I had both knee joints replaced within two years, no cartilage in both on one side, I was nearly suicidal with the pain before the replacements. Fortunately for me I was given the proper physio after both opps and it was one of the best things I ever did, The correct physio is very important or you will be wasting your time getting the replacements. Good video.
My surgeon's Physician's Assistant basically said that at 3 weeks a person should have normal or nearly-normal range of motion and not being able to bend past 90 degrees means a person is not trying hard enough, but that sounds too ambitious and unusual. I read that a majority of people may not be able to bend their knees normally until 6 months. I could not bend my leg at all for some 3 weeks after surgery but now after some 5 weeks I am bending my knee slightly past 90 degrees in a sitting position and can sit comfortably (basically) at that range. Of course pain can vary by day or by certain times of the day. But it is comforting to hear in this video that my progress is actually not abnormal. I actually find if I push that mush past pain (and I have been doing so) my leg feels worse and I cannot walk without pain or stiffness for hours afterward. A workout in which I listen to my body, has better results. I'm trying not to get depressed or anxious worrying that other people (who have had TKR) make better progress sooner than I have done or am doing. At physical therapy I have been lucky so far to work with one therapist who tells me to do as much as I can definitely but without going that far past my pain threshold as that can do harm too. In some three PT sessions ( separated by a few days) I have done better even though progress is not overnight. The PT also says I have done a good job of massaging much of my scar tissue and "Breaking it up." There is still a long way to go and I have to hope all goes well but it seems that for me, I may take a bit more time than others.
It is so refreshing to read this , my mother is on day 12 and she can probably bend about 50-60 degrees , I was worried reading all the comments that we are being or if we missed the bus , thank you for this comment
I have experienced more or less the same as you. I have been frustrated as other people seem to be getting a better bend than I was achieving, and I worried and fretted that I would never achieve a full bend. There is so much different information on total knee surgery and so much information that is not given before surgery. I would never want this surgery again
Had tkr on my right knee 7th of march this year. Bending: heel against my behind. Stretch: complete. Had pain? Absolutely! My age: 67. It can be done but it takes discipline….
I just got my second knee replacement - first one was a year ago this past july. I suffered for a decade with knee pain. Prior to last years surgery I had to use a walker. The first replacement was a brief game changer. After a frw months, the bad knee got a lot worse. My new knee took a beating but no pain at all. My issue now is retraining my body to wslk properly. It compensated to the point that I waddle. I don't swing my arms when i walk. Your video was wonderful. You are thorough and extremely knowledgeable. Any pointers for improving my gait? Thank you!!!
Had a TKR a week ago. I'm 72. Am mobilising much more quickly than I expected but bed based bending exercises hurting a lot. Think I overdid it ABIT and your video has given me much more detailed guidance and I'll keep the idea of not too much or not too little in mind from now on.amy thanks
I am about 1 month out and yesterday in PT had 135 degrees flexing and extension. But had 120 flexing 1 day after surgery. Have great PT people and surgeon. It’s hard work but I am determined to return to work at 6 weeks.. l did a lot of pre surgery strength and yoga. So glad I did this and plan to have other knee done in September
Thank you for the very clear and concise video, this has reassured me no end, had my total knee replacement last week. Feel so much better for watching this.
Hello and thank you so much for this video. I’m 59 and just had my second TKR ( the opposite knee). Week one post op I was at 113 degrees and my surgeon and I were thrilled. I continue to have great ROM 3 weeks out of surgery but have have weakness and pain which is very discouraging. I do believe I did way too much too early in. Thank you for your explanations on the proper ways to recover and how to give our body the rest it needs when necessary. You were clear and understandable!
7 months after surgery and still at 117 degrees with help from PT and it's a painful 117. Still wakes me up at night hurting on the outside of the knee. Not really better off yet.
Within 2 1/2 months I was at 134. I was at 110 degrees at 2 weeks. But I worked it hard 10 times an hour from the moment I was brought back to my room. Put leg on a foot stool and pushed it as straight as I could stand for 10 seconds 10 reps every hr then put foot on ground threw a towel around ankle and pulled it as far as I could stand bending it 10 seconds and 10 reps every hour for two first two weeks. Everyone was freaked out how much mobility I had when they seen me. My advice is start bending it as much as your pain level will allow you to from the moment your out of surgery.
