    Before watching this video, I was completely lost. The day before, I had tried doing a “simple straight back”..It was awful. I was frustrated and I wanted to give up. But. Instead I got my shit together and the next day I decided to watch some videos and take 📝 notes. AFTER WATCHING THIS ONCE: I got it. I did my straight line back in perfectly. Then I preceded to do OffSet (Right and Left) GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TRY. SO. I wanted to say that I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED watching this video. It accomplished what my instructor could not. 🙏 THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK 👏🏼 YOU!

      I was doing the Same thing my instructor said if you see too much tread in the fourth axle go to it but this video says the opposite if u see too much trailer steer to it lol confuses me , so tomorrow I’ll try this method I watched another video and he said the same thing if you see more trailer in the rear steer to it 9 o’clock 2 seconds and go back 12 o’clock and vise versa

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад +24

      Using only one mirror!-why didn't we think of that?
      One mirror works fine until a slew of baby ducks inadvertently wanders into the path of your right side rear trailer tires. They deserve better...
      The only time you should use one mirror is when your trailer appears in only one mirror. This occurs when your trailer is well out of whack.
      Thanks for watching, Michael.

    I just started truck driving school this weekend and let me tel you, I didn’t expect the instructor to throw us in the truck the first day, on Saturday we learned how to pull forward and back, which wasn’t bad, I never drove a stick before so I stalled the first try on pulling forward lmao, after watching your video I know what to focus on, if you see too much of your header board blind spot then the truck is drifting in the opposite direction, meaning turn the steering whee to the direction of the drift to fix it. I didn’t know that till I had to do an offset back on Sunday, let me tell you lol all the students in the truck kept over steering and hitting things including me, but after a few directions from a advanced student even tho I pulled up 10 times I finally got it in left and right aide but after watching your videos it makes so much more sense. Now to practice this upcoming
    Weekend! Thanks for your videos!!

    I did the backing straight on a 28ft it’s a lot harder moves way more than a 53ft but what work for me was turning my steering wheel where you could see the tire and if you didn’t see the tire on one side then check the other side and turn the steering wheel on the side where you see the tire and it help keep it straight well for me it did .

      You have to watch both mirrors, William. You're looking for the SIDE of your trailer. Don't confuse the side with the front. The front of your trailer sucks eggs and deserves to be ignored for an eternity...scratch that, 2 eternities. (Please excuse that drama).
      You have to know what your trailer is doing before you can tell it what to do. Spot the side of your trailer in both mirrors as you are backing. When you see more of the side of your trailer in one mirror, steer a little toward that mirror. As the trailer moves behind the truck, steer back to center. Then watch both mirrors again. Repeat.

      New Driver Things to Remember: watch your trailer through every turn. After graduating, many students forget to watch their trailer during turns. Out straight, turn late when you have a trailer. Every turn you make is on behalf of the trailer, not the truck.
      Check your mirrors every 10 seconds. Always know what's going on around your vehicle. Sitting 6 feet off the ground gives you a unique perspective. You can see things ahead of you earlier than the folks driving 4 wheelers.
      If you work for a decent outfit, you should be given plenty of time to deliver each load. Try to arrive at your destination as early as you can. It's better to wait to be unloaded, than to be late to your appointment.
      Thank you so much for your awesome comment, and for watching our videos. YOU rule, Joseph.

    Better if you show how exactly you steering. You said you steering just a bit, about 5-6 inches, so I have a picture of it.
    My question is: Do you countersteer? Just a bit of steering and back to the center?

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  5 лет назад +1

      Think about it this way. Ivan: to successfully straight back, your steer tires, the truck, and the trailer must all be in a straight line. So, when your trailer drifts to the right (or left) your vehicle is no longer in a straight line. Steering to the right will force your trailer back behind the truck. Just before the trailer is directly behind the truck, steer back to center. Now the steer tires, truck, and trailer will be in a straight line again. Hope this helps, mister.

      @ivan76mrg 5 лет назад +1

      @@Cdlcollege Appreciate your answer! When I was watching my teacher, sometimes he does counter steer, I don't know why, maybe when it is too much of drift to the side. • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  5 лет назад +2

      Close! I am waiting for my trailer to drift to the left or right. When it does, I steer in the direction of the drift and watch my trailer as it moves behind the truck. Just before my trailer is behind the truck, I steer back to center. I then wait for my trailer to drift left or right and repeat the process.

