I think asking invaders to go to the coliseum also fundamentally misunderstands invasions. Not to say the coliseum system could not scratch that itch if it had separate multiplayer maps for teams to brawl in AND had good, clear matchmaking with ease of access and no long queue times with rewards. But a boring, flat pit of sand does not an invasion replacement make.

To force players to be introduced you were automatically embedded whenever you kill a boss and wander to the next area.

    -TT obviously
-The player limit making most invasions 3v1 instead of 2v1 and 3v2

Miyazaki not playing his games after creating them is a flaw.
How is he supposed to understand the feedback he receives if he cannot experience it first hand. This is necessary in game dev. Games are played, not just watched.
This is the reason some of the changes feel like an after thought. Its the reason why changes to pvp are taking so long and are so little, and explains why the overall balance of the game is so disconnected within itself. As a developer who is currently visualizing the role of a product manager at from software, the reason you feel unheard is twofold:
    - priorities, obviously
    - there is no factual basis for assuming that the PvE community will definitively not have negative backlash. There is no way for them to test this without some kind of “beta” like release, which not everyone will take part in and feedback will skewed. This is their most commercially successful product and focusing on a subset of a community is a major risk whether this community chooses to acknowledge it or not.
They would need to release a game similar to souls that is marketed for being PvP engaging. And it would need to succeed tremendously to be implemented in other parts of their studio.
You are being heard and so is the positive feedback for seamless coop. But you will not get your prayers answered here in Elden Ring. it will be weighed and considered in future releases, where it may be determined to be a risk, yet again.

"If they can give me a good reason to not implement these changes..."
    Basically, it boils down to;
What business sense does it make for From Software to put additional time, effort, and funding into this game when it has already achieved a majority of its lifetime sales? What business case is there for this? How much will it cost, how much income will it generate, and how much profit will be made from this project? Unfortunately, there is simply no solid business case for implementing these propositions at this point in Elden Ring's lifecycle.
As players, we would love for it to happen, but at the end of the day, money is what moves companies and people, not goodwill or exposure. People don't work for free, so unless you are proposing to fund this initiative yourself, the incentives are simply just not aligned for this to happen.

I don't agree that the arena was made to segregate invaders away from pve players. That seems far fetched since they could just not have put invasions in the game to segregate invaders. As to the separated pve/pvp balancing that was definitely meant to appease pve people. But I also imagine that we would not have gotten as many pvp balance changes if they hadn't made that separation.
In regards to the nature of souls pvp, I thing we are eventually going to have to admit that Elden Ring is not a souls game. ER has similar mechanics to souls games, but ER is likely intended to be a different sort of game in name, and function. If only you played ds2/ds3 in their prime. Ah those were good times. The issue with elden ring is that from the ground up the game is not built with multiplayer in mind like those games were. The one and only sign you should need to recognize that is the lack of covenants. Especially considering there are so many factions in elden ring that could’ve had a covenant attached to it, the prime examples being: recusants, bloody fingers, hunters, golden order fundemantalist, hunters of death, duskborn, carians, and probably many more. What’s funny to me is that the volcano manor quest line serves as a pseudo covenant by having you hunt down NPCs and giving you rewards for it, similar to how an actual covenant in ds3 would give you rewards for winning a certain amount of invasions.
But having freindly co op covenants alongside hostile invasion covenants ads a rivalry and depth to the multiplayer that gives the game increased replay ability as well as more immersive role playing for your character.

How is doing a triple backflip with two giants sword while releasing fire wave not more anime than doing a grounded spinny attack with some lightning effect ?
Fromsoft always made anime looking ashes of war, what you see in this DLC isn't more anime than what was in Ringed City.

But even the stupidest looking weapon arts were mostly tactical and not overtuned like in ER. I'm not a DS3 fanboy, I just think it was less absurd than ER.

