Penn Jillette is one half of the magic duo Penn and Teller, who have the longest running show in the history of Vegas. Bill tries his best to get magicians' secrets out of Penn, and they discuss the love of humans vs. animals, the magic trick "blood from a stone," libertarians and seat belts, Penn being in the “nut chair” on Politically Incorrect, Bill’s opening joke on the Jerry Lewis telethon that almost got him cancelled, the problem with the brains of young people, Penn on hopping trains as a young man, when Bill was a nanny, and much, much more.

The real magic is in making Bill shut up for long enough to end your sentence 😂
But the guy is not saying anything
@@bulleranse8323just like Biden
@@tems81 yeah…, and Trump
he gets a buzz on and the party is over
@@bulleranse8323because Bill keeps interrupting
Bill's problem here is he's being way too arrogant and dismissive of something he's not understanding.
That is Bill's problem EVERYWHERE!
And the sky is blue, the grass is green and today is friday.
Which for Bill, is being hypocritical.
He is over confident. Shares that flaw with trump, imagine that
You nailed it. Geez I love bill but listen and quit being an jerk
Penn's patience is legendary
Add to that Penn's volume is low.
Real magic 🪄
I am SHOCKED to see him on this show. Penn is a famous dry. He challenged Hitchens to leave his house rather than bring in booze.
@@northernbohemianrealist1412 He is, but he never judges people for drinkinig. Any stories you hear about him demanding ppl not drink around him are all dumb rumors.
@@MrTickleTrunk Yeah, I made it up.

Club "Maher Won't Let His Guest Speak" Podcast
AKA The Sage Steele Show
These Club Random clips are unwatchable. No matter how interesting the guest, Bill always finds a way to make everything about him while being insufferable.
That’s easy. Don’t watch ‘em.
He has a horrible personality.
@@bigmonmagoomba9634quiet you dirty old man
@@bigmonmagoomba9634 Well, little F word, the reason these shows exist in this format is to draw you in with guests that you like. So, I click on this thinking I’m gonna see Penn be interesting and brilliant, but instead I’m treated to Bill being a jerk and a loser.
@@bigmonmagoomba9634he has interesting guests, we just have to deal with mahers interruptions.
God this was painful to watch.
Billy boy, dont you know?
Never go full R-tard
You mean Science this was hard to watch
Maher thinks so highly of himself that he reveals how utterly stupid he has become.
“Penn Jillette ATTEMPTS to explain how magic works to Bill Maher” 😁
Bill is so difficult to explain anything to.
His ears are purely ornamental.
He doesn't listen, unless he's making a drink
How hard would it be for Penn to explain the trick better? Write it down and put it in your pocket and keep it close to your heart? AND THEN? Something something usher. I get it, but it was a very long answer that had no real substance.
Maher: "i dont understand it, so quite possibly it's magic"
Jilllette: "No, you dont understand it, so they fooled you, that doesn't mean it's magic"
Maher: "hm, i'd rather think it's magic than that i couldn't instantly figure out a trick that someone spent literal weeks, months or years developing"
....
Which is extraordinary for an atheist ….
Bill's next guest is a Professional Welder with 35 years experience. Listen to Bill tell him it's impossible to join two pieces of Steel together....
“If you can control the question, you don’t have to worry about the answer “
Bill: "I don't believe in magic or imaginary beings". Literally believes in magical mind-reading while a professional magician is trying to explain why it's bullshit. Close your mouth and open your ears occasionally.
My god, let the man talk - you don't know everything Bill! I struggle to watch these podcasts of late
I saw Penn and Teller in Las Vegas a few years ago and they killed it. Great show and I love how Penn played jazz bass with a piano player in the corner beforehand. Highly entertaining from top to bottom.
True ARTISTS!!!!!🎉
There are literally thousands of books on this subject. Just because Bill doesn’t know / understand the explanation doesn’t mean there isn’t an explanation.
Many years ago Penn told a story of a smart friend who visited him backstage to compliment him because he couldn't figure out how the tricks were done. Penn's thoughts on this were, "Of course you can't you M*****F*****! I've spent decades honing this craft. You know how to do advanced mathematics and I don't know how. I know how to do this and you don't know how. It's so disrespectful to think that because you're smart, what I do and have spent years training to do is something you can figure out by seeing it once."
Best response!
Club insufferable
I'm a magician, I do a little mentalism. I won't say how any of it's done, but I can tell you for sure none of those mentalists/magicians who perform as entertainment have any psychic powers. Some of their methods are easy, some difficult, some take lots of experience and skill to pull off well. I like Bill, but he is being annoying in this clip.
True. I won't call myself a magican, but I have been fascinated with (and have studied) magic for decades as a side hobby. The methods are out there (in print, in DVD, on social media) for anyone to learn, if they have the desire. The fact that Bill (and virtually all lay audiences) can't figure something out is a testament to just how clever and devious magicians and mentalists are.
His comment about "pre-show" work is the key here...there is also inner ear radio etc...
Wow Bill - fact-checking magic - you’re so smart Bill. Everyone is very impressed, Bill.