Thank you for this. It was extremely useful and informative. I had a knee replacement four weeks ago but other than a few exercises in a leaflet the hospital gave me I have been on my own hoping that I was not doing too much or too little. The biggest problem now is that I have significant nerve pain over the kneecap which is very debilitating.
I am 13 days from my second knee replacement. I have also had both hips and spine surgeries with fusions. I believe the amount of pain in knee replacements is shocking for some. I find it much more painful than my hip replacements. Now off to physio having a 100 degree bend which I began working on as soon as possible in my bed after surgery. The pain is difficult but I can move my other replaced knee to touch my butt so the work will always be there. Thank you for your excellent video -we are all different and should not compare ourselves to someone else . It is individual recovery depending on that persons body, health and level of exercise prior and post. Thank you .
Strange isn’t it. I had a knee revision, old artificial knee replaced after 23 years with new artificial knee, 4 months ago. I had mild pain for 1 week then no pain at all. The knee is recovering very well I have 130 deg flexion
I had bi-lateral replacements in 2015 at hospital a long distance from my home and was not allowed to leave until I could both knees 90 degrees. I continued the recommended exercises at home with continued improvement. Not knowing how to measure the number of degrees of bend I believe I have about 130 degrees or so. Osteoarthritis had cause me to become very “knock kneed.” I have learned and continue to learn so much from you. I am very anxious to have your new book.
Excellent story and advice. I have always been dismayed by the development of scar tissue during my second day after surgery. It seemed as though the doctor felt his work was done, and that recovery would just magically happen. During day 2 I went from being able to support my weight with a handrail and go up and down a stair before they released me from the hospital, to hardly being able to bend it at all as you described. In hindsight I've assumed that I'd been too eager to get off drugs, let the swelling and pain go down, and been overly concerned with my surgeon's story of an athletic doctor patient of his that overdid the PT too soon after knee replacement and had to go back in for surgery within the first three months. I've always wondered if I'd moved it for 5 minutes every 30 minutes to an hour for first 24-48 hours or so, that perhaps I could have prevented the scar tissue from forming. So then I wouldn't have had to fight so hard and worry so much about getting the range of motion and functionality back. I guess I could look it up, but other's might be interested p.s. I had my knee replaced 5 years ago and it's great now: I can use it and exercise and strengthen my quads 10 times easier than before with arthritis. I don't quite have the range of motion of the other leg - that heel comes within 3" of my buttocks, whereas the other is 5-6" away. But my doctor advised against trying to get anymore orange of motion to prevent the joint from becoming too loose and allowing the joint to hyperextend.
There is info But I think what everyone wants to know is what day/time immediately after a TKR do you start practising bending. the next day,day3,day4??????? not what happens 1,2,3 weeks after TKR.
Had left TKR Oct 30/24. Hospital had me in physio doing bends the day after surgery… This was far less painful than my hip replacement in March but still extremely painful nonetheless lol… just be committed to doing ROM exercises three times a day😊🇨🇦
Glad to have found an English physio giving me information. I'm 8 weeks post op. Had 3 physio sessions and of to see surgeon on Monday. Have been a terrible patient and baby at 66. Up to 120 bend but 3 times now I have a blood blister come up right on tightest park of knee and if I bend too much, blood breaks through. Did do aqaua boost last week, 30 minutes in the pool, not going today as physio thought might have softened skin to much. Holding be back just a bit. 🙁
Just "found" you. I'm 5 days out after total knee replacement. Mine was from a torn POSTERIOR cruciate ligament injury (rare) that just wouldn't stop hurting and continued to lose ROM. Your video was really helpful. Now I understand the "stiffness" that's set in. I'm manually moving it to get a small bend. I was disappointed because day 1 I had such a greater range. Helps a lot psychologically to know this normal. It's super helpful to know what to expect in the following weeks and months.
So pleased my video came at the right time for you and that I could shed some light on what you're experiencing - I'm wishing you all the best in your rehabilitation and recovery :)
I am from Pakistan agedv48.I had done my Rt TKR on 2nd May 24. I did physiotherapy sessions for 15 minutes in first week in hospital twice a day. Then one hour daily at home . I couldn't do straight leg raises till bout 6 weeks post op.Same goes for bending.Still at about 45 or 50 degrees.Dont know what to do.I don't do any bending myself at home as I had excruciating pain after TKR.My days were spent managing the pain post op.Only walked with the help of Frame, as it wasn't that painful rather helped in pain a lot of times. No after about 7+weeks my physiotherapists has advised me to undergo MUA.Should I undergo MUA asap or wait till 3 month mark. Also kindly give me some insight why I am so late in bending,am I doing too little.I was also told by one doctor in 2003 that I have hyper mobility syndrome although not in very high grade range.