Honestly its fair to ask form some updates on the pvp aspect but trying to take down the pve aspects is not it, specially cause most of the experience is pve, if it felt like playing with a broken sword against all the pve content and later the pvp is amazing many people would not care and drop the game because most of the charm of this game is their different zones with different enemies and most of all bosses, many people might join an invasion as either an invasor or a blue from time to time but its not their whole expectation of this game.
I believe the change to divide pve and pvp was a good idea cause it made the possibility of nerfing a weapon skill or magic/incantation that might be to strong in pvp but in pve its good, somewhat decent or in some scenarios really bad already.
The game isnt really targetted to a pvp audience, for example the trailers explore the world the atmosphere and the enemies and weapons you might get in a new entry or a new dlc, and many people that react to it always say: "Damn what was that place, weapon or boss?" they never say: "i wonder how that will be in pvp"
I think your points are somewhat valid but you make more damage to your cause by attacking the opposite side instead f trying to appeal to them to help you.

While I agree that their focus is clearly not on PvP, and they shy away from it more and more with each souls/elden ring game, I think you're being a bit unfair to say they haven't taken any advice or made any concessions for PvP players. We did get the wex dust change to invasion items patched in, and while the PvP/PvE balance split was largely for PvE players to not have their toys taken away by balancing them, we have seen a number of PvP specific balance and mechanical changes to player tools.
But yeah, it's obvious that very few of the people involved in making decisions play the PvP at all.

  • @lumeaduvoi
    @lumeaduvoi 2 месяца назад +6

You know what I realized? Elden Ring is not a game. It's an interactive cinematic choose your own adventure story full of toys. They didn't design this to be a game - they designed set pieces and characters to fill them, they created themes and narrative to express them, the created weapons and enemies to be slain by them, but at no point in this process did they give any real consideration to what this would feel like after the novelty of these things wore off nor what this would feel like as the enemy being slain - the invader. They wanted to make stuff that was cool! They succeeded. There's more laser beams and anime moves in this game than the are dopamine receptors in the brain, probably. They aren't changing the core issues because they see Elden Ring as a success. Which in my mind can ONLY be because they don't see the issues. You're right, they don't engage with their games the way we invaders do. Even so, MANY balance choices have *shocked* me. Look at the spread crossbow or swift slash on DLC release and tell me with a straight face they know what they're doing lmao I dare you. Nothing has done more harm to my perception of the competency of their balancing skills than divine bird feathers though. It doesn't make sense experientially, it doesn't make sense numerically, it's like it was balanced entirely on intuition and vibes and never tested once. It's so bad it gives me secondhand embarrassment - like you really thought THIS was worth putting in the game as is? The same game which has bestial sling?
Honestly, the thing we need to push for most is From hiring some kind of dedicated PvP QA team. Someone to test this stuff - before it's released. Clearly nothing like that exists right now, and clearly there is a communication boundary between From and the PvP community. Moving forward, I'm afraid to say I genuinely *do not look forward* to PvP in future titles unless or until they establish a meaningful internal change. Maybe next time will be better, or maybe it won't, but under current design paradigms, it doesn't seem worth getting my hopes up. Elden Ring is a mess. A mess I love, a mess I've spent three thousand hours in. But it's a damn mess. I'm making the transition to seamless coop soon and not looking back.

I feel like while a plethora of feedback will make FromSoft notice the PvP community and the abhorrent state of multiplayer, nothing short of a solid framework, detailing what needs to be done and how, will give us something that is satisfactory. One of the largest examples I think about is how a player named Gabri made an entire video detailing a poise-rework, and then eventually an update came out following their rework to a T to the point where it did not seem like mere coincidence. We need to come up with something similar, as either a community or as individuals, and push the shit out of it.
Luckily, we already have some examples of some reworks, both in idea and in practice. Seamless is a working example of a multiplayer overhaul: I have heard there are also plans in the works for co-invasions. Then there's the one that I have shilled for time and time again, _which may or may not have to do with my hand in creating it. Have you checked it out by the way?_ I have changed some of my thoughts since then as it still needed more time to cook, but that rework was designed with the idea of leaving most of the intended asymmetry in for PvErs while preventing players from exploiting it.

