    Dear Angus
    At 7:00 into the video, you mention your single complaint about the interface is not being able to tweak settings while printing. I believe CraftUnique has updated this. I received my printer yesterday (November 2018) and this feature is now available.
    Regards
    Waldo

    +Maker's Muse: Thank's for the review, Angus! I would have missed out on a great machine otherwise. The Craftbot plus was just what I was looking for - sturdy and reliable, without being too expensive.
    Craftunique has since released the Craftbot 2 which comes with additional WiFi connectivity, and they have also released the Craftbot XL - which is an enlarged version of the Craftbot 2, with nice linear rails and sleds instead of the usual rods and linear bearings for the three axis (I'd like to see that one in action :) ).

    Just so you know you can override the printing speed, temp and fan speed via the craftprint program. Which you didn't show here. You can even adjust prints that were started via the touchscreen this way.

    Super big thumbs up on the manufacturer support. I had an issue with a pinched cable after a week, and they sent me all new parts without any guff. And then while repairing that i guess i jostled the connector to the LED lights, and they send me all new parts for that as well. These guys are in for building a customer base.
    As far as the noise goes, I guess I don't have much to compare it too, but the printer sits right behind me at my desk while printing all day (venting routed out window), and it doesn't bother me at all. Although after I replaced the cables, I guess I tightented up the belts a little too much at first because I was getting that super loud noise you showed, and after easing off the tension just a little most of it went away.
    I have not had any real issues with the accuracy. Here is a time lapse of a spindle i'm making for a personal project. You can see it's flawless and threads perfectly into the device i designed it for (using a .4mm tolerance gap)

    Just a Update I bought the new Craftbot Plus and its Nearly silent! Loving it so far, i just need to get better at slicing and adding supports. The printer is absolutely plug and play, just take it out the box level bed, put in the filament which it comes with a 1k roll of white and a small assortment of orange, black, grey also. Thanks for the video it pushed me in the right direction and i picked up a really good printer for a beginner.

    An excellent review of what seems to be an excellent printer. The first time I heard about this printer was in the unboxing video you made and I have been waiting impatiently for your review ever since. It is nice to know that we have printers made in Europe that are this good and affordable. And it is even better to hear about their customer service. I am really close to getting the Craftbot+ as my first 3D printer. The only thing missing now is a discount code. Or even better, a coupon code to guide some of the profits towards Maker's Muse. But I guess this is the cost of an unbiased and independent review. Great job Angus. (:

    The thin wall issue with Craftware can be solved by setting the extrude width to 0.399mm, or by lowering the perimeter width percentage. I have my extrude width set to 0.600mm (which I'm finding works much better with ColorfabbXT) and then have perimeter width set to 64%. This is by the way with an E3D Hotend, which I mounted with an adaptor plate. I don't print in PLA on this machine and I've not found the stock PEEK hotend standing up too well to running high temperatures all the time. I also think the stock nozzle is too sharp compared to the E3D versions.
    One thing that annoys me slightly is the hotend temperature being off by -20C. I've errors of this on magnitude on other machines, but have simply calibrated the sensor, or created a custom lookup table. To compensate I have to include start G-Code that raises the safe temperature limit and programme in a higher temperature. I've also had some issues with the extruder stalling, but setting a higher current in the start G-Code has mostly sorted this.

    I have the Craftbot2, almost the same printer with a Wifi added. There is an option for a enclosure (dome + door) with exhaust filter which I have. It prints PC very well, ABS should be fine but I don't use it. I also found TPU printed fine, though there is a mod on thingiverse to add a guide to help which is useful with even softer filaments.
    I really like this printer, it just keeps on trucking.

    the astrosyn dampers definitely help the stepper motor noise, but there's some rattling going on somewhere. something is either loose or separated surfaces are touching each other during movement. i'm sure a bit of sleuthing could figure it out. then it would be a very quiet printer indeed.
    the cantilevered bed is disappointing but typical for this design. hopefully they replace with a center supported or 3 post Z axis in future designs.
    commercial H-bot printer is highly unusual and requires a stout frame to deal with the offset torquing forces. looks like the craftbot is up to the task.
    kickass UI, very good slicer. good price point for such a capable printer. overall well done craftbot! well deserving of its 3dhubs rating.

    One nail you hit on the head, customer support. On some printers that I will not (M3D) mention it is nonexistent and on others (Wanhao) it is their prime goal. Good to see this company takes their customers seriously. :)

      +CJ Printing It's all about passion man. Keep up with the videos and you'll get to the point of people sending you free 3D Printers like Angus, Joel, Chuck, etc. I haven't even begun doing my 3D Printing videos yet, but my passion alone in some printing forums caused a manufacture (sorry can't say the name yet) to reach out to me and give feedback on their printer.

      +CJ Printing I only pulled the trigger on it, because through amazon, it'll be 0% APR for 1 year. So, ends up being $100/month... Which, yea, is still money. But as long as you pay that, you aren't getting charged for the credit usage.

