  • For nearly thirty years, community healthcare workers have played a vital role in supporting the healthcare of most working-class South Africans. However, their conditions of employment are precarious, and they do not enjoy permanent employment nor most labour benefits.
Only one out of nine provinces has recognised community healthcare workers (CHW’s) as permanent public sector workers of the Department of Health, worthy of salaries and other employee benefits.
In this show we relook at the role of community healthcare workers in communities and the importance of the continued struggle to get them absorbed as permanent employees into the department of health.
