    I just bought this machine based on this review. My first 3d printer. I didn't need a large build volume. I just wanted something cheap that was easy to assemble and calibrate that produces consistent "decent quality" prints. Assembly time: 30 minutes. Software install and calibration: 20 minutes. First print within an hour of opening the box. I've printed 20 objects so far. 20 successes, zero failures (except running out filament once). In short, I love it.

    If you liked that machine, you're gonna love my Eclips3D2. Same design philosophy as this one, simplicity and quality over features, just taken to a larger and more polished/enclosed design. Plus some necessities like LED lighting and a heated bed capable of ABS temps. I'll definitely be contacting you directly once it's ready!

    Nice video. The best of the best functionality would be to replace the classic steppers and belt with a linear motor/rail with an LVDT for position control. Thanks for the info. NO DRM, damn-it!

    my main concern - copied from their kickstarter ( they are being honest but raising attention to it as there seems to be some confusion )
    /quote
    We used HIWIN for our prototypes.
    The core motion system is supported by high quality linear rails. This ensures quiet and reliable printer operation and result in excellent print quality. We promise to use rails that have equal or better quality than our prototypes in the products we deliver.

    Hi Angus, thank you for all the pro content you keep on providing. I learned all the good stuff from your videos😃
    To solve your raft issue on this, I learned that a thin 10$ flex plate, a 15$ buildtak and 4 dogclips works perfect!
    And the prints flex off. I just thought that viewers who wouldn't buy it because of the bed - just might want it if they knew this.
    Last I must say I really miss the 404Villan ?!?👏🏼😃 could we get it done anytime soon?😇

    i worked for last 2 years in filament manufacturing for 3d print in italy... the issue you poited out in pla printing is true...if the thermal barrier isn't enough cooled,the pla filament will reach the glass transition temperature there and it will stick to the pipe wall or flex inside making a lot of resistance....some pla brand have a mixture of lubricant inside like mineral oil or wax...some other just have a high HDT so they resist more the temperature(like abs)
    about the printer: isn't it a up plus 2 boosted? same system, same extruder feeder, same cable,some hotels shape, heater and sensor,same pattern of print...I'm the only one noticing that?
    good job maker muse congrats for 30k

    I had the same problem too printing PLA. I had a lot of trouble with it. I followed baracules nerdgasms video on dust filter. A sponge with some olive oil, run the filament through it. No problems.

    maybe its still the time to check cetus again?

  • @wdonders
    @wdonders 8 лет назад

    @Angus : My guess would be that the PLA's which gives problems for this printer need a bit higher extrusion temperature to be able to push it through the hotend.
    The extruder is probably not up to the task if the filament is not at an optimum viscosity.
    All PLA's should print fine if you dial the temp in on this machine

    The belted Z dropping on power off seems a silly mis-step, could be easily solved by a worm gear. Direct drive on a cantilever arm seems silly, it's so small that Bowden could be used with little drawback. Still, print quality seems good. However the biggest drawback is the proprietary nozzle, that turns me off straight away, vendors stop selling the special ones after a while then you're screwed.

    I really like that they ditched the rods and rollers on aluminum extrusion and went with some REALLY nice linear guides that if treated right will last indefinitely... i think that is a game changer!
    as for the bed grab a chunk of aluminum or G10 and slap some buildtak or whatever you like and funky bed material issue done :)!
    that said an all metal hot end on a pla only machine makes no sense to me... i only say that because anything requiring a heated bed is out and you never get near PTFE's "danger zone" temps on PLA but that is my view. That said it could also be a heatbreak issue as i know the old E3D hot ends could not do PLA but now can due to improved heatbreak design making a real abrupt "hot to cold" transition zone

    This printer I thought very good because of the linear rails and optional heated bed. An enclosure could be made but single unheated print head it couldn’t really take full advantage of its precision movement for useful engineering and light production industrial parts made of nylon or similar so I guess I’m still searching...

    i bet you could easily add a support to the end of the axis that just dangles in the breeze, that has some sort of linear guide, and only use it if you are going print at towards the end of the rail, or on a tall print, as that z axis looks like it will start to rock after a while

    Is my Cetus (mk2) just a lemon then? I can't seem to get good results from it. Constant issues. I can calibrate the machine, start a print, and sometimes the head will still smash into the build plate and just grind the gear against the best for a while, then shoot off in another direction and scratch the shit out of my plate and nozzle. Can not print raftless at all, just does not stick. Supports are close to unremovable, raft is often literally unremovable. Levelling is a nightmare... All in all, just super not happy with this machine. There is a print sitting on my bed right now because I haven't bothered peeling it off because I tried once again to print raftless (Because I can't remove the raft from most pieces) and it printed a brim for which was fused to the part

      Exact same hot end as the Up Plus 2, and the Up Plus 2 is the exact same hot end as the UP mini. The Up Plus 2 has the exact same base as this printer. I think it's all the same company, or a child company producing this printer. Probably used a new company name so they're not taking customers away from their high end machines and just target marketing the ~$200 market.