    I have the original craftbot that i got as a backer and i love it. It doesn't get as hot as the plus (bed and extruder), but its still a good printer. Also mine does not sound like that, mine sounds more like other printers out there. One thing i should mention is that the bed came kind of warped, it might be a result of the cantilever design or just a defect, either way its something to be noted.

    Did I understand you to say that if printing objects at or near the build volume limits on this printer that there would be some warping due to its open architecture? If so, can you give some idea of how much warping on say a sphere 200mm in diameter with inner support structure? Also is there any home of solving this by somehow attaching glass panels on the open sides and front glass door? Thanks

      I'm really into buying the Craftbot Plus, but not 100% sure. People say good things about the quality of the printing details on Zortrax, if I had a chance do see prints from both printers would be really nice. Actually there is a store nearby my home, where they sell both, but they don't have printing examples for the two models, only for the CraftBot Plus. Well, If Maker's Muse has a chance to grab a Zortrax, or at least a high quality printing from it, and compare with CraftBot and others printers would be really nice!

  • @MrHeHim
    @MrHeHim 5 лет назад

    The cantilever design is often a weak point and IMO a bad design choice, almost to go as far as calling it a flaw maybe in choice of design. With that said, i have a wood frame Replicator Dual from 2013 (got a deal i couldn't pass up) and that's one of the very first flaws i saw in the machine so i made sure to re-enforce the Z axcess rods with washers for the screws to hold on tighter without crashing the wood and Loctite super glue that's able to withstand impacts but also still stiff which fixed it almost completely printing at 65mm/s. Years later i designed new supports for the rods which made all the difference and now the layer lines are near perfect printing at even 90mm/s. Either way i run the printer at 45mm/s to minimize vibrations for ghosting/reverberations and it's not as loud either. Which reminds me of another design flaw i found in the Y motion timing rails in that they allow a bend/bounce in Y motion and also supported that with something i designed. I also suspect that the old 8-bit processor doesn't keep up as well and get a little bit of weird lines and the motors seems to run much harsher.
    But i noticed that the CraftBot Plus mounts the platform onto the rails with a small rail footprint on the rail allowing vibrations and movement to overcome the bearings or shafts (can't tell what they use) unlike the printer i have which has two linear bearings on each rail about 80mm apart from each other with Much thinning rails. There are still companies selling clones of the original Replicator and they seem to have good reviews and use thick long cylinders as bearing slides which seems very sturdy like in the PowerSpec Ultra 2.0.
    Now i realized I've sat on two things that greatly improve the design of the old Replicators and think I'll post them up on Thingiverse and other sites so other people can easily improve there machine without having to rebuild a whole new frame or buy one.

    Have you ever tried to print out a modular sound proof shell to place over a noisy 3d printer. Since you obviously don't monitor the printer while you're asleep the printer might as well do his job inside a sound proof box. If printing a sound proof box is too much fuss there is of course always the option of egg carton or or sound proof foam nobby thingies attached to the inside of any box.

    It would be very interesting to see if z-layer accuracy behaves differently on 60/80 compared to your 100 (as vibration should be lower?)

    Good review, though the sound was a little wonky at times. I think it was because the mic was pinned under the lapel of your shirt. Question about the build plate - how easy would it be to replace the upper aluminum plate with a glass bed?

  • @KYGONkarting

    i don't know if anyone has already told how to resolve noise problem. i succesfully solved it by changing original lmu linear bearings with drylin igus ones. they costs only 15 euros for 8 pieces on eBay and the printer become really quiet. ( original lmu linear bearings also damage the rods creating Little grooves on their surface, so i suggest to everyone to change them )

    Nice review. Being an industrial designer myself, I can definitely appreciate the build quality and philosophy. Making products like this is not easy. I do think the noises can/should be abated, but this is in the refinement category. The sheet metal, is that mild steel? (i.e. magnetic?)

    Not being able to change settings mid-print makes this thing a big fat NO as an entry-level printer.
    A huge part of learning (and getting successful print sometimes!) is babying the thing and changing settings mid-print both to see what happens and to potentially salvage a print going off the deep end.
    Fix that and this thing would be incredible.

    If the steps are 1/8 for the printhead movement.
    Change it to 1/16 maby.
    Should reduce the noice by a ton.
    If ur not running it at 200mm/s it should not make a difference on loosing steps and so on.

    Angus would you recommenced this machine? It seems really nice for the price and the build volume is great. Is it me or does that noise sound like it is grinding hard almost kind of like it is sticking. Se i have to get a new printer since my Delta died at the hands of my cats knocking it off my desk and it warping the aluminum frame and breaking the rods and ther various things. I have no motivation to build a new one so i was gonna get a pre-built and found this. It would seem to be a toss up between this and a PrintrBot Metal Plus. Any input would be great.

    You said that it doesn't allow adjustment during prints, but I just visited their site for the first time and I see this under "Feature Highlights"...
    Interactive printing
    Users may alter printing parameters during the printing process.
    So did you maybe miss something? Or is it maybe a timing issue where your machine has a firmware which doesn't implement this feature, but now it's available?
    I also just realized, maybe that is a feature only available while printing from CraftWare tethered rather than from the memory card...hrm.

