Thank you so so much Tony, I had TKR 5x weeks ago and have been struggling. My physician told me yesterday how disappointed he was with my progress, this upset me as I have been in so much pain and felt very much on my own, his support to move forward would have been far more appreciated.
Watched your video this morning the way you teach is uplifting. I feel like this has set me free and will give me the confidence to go back to work in a couple of weeks.

Dr Tony, this might actually be the most helpful video you've given us. At sixteen weeks, I'm still struggling for grace and speed. These simple exercises expose the physical reasons I'm having difficulty. Pain, snapping and other annoyances are highlighted by the individual movements and it's easy to see why I'm not walking properly yet. So often, I can't figure out what's really going on just by analyzing. Thank you for caring about us!
Many thanks to Carolyn from the Facebook support group for sharing this video on our page today!

I have had severe knee problems since age 12 and have always been self conscious about my gait, especially with PTs saying something about it. Following my knee replacement in August 2024 I focused initially on bending my knee while I walked. Quickly I advanced to focusing on heel strike and toe push off as I walked. Last week without thinking about it, I started walking more naturally at 8 weeks. I realized that it was more of a rolling sensation between the heel strike and toe push off that made my gait more comfortable. Also I try to bend my knee behind me a little to give me better momentum. Just sharing my personal experience.

Simply said top shelf. I’ve viewed many you tube videos, your friendly professional approach is spot on. I’m 14 weeks post knee replacement, walking is a huge concern. After walking maybe 500 steps I start dropping my shoulder then waddle ,which cause me to shorten my walk or simply stop. I’ve been using my tree poles and I’m good, actually perfect go for my intended time. Great tips , hallway, massage on steps , you are a strong asset for your profession. Thanks John F

Hi Dr Tony, I am in Australia and had a Right knee replacement 3 months ago. I've just turned 79. At the time the hospital Physio department was closed due to Covid although I did get transferred to the Physio ward, but in isolation, with1 to 2 very limited sessions for 3 days. After going home there was no home physio only 1/2 hour once every two weeks in outpatients physio dept! Sent home with a few exercises and wide plastic stretchy to tie around my feet and stretch against. For 12 weeks prior to op, although not held every week, I was part of a trial programme to strengthen my knees as much as possible prior to surgery and I'm sure that has helped a lot and I continue to do most of those exercises. I have spent most of my rehab time watching your videos and am working towards 120 deg bend. (I have 110 deg now) I would love to eventually be able to kneel and renew my CPR Cert, required, as I was a volunteer driver with the local Royal Flying Doctor Community Service Programme. I had my left knee replaced 11 yrs ago and was able to kneel. Balanced walking is my big challenge at the moment! Thank you so much for these videos as they are helping me greatly, Margie in Oz.

Thanks so much for this. After working on much bending of the knee, which was not bending much (only up to 115 degrees in range motion), my therapist saw my quads were weak in the surgical leg. We weren't really working on this at all during the weeks we were working on bending. Now she's saying that I am not pushing myself at home when exercising at home, because I'm towards the end of therapy and I cannot get the leg up for a lying position. I wanted to tell her we didn't work much on this before, but didn't. You seem like a great therapist.

Hi I have just watched this and think it is fantastic! To see something visually is so helpful to me I get a mental picture to replicate. I am struggling with the bend and swing my leg through seeing your knee action and the build up to movement using hall is brilliant. I was getting fed up of asking people to look at me walking and not really getting any clear actions to work on to improve. I shall be doing these slowly I like to move fast and that is a problem muscle memory. Keep up your good work thankyou.

    Greeting sir
Orthoscopic surgery was done for knee bending. Suggest some tablets or something along with stiff knee exercises to reduce daily stiffness and reduce the process of adhesion regeneration. I exercise three times a day and when I start exercising again, my knees become stiff. It's been 45 days since I started exercising. The knee bends 120 degrees due to exercise but then becomes stiff again and the pain lasts the whole day.

Two weeks now and I’m still taking my time to get past 90 degree angle. It takes me about 15 mins of gradually building up to 90 degrees. Then only then I can go max aprox 110 degrees. But some ppl are telling me I should be going straight to 90 first go. I’m still no where near straightening my leg on chair lifting my leg straight out but can do it lying on floor lifting my leg straight up. I’ve been on crutches from day one and now I’m practicing with one crutch on my good side once I get going I’m doing better. I shall be doing your exercises on walking without any crutch or stick soon as poss. Thank you for really good help on understanding how it really is. It don’t happen overnight obviously like some ppl think or have been told. My supervisor thinks I’m going to be back in work in 6 weeks of opp cos she’s heard someone say they were able to go to work after 6 weeks then find out the person she knows has a sit down in office job. I’m a caretaker up and down stairs all day carrying mop buckets brooms and other cleaning stuff 32 blocks to clean over 5 days. So ppl who haven’t experienced total knee replacement should keep quiet. Thanks again for this helpful video

Hi Tony.. what would u suggest for someone with bilateral TKR. Something that would help with walking without limping.