Those pants are... rad
Bill Maher thought John “The Biggest Douche in the Universe” Edward was for real!😂
I see someone close to you. Their name starts with an M or a J.... This is one of Edwards' most spoken statements. Ask around - try finding anyone who doesn't know someone whose first, last or middle name doesn't start with an M or a J. Get a yes to a statement like this and you can start fishing around with Barnum statements - and you've got a new religion.
In Britain, magicians commonly perform at weddings, and a simple trick is turning water into other liquids - like wine. Sound familiar?
Penn and Teller did a trick years ago on TV where they showed the audience how they did it. It was a card trick where they had someone take a card, and then Teller perfectly fanned the cards to a camera for a split second before the card was placed back in the deck, and the folks back in production were able to see which card was missing, speak it back to Penn over his earpiece, all within seconds.
There are of course easier, less brute force ways to find someone's card, but this trick revealed that many times, the way these tricks are performed are at least as amazing as if the magician was somehow clairvoyant. The amount of work, imagination, technical skill and seamless showmanship that goes into this kind of trick is mind boggling. And this was for a throwaway trick Penn and Teller did once for TV.
Bill just doesn't understand that he can't see the scaffolding of these tricks and that's because the people doing the tricks made it so he can't see the scaffolding. He's asking over and over "why can't I see the scaffolding?"
Because it's hidden, you twit
Every time I want to believe Bill Maher is really very smart I watch this and I sober up.
The ripped this segment out of the show with no context and it makes no sense whatsoever.
LOL King David famously said to teach your tongue to say ‘I don’t know’.
I hope Penn reads this. Big fan.
Columbo had a great episode that shows you exactly how psychics pull some of their stunts. It's called "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine."
I wrote a longer answer under the longer Penn video, but Columbo will be very enlightening on his own. 🙂
Penn Jillette is the absolute best.
6:14 It must have been so hard for Penn not to give anything away!
I like how Penn looks at his watch to see how long this dude of a show will end!
Bill Maher is getting old even faster than my dog
WHY????? How everything starts, one question.
I thought i was starting to like Bill. But i was in denial. What a putz.
I make my living in the magic world. I have to say that Penn was speaking the truth. Sadly Bill didn't seem to get what he was laying down. What are the three P's of magic? Practice, Practice, Perform. Magic like comedy is all about skill and practice.
Penn has grown into a very patient, precise explainer. I enjoyed this discussion a great deal. Bill wasn't listening particularly well. But what Penn needed to say right here was, "Everything you've ever seen that you perceived to be supernatural has not been. People have developed a lot of ways to create all kinds of effects. Let me take a moment and give you an example of how you might achieve the effect you are describing." They talked past each other for too long, given how intelligent these GOATs are.
8:27 Ups, I was wrong, Penn could not resist.
Ah, "Physics for Poets" aka "Bongmaking 101"
I do remember once seeing a "psychic magician" on tv showing how they did the name guessing thing. They asked a random person to think of someone dear to them, living or dead, and to write their name on a piece of paper, put it in their pocket, think about it, etc., and they would guess the name. The whole key to it was having the person write the name on a pad of paper, allowing the magician to see the imprint of what was written when the pad was handed back without the name page. A pencil lightly shaded over the pad can help show the name, too.
One thing I dont get is how David Blaine can have someone think of a person near and dear (usually dead) and then a car with that person's name on the plates will drive by. Has to be tv manipulating time frames, because how did they do it?
What about when someone picks a card, then in a flash it ends up on the other side of a closed window, and no one saw a thing.
With the card, they didn't pick it -- the magician picked it. It's called a 'Force,' and there are many ways to force a card.
Blaine has done TV tricks so yeah I don't get as amazed by him -- anyone can do anything with TV tricks
@@Matthew-ve7uv but, the card will have the name of the person they wrote down. Then, that card with their writing all of a sudden is on the other side of a window. Maybe someone can see what they're writing and is replicating it, then getting it to stick to a window. Somehow the person who wrote the name no longer has their paper with the name on it that was in their pocket, so where did it go? It's a multi-part trick.
Bill should watch Lord of Illusions. Lol
I'm sure there is an explanation for it. How would a magician force a name, though? Doesn't Blaine do things in public like stand still for hours on things up high? Wouldn't someone call it out if they'd seen him get down?
And most people are smart enough to figure out they told the usher the name of their dead relative.
Is this the Sage Steele Show?
I thought this was the Sage Steele Show.
They did that wheelchair trick in the movie "Leap of Faith" with Steve Martin.
I love Penn Jillette. I would love to have him on my show. #cultofthehummingbird
Seeing Penn be disrespected here makes me mad. That man shaped my way of thinking one summer before highschool. Bill needs to listen
Great conversation.
The problem is that science forgot how to say I don't know, and now it just says "shut up, listen, and don't question anything we say".
“The three most important words in science are, I don’t know “
Magic/slight of hand is an Art form that many can't grasp.
Man this is tough to watch. Been a big fan of Bill’s for years, but he’s become absolutely insufferable in his later years. The balls it takes to tell a professional magician about their craft is mind boggling.
Hey Bill, let the interesting person talk.
