"You could build a desk for somebody and you know that somebody is using that desk right now" Is one of the most beautiful sentences I've heard in years. This video has given me such a different perspective on how I want to view the world. I'm gonna start thinking about 'what problem do I want to solve?' Amazing value Devin.

This. I actually just shifted careers about 5 months ago and it's been tough to go from a rank and file corporate done to essentially an SBO. And my focus had largely been on "I need to make AT LEAST $x to make this worthwhile" and lost sight of why I originally made the decision to move careers. It's a small but fundamental shift in the approach because the problem takes the spotlight not your imaginary 1's and 0's.
Let's go solve some problems DezzNytes!

This is the best mindset stuff available for ppl at the ground level, and ive encountered "self help" and "entrepreneur" media since I was 18
There's no fluff or fake hype. Nothing puréed for mass consumption.
Just pure observation coming from genuine interest in people. Being given away at a steal of a price.
Took me a couple decades to regain control of my mental health, and refine my problem's thesis along the way.
I'm excited for what this next decade will bring. And for the virtual mentorship Devin's content is providing that'll help me get there. thanks

"The reward to solving a problem is proportional to the size of the problem" is something that I think we really need to hear more often, it makes so much sense and it's such a great message
"Real successful people are telling you mind your time, be aware that there are sacrifices in this level of success, this is something that they give their own life up for to do" - makes me think of the movies Whiplash and The Prestige, and we see it in all areas of life (and The Prestige is SO good)

The part on solving small, "low quality" problems to start with (around 26:00 or so) is really encouraging to people like me, who are still in that "Start" phase. What I got out of it is to find well-defined problems that you care about and that are solvable by you if you apply yourself to them. In a meta way, solving problems is itself a skill or problem to be solved, and once you learn how to do it, you can apply those principles to each new, bigger problem as it comes along.

    Hey Devin!
To answer your question at the end, how much impact you have, let me be an example of your contribution to the world.
1: (partially) you encouraged me to start streaming myself (low level StarCraft 2 content, yay). And when I started, I found your channel, which helped me to set my mind straighter (luckily I was not entirely delusional about it) that kept me from feeling a lot of frustration and failure.
2: Thanks to you (again, partially), I figured out my plans and the broad structure of my upcoming years (what I want to do/achieve in the next 2 years, then the next 5-8 years and further).
3: You singlehandedly convinced me that I have a realistic business idea/goal on starting my own personal developement and economic mindset education channel (technicals are still at work)
4: You make it clearer for everyone (yourself included) that we do provide tremendous value, it is just not measurable, and that might even be a good thing, as we do not numerise (is that a word? :D ) it, so we do not get depressed when we ddo not reach the same amount of people as we did last monday (just an example).
I am sure there are many more, aside from me, who feels the same way in some sense, as I do, when i say, you are breaking long imprinted worldviews of people to open them up for a better life in general.
Sorry for the long post. *insert potato picture*

If anyone reads this, a good way to find problems is to journal at night. Write down the points of friction that YOU had, and see if you can build a solution to those problems. Chances are, someone else needs that solution too.

Love watching your videos, maybe because it's like listening to myself or better to say: what I tell others everytime they want to hear the "easy way out". Like "Oh I want that too, how did you do it?" - "By eating glass for 8 years." And if they don't get that, I always tend to tell the a little bit longer story that they maybe should compare there life with mine except financial status or having a company. And that always leads to basically a trade-off: 8 years of the better part of your life (below 30) "thrown away" and deducted to build all that - and nothing else. And usually... driving you right into a burn-out, even if you say it doesn't (until you realize it).
Same with "But what should I do?", even if I don't point them usually to "Find a problem and solve it." because people can see loads of problems, but hardly figure out how to solve them properly, not even on a scale. I often ask about their "USP", what value they can think only they can offer or what's kinda unique compared to others. Because, coming back to your food example: If I think there's a lack of good mexican food in the area, I have to have the skills to fill that gap. And even if I do there are maybe people who think the same and be a copycat. And quality hardly succeeds (alone).
Btw. that was my main motivation too for going into marketing (for others): I was so fed up with all the bs out there, concerning agencies and also customers. Like no one has a clue or it was only a constant battle between those two who could fool the other side more.

Lately, I've been losing motivation about why I wanted to become a content creator influencer in the first place. And this helped clarify it. There are world problems I was passionate about solving and upon remembering what they were, it puts into perspective what I should focus on. Video came at a perfect timing. Thank you.

This is incredibly valuable to me, Devin. Thank you very much! You've given me a good view on what I should focus on and should inspect. Just like a lot of your other videos.
I'm at the point in life (like many of my age, mid-20s) where I have not a single clue on what to do next. But I've always (literally for over 10 years) wanted to solve the problem of there not being a second option in the western world. Meaning you either participate in society or you're dead. There is no "second society" where mental health is the highest focus and not income (at least not from my experience). Those that want to live outside the city just chilling and living off of nature sadly do not get the chance to. Real estate is expensive and not everyone is a master in agriculture or sustainability.
My solution: I'm starting an eco-friendly and sustainable tiny house park community where members can live life 100% away from money-focused problems; Housing and food is entirely free and provided by the community.
It may be a terrible idea, but I honestly want to make it work and am willing to sacrifice a lot. It's not that I have the best social life anyway.

I think most people give most of their life up and gain little for it, but they don't have a choice because they have to feed and house themselves. Its nice to think you just need to sacrifice to get there, but you need to start with a baseline amount of freedom that allows you to allocate your time as you see fit, and likely you need some amount of capital to get started. Basically without some amount of privilege, you can't really gain more. I know this is focused on those who already have the first part, but its important to keep in mind that even if you are struggling with what is covered here, you are already doing really well.

