    I'm 52 yrs old and I've been a Star Trek fan since the beginning. My favorite ship was the NCC-1701A. I was a devout fan of all the series and movies but the 1701A always remained my favorite because it was believable. It looked like a ship that was actually built. The D and the E were great but never hit home with me like the A did. THIS particular ship gives me the warm and fuzzies like the A did and maybe even more so. The "nautical" design as well as the detail makes this ship not only believable but downright majestic. I hope and pray that this story becomes a reality. If it doesn't I want you to know that you captured an old Star Trek fan's interest. Make it so brother. This is a good one.

    The more I see of this ship, the more I like it. The whole approach of hyper-realistic starship design has created something unique and compelling. From what I've just read to familiarise myself with Pacific 201, it looks like this is also true of all aspects of the production.
    The first thing I saw when I thought of when I saw the design (after "okay, this is different") was frigate or maybe corvette. Where the Constitution was designed to be the flagship class of Starfleet and represent the Federation across the Galaxy, this ship to me looks like it's designed to solve problems... fast. From a military perspective that could mean policing action, anti-piracy, escort duties, search and rescue, etc.

    Never occurred to me that the registry numbers had some logical reasoning to them. I just looked up the Daedalus Class online and he's right about it being the 100 series. That should end that discussion on whether it was made before or after the NX Class.

    • @RotalHenricsson
      @RotalHenricsson 8 лет назад +1

      +Robert Hayes Registry numbers are all over the place; the theory that makes the most sense is that they're chronologically, either given their numbers when they're ordered or when they leave dry dock. Take, for example, the many, many different Oberths over the years that range from three to five digit numbers. The Captain thinks there's a hidden code behind them, which is a popular theory, but personally i don't buy it; they're too random, they're going up far too consistently and known ship ages correspond to higher or lower registries concerning their first appearance. Naturally there's a few errors in the mix, like (i think) the Defiant in TOS, but erring is human, both in and out of universe; maybe someone requested a particular number (kind of like many registries are in-jokes or homages), maybe some ships' scedule got moved around, maybe someone simply fucked up when ordering it and nobody cared enough to correct it. I don't see any hint or evidence for an in-universe hidden meaning behind registries.

    Such an interesting ship and such an interesting point of view on the star trek universe. I must say, I quite like it.
    I feel like in this discussion, you can really tell that Eric Henry knows his ship inside and out and has done not only research, but also put a lot of own thought into this design. It's not only squeezed inbetween the star trek on screen canon, but pushes that further, putting in new ideas and details, that are not nescessarly on screen canon, but just make sense.
    Of course, as always, the team of trekyards did a wonderful job interviewing him and I am eager to see part 2 !:)

  • @WakeRoberts

    It looks like a dedicated science or medical ship to me, definitely a non-combat vessel. A nice design to say the least. There are a few things I would change, most notably the nacelles. If the nacelles were mounted on the ventral side, it would look better.
    Having the main sensor suite and comm array between the warp nacelles when they're so close together seems to me like there would be interference from the nacelles that would hamper both. Now eventually subspace filtering technology would exist that could compensate for this, but it is unclear whether this ship is equipped with such a system.
    I appreciate the care and consideration that Eric has put into this design. It is clear that nothing here has been thrown together haphazardly.

  • @oliversteward2011

    I am also looking forward to Part 2. I really do hope Pacific 201 gets off the ground and becomes a feature length fan film. I am very impressed by the visuals and the concept art behind the project so far. One thing in particular that I do find interesting, is the 'module concept' of the ship. I think this goes back to the 'runabout' concept you see in ST:DS9. This could be interesting as to whether the Pacific could be fitted with different modules depending on missions etc? One great thing I do like, is the 'shuttle concept'. Well done there.

    Marvelous design; Daedalus and Velocity as well. I feel bad that I only just discovered the Pacific. Looking over the available art (and it's sad there don't seem to be 4k collections anywhere), Eric Henry is the only Star Trek designer whose principles are in line with the spirit of Matt Jefferies'. Modularity and realism united with futuristic technology, not out of balance. Very practical and naval. On the TNG end of the spectrum, a lot of Mark Rademaker's designs similarly exemplify these principles, yet brought notably further into the future, and, in my opinion at least, better than what was generally depicted in TNG+. In my own head, I now picture TOS as closer to Eric's vision, and TNG closer to Mark's. I think it's a very nice aesthetic continuity for a new technical manual, tabletop game, or something.

      Perhaps.. it's based off of a theory. A rather convincing theory, but I still wouldn't say that this is what a realistic Enterprise will look like.. and we won't know for quite a while. Nacelles may work somehow for all we know.. though the ring does make more sense currently.