Bill is talking to a skeptic magician that’s trying to explain what he’s asking and he won’t listen. Pen has to be careful on his wording because there are 1000s of ways to create a similar effect. But he’s trying to answer. STFU for a minute Bill…😂
Bill believes in magic! There's a magician out there who feels really good right now. They're busting
You can't watch this video and leave having any respect for Bill Maher's intelligence
Bill should read Upton Sinclair's classic book, the Profits of Religion.
Can someone show bill the south park episode explain this exact thing?
My first thought as well! Penn helped Matt and Trey with that episode!
If only Bill would shut up long enough to allow Penn to answer.
"I do not know" sounds even better as contractions dumb the language down.
I 'am surprised Bill Maher is unpersuaded here - hasn't he seen 'The Mentalist' or 'Breaking the Magician's Code: Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed' ?
Put the fucking drink down Bill and let the expert speak to you. Jesus Christ this was frustrating lol
Bill is the kind of guy that would tell a brain surgeon that's not how you do it. 🙄
This is so hard to watch. Penn is such a gentleman but Maher, seated beside a world expert on illusions, won’t even let the expert explain himself.
Penn should make a tool disappear.
Bill on religion - that's bs... Bill on mental telepathy - now that seems real...Bll that is the beauty of a good trick.
I love Penn and Bill.. but the two of them together is horrible!!
Thanks Bill for showing us how your smart guy act, is just that. An act. 😏
Bill! Come on. They had plants in the queue as people were waiting to get in to see the show. These plants listened to random conversations or made 'small talk' with patrons and wrote down a few significant details along with a description of the person.
Maher is a low-information individual. So hypocritical.
I'm an "I Don't Know" Kind of Guy. lol
What Penn should be explaining is those pants...
Bill took physics for poets and thinks he knows anything about physics 🤣
"Third base!"
Bill will understand Streisand’s trick if he reads about evangelist Peter Popoff.
There are so many ways to trick an audience, but it's also possible to do guesswork when you're dealing with a large audience. I think Bill is simply a little more open minded than Penn, but I think that's a good thing. You never wanna be so close minded that you won't even entertain the possibility that there could people out there with these types of abilities.
Infuriating and entertaining lmao Penn did a great job
Has penn dropped even more weight
The ultimate trick is not making yourself look like an asshole Bill.
It looks like you still need to work on it.
Bill is trying very hard to be a contrarian
He needs to cut out the party favorites when having a conversation like this it makes him sound stupid
oh Bill. fully activated know it all boomer I can't deal with him anymore
Maybe if Bill would get a hobby he wouldn't have been so visibly desperate to scab during the WGA strike.
Well, most of this people get information from the audience before hand. So they will know a specific name.
I thought agnostics say I dont know...
In other words, know thy enemy. When you know the tactics and methods of deception, they become no longer effective.
Atheists don't say I don’t know. Agnostics do, but not Atheists
I like Penn and Bill but this was tedious.
I love bill. And I totally respect him and his show. But him not listening and his constant interruptions are so rude. I get it, it’s the bill show, but then don’t have guests and just call it ‘bills rants’ and have some bababooey or robin types (ala Howard Stern Show) to have him riff off.
The wheelchair trick I already understood it before they exposed it
so for starters why does bill not think well when the guy asks if they no each other they lie and say no. other trick is before the show or in line assistants talk to people in the audience or in line . they get the information out of them and then relay it to the "psychic" . that is usually how it's done. wrote this before the end and penn says exactly what i said. what about david copperfield when he makes an airplane disappear - no he doesn't they move the camera and the audience is in on it.
The real magic is Penn not walking out on Bill's dumb attitude and questions!
Can Bill not hypothetical?
Lay off the weed, Bill. You’re too high to allow your interesting guests to say interesting things.
I thought this show was pretty cool at first but now it seems it’s just another way for Bill to air his grievances. He’s an asshole.
Love Bill but damn, over the years I see it now. Just listen dude. Appeal to ignorance and incredulous statements are disrespectful and ignorant brother
Socrates came up with "I don't know" at the Oracle of Delphi, centuries, nay a millenia, before the scientific method was a thing. How do you think they came up with the scientific method, if not rationalism? lol...
I used to like Bill...
David Copperfield was lazy with this stuff... We had super close seats on broadway for his show when I was a kid. There was an empty seat for all of the first half. After intermission a girl comes and sits in this one empty seat. She happens to be the random audience member that gets called on. Immediately ruined the illusion for us as it was obvious she was a plant.
I love P&T but why is Penn talking in that creep voice here?
Seems like the simple fact that someone has mind reading powers and all they use them for is figuring out your high school buddy's name is enough of a red flag to draw some doubt.
Penn looks good, but man he's aged. Nice to see 2 guys who are older that look healthy for a change. So much obesity in this country today. L'Chaim!
He thinks his mind is open. Ears are closed apparently.
Maher doesn't understand how ignorant he is. He's not very bright.
Club Random sucks because when Bill drinks and smokes he never shuts up. Just let your guests talk!
Penn appears to have a painted fingernail on his left hand ... whats up with that?
I didn't know how much Bill annoyed me until now.