    • @Onetazien
      @Onetazien 5 лет назад

      @@Cdlcollege Ok, sorry, not the very very end. That is straight line backing when the trailer is already between the cones. I meant the maneuver starting from 9:40, in order to get even spacing between the cones and trailer and then making the trailer parallel for straight line backing. I kinda got lost @ 9:50 after you said "don't hold it for too long" then went silent for a few seconds.

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 лет назад +8

      You're not adjusting the width of your hand. You are steering about as much as the width of your hand (4-5 inches). Small steering correction for small trailer drifts.
      As soon as you see the trailer lining up behind the truck, return the wheel to center (now the trailer, truck, and steer tires are all in a straight line.

      Hi, Elz. You'll appreciate the truck you drive at your first job if you're training on a beater.
      The key to straight backing is to watch both mirrors and correct a drifting trailer as early as possible. Steer toward the drift and then return the wheel to center as the trailer lines up behind the truck. The trailer will tell you how much to steer.
      Thanks for the question and for watching!

      Excellent question! When straight backing, the goal is to keep the trailer directly behind the truck. Think about what's happening: if the trailer drifts to the left, for example, you steer to the left to push it back behind the truck. When you steered to the left, what did the trailer do? It moved to the right then you cut off that move when it lined up behind the trailer. So let's talk about the parallel park maneuver. After pulling forward and stopping, you have to back up and push your trailer toward the parallel park box. To go so, you steer in the opposite direction. If you are pulling forward in the right lane to parallel into the left lane, you would stop and steer to the right to force your trailer to the left. You are doing the same thing when straight backing. The difference is that when straight backing, you're not supposed to allow the trailer to drift too far left or right. With the parallel, you have to FORCE the trailer to the left or right (depending on which parallel you are performing). Steer left, the trailer moves right, steer right, the trailer moves left. Hope this helps you, Steven. Thank you for watching and for your question.

    Do you ever break while backing? Sometimes I feel that the vehicle is moving too fast in R.

      I'm only in training, but pretty sure you use the clutch to stop or slow it down in reverse. Clutch in, to neutral and brake if you need.

      Your trailer will tell you when to steer back to center, William. You should return the wheel to center just before the trailer lines up with the truck. Thank you for watching!

    Thank You for this video. It really helps. I am in a CDL school in Texas. The school that I am in has really nice people for instructors. However, they don't really teach much. One of my instructor's can't see very well. The other one does not give good instructions and thinks because I am inexperienced that I am not going to make it as a truck driver. However, that is not my fault that he don't give good instructions.

    When you say steer a little to the right how much are you turning is it 12 to 2 or 3 or 5? And how long do you hold the steer before returning back to 12

    Yesterday, my instructor placed the cones and he asked me to back up in straight line. I failed repeatedly, again and again. It became a mightmare! I had never experienced anything like this! This was like nothing I had ever done in my life. I was thinking to leave the shool and apply to a trucking company for training. I thought I could never learn this in school. Today, I asked the instructor to remove the cones and I told him I wanted to back up alongside the curb only, looking through passenger side rear mirrors. So, for 3 hours I steered back alongside the curb and finally figured it out. What I figured out is exactly as shown in these nice technical videos. I focused on the "FLAT" mirror with which I could see the whole right side trailer wall. I paralleled the trailer wall with the curb (in this video the both sides of the trailer are paralleled with both side cones.) and I backed up. I saw myself in this video. The principles are exactly as shown in this video. 12 oclock. then 9 oclock then 3 oclok. Steer a little to the right and left. Make minor steering moves. Move slow. Use the clutch to control the speed. See it, feel it.

    How do you "go back to the center"? By countersteering the same amount you steered, whether to the right or to the left? I am still struggling with understanding the basic dynamics of the infernal duo tractor-trailer.

    • @TheVvlight
      @TheVvlight 6 лет назад +1

      It sure is...what is the best way to center the vehicle? My trainer says I need to straight up. While I do straighten up the truck is at a angle and I give up...

    • @Cdlcollege

      I'm assuming you mean center your vehicle in the lane when pulling forward. The best way to keep your vehicle centered is by watching your mirrors when you're pulling forward. You want to keep both lines of cones in your mirrors. If one line of cones begins to disappear from one of your mirrors, you're not pulling straight forward. In the video, I demonstrate how to do this. My head keeps moving from mirror to mirror. You can see the line of cones in my mirrors the entire time I'm pulling forward. I also show what you'll see in the mirrors following a crooked pull forward. Watch your mirrors pulling forward and backing up. Thanks, Sharen!