    Now that you've been using the Craftbot for a few months, how do you like it? I'm considering a Craftbot 2 (which is essentially the same machine as the Plus, with a Wifi module added), and I'm wondering if you have any additional comments on the print quality. I currently have a well-tuned Duplicator i3 v1, and there really isn't much to fault with the prints from it. The i3 design is of course prone to a little ringing, would you say the Craftbot is a step up in print quality?

    Rostock MAX v2 DIY 3D any good?

    • @ProtonOne11
      @ProtonOne11 8 лет назад

      +Clark Kent If you are an absolute beginner, it kinda depends. Generally the Rostock Kits can be VERY good, but you can get some bad kits (from asian no name low price sellers) as well. However, as it is a Delta-Printer you are dealing with, it can have some extra points of problems you would not have with a standard cartesian printer. Bowden extruder and the delta mechanics need more calibration work compared to cartesian and direct drive extruders. And finding/fixing problems can be trickier too, since some artifacts that come from a bad delta calibration are hard to diagnose and fix, especially for unexperienced operators.
      If you are prepared to spend some hours just testing, tuning and tweaking everything before you start to get good prints, then you'll be fine. Just don't expect it to work like LEGO, where you just assemble everything and can immediately play with it in it's full glory... ;)

    • @MakersMuse

      +Cole Nagao Looks like Z scarring, possibly due to a bent leadscrew on the Z, or your printer is not extruding consistently so lines vary in thickness. Sadly it's a well known issue on Davinci's and there isn't much you can do to fix it unless you start heavily modifying it.

    Can you use Craft ware for any 3D printer

    • @serpentineocean
      @serpentineocean 8 лет назад

      +mike mun Yes, It has a slicer that will output to regular gcode files (custom headers and footers) and then it has a printer module that you can use to print from a USB cable. I'm fairly sure you can configure that to work with other printers as well.

      +mike mun I haven't actually used it on other printers. But if you jump on the forums at craftunique.com, they have some people who are doing that sort of thing.

      +JJ CC It's not AS bad as the makerbot Replicator 2X (stock it would flop around like crazy) but the added mass from the 2nd aluminium plate certainly does make it bounce more than I would like. I think the solution is to just tone down infill speeds.

    what is wrong with 3d printed parts on a 3d printer?????

  • @ReneJurack

    A belt without right angular beltpath makes me laugh. Angus, did you assemble it wrong or is it faulty designed? Min 2:38 shows it clearly...

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      +René Jurack I see what you mean, that is how it came. If the motor is tied to the correctly perpendicular belt though, would it actually add inaccuracies?

    • @ReneJurack
      @ReneJurack 8 лет назад

      +Maker's Muse Yes, two things are going to happen: First, depending on the position of the carriage, the tension of the belt is different for every position. This does affect the right angular of the X-axis and can force stalls and other things related to belt tension. Second, the printer can't print right angulars, instead it is printing parallelograms. Every cubish part printed should be off, this should be more visible at bigger printed parts. To sum it up: This is a major design-flaw, because it's one of the few important things to take care of when designing a printer. To verify this, just print a part like a pictureframe or such and then take measures diagonally.

      +René Jurack hmm sounds like I do need to conduct a right angle test, I'll let you know the results.

      +Maker's Muse Hi Angus, any update on this 'issue'. Did you execute any additional angle tests? Very curious if this is really a serious design-flaw. I also checked other video's and it seems 'by design', so not an unique thing on your machine. Thanks!

      I didn't look it up, bur what for a beltpath is used in the craftbot? H-Bot? CoreXY? Seperate driven axes?

    For ABS you may want to check that craftunique.com/forums/view-thread/1370
    For noise level reduction craftunique.com/forums/view-thread/1491 this topics
    Actually that noise directly comes from the bearings and rods and its easy to handle just need oil and good speed calibration.
    Mine sounds like doing infills 45 degree on your videos all time

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      +Levent Ozigdeci I really need to get hold of a pei sheet to test, was looking tonight but shipping is more than the sheets :( It's hard to follow that noise thread, were the bearings diagnosed for the high pitch noises? It's those ones which mystify me the most. Resonance is normal, the Up Box makes loud noises during 45deg infills too.

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  8 лет назад

      +shubham sagar Ask them why the ABS printing temperature is 260deg on the UP's when all other abs is 230deg or so.

      Maker's Muse sure,if possible,can you give me a list with all your questions related to UPs?

    • @skilledjack7054
      @skilledjack7054 8 лет назад

      +Maker Muse My belief is UP wants you to use their filament... So by creating a high temp abs means users are more likely to use UP brand filament than risk overheating generic brands... Also, I think that the higher temp in the UP helps increase layer adhesion especially on the outsides of larger prints where it cools quicker...

      +Hoffman Engineering Well, that depends on your budget, needs, etc. Maybe its the best budget one if you need that build area. But if you are just getting into it, I'd say the best budget one is the Fabrikator Mini v1.5. That thing has been nothing but awesome.
