    I agree fully with the remark "there is something to be said about not having any visual ques". In this day we are all so used to meters guiding every step that many of us have learned to rely on it. Plus it is really fun and educational just to turn knobs and acquaint ones self with the subtleties.

    Thanks for the very honest review. You are the first person I have come across who does not oversell boutique plugins but puts it in perspective for beginners and amateurs.
    Another thumbs up on the tip on learning to use the stock plugins first. I think it applies even to instruments we play wherein we get so caught up with G.A.S. that we forget to work on our fundamentals.
    Look forward to more reviews on the Waves plugins if you are using any. They are on an 80% sale right now :)
    Cheers
    Sam

    You don't get to many detail reviews like the one you gave, I really appreciate you for that... I've been a musician for several years and now that I'm really serious about my music, I have become more aware of a good mix. Once again I truly appreciate your intake on this... I do believe the reason why pick like plugins outside of the stock version is because the ease of use... I for one have no idea how to properly operate the parametic eq that come in most daw, however I will be learning soon, but like I said early I believe people use the plugins because of the ease of use...

      RIALAS $99 with 50% off sale on all waves plugins. BTW, the age of the plugin does not factor in the price. Price is based on the demand/popularity of plugin. Not based on the age of the plugin. SSL 4000 G & E consoles are decades old. But still remain in high demand/use for those who still use a console

    Thanks for giving us a good roundup man. Although I am just an amateur composer, and have been this on and off (mostly off) for many years, I find it helpful to have different plugins that can bring some color into the mix, creatively speaking. I completely agreed with your notions though, and like you say I think people need to know that plugins wont automatically improve what they are doing. I remember messing around with compressors for a LONG time before I even started to get a grip on what they actually did, and to be honest I still have a lot more to learn. Anyways, as the bundle is down to 300 bucks right now I think I'll go get them. Cheers!

    SSL Bundle got on sale...but it's worth the dough no matter what. Just running it I get an instant ability to fix drum & other issues, even if it's my own VDRUM trax I thru down, it cleans up things overlooked slamming a groove down while it was fresh, allowing it to be used. The bundle with both strips, the EQ & comps seperate are so handy & add huge value & function. If u r messing around w/Cubase Pro or Logic whatev even with the improved native strips the difference is super huge imo. Puigchild660/670 are also great...Waves almost always gives out a bonus plug or 2 but this bundle now with the CL presets helps you get the handle on it as well as OH, snare, Vox & guitar etc pre's. Great bundle. Worth it if you have the essentials & want to "up your system". These algorithms are magic.

    A major difference of the G Channel is that the filters alone can be inserted in the side chain of the dynamics. The E Channel does not allow this very useful routing (for drums particularly).

    As simply as possible, they sound different in the way they do things. So if you were to put a 6dB boost at 3kHz with your stock EQ with a Q of 2 for example, and do the same with the SSL EQ and AB them you'll notice a difference in the way it sounds (most likely your stock EQ will be harsher or just appear to do less [leaving you with less headroom]). Whether one is better than the other is subjective, but 99% will agree that a well modelled plugin will sound way better than your stock plugins.

    Hi Graham - long time viewer, first time poster.
    Just wondered if your version of the Waves master buss compressor has the 10:1 and 2:1 performance the wrong way around? I have been using it recently and noticed that at 2:1 which should just tickle the mix, the GR meter was really being hammered and gave audible compression.
    Changing the dial to 10:1 made it perform as a 2:1 ratio should.
    Dags

    hey Graham, as far as my understanding goes, the major advantage of the SSL bundle is that it's actually modeled from the real thing. I am using the waves API collection for my compression and most of my EQing. it sounds good, the question is if the API is also modeled from rea hardware? I would love to hear your opinion on that.
    thanks!