  • @jouuueee
    @jouuueee 4 года назад +7

Unbeknownst to me I'd been practicing desensitization. I had knee replacement done January 28th of this year so I'm just a month out. I'm doing really well and I attribute some of that wellness which translates into mobility flexibility and strength to to that concept of relaxing the muscles letting them behave naturally and also a lot of ice. One activity that seems outwardly unorthodox was in the morning while still in bed and after doing some stretching and flexing in the bed I would swing my butt to the headboard and get it as close to the headboard as possible so that I could raise my legs up onto the wall. Once I was in a comfortable position with a pillow underneath my lower back I would let my legs slowly on their own sink down into a comfortable squat. It wasn't forced and when it became uncomfortable I would slide my foot up the wall which engaged my quad glute and hamstring that wasn't comfortable but that's physical therapy. I did this two or three times a day and with each time I could see improvements and the flexion of my leg. as a result in physical therapy we've had to work more on straightening my leg than bending my leg. I am 130 flexion and zero straightness. Let me know what you think about using the wall and gravity allowing your legs to relax into a comfortable squat

Thank you for this video. I am 64, overweight, and looking to have my knees evaluated next week for possible knee replacement surgery. With that upcoming appointment happening I have been dieting to try to lose weight to make recovery easier. I walk with stiff knee on the left side. Both knees have tissue degeneration, but discomfort and movement is worse in the left. I tried the movement you showed in the 'hallway'. I can bend my knee to take a step without problem. But when I try to swing that leg forward and straighten it, it catches or locks with discomfort before it will release to straighten fully. Until seeing your video, I had never really looked at the process of that before. Thank you

Hi Tony, thanks for showing us these. It feels like youve been watching me ....the straight leg thing is exactly how I've been walking for the past 20 years! But ive now had tkr on both knees and stuggling with hip and back pain.
I'm worried about how much to do with the plank, and how many times a day, can you advise me please?

Tony I watch your videos every day since my TKR almost two months ago. I am walking at home without any cane now. So I want to walk normally, only thing how soon I will be able to walk normally? Thank you for your videos.

I have limped habitually for 14 years after injuring my leg on a hamstring curl machine - the injury has healed but how do I reprogramme my gait?

Hi Tony.Does the other knee gets weak eventually.I mean if you have undergone tkr for one will u need another after few years . What I'm observing is, after one year of tkr the other one sometimes doesn't behave.I think I'm not putting enough weight on my operated leg.so the other one is getting overloaded.
Thanks for these exercises.I will start doing them now.Wishing u happy new year. 🙏

I’m experiencing this. My “good knee” which was perfect before my surgery, is acting up and becoming extremely sore. I don’t want to have this surgery ever again!

Hi Tony, I'm reviewing many of your videos. I'm progressing well at 12 weeks on LTKR, but I am having a sharp pain on the lateral side just below the knee. I was bow-legged. Now I'm more or less straight on one leg and bowed on the other (no surgery yet on the right). Are there exercises I can do to work out muscle kinks and charlie horse problems on the lateral side? I just think I'm learning how to walk again, and I want to give that leg a better chance. By the way, I learn more from your videos than I did in 6 weeks of PT. Thank you!

Problem is I have both surgical sides, so since I have two peg legs now I have nothing normal to compare with..much harder to walk.

Great video and explanation. I’m only 6 days post surgery. Can I start these exercises now if my pain is adequately controlled or do I need to heal a bit more? Thanks so much.

I’ve had numerous knee surgeries on the same knee due to infections. My last surgery was 8 years ago. I’m very unstable on that knee, and I have a limp, it also buckles and has caused me multiple falls & other injuries (torn patellar tendon, torn quad tendon). My question is; Do you think that physical therapy can help me get my stability back? I’m scared to go back to my Orthopedic surgeon, because I don’t want another surgery 😭😂. Any advice is much appreciated. 🦋

How soon after surgery should I start these exercises?

Everyone is different, but in the clinic under the supervision of a physical therapist these exercises could be started the first week post op. We use the walls of the hallway to replace the walker during the first couple sessions.

Thanks Anthony. I have had bilateral knee replacements. I m Week 5 now. Still using the walker. What walking exercises would you recommend for bilateral? Thank you.

Thank you so much for your videos. I’ve had a bilateral knee replacement and I feel now I have knock knees and I’m wondering when I’d get my normal walk back. Is it alright"

If you were bowed before, it is common to feel knock knee now. But with practice and a great therapist you will get back to normal in time.

I'm four weeks out. The therapist tells me to bend it, not baby it, etc. I'm so frustrated.