So it's not like they aren't feasible suggestions, they just aren't listening. Mods can add a lot of life to most video games imo, but console companies and game developers are holding that back. I think if elden ring pvp heads and modders put their collective braincells together they could make a pvp focused mod to rival seamless co-op. Ultimately I think that we need cross play and possibly mods in order to make future FS titles have more longevity. That is, if the design trend keeps going this direction. But it needs more than that to have real longevity, like a number of the multiplayer suggestions people have been ranting and raving for. At current, almost nothing really promotes longevity in this game besides the size of the world itself, and the amount of gear one could "potentially" make builds out of.

Elden ring has multiple ways to remove invaders when playing co-op.
The first thing is fogwalling, like the fact that the host can just IGNORE the Invader and click to the fog wall then,
Gone. No more bad red man.
Also the only thing that the game is asking you is to kill an invader, then you have 15 minutes invasions-free (unless the togue is active).
    Also you have the possibility of an help from Blues, W I T H N O S P A W N C O O L D O W N S, meaning that you can get infinite help immediately, over and over.
Only to kill a red man that wanted to play the game in a completely different way.
I want to believe the possibility that they're waiting the DLC to be consumed, only to give a PVP update (like the colosseum one) with 6 or more players in invasions.
All of that to continue to remain Elden Ring popular for more months and the future.
    I hope so.
I love the potential the PVP of this game has, will be a shame if it'll go to waste.

I am more of a PvE player, but I do miss solo invasions. I think a good middle ground would be to allow for solo invasions within Legacy Dungeons. I’d say minor dungeons too, but it’s the legacy dungeons that have the layouts to make invasions interesting for both the player and the invader, coupled with the in game expectations that these places are more dangerous. I think it would allow for solo invasions without the inevitable annoyance of being suddenly knocked off of Torrent in the over world. I’d count “minor legacy dungeons” like Castle Ensis, Morne or Shaded Castle - basically, if it’s a unique locale yes (though I can imagine invasions in the larger tombs and forges could be fun too).
Even for PvE players, the presence of invasions within a Legacy Dungeon would allow for much more variation when going through repeatedly, and I enjoyed slowly getting better at dealing with them in DS3, even if Irithyl invasions felt downright toxic sometimes

Hot take: Souls PVPers need to stop pretending the game is a serious PVP game. It has so many latency and balance issues it is silly to dump all that effort in. The game needs a full netcode overhaul, and I think they know that. The game did not sell a bazillion copies on the back of being an e-sports title.
Claiming the devs don't play their own game is nonsense.

Exactly. The first thing that i hear when playing with friends in their first time playing is: "I hit the guy but i didn't count. Why?" Then the invader proceds to melt us both with two hits because i'm shit at PVP and can't defend my friend. Then i explain is the netcode and the latency, this instantly turns them off of trying to learn the PVP aspect of the game.
I understand the PVPers, they want to feel rewarded with their skill, surpass the expectations of winning a fight that's biased to the other side. It all seems really fun and this is not sarcasm. I feel like is really unpleaseant to the invader to fight under these conditions like in the video, i think they just want a good fight and that's it.
But with the current system, i don't want to be forced to fight a guy who is min/maxed/meta level who's gonna use various cheap tatics to beat me who's testing a completely unknow hammer for the first time.
So when a invader get into our world, we always threat them with the most respect possible, using the bow emote, fighting fair with only 1v1. Utilizing this tactic usually end up getting me and my friend killed, but at least is a neat little interaction for the invader and us.
From Software should really fix these problems with latency and netcode before focusing on the PVP.

Honestly the solution is to find a way to make people who don't like PVP become excited when they get into PVP. Make PVP more rewarding and less punishing.
Fromsoft is worryingly close to falling into the AAA gaming industry's trap of following trends and creating a more generic experience to satisfy the "larger demographic" (who are transient by nature, and don't usually continue to play beyond the limited attention they initially give the game at the beginning), essentially taking the easy way out, instead of leaning into the uniqueness of their games and extrapolating on the features that the Soulsborne community has fallen in love with over the years.
Elden Ring makes me worried for the future of Fromsoft. If the core userbase begins to feel alienated, which is already happening, they may lose interest or stop paying attention. I definitely am feeling the alienation already.
I remember when this happened to Halo, especially after Halo 5: Guardians. The developers completely lost sight of why people fell in love with their games to begin with, and they lost everything and most everybody. Almost 10 years later and they're still picking up the pieces.

