After a couple days in class & in a semi truck, I developed a profound respect for truck drivers! We have to perform a straight back, offset back, & 90 degree alley dock in my state. A good straight back is an essential part of all three maneuvers. Even though I was learning how to do this through a CDL class, I felt this video was extremely helpful. Using small steering motions to slowly move the trailer over is crucial. I went from thinking I couldn't do this to I can do this! I passed all three of my CDL tests (pre-trip inspection, backing maneuvers, & road test) on my first try this past Saturday. Moving my 12 o'clock hand towards the drift & then back really helped me get through the backing maneuvers. I thought that I could have done better with my backing, but the third party CDL tester actually complimented me. He's said, "It's been quite some time since he had someone do so well." I wasn't expecting to hear that, but I was thrilled just the same! Regardless of the maneuver - once I got those rows of cones in both mirrors, I knew I had it! Thanks again for your help offered in this video clip.

      @mistymiller7028 2 года назад

That is great 👍 I am about to test soon I am so nervous about the yard test any pointers did you get thr 90 alley dock?

    • @RushinTruckin
      @RushinTruckin  2 года назад +3

The alley dock is very difficult to explain
      via text but I'll try.
Start with your tandems at the 43' mark
and your trailer bumper 10' out and 10'
away from the closest corner of the spot
you want to put it in. Before moving at all,
turn your wheels all the way to the right.
Roll back slowly holding the wheels there.
Watch the trailer tires. The second they go
from rolling backwards to sliding only,
STOP! Cut the wheels all the way to the left
      to straighten things out.
This is where it gets very difficult to
      explain... timing and corrections. Each
trucks turning radius is slightly different
which means they straighten out quicker
      or slower than the other.
At this point, your trailer tires should be in
      1/4
line with the opening of the spot. Now you
need to pay attention to your tail swing.
*this is where experience and practice
come into play to be able to anticipate
what's going to happen and how/when to
      correct it.*
Problem scenario 1 and how to fix it: if you
notice the nearest corner of the trailer is
turning too much and is going to cross over
the boundary line (ie hit the truck in the
spot next to you), STOP! Turn your wheels
all the way to the right then slowly move
forward about 6' then STOP. Turn your
wheels all the way to the left then slowly
back up again. What this does is reduce the
jack knife angle. If done correctly, you
should only have to do this once, twice
      max!
Problem scenario 2: you notice your trailer
      2/4
isn't turning enough and will cross over the
far boundary (ie hit the truck in spot on the
other side of the trailer), STOP! With the
wheels still turned all the way to the left,
pull forward 4'-6', STOP, turn your wheels
all the way to the right then back up 1' NO
FURTHER! Turn your wheels all the way to
left and slowly back up. What this does is
increase the jack knife angle to get the
      trailer to turn quicker.
Using the above information, you should be
able to compete the maneuver. VERIFY
with the person giving you the cdl test but
I believe you get 3 goals and 3 or more pull
ups (depending if you used any on your
      previous maneuvers)
You only have 70' from the opening of the
spot which may not sound like a lot but it's
      plenty.
I hope this is clear enough for you to
      understand

I still use this to this day....I always tell people to "turn towards the problem" meaning if your trailer is drifting to the right, then turn the wheel to the right to straighten it out.... drifting to the left, turn the wheel to the left and it'll straighten out.....whatever helps you remember it easier will work...to all the CDL students, youll get it! I promise.

Just rock the wheel slowly back and fourth, never turning the wheel past 3 and 9 o'clock, and don't forget if the trailer is going left turn right. Another thing that helped me is putting my right hand at 12 o'clock and leaving it so that way I always know where 100% straight is at.

wheels all the way to the left then slowly
back up again. What this does is reduce the
jack knife angle. If done correctly, you
should only have to do this once, twice
      max!
Problem scenario 2: you notice your trailer
      2/4
isn't turning enough and will cross over the
far boundary (ie hit the truck in spot on the
other side of the trailer), STOP! With the
wheels still turned all the way to the left,
pull forward 4'-6', STOP, turn your wheels
all the way to the right then back up 1' NO
FURTHER! Turn your wheels all the way to
left and slowly back up. What this does is
increase the jack knife angle to get the
      trailer to turn quicker.
Using the above information, you should be
able to compete the maneuver. VERIFY
with the person giving you the cdl test but
I believe you get 3 goals and 3 or more pull
ups (depending if you used any on your
      previous maneuvers)
You only have 70' from the opening of the
spot which may not sound like a lot but it's
      plenty.
I hope this is clear enough for you to
      understand