Thank you for making it simple I'm 2 weeks in and was wondering and worrying about it onlly seen my physio once he told me not to worry but you can't help it nearly at 90 now
My knee replacement is scheduled for next week. This has helped a lot with understanding the goals of physiotherapy. I begin PT a week post op. Thank you.
See if you can get home therapy. I had my TKR 6 weeks ago and I was at 90 degrees in the first week home. All because of the therapy. I’m now going 3 days a week and I’m at 110 degrees. It takes a lot of hard work and determination.
So good to hear a PT recognize that things can happen to individuals that go against the "norms." I had that happen in 2022 where I could only advance to a certain level in my therapy after hip replacement. I had six of them during that time. Two of them made my problems worse, three of them accused me of not doing my homework, Three more accused me of faking it to get attention. The true cause of my problems came out in pelvic floor rehab, when I started having the same old, same old problems even though my therapy had nothing to do with working those muscle that had been so stubborn before. After a lot of pain and plenty of tests, it was discovered that my knee was arthritic on every plane and the cartilage was gone. I injured it 60 years ago and the arthritis had shown up 30 years ago. Over the years, that leg had a cast from hip to toe right after the injury, numerous fluid drainages and cortisone shots, and a whole lot of exercise therapy. By doing these things and probably my body learning new tricks to compensate for the bad knee, things that probably contribute to overworking those two muscles that keep getting inflamed now, But now, the knee has run its course and did the best it could for all of those years, and I will be having my knee replace on January 7. I hope that afterwards I can find a PT who is as understanding as the gentleman in this video and who knows that sometimes the "standard" protocol just doesn't work like they think it should. People are not textbook scenarios.
Thank you for the way you explain, I just did my surgery to my knee 7 days ago ,and was good advice I was worry but now after I listing to you I will okay
Excellent video ,good to hear that it is still possible to gain good flexibility even if you are behind .I am 11 days post surgery, had a problem over the last few days with considerable swelling in my calf and foot which I felt has stopped the progress. Was becoming dispondant...but not now
I had a TKR at 46yrs old, i had no physio for the 1st 4 weeks, i stopped taking any meds after 2 weeks due to terrible side effects. Im approaching 6 months post op. My mental health has suffered terribly. I was not aware that I would go from an extremely painful but almost fully usable knee to a pain-free very restricted 1. I have done everything that has been asked of me and more, all the exercises, stretches, walking, stairs, 6 weeks of weekly sessions at the gym where I did leg press, bench press, running, cycling etc, however I still cannot bend my leg properly to get in and out of my car, I can not kneel down even on my mattress, I can't cut my own toe nails and some days it's really difficult to go down the stairs, I was supposed to see my surgeon after a 2 month gap however there are now no appointments and I've just been left on a waiting list so have no actual idea when I will see my surgeon again. I'm worried that leaving my leg so long without intervention could jepodise wheather it gets more flexibility or will it always remain with these restrictions? My leg physically feels like it wants to bend but it just can't, even when I've tried to get someone to help bend it for me it just doesn't happen. What do u advise please? I know I can't turn the clock back but if I could I'd definitely opt to not have had this done.
Thank you. I am 5 months post bilateral knee replacement. After PT stopped I began aqua therapy in the pool, especially doing aqua jogging with an aqua belt. I think doing that helped me tremendously, but I don’t know my bend - it looks much more than 120 - how can I measure.
God bless you, Sir. Regarding your story at the end of your video.... It's, so TRUE! My physical therapist has been telling me that for the past couple of weeks that I should not do so much when I'm at home. Well, I did slack up a bit on most days. However, I guess it wasn't enough. I was sick with the flu 2 weeks ago. I did the minimum at home and had a 5 day break of PT. When I returned, I was a bit more stiff with the same ROM. We worked o n it. I returned for my next session, which I had a day break in between and I went from my 114 ROM that I was at for almost 2 weeks then magically I stsrted moving again amd advance to 117 actively. I had been attending PT for 3 days a week for 6 weeks. My body needed a break. When I first started, it was advance every week a few degrees, and then suddenly, I couldn't gain additional flexion. You're a blessing 🙌🏽 Teresa❤
Had my left knee done in 2010. 53 years old. It is 14 years old and I had improvement until 18 months post op. Bend 110 degrees and full extension. 110 degrees was good because my knee was swollen for a long time. I was also told that the best I could get the first time around would be the best I could expect with my next replacement.