    The
    SSL G-Equalizer functions much like the E-Series EQ in Waves’ SSL E-Channel, so it is
    very easy to move back and forth between these two equalizers. This four-band equalizer
    offers marginally greater gain change than the E-Series EQ, and each EQ offers a slightly
    different equalization curve, so you will need to experiment with each equalizer to discover
    which best suits your specific needs. NOT LIKE THE SSL G-CHANNEL ! ;-p

    V-EQ4 is a much brighter EQ i love it more on adlibs then the actual lead vox. but for lead vox i think the SSL EQ just suites the vocal much better and colors the sound better in my opinion.

    Thanks for the reply Matteo. It's a pity that Waves didn't take a little more care with their product quality control to identify this issue before releasing the SSL bundle and simply swap the positions of the number 10 and 2 on the dial. Now that I've realised the error, if I want gentler compression I set it on '10' and let it use the 2:1 ratio.

  • @MatteoMarsonMusic

    I noticed the same thing! I usually find myself confident with a 4:1 ratio and never used the 2:1 just because it sqashes too much the sound (even if i guess it's not intended to do so, but i never mixed on the real thing, so maybe it's how the actual circuits work!)

  • @kpgpwi64
    @kpgpwi64 11 лет назад

    that's not how ratios work for compressors, at 1:1, the signal stays the same and isn't compressed at all, at 2:1, if the input gain is 2db over the threshold value, it's compressed to an output value of 1. 4:1 is heavier because 4db over is getting squeezed back down to 1 and 10:1 is way heavier because it's 10db over getting squished back to 1. that's as simple as I can put it if that makes sense.

    • @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand
      @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand 6 лет назад

      Even simpler way of saying it imo is - 1:1 = for each 1 dB above the threshold give me 1 dB back, 2:1 for every 2 dB above the threshold give me 1 dB back and etc.

  • @RandomGuyyy
    @RandomGuyyy 11 лет назад

    Yes, kpgpwi64 is right. 1:1 - no compression, 2:1 - light compression, 4:1 - heavy compression, 10:1 - you're in limiting country.

    • @datamasked623
      @datamasked623 10 лет назад +1

      In my personal experience, if you NEED 8 bands of EQ to get a good sound out of something, you probably should just re-track it. Neve 1073s are only 3-band also. When I was in school for audio back in the late 90s early 00s I thought more bands were better because it gives you more control. Turns out, I was wrong. But at the end of the day, it's whatever you're comfortable with. Personally, I like not having to dick around with wondering which band to work on...3 or 4 bands is plenty for me--I like simplicity.

    Is the master bus plugin for the mastering stage , i remember you saying dont put anything on the master bus in mixing before you send it to mastering but if it is for the mix then is it just to add the analogue feel and a tiny bit of compression ?

  • @Whyrendog
    @Whyrendog 11 лет назад

    I love this set of plugins. I need to correct you on the compressor ratio though, 10:1 is more subtle than 4:1, you had said on this that there is heavier/more compression but it's more like a fraction (1/10th) if that helps make it clear how the ratio works in simple terms. So 4:1 would be like 25% compression, 1:1 50% (heavily compressed).

    SSL bundle is awesome.. But for 2buss you should try the Glue. It's cheap.. But I find it sounds better much wider then SSL Comp on 2buss or really any buss. I use to love the Waves Buss comp. But A/Bing with Glue and some others I found the Waves sounded narrow. But I still like it on mono sources for crushing things.. I can't mix with out using some of the channel strips though..

  • @datamasked623
    @datamasked623 9 лет назад

    I would say that if you consider yourself a pro, or even semi-pro, and do audio for any clients other than yourself, then plugins should be the absolute LEAST of your focus. If you want to be even in the same solar system as some of the dedicated production/post-production studios, then your money would likely be better spent on a high quality external clock and/or high quality A/D converters (and to a lesser extent D/A...A/D is by far the most important part). The really high quality stuff doesn't even "sound digital" because there is virtually zero jitter. That being said, is the Waves SSL bundle worth buying (if you think you need it)? Yep. It's pretty damn good.
    Just understand that if you don't know what you're doing, it's not going to make your tracks sound better. I read an interview with Andrew Scheps once and he actually said he uses the STOCK DigiRack EQIII plugin that comes with Pro Tools on most of his mixes. Yeah...that one!
