I saw Penn and Teller in Las Vegas a few years ago and they killed it. Great show and I love how Penn played jazz bass with a piano player in the corner beforehand. Highly entertaining from top to bottom.
How hard would it be for Penn to explain the trick better? Write it down and put it in your pocket and keep it close to your heart? AND THEN? Something something usher. I get it, but it was a very long answer that had no real substance.
Bill: "I don't believe in magic or imaginary beings". Literally believes in magical mind-reading while a professional magician is trying to explain why it's bullshit. Close your mouth and open your ears occasionally.
Penn and Teller did a trick years ago on TV where they showed the audience how they did it. It was a card trick where they had someone take a card, and then Teller perfectly fanned the cards to a camera for a split second before the card was placed back in the deck, and the folks back in production were able to see which card was missing, speak it back to Penn over his earpiece, all within seconds. There are of course easier, less brute force ways to find someone's card, but this trick revealed that many times, the way these tricks are performed are at least as amazing as if the magician was somehow clairvoyant. The amount of work, imagination, technical skill and seamless showmanship that goes into this kind of trick is mind boggling. And this was for a throwaway trick Penn and Teller did once for TV. Bill just doesn't understand that he can't see the scaffolding of these tricks and that's because the people doing the tricks made it so he can't see the scaffolding. He's asking over and over "why can't I see the scaffolding?" Because it's hidden, you twit
Many years ago Penn told a story of a smart friend who visited him backstage to compliment him because he couldn't figure out how the tricks were done. Penn's thoughts on this were, "Of course you can't you M*****F*****! I've spent decades honing this craft. You know how to do advanced mathematics and I don't know how. I know how to do this and you don't know how. It's so disrespectful to think that because you're smart, what I do and have spent years training to do is something you can figure out by seeing it once."
I'm a magician, I do a little mentalism. I won't say how any of it's done, but I can tell you for sure none of those mentalists/magicians who perform as entertainment have any psychic powers. Some of their methods are easy, some difficult, some take lots of experience and skill to pull off well. I like Bill, but he is being annoying in this clip.
True. I won't call myself a magican, but I have been fascinated with (and have studied) magic for decades as a side hobby. The methods are out there (in print, in DVD, on social media) for anyone to learn, if they have the desire. The fact that Bill (and virtually all lay audiences) can't figure something out is a testament to just how clever and devious magicians and mentalists are.
There are literally thousands of books on this subject. Just because Bill doesn’t know / understand the explanation doesn’t mean there isn’t an explanation.
I see someone close to you. Their name starts with an M or a J.... This is one of Edwards' most spoken statements. Ask around - try finding anyone who doesn't know someone whose first, last or middle name doesn't start with an M or a J. Get a yes to a statement like this and you can start fishing around with Barnum statements - and you've got a new religion. In Britain, magicians commonly perform at weddings, and a simple trick is turning water into other liquids - like wine. Sound familiar?
Columbo had a great episode that shows you exactly how psychics pull some of their stunts. It's called "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine." I wrote a longer answer under the longer Penn video, but Columbo will be very enlightening on his own. 🙂
I make my living in the magic world. I have to say that Penn was speaking the truth. Sadly Bill didn't seem to get what he was laying down. What are the three P's of magic? Practice, Practice, Perform. Magic like comedy is all about skill and practice.
Penn has grown into a very patient, precise explainer. I enjoyed this discussion a great deal. Bill wasn't listening particularly well. But what Penn needed to say right here was, "Everything you've ever seen that you perceived to be supernatural has not been. People have developed a lot of ways to create all kinds of effects. Let me take a moment and give you an example of how you might achieve the effect you are describing." They talked past each other for too long, given how intelligent these GOATs are.
I do remember once seeing a "psychic magician" on tv showing how they did the name guessing thing. They asked a random person to think of someone dear to them, living or dead, and to write their name on a piece of paper, put it in their pocket, think about it, etc., and they would guess the name. The whole key to it was having the person write the name on a pad of paper, allowing the magician to see the imprint of what was written when the pad was handed back without the name page. A pencil lightly shaded over the pad can help show the name, too. One thing I dont get is how David Blaine can have someone think of a person near and dear (usually dead) and then a car with that person's name on the plates will drive by. Has to be tv manipulating time frames, because how did they do it? What about when someone picks a card, then in a flash it ends up on the other side of a closed window, and no one saw a thing.
With the card, they didn't pick it -- the magician picked it. It's called a 'Force,' and there are many ways to force a card. Blaine has done TV tricks so yeah I don't get as amazed by him -- anyone can do anything with TV tricks
@@Matthew-ve7uv but, the card will have the name of the person they wrote down. Then, that card with their writing all of a sudden is on the other side of a window. Maybe someone can see what they're writing and is replicating it, then getting it to stick to a window. Somehow the person who wrote the name no longer has their paper with the name on it that was in their pocket, so where did it go? It's a multi-part trick. Bill should watch Lord of Illusions. Lol I'm sure there is an explanation for it. How would a magician force a name, though? Doesn't Blaine do things in public like stand still for hours on things up high? Wouldn't someone call it out if they'd seen him get down? And most people are smart enough to figure out they told the usher the name of their dead relative.