    If people just took Eric's perspective on visual Star Trek canon there would be far less protestation to the Discovery visual changes. I never articulated my personal perspective on visual canon to the degree that Erik has, but since I have no problems with the visual changes made in Discovery (for the most part) I definitely find myself on the same page. For example, I was actually a little disappointed that there weren't some added details made to the Enterprise in Trials and Tribble-ations. It was great seeing the Enterprise as it was, and I certainly didn't complain, but if the showrunners had decided to change some things it really wouldn't have bothered me.

  • @jmc32007
    @jmc32007 11 месяцев назад

    What nobody seems to get about the Enterprise design is that a Matt Jefferies designed it as a modular design in which the saucer section would separate and go down to a planet, using all the read available resources of the saucer section or if all the resources of the saucer section were not needed, including the personnel. A handful of crewmembers could simply beam down there by conserving resources.
    I don’t think this reality of the enterprise design was ever realized because of budget constraints on the TV show.
    But again look at the design the engines are modular too . easy to swap out.
    What’s in the secondary hull? A high speed navigational deflector for using at high warp speeds.
    Anyway, those are some of my thoughts.

    It could totally have antimatter triggered nuclear fusion warheads. They would use a microgram of antimatter, be far lighter and more efficient than modern fission-fusion-fission devices. It keeps them futuristic but also frugal.

    Very awesome! I like the comment about not texturing the entire defector being complete made from a copper material. Perhaps you could consider it as a physical medium (panels or paint) that was placed to protect the primary, and most important part of the dish, from minimal impacts while the defector was not under power? You don't want that dish to become dented from a even small impact.

    • @shawn2780
      @shawn2780 8 лет назад

      +Jack von Kuehn It's definitely not stock, there are some subtle changes such as the Pacific Style bussards as well as the extra red lights, and it looks like a hull re-texture though its hard to tell in the shot. Perhaps it's an NX that hasn't been refitted yet... or maybe he just didn't want to get in touch with Drexler regarding using his refit. Would have been rad if he did though (yes, he's got me saying it too)

    I was thinking about the warp speed limits and wondering if they had a reason for the limits. i.e is it a question of how much power the engines can safely output, a question of structural stresses on the ships hull, a question of the deflectors ability to deal with dust and particulate matter at a specific warp speed, or a question of being able to balance the warp field geometry at specific speeds. if it is a question of safe energy output of the engines then one in theory could design a better engine and swap them out of this ship to bump the speed up to max 7 or max 8 ect ect. one could even apply alien tech to the ship to bump up power output and thus push the ship to higher warp speeds without any major modification to the nacelles.

  • @thribs

    Reed does mention the "Warp 7 beauties" in that final Enterprise episode that were supposed to replace the NX Class.

    • @ECHenry
      @ECHenry 8 лет назад

      +Robert Hayes I have a lot of problems with the finale episode. That would mean that warp technology didn't progress hardly at all in 100 years, as the max speed of Kirk's ship was (normally) Warp 8. Not to mention that nobody mentions the Romulan War and how absurd it is that they're putting a perfectly functional ship in mothballs after just 10 years.

    I really like the look of this ship. My only problem is the tail-like thing between the nacelles. To be 100% true to Trek lore this ship could not generate a warp field: the space between the nacelles has to be empty. Other than that I love this ship.

    This ship design is the first I have to say "nay" on. It looks to busy and "compact". At the very least, I would redo the top portion (starting with getting rid of the dish, and just have the main dish being below the saucer), and streamline the rest of the ship.

    Nuclear warheads by any standard we have now would be useless against any ship with shields. Traveling at full impulse which is roughly 1/4 light speed any particles or "space dust" would have the same effect on the vessel as a nuclear warhead detonation. Minimal navigational shields would be all that was needed to negate the effect of a nuclear weapon.

    I think the one thing that really bugs me about the guy who created that ship was how he danced around the canon history that was set in stone by Roddenberry just so he could do what he wanted to do.
    because if we was going by Roddenberry canon then no ship that predates the enterprise would have anything other than lasers for their energy weapons until after the first refit of the Enterprise which happened before Kirk took over as caption for the Enterprise.
    so going by Roddenberry canon that ship is illegal canon wise.

    I'm not a fan of the Pacific 201. As an artist and a Mechanical Designer if you wanted a more utilitarian design then you should have used cues from Mark Rademaker's IXS Enterprise for NASA's Warp Ship. The sail serves no logical purpose on a Trek ship That's a 20th century look. It needs a functional redesign but this close.
    I do like that you got rid of the Red Glow. It does look cartoony and it's SO MASSIVELY cliche when it comes to fan designs. We don't need glows.

      +saquist I would agree with you on that one. I myself, am not a mechanical engineer. However I think ship design is bit like architectural design and everyone brings in their own artistry there. It does not necessarily have to be fully utilitarian. But, I do get your argument. NASA's Warp ship is interesting in itself and would like to see a feature length episode by Trekyards on this.
