  • Riding a recumbent bike after a total knee replacement. What is the best kind of bike to ride after a total knee replacement? Recumbent bike vs Upright
In this video I discuss the benefits of riding a recumbent bike after a total knee replacement and I share some tips and tricks you can use to improve your ability to gain range of motion. At 00:27 I discuss details about the bike. At 01:00 I explain how you should be positioned on the bike. I discuss where the seat should be and what your ankle, knee, and hip motion should look like. At 01:55 I explain a couple tips you can use if you don't have enough knee flexion to make a full revolution.
At 02:44 I discuss rocking if you are unable to complete a full revolution.
Different Bike Styles: This bike is more upright and affords you a more comfortable hip and knee joint angle: amzn.to/2E7W6A3
This is more of a traditional recumbent cycle: amzn.to/2LPtr9o

I only started watching your channel last October, after my first knee replacement. I’m three days away from my second knee replacement. That’s two replacements in two months. Of all the channels on the subject, yours feels more personal. I had great success on my first TKR, and hope the second is at least as good. I’m a little worried that my first isn’t quite ready to carry the weight, but I want this behind me before spring.

I love the recumbent bike. I used it at my gym as a warm up before surgery. Once I had the right knee replacement on 5/10/21 my OS had a RomTec bike sent to my home. I think it made all the difference in the world in my recovery. I am having my left knee replaced at 12 weeks from the right (8/9/21) and I'm delighted that I am getting the use of that machine again! I have an old ("vintage" LOL) Voit Stationary Bike that I rigged with 11/4" PVC pipe in the correct length to make up for the fact that the seat will no longer hold in the correct position. The RomTec bike is an easier machine to get in and out of than most home gym bikes because it is a separate unit that you put a kitchen chair behind making it easier to step away from a few days after surgery.

Ii had a RTKR on 9/2, and I'm so struggling to get to 90% flexionn, just to start. Your videos are ever so helpful! Thank you. I get so little time once a week with PT, 30-60 mins, that I pretty much have to work on everything at home, which is fine, and I do this twice daily. Love the wedge, as I have one. Love all of your instruction and support! Can't thank you enough for your videos!!!

Thank you Tony , I can’t begin to tell you how much watching your videos has helped me. I’m 13 weeks and my flexion is about 95 Mabel mere and not sure about my extension. . PT wants me to start using a JAS brace which I started a few days ago . I have a lot of pain on my calf and ankle when I do the extension it’s very frustrating when I don’t have a PT that I can get ahold of and at Doctor that doesn’t help very much. I never got physical therapy for two weeks after my total knee replacement and I think that’s what really set me back . PT at hospital were not very helpful walk me twice and forgot about me. I wish I could have had a PT like you here in Santa Fe NM. I don’t know what to I’m scared.

Total Therapy Solution - Physical Therapy The left one for some reason will just not loosen up, the right seems to be getting tighter which is of great concern too. I can see the swelling, mostly on the front of the knees, did a round of steroids about six weeks ago with not much success. I wake up in agony everyday and have to get moving them right away to get some relief. Debating if I need to wrap them at night, or how I can best deal with this. It’s frustrating after this length of time for sure. Just started slowly on elliptical to see if it will help. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Total Therapy Solution - Physical Therapy both! The left knee has incredible behind behind it when I bend. I am guessing it’s around 90, maybe. I noticed the hamstrings seem tight, I have been stretching it daily, but maybe I am doing harm at night sleeping with them bent? The right one is getting tighter on the front.

I have a torn meniscus. I tried the upright bike and had no pain after . Next time I tried the recumbent bike and I couldn't even walk for two days. I think it had more to do with the range of motion. I was to aggressive to soon. Going back to setting further back . Hope that works.

Saw this video on Dick's Sporting - you used a great recumbent bike. With both knees replaced, I'm looking for a good one that is easy-on and easy-off but with these abilities. Can you recommend one that is a step through to get on/off, has a good high weight limit, strong and reliable. I now have a Schwinn Aidyn but almost impossible to get on and off without killing myself. Would greatly appreciate some recommendations. Thanks for the excellent video. :)

I did purchase a little under the desk peddler. I can't bring it too close to me but I am able to peddle it. I'm hoping slight bend and movement is better than nothing plus keeping the fluids moving. Any thoughts? Thank you!

@@toryberch hello, I started using my recumbent gently about 2-3 weeks after. Still use daily if even a few minutes to get the fluids moving and help with the joint stiffness. It's more manageable to warm up with seat back further and move forward a notch or two as I warm up. I find/found his videos very helpful and reassuring. Best of luck to you on your surgery!