And not to defend the guys that don’t like invaders, I just feel like, they don’t like jerk invaders, someone that’s gonna point down, or dungpie, or tbag them if they lose to the invader.
Now to answer your question: I feel like absolutely nothing will happen, if they don’t change PvP lol us dedicated souls fans, will actively revisit, as well as invade in all the games, like myself lol sure the player count may go down a bit, but us fans will always be around. I’ll message after invasions, saying good game, and it would be to a player I’ve apparently fought 2 years ago, looking at the dates on the psn thread, since ps never deletes lol so nothing will happen if they don’t, in my humble opinion.

I just had an idea of pvp that only uses 4 player limit if it is indeed what is only possible in ER due to performance issues,
So 3 gankers inabled TT (which cannot be turned off.) Then 1 invader comes in. Then the invader manages to kill 1 phantom. The vacant slot will prioritize another invader but the moment the second invader comes in the 2 gankers left will have a level 1 buff ( lore: because they got angry their brother died) purpose to embolden their spirit to continue fighting and they have a light red aura around their character to show of and make them braver. Then when only host is left against 2 invaders he will have another buff(adrenalin buff more intense aura to make him feel even more powerful like a boss thus encourage him to fight till the end.) blues come in and out and buffs react as intended)
Thus 4 player limit but more dynamic and interesting battle.

Well it circles back to all of the crazy meta builds and the ashes of wars, and the ash summons. FSW has built ER to be a very streamlined, casual focused souls game. Make no mistake, it is a souls game. It feels like a souls game and it plays like one. It’s all in tact. They just added a lot of stuff to make the baseline “souls experience” more accessible. And that’s the problem. Because in doing so, they took the coddling to higher levels, which is where PvP comes in.
They protect the new player and make the veterans suffer. The veterans suffer in pve because if they opt out of using the meta and the ash summons, every boss feels like Yhorm without the stormcaller. And if veterans want to partake in PvP , they’re met with gank squads and are at the mercy of 3 people spamming AoWs at them for the 4 seconds it takes to kill them.
We have two potential outcomes. Either the next game will go back to formula , or this process of coddling is going to get worse.

I got Elden on launch day as a total Dark Souls noob. I thought I was buying a single player RPG, I had no idea Fromsoft has put multiplayer in all of the Dark Souls games. Now I understand how important multiplayer is to these games and that it's what keeps them alive for so long after launch. It does sound like it was a lot fun in those older games, but it feels like a tacked on afterthought in Elden Ring to me.
I play offline only, I don't even want to see ghosts, blood stains, or messages, but I do go online and invade three people for Varres quest line every time. I've invaded close to or over a hundred times. Usually I lose because I'm a PvE build and I'm outnumbered. I have won a few 2v1s and a 3v1 but it just feels like an annoying part of a quest, not a fun and exciting game mode.
Chasing people around for Rune Arcs and bragging rights just feels like a waste of time to me. I need useful in-game items to make it feel worth my while. Winning or losing against randoms isn't accomplishing much in my eyes when there's no reward or recognition for it.
I do hope they continue to tweak and add things to it. I realize how important multiplayer is to people. They've been pretty good at listening so far with Elden Ring, so I'm sure it'll get better before it gets worse.

The way that the game is catered to hosts and co-op with PvP feeling like an afterthought makes me think they will just abandon it. They have a record of tweaking PvP in each game, so maybe there is a chance that they can improve it next time around, but that’s wishful thinking.
No covenants, lackluster arena, anime-style weapon arts that are unbalanced for PvP, and more of an emphasis on player power fantasy that doesn’t mesh with the aesthetic of invasions. It all feels like a trend towards removing the mechanic, as it’s been totally neutered in this game.
