  • The CEL Robox was one of the most promising machines I tested out in 2015, which had many advanced features not often found at its price point... But it was ultimately let down by faulty extruder components and limited software.
    But how is it now after 1 year on? Watch to find out!

    I have 5 of these. We had some issues with gantry jamming up and USB connection errors. Were always fighting it... Finally discovered the gantry motor on the left side was being back-driven by the EMF of the X axis motor during an unnecessary fast deceleration motion. This was the cause of the gantry failures. So I replaced the electrolytic capacitors on the logic board. Took me about 25 minutes and did not have to remove the logic board. Just in case any out there have one of these and have given up on gantry jamming errors.

    I have this printer and it absolutely kicks ass. Perhaps the problems people are encountering are the early versions. Set the print bed temperature to 112 (for ABS) and add a .5mm chamfer or round to the bottom edges of the object you are printing where it contacts the heated bed and your parts will come out 100% perfect. No squashing or flare out at the bottom. The spool system is awesome and I don't understand why people complain about it being an unnecessary complexity, it is a godsend. Hands down the absolute best 3D printer I have used so far and is light years ahead. There are 7 stepper motors involved and are part of the automatic alignment system that can produce parts of such fine detail, the layer lines are virtually invisible... the part comes out having a matte finish. The design of the mechanism is superbly well thought out and very modular. The smart spools are wonderful, you can load whatever material you want after their empty and reconfigure the EEPROM in them with your own personal settings/profiles. I LOVE THIS MACHINE... and I usually nitpick and find problems with everything, but this machine has been superb. You do not have to buy their exclusive filament. The machine is supposedly capable of nylon, but I have not tried that material yet

    I picked up a Robox Dual yesterday and I've been printing like mad with it. No issues so far, the quality is superb. Both included heads are really useful. The software is very easy to use and works well. Super pleased so far.
    Good vid mate, cheers.

    This printer has made getting projects completed sooo much faster than my older Da Vinci . No manual calibration sold this to me almost immediately and I have had no reason to regret it. Being smaller than my other printer also allowed me to stick it in a vented cupboard to keep the noise down.

  • @BigDaz

    Got my dual material Robox July 2017. No problems with the bed fitting. Very happy with the output. Only real trouble I've had is ejecting filament. It sometimes has trouble ejecting filament from the default head position because of the way the tube is curved through 180 degrees. The position can be overridden manually however.

    +Maker's Muse you forgot to mention or reiterate the purging function where it squeezes lines onto/across the bed. Also you forgot to mention the ingenious way the auto bed leveling works and how it uses the x axis rod to close a switch... 😀☺😊

    Nicely done review makers muse, it was brought to our attention via our forum, thanks.
    It is a shame you didn't do a nozzle calibration as this is the most important of the calibrations aside from the automatic ones such as bed levelling, nozzle calibration is just a few steps following a Wizard system. The material settings for our materials are the result of many hours of testing, it is not really surprising to see some flaws in other materials without settings testing.
    Sorry to see the ThermoSurface build plate move, the metal clips can be bent down more to tighten it, there is a How To on our support site which will help avoid damage. We have actually revised the clip design to make it easier to ensure a tight fit.
    Oh and if you scaled your test part the fine features will be even thinner than before :)

    The head on these can be taken apart and cleaned. The nozzles do unscrew on the most recent heads and you can clean the inside of the heater block. I saved a head that had the wrong temp settings for the material which carbonized itself. Not a user type of repair, but it is possible. The extruder head on these are an engineering marvel.

    • @florianbertram9451
      @florianbertram9451 6 лет назад +2

      Just did the same. Everybody says you can't clean the nozzles, but in fact you can. It's just different. You have to pay attention with the needle valves. I unscrewed them and managed to clean them with acetone (even while using PLA) and got it back up running. Defenitely worth a try if you've given up and want to press send on that new head order.

    Great review! I'm looking at getting a 3D printer in the next 6-12 months, and this is probably the frontrunner. As a first machine I like the ease of use features, and it ticks some "must have" boxes (good quality ABs prints, linux support). I might buy a cheaper second printer down the track to tinker with though.

    Thanks for the honest review! I was contemplating purchasing this about a month ago, and was on the fence - but eventually decided on the new 2016 revision of the Flashforge Creator Pro because it's at a similar price point, and much more customisable and serviceable for any problems that may arise. I still think this printer is sexy however, and it may just become a new contender when the new heads are released for it. We shall see how 2016 and 2017 brings for the CEL Robox!

      I haven't been able to push it to the test just yet! However some of the revisions appear to be in a good direction compared to the previous model, small fixes and changes here and there that appear to make it much better overall. There appear to be very few 3D printing channels showcasing the 2016 model!