My very limited success actually did sort of come from solving a problem. I was interested in Dark Souls 2 speedruns, but most them were competitive runs so they all were almost identical including using the exact same weapon. I found it kind of boring after watching a few so I started doing them with all sorts of classes and builds (it's an action RPG). I wasn't very good at it and still suck compared to competitive speedrunners. I'm also not very good at doing commentary even after 5+ years. For some reason, some people like watching my videos. Another thing is that Dark Souls 2 is one of the least popular games in the series, but I think that also meant there were less people doing videos on it.

Haven't finished the video yet but I just gotta say i have to be living on a different planet if 200k isn't a shit ton of money a year. Hell i think 100k is a ton and a complete pipe dream for me at this point, but maybe it's more achievable than I think. Will reconvene at the end of the video.
(Edit) - this is why you don't comment without watching the full video. That was me missing the point of the whole thing. I've switched to more of the "here's a problem i want to fix it" mentality more in my life very recently(about 2 months ago) and i didn't even realize it. So for me this video opens my eyes to what exactly I am doing and why I've been generally more happy and more stable as of late. I was always so confused thinking back on why i would have these really low depressive phases, and the more i think about it the more it makes sense. I wasn't solving a problem. I had a "goal", but those goals were not tangible or real in any way. So it always felt like i was making no progress. And now i feel a bit better without even knowing it. Also i just wanna say that the "building a desk" analogy was probably the most impactful thing I've ever heard and makes me want to just move and solve small problems. I always thought i should shoot big, but maybe i should give shooting small a try for a little bit

My burnout is off the charts, but Im still functional. I'm taking a serious look at what kind of business I can pursue on my own now, while I work there for the time being. This is terrifying for someone thats coming from a family where a union skilled worker job or any 4 year degree job was the equivalent of "god teir" accomplishments. The only thing more terrifying is knowing that I would work there for the rest of my life if I don't actively remind myself that I want more to life than 9-5 autopilot.

I also follow Mr. Money Mustache who talks a lot about how the way we keep upping our lifestyles only makes us more stressed and unhappy. He thinks we should live simply, save most of our income and learn to do things ourselves. I think your talk is hard for people to understand because so many people don't have stable financial lives so a job is not a problem to solve but a way to keep up with mortgage and car loan payments.

    CABBAGE BRAIN TAKE:
The video sounds very relevant. I've been having so many issues my entire life thinking that I'm not good enough or that I'm not 'ready' to pursue any serious path. I've felt like I have to spend thousands of hours practicing(literally in the practice room for music, for example) and in the end of the day, nothing beats simply going out there and using what you already have. I can both attempt to build a career AND work on improving and I don't have to sacrifice one for the other. In fact, in today's world with streaming being so popular, you can literally practice live on stream and some people see that as the main attraction.

You are a wholesome person. There's a lot of toxic streamers in different gaming communities. If I livestream I would also be wholesome to my community and the game I play.

This is so great, very insightful, so valuable~ I've watched the whole video, you always make very inspirational content~
Thank you Devin, because of the way I think, elaborating on this really helps me allot~!
And oh my, really love the reason that you've started League of Legends, positivity~
I am wondering if you've meant by the education problem on adding to learn mental health and meditation to institutions, because that certainly is today's problem on a huge scale, and it's something I can see you thinking and worrying about because you care allot about others~
When it comes to problems, I always put myself down that it isn't good enough, but you've said that no problem is a a worthless problem so that helps me allot, since you are the one saying it and it holds great value as it's from a place of great insight, and great experience~
I don't know about my path forward further down the line but I also am not the type to think far ahead into the future~ Yes I can have goals but those are merely ideas or directions, setting foot towards it and being on the path can bring anything, I am open for everything and keeping my eyes open~ Whatever comes my way I'll see if it's right for me and choose whether to pursue it or not, also regarding problem solving~
I've also noticed before even starting how huge of a mental stress it can have and what it takes for it, that it demands sacrifice~
This is why I've put allot of time into working on myself, my mental and spiritual state, while increasing my knowledge at the same time whenever I could~
I sincerely believe that doing all that is not a waste of time and will be of great benefit for others, I've put a ton of time into these things so others don't need, I really want to help other people lead better lives, find direction and purpose and to find their center which will help em find peace and happiness, simplicity, love and gratitude within themselves~
That is my true goal in everything that I do, I grow and help others grow with my experience in any field or area that I can help with~
Thank you allot Devin for the great content that you keep making, you are very caring about others and it can be seen, at least by me, I really respect you and appreciate what you do allot~
What you do is very helpful, insightful and very inspiring~ I am sure that you help change many peoples lives towards better like you do with mine, I am sure that so many people are grateful for what you do~ 💙

This seems like a good example of where you've combined dharma with business. Like one of the first exercises Dr. K gives on the discord is to write down what you think is wrong with the world - the world sort of gives you the necessary perspective to fix a certain thing you care about.
The first question that comes to mind though is whether the answer to all problems is through providing value. Sort of like how the USPS or city funded bus systems make negative money, but provide that value. I guess there would be money made through being a lawyer or something, but isn't there a sever lack of money in activism? Or are lawyers basically activists willing to sacrifice other parts of their lives for financial success? I guess even people who run non-profits still take a salary. I think my feelings on the issue are there are some problems, like healthcare or Superfund sites, that really just need financial support and I just wish it weren't necessary to have to pay people to put up such a fight.

For myself personally the money beyond 75k thing not adding to happiness isnt true at all, but maybe thats because things have gotten so much more expensive, especially housing.
