Adrian Knelsen it was a great printer and I loved it, but it’s a little old and outdated now. If you’re just starting I’d recommend a creality printer, they’re more up to date and have strong community support behind them. I have an ender 5 that’s been modded to death and I love it!

I had the Monoprice select V2 for about a month before the power supply blew. Replaced that with the Plus and I think this review is spot on. Although I don't see any quality difference in my prints, the Plus seems to be much quieter and slightly faster than the v2. The touch screen and full sized SD card are much make the machine more user friendly.

Some people supposedly had heat issues with a part of the board controlling heatbed temps overheating and smoking on this printer, and so they say to use an external mosfet to fix the problem and as a precaution for others as well. Have you heard anything about this, especially with a lot of cocoon create touches being bought recently?

Hi Angus FYI the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus is only $349.99 (US) from Microcenter. It is in store only so it will not show up on microcenter, com unless you select a store location. Hope to get mine in a week or so and try my hand at 3d printing. You may want to mention this in an upcoming video for anybody in the U.S. that has a Microcenter store nearby. It is $50 cheaper then the Monoprice version. I have learned so much in the past few months. Great channel and keep up the good work.

just arrived today at my home... funny to see a new video on your channel just today about the i3 plus. :)
These days I looking for more news/issues on the plus version, and more than one has got problem on extruder after few days (the extruder nema doesn't move), someone attach the motor to X axes to see if broken... nema ok... so maybe something on hardware.
Angus... keep using it these days... to say to us more if need it! :)

I have 3 of these. The rattle when moving on one of mine was due to the base plate underneath vibrating on the base. A small piece of failed PLA or cardboard or whatever between this worked.
They are also known as a BALCO printer, another brand of Cocoon.
As with the spool holder, I created a larger one for all spools and have done this to all of mine and all work great with this mod!

I know this is several months in the future, but I have the monoprice maker select v2 and it's never had that issue with bearing noises. I have added lithium grease to the linear bearings to make sure they're well lubricated, but all I can hear is the motors and the fans when it's printing.

If anybody cares, I bought the Monoprice version of this machine, and while it's been an incredible machine, I have a few criticisms myself:
I bought the Monoprice Maker Select Plus, and fresh out of the box the extruder was massively out of calibration. I had major underextrusion problems. It was only extruding like 80mm of filament when it thought it was extruding 100mm. It took me way longer to diagnose this than it should have, but it's my first printer and I knew nothing so.. ignorance is bliss? I don't know.
The fans were quiet... for about the first couple of months. The left cooling fan unfortunately suffered catastrophic bearing failure on my machine very shortly after I got it. It rattled and screamed so loudly that turning the machine on was something I dreaded. It was still serviceable, so I just coped... until I accidentally hit it with an allen wrench and snapped a fin off of it.. whoops... I have since replaced it with a Noctua fan (I had to include a 24-12v step-down converter to make this work) and sometimes I forget that it's on.
The stepper motors for the X and Y axis are a little louder than this video led me to believe they would be. It's perfectly tolerable, though. I could sleep in the same room as it if I had to.
After I got the extruder calibrated and the faulty fan replaced (which honestly would be very trivial tasks to anybody who knew how these things worked), this machine has been incredibly reliable and I haven't had any further issues with underextrusion or excessive noise.

Angus, thanks for the great information you provide on your channel. I think this is going to be my first printer I'll probably get the monoprice version. I see a lot of people adding a Z axis brace to it as well as something on the fan. I see your machine in your videos, in the background and it doesn't look like you have any mods on it. You also said in one of your videos that you use it a lot to test things, I believe it was software. Do you think it's a good first printer and what mods if any do you suggest. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻

I'm sure someone already pointed this out but in the USA, Microcenter sells the wanhao i3 v2.1 rebranded as a Powerspec for $299.99 USD - I grabbed one to eval after seeing one of your prior videos on your cocoon i3 - biggest issue I have with it is feeling silly for releveling my bed after forcing a print off just like you said, silly (I'll upgrade the alum build platform and to a removable bed) otherwise there's no obvious difference to all the other i3 rebrands and I've had good results with pla, abs and even some carbon fiber - pla filament, it's become a daily work horse here too.

Top notch review and clarification of the differences. I am now down to a choice between two printers. It is either the Maker Select Plus 3D or the Anycubic I3 Mega. Both are $400 USD. Sure wish you had a review of the Anycubic. Both seem to have the sturdy frame and enhanced touch screen. The only difference I can see is extruder type. It did seem odd that you were concerned about putting a large mass into the spool holder on top. That frame does not need to move, so a mass shouldn't be an issue. Or am I missing something?

  • @Z3dPrints
    @Z3dPrints 8 лет назад

Many of the changes were implemented on the V2.1. (the thumb screws, new bearings). But the PLUS does have a larger fan than the 2.1 by (I think) 10mm. This does improve the print quality a bit by adding extra cooling. Do you know if the new fan duct I'd aimed properly at the nozzle? The V2.1 is aimed to the right of the nozzle. There are easy mods to redirect the air towards the nozzle, but I was wondering if Wanhao updated this.

Im on my way to buy a wanhao in this month.. you think the plus really is better? my thoughts: if you do a inclosing to get better abs-prints the 2.1 would be better with the sensitive electronics outside inclosing box.. if a cable get hurt or damage in the 2.1 you can buy it easy in every store, in the plus you need to buy a special cable.. plus version cost as you say 100dollar more and have upgrades who dont make anything better? bigger built plate, auto level, better extruder or that kind of things I would understand, but 100dollars and those upgrades, whats the point? you knows the different between v2 and v2.1? you also talk about the sd-card, its not possible to use usb-stick?

I bought one of these for my son at Christmas. He's had some ok prints off it but only around 35% of models printed have been desirable. He has asked if you could help with a screen shot or explanation of the settings you use when printing with PLA and ABS. The levelling too has proved very difficult and unreliable. You set up 2 or 3 of the 4 corners only to find that as you're going around the bed, the corners you've just set are now way out. Do you have any rips on this please and how crucial is this? Many thanks.

I'm looking to get one of these in the next few days. Is it ever likely to give me high quality, reliable prints? I'm not too afraid of tinkering and getting to grips with machine performance - but I don't want to invest my time and money in something that is never going to effectively achieve the end result. In that case, I'd just prepare for a bit more tinkering and get a cheap Chinese i3 rip off for over half the price. What are your thoughts?

been following you for a while now Angus. I bought the I3plus maybe a year ago based on your recommendation. I notice the Wanhao have again upped the ante with a version2 sporting so useful features and upgrades. Can you say if the original plus model can be upgraded to the V2 spec? I'm pretty comfortable with the electronics, mechanical and flashing, I just never really delved that deep into 3D printing to keep on the "cutting edge" cheers Rob

Why not design and print your own custom handle/handles for it!

Is there a difference in printing quality between the Wanhao i3 v2.1 and the Wanhao i3 Plus?

Picked up this machine from Aldi the other day and must say it great, actually for a $500 machine it is better in some respects to my $3600 machine that I got a year and a half ago.

My answer to SD/MicroSD and USB to my PC is to use a Raspberry Pi + OctoPrint