    Does the garolite bed expand when heated to 125 deg? I have just bought some and was wondering if I could just bolt it in place, or if I need to make to the holes bigger and use a washer to allow for expansion of the garolite when it is heated.
    Would you use a gluestick for adhesion on the glossy side of the bed for an ABS print?

    • @scienteer3562

      its a PEI composite not garrolite. Feels very much like an FR4 PCB. You can fix the shifting by bending the retaining clips down a little. I have a printed tool to do it. Its not a problem i have on my unit. I will upload it to thingiverse tomorrow.

    • @johanlindeberg7304
      @johanlindeberg7304 8 лет назад

      Yes, I thought about that too. A droplet of plastic that collides with the extruder and results in layer shifting.
      Or made the bed move. The force excerted on the print, by the extruder, is not negligible

    Angus, You reviewed a printer a while back that was similar to this. It had an enclosed print compartment that was heat controlled. You said that the printer was so good that you could tell it to start and just leave it and you had confidence it would work. You printed a Deathclaw on it using ABS filament with no supports. Do you recall which printer that was? Thank you for your time!

  • @elftablet7283
    @elftablet7283 8 лет назад

    That's one thing I noticed with the Cubicon, the nozzle/extruder is one piece, you have to buy a full replacement head if they break/clog etc, and they only come in one nozzle size, I'm not entirely sure what they are like to break down, but I'd certainly consider drilling out a spare, although I'm not to sure what adjustment to the settings I'd have to make for it to flow properly. Would it just be the extrusion multiplier? Not sure in cubicons software would allow a custom nozzle size, but I'd probably get it to work, if I can drill it, through maybe Cura, or if everything works out I may even consider Simplify3D.
    I've narrowed my expected buy date to July as I have work going on in the house atm.. so definitely July.
    How did your Robowar go?

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      The cubicon extruders used to be able to be serviced - not sure if you were meant to. I will confirm from the Aus supplier and get back to you on that. The cubicion use 'hvs' or something gcode extension but renaming it makes it open in Simplify3D fine - so I'm guessing going the other way around would probably work fine too. I might have the style on its way to test out but it's a lot smaller... kind of an oddball product being so expensive with that build volume. Robowars was awesome - here's the rumble where my bot eventually smoked up as the drive motors overheated ruclips.net/video/An05XlMujWg/видео.html

    • @elftablet7283
      @elftablet7283 8 лет назад

      Thank you, Angus, I appreciate that.
      I was worried, or rather, concerned about the 'hvs' extension too because I'd seen reference to that myself, but everywhere else, even their own specs, now say it supports 'obj' and 'stl' so it all seems good, and I'm having a hard time finding a HyVision reference to 'hvs' anymore. Nice news about getting a Style for a while (budding poet) and yes, small build vol and rather expensive for it, but it's not called the 'Style' for nothing it's a stunning looking printer.
      Commiserations about overheating, but you made it though to the final battle, that's not to be sneezed at, and you know what they say, "It isn't the winning or losing, it's the taking part", just learn from it for next year, I have a feeling though that you'd be more at home in a heavier class.

      Not bad actually, they have used ones even cheaper. Using 3 $300 ones (CEL Robox) I got new from Amazon as I type this making parts. These are earlier production units (mine were date coded 2014) and required firmware updates obviously. After that, all three worked great. Then I had 2 of those 3 that started to have gantry errors. Recapping the logic board solves the problem when that happens. BTW, I have 5 of these machines total and getting close to over 5K hours total. Print quality from the valved heads on these are amazing. I question long term integrity of certain choices of sensors they used etc, but they are going strong. No indications of wear. Recirculating ball guides. This is an out of the box ready to go printer with easy to use software. It can also print the really high temperature stuff like nylon.

      It has two large fans in the top that suck air through, to cool it quickly during PLA prints or to cool the chamber down after an ABS print.

    • @CutterSlade001
      @CutterSlade001 8 лет назад

      But not integrated into the hotend too blow directly on the print? Wouldn't that greatly increase the print quality, especially on the details like the tip of your test cone? At least on PLA prints.

    • @scienteer3562
      @scienteer3562 8 лет назад

      +Cutter Slade yes there is a fan inside the head. Its a combined unit for cooling the heat break so never turns totally off to prevent clogs. Normal wisdom is that there should be no cooling fan for ABS but as the air inside the chamber is at a controlled 60 degrees ambient the cooling doesnt cause problems for ABS. The ventalation fans on the lid turn on and off to control the ambient temperature BTW.

    As an owner, I hate this thing. It worked decent at the beginning of it's life. Now that it's old it's finicky, the warranty has run out, and the design is straight up HOSTILE to disassembly and repair. Regular software like Cura has far eclipsed CEL AutoMaker. If you are a power user (you like tweaking settings and repairing on your own) then stay far away.