    • @lukasdon0007
      @lukasdon0007 8 лет назад

      Typically on the Up printers this is because the extruder stepper motor gets really hot, which softens the filament.
      you can replace the motor with a nema 17, which runs much cooler, or you can mount an extra fan to cool the motor. Either option will cost you around $20 in materials. And either option requires you to print out some new parts for the extruder mount; the nema 17 doesn't fit the extruder mount because it is a bit longer, and the cooling option requires a custom fan mount for the motor.

    I have been having that same problem with my anet a8 , I can’t get my filliment to go threw unless it’s at like 150 degrees celcious , how can I fix it

    • @coletownsend9898
      @coletownsend9898 6 лет назад

      The common temperatures used for PLA is between 180-210. If you are printing at 150 then you need to turn your temperature up.

    So it's priced around the same as the printrbot play. A little smaller with the stock bed. It's bigger then the 200 dollar monoprice printer. I can buy both today and both print out of the box. Is it worth it to back this and wait?

      Yes! It also works great on the Cetus (as expected) I just tested out some. Very happy.

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  6 лет назад

      +Daniel Wolford the cetus is less solidly built but bigger build volume and awesome at PLA. you may find their software limiting if you like to tinker

      Maker's Muse Thanks for the help, I'm probably going for the Trinus.

    Well the review made me really ecxited about this printer.. But!
    - On the last minute the shipping cost became 50$ for the US and 70 for the rest of the world - why so late? you already had printers that you could check.
    - The 300mm upgrade cost 130$(!) which is a lot for an upgrade the campaign almost hasn't shown.
    -"We promise to use rails that have equal or better quality than our prototypes"... well thats kind of 'not promising'
    what's your opinion? How was you impressed by them with your relations?

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      Not defending them - but to go through the changes;
      - they're shipping factory to customer which is always more expensive than factory to distributer then customer or reseller, but it's much faster. Mine came in a fairly large box and in Australia for me to send that box across the states would still cost ~$50 so sounds about right.
      - I agree the 300mm upgrade seems too expensive, maybe rails that long cost more due to a lower qty.
      - Yes the change away from genuine hiwin rails is misleading, I may follow up on a video with that. They're currently saying they may use IKO rails from Japan.

      @talesh443 8 лет назад

      +Maker's Muse
      -Fast shipping is great, the only problem is that they changed the cost on the last moment which is wierd
      -It is probabley due to quantities, but do you believe the upgraded version will be stiff enough?

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      Personally if you print FAST I don't think it'll be stiff enough, you'll get wobble towards the top. But, the design would be very easy to modify with a single rod on the unsupported side which would make a world of difference I think. Did they change the shipping after you pledged? Not sure if that's against kickstarters guidelines but definitely not looked kindly upon...

    • @talesh443
      @talesh443 8 лет назад

      +Maker's Muse I have not pledged since I don't need another priner, 2 months earlier and it would be an option.. but I read in the project's comments that it happened to some of the early supporters.

    They say "any material" - what *would* happen if you actually plugged ABS in there? Maybe their bed is magical enough to hold ABS without a heated bed ;)
    And now for the orange elephant in the room... Are we gonna see that KUKA-arm in action soon? :3

    • @MakersMuse

      I suspect even if it was held down magically that it would delaminate further up! Still, I will test it out :D

    Hellow make's muse!!I really enjoy the cool videos you have been making about 3D printers, I find them to be really useful and educational!I am planning to start off into 3D printing with the money I save as a new form of the hobby as I find them to be really useful for my personal DIY projects and fast iterations of products and am planning on getting a 3D printer. I have had experience with 3D printing software but not the hardware. I am considering between the Cetus 3D printer or the TEVO Tarantula I3. I don't mind tinkering and adding mods however I really wish to know more about 3D printers and starting out right now I really don't want to mess up and regret, I'll get better ones in the future once I am more familiarised.As always thank you for your wonderful content and have a great day!!:) My budget is 400USD

    You can't do an unbiased review when a company gives you anything of value in exchange for it. The only way to do a truly unbiased review is to purchase the equipment yourself.