I had a total knee replacement early April following ligament damage 20 and 10 years ago. I’m 55, overweight but trying to lose weight and struggling to walk downstairs normally as I’m still finding it painful to bend my knee beyond 100 degrees. I’m driving a manual car every day and can cycle using my exercise pedals. Would swimming help and if so what’s the best way for me to get into a pool please?
Everyone is different I know several people who have had successful knee replacements (one person had a double knee and doing very well) But if I had to do it over again I would give myself 6 months to a year of everyday physio before surgery. Chances are you might not even need an operation but even if you do you will have strengthened the muscles around the knee and recovery and movement will be so much easier. In fact, what HT described is exactly what happened to me but eventually, I got to over 120 degrees of bend when I did more intensive physio. But the big bonus was my other knee is so much better now and in fact is almost as good as the knee that was replaced. Motion is definitely lotion.
Enjoyed your video. I've had to have a full leg brace on to help with ligament damage 😮, be glad when it's off next week (6weeks). Wasn't told much until my first physio when was told I could take it off when resting. Such a relief. Felt the first 2 weeks I was held back, but one wards and upwards for my holiday in November 😁👏
I am used to squatting but now I can't. Is it possible to fold my leg completely / sit on my haunches like I used to be able to do? I wasn't thinking and went down to squat today and it hurt like hell. If it is possible I will work to get there, but if it is not possible and/or if I can damage it then I won't. Doctors and PTs never give me a direct answer.
@user-ej8iq9jz1g The surgery may not have been done right. But also it could take you more time. I think with me there is a pretty good chance the surgery was not done exactly right but medical professionals tell me that it is I who am not trying hard enough.
Is it possible to bend more than indicated in the properties of a particular implant? The reason why I ask is that you mentioned your preference around 140 degrees instead of 120. Does this mean at the same time that it's advisable to choose an implant which is capable for this?
Thank you. I just had my knee replaced at the 2-week mark. I have a 90-degree motion. I am pleased with the results. I like what you said in your video I am afraid I am doing too much or too little exercise. I had glue instead of stitches. So far so good. Thank you for relieving my mind with this video. I guess I am right on track.
Going on 5 weeks post-op and PT measures 105 degrees, I still have some odd feeling in the thigh muscle and skin around the knee. Worst pain in my 71 years for the first 3 weeks
I am going into 6 weeks after TKR and knee is only at 105 with a lot of pain during PT. My other leg only flexes to 107 and is not a candidate for TKR due to past trauma and poor vascular issues. I have never experienced pain like this and I have had 2 external fixation devices on my right leg and my bone lengthened by an inch. I am trying my best. PT 3x wk. still using walker, too unstable with cane. I am 59 yrs. Old.
@@amyfountain2849 it’s been 4 more weeks and the pain has only subsided a very tiny bit. The pain at night builds from the daytime activities. Doctor said this is normal and the swelling means more blood flow for healing to the are. IF I KNEW THIS… I would not have had this surgery
I'm between 6 and 7 weeks and I'm so much better than I was before surgery it's great. I'm already doing more than I did before my surgery but I probably waited about 7 or 8 years to long.
How are you feeling now a few weeks later? I hope your pain and bend is better. It’s the most difficult surgery I’ve had! But I know we will get stronger -I have already completely recovered from my other knee replacement. .
@@christineinverarity5109 thank you…the bend is better but the outer side of the knee joint still sore, feels tight and aches….definable better but I am so surprised it has taken this long
This is so useful. If only I could get physio. The NHS is a lottery. Four weeks post op, still no NHS physio available until week 6 . Post OP NHS care is appalling. No after care ,no physio. You're left on your own with little to no support 12:36
I agree. TBF the hospital did keep in touch and I was asked for regular reports and video clips. But no arrangements were made for physio. I found it easy to see a physio at GP surgery for one off sessions but no programme was available. You need a lot of self discipline to devise and stick to the hospital's recommended exercises.