  • @MakeItWithCalvin

    I think for its intended "target" audience it is interesting although the print head scares me a bit if something goes wrong. Are you stuffed and have to send the WHOLE machine back or can you exchange heads? Other concern is if someone loads say ProtoPasta Carbon Fiber or ColorFabb Bronze Fill will that cause heaps of issues in the nozzle? I know that isn't what people normally use in schools but you know someone will try in their off hours!.
    The G10 bed is seriously interesting... although you do have to be careful on the sanded side since in my experience G10 loves to soak oil in and without using nasty solvents it is a PAIN to remove the oil. The glossy side is fine since it is glossy and sealed :).

    • @RoboxCEL
      @RoboxCEL 8 лет назад +1

      The head can be removed without any tools, you eject any loaded filament and release a thumbscrew on the back of the head. Our intent is to make a range of heads which will make use of the 3 axis movements, there is also enough data and power connectivity to the head to add some powerful components within the head itself. I have a prototype of a stylus cutter working on my desk right now which is very fun and fast to use for cutting stickers and shapes from various materials.
      "Filled" filaments such as bronzefill will reduce the lifetime of components due to the abrasive surface and the residue left after printing.
      Pete from the Robox forum.

    • @MakeItWithCalvin
      @MakeItWithCalvin 8 лет назад

      Thanks for getting back! I feel a lot better now about the head and from experience with abrasive filaments they chew EVERYTHING up that it touches. Bowden tubes, feed wheels... you get the idea!
      The "add on heads" is a REALLY interesting idea honestly. Having your 3D printer say also cut paper or stickers is a really helpful idea!

    Can you 3d print a 3d printer?

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  6 лет назад +1

      Sure can! Check out the 'reprap' project, it kind of started the whole consumer 3D Printing space.

    Angus, how can you show that utter rubbish of a 0.8mm nozzle test print (I know from experience that I can get comparatively amazing prints out of a 0.8mm e3d nozzle on a Kossel PRO) and say it's "ok for an 0.8mm nozzle"?

    This is a great printer, when it works. However, there is an inherent problem with it.which is the seals on the print head nozzles. These can last anything between 2 hours and 1000, but mostly at the lower end. After 14 months, I am now on my 7th head.
    So far Robox have been very good about replacing the heads, but when that stops, they cost £140 to replace.
    Until this head problem is resolved, I cannot recommend this printer.

    Eeehhh... It's pretty, but it has some serious drawbacks for the consumer-prototyping market. Those prints did not look as good as my Wanhao, then again, I have put countless hours into fine-tuning and servicing my Wanhao. This machine as you say is in a different market. this is what I get off of Wanhao i3 v2 i.imgur.com/9ycQrMY.jpg

    Banggood in china has better support that Hobbyking. Most items Hobbyking sells Banggood will have cheaper and with free shipping. Banggood also does not have a team dedicated to deleting any and all negative reviews which Hobbyking does.

    Looks like a good printer for the education system (God help them if they buy through HobbyKing ;-) ) as it looks like it has some great features, but as a hobbyist Maker/Hacker I think my money would be better spent elsewhere.

    cel robox make very poor quality printers. i own 2 and since having them for 8 months .they have been returned close to 20 times for repair and replaced twice.
    they are not ready for the hobby world

      I also have one. I own it since 1 year now and i got like 5 errors like stuck filament or something. But then i didn't ship them for repair, i wrote with the support and they gave me instructions how to fix the error. So every problem took like 1 day to fix the issue. Now when i the material is stuck, i know what to do and can fix it in minutes. And i haven't had any crash of the software. That must have to do with your pc.

    • @comicbookhobby3607
      @comicbookhobby3607 7 лет назад

      nothing to do with my computers I use it on mac and hp laptop and crashes on both. the support is very poor did they tell you if you do the fix yourself you lose the warranty bet they didnt

    • @elianterelle2935
      @elianterelle2935 7 лет назад +1

      when you do what they said you should do, you don't lose waranty. I have one robox so i don't know if it crashes with two. In my experience the support is great(at least Lee Bowman)

      I have had mine for about 4 months and has been hands down the best 3D printer I have experienced so far. With a little tweaking (turning the bed temp down to 112 degrees and adding a .5mm chamfer to all edges that contact the bed, the parts come out absolutely astounding. The precision is so good, the construction layers are nearly invisible (fine resolution setting)... just a matte finish. Software has been trouble free for me. The only machine that can do higher resolution for very tiny parts is my formlabs stereo lithography.

      considering the number of reprap printers I have and the amount of time and money that went into them, this printer is exactly for me. I am getting real sick of always tinkering with these machines, right now I just want something that spits out decent looking prints with accuracy.
