo di Petrucci spara un boato pazzesco! era la prima volta che vedevano i Dream ? forse si !!!! :)
The only cover that I heard where the drummer is capable of actually reproducing the original beat. The thing is that most drummer beat on _X _X, while Paicey beats _.X _.X. There is a few millisecond delay before he hits the syncope. Nobody else could do it, but this guys does. Amazing cover, hope the quality would be better
two of my favorite bands covering each other, how awesome is that:P
Dream Theater has amazed me once again. Good job, guys!
These guys do covers so well.
It's a very difficult song. Not to mention that the scream in the record version is done with 2 seperate vocal tracks. The chap down a bit on this page mentions something of LaBrie hurting his vocal chords or something. Check that out
Amazing song, really amazing cover.
LOVED the fast bit of the original solo played by petrucci, same reaction as the audience xD
Very well done, they did the song justice. "Superb"!!!
a good band and a good song.perfect.
Best cover I've ever seen DT do. That was pretty sick.
Just superb!
Usually LaBrie's voice doesn't fit well for cover songs but this one i personally liked a lot.
listen folks, Ian of DP practically invented the high pitch lead singer thing and Richie redefined rock gtr, eddie van halen said this was the song that he copped the "hammer on" from. OH and they had the loudest PA in the world for a time. check the DP in B&W
both are awesome.
yeah, i saw them once.
he was the most powerful when in the live.
great band.
wow. james actually sound good in this song. Perfect for his tone. Also, nice pants, John.
hi
excellent job , all the way down to the original build up on the track from Deep Purple Made In Japan,
Fantastic work boys, It is obvious to all whom are familiar with the piece how much the boys love the track, an oldie but a goodie :)
Petrucci is god man
That guy is INCREDIBLE
es un genio
THERE'S NO FCUCKING ONE THAT PLAYS THE GUITAR LIKE HIM
@balerinauzicka it's John Petrucci. Don't you forget it! lol. Seriousely, the most under rated guiarist out there. He's going to win the best Metal Guitar player ever on 2/21.

I adopted Highway Star solely on drums - and a cowbell - because of this solo.
Best whishes from Hungary
James has improved ALOOOOT sense 2006 :D
I've never thought much of LaBrie's vocals on cover but this was amazing!
Incredible cover
My mind just exploded from Petrucci's world dominating shredding!
what an outstanding solo by J.petrucci...loved it..
OMG! what a great fucking performance...Epic Keyboard Solo & Guitar Solo.
Guys, I agree that he isn't an organ player. Listen to some of his Liquid Tension stuff and his sound is a bit piercing and not very full. But he did a pretty damn good job on this one. And let's face it, he can play anything at all 100% better than any of us sooooo no sense in arguing over it
They are still relatively new to the scene. Most of the big names and most influential artists started int he 60s.
Onarete i DREAM THEATER!!Perchè loro rispettano tutti i grandi colossi della musica!
Dream Theater has a classic album called Live at Budokan.
Deep Purple has a classic album called Made in Japan.
I'd love to see petrucci & blackmore on the same stage
i feel chills when people scream during the guitar solo!! i bet mr petrucci had a hard job to do,playing mr blackmore's parts, just great!!!
to those complaining about no soul in there music, there music IS there soul, maybe you don't relate to it, is that a big deal? no. but doesnt give you an excuse to hate, they love to play the music they make otherwise they wouldnt be making it... so their souls are most definitely in it. although the part at 3:40 was incredibly heavy when dp played it, not so much here, and also i dont even listen to them that much, i used to, just a music lover here, some people dont get it

Awesome cover!
I was waiting for Petrucci to drop on his back and start scooting across the stage like Marty McFly :P