I'm 7 months post tkr. I was very upset to learn that I won't ever be able to sit all the way back on my feet/heels. I could do this now, but my surgeon said I'd stretch the MCL and LCL and eventually not have enough stability. As someone who likes to do yoga, and sit on the floor, and garden, that's a normal thing to do when you're moving around on the floor. What's your opinion?
It’s been almost a year and a half since my husband TKR. He has worked relentlessly to get past 90 degree bend. He’s active , goes to gym and still doing the PT exercises from his PT sessions. He even went to another Pt and paid out of pocket for a good bit. Still only at 90 degrees. Can you recommend something he should be doing ? He needs the other knee done but wants a better bend before he does that. Thanks In Advance.
No exactly, I am 75 years old; I had both knees done, the right first and the left 6 weeks later. The biggest problem was not the knees to begin with, it was with the pain medication, and that fact that it bound me up. I am not one to take medication, thankfully I got of the pills as face as possible and now I am on the mend. According to my Doctor he said that the maximum bend is Now 130 deg. normal leg can bend 150 deg. Presently I and at 119 deg on each knees with the right leg being the strongest. Today I have little knee pain, I have had physical therapy for the most part three times a week and I have been working out on my own on the other days. I use to run and walk then started ridding a bike daily. When they do the surgery they set the leg at 130 degrees. After the surgery the next day it gets stiff and there is swelling. As I have seen people that are still going to therapy over a year later and still no doing that well, I leave you with one thought if you don't work out and follow the instructions the don't expect it to happen. I expect to be in great shape after 6 months and at the 1 year mark to be fantastic. Do the work you will be glad you did.
Can you ever get enough bend that you can kneel and sit back on your heels. Before I injured the knee and required surgery I could do that. Will I ever be able to do that again?
Hi Will. I'm 64 and I am having a left lateral unicompartmental knee replacement this Thursday, July 11. I can squat, kneel and nearly get my legs into a lotus position. Apparently I have always had lax ligaments and this probably caused the problem I am now facing. Is it really not possible to do these moves again? So much conflicting advice and patient stories about this. I just want my joint to do the same things as before. Am I being unrealistic?
3 weeks post surgery. Physical therapy started the day after. Severe swelling even with elevation and ice multiple times a day. The swelling and inflammation caused the majority of the stiffness. Once that went down, flexion became easier. Am now at 10 degrees extended, 80 degrees bent. Yesterday my therapist said she’s not gonna (us slang for going to 😂) try to get me to touch my bum. She plans to work me to it gradually. I have three pools and the Atlantic Ocean right outside my door so as soon as I’m cleared for swimming, plan on daily aqua therapy
No one is saying how much pain the patient should expect for the ideal results of say 90 degrees after 2 weeks, 100 after 3. Is that pain free / almost pain free or as long as it bends regardless of discomfort? Also, when working on ROM exercises, are we supposed to do it as far as it can go and just suck it up, even if the pain makes you sick to your stomach for an hour OR as far as you can tolerate the pain and still get 10 done before you can't take it any more and ready to do it again in 30 minutes OR just to some pain and you could do another set of 10 again after 5 minutes? There is a significant difference in bend angle between those, at least for me. I don't know, maybe for most people, ROM is more of a hard stop rather than a constant increase in pain as it keeps going.
Five weeks since total replacement-I went from 70 to 80 to now 115 degrees….I’m 76 years old. Finally getting some night sleep after some brutal weeks of not sleeping much and waking up in pain
I lost a weeks worth of exercise due to a ridiculous amount of swelling of my whole leg. I felt my whole leg and incision were going to pop open if I stretched it too much. The rest of my body wants to bend it to like 120* but my incision and muscles say no way. And does anyone still have massive bruising at the 3 week mark? And I mean the whole leg.
Going on 7 weeks and at 6 weeks after excersizes I could get to 100. My Dr. had seen me at 2 weeks when I was at 70 and told me he doubted I would be able to get to 115 by my self . So I came back at 6 weeks and like I said before barely 100 degrees. So last week I went under anesthesia for a manipulation A n d truly I dont think it helped much. My knee feels weaker and is back to hurting and having to ice it all the time. The PT bootcamp for 12 days straight is alot. Have you ever seen anyone get to 120 with these problems?
Is anyone using the pool? I hate walking. I did have infection and so I’m going slower. There is no way I can walk more than 2 blocks I feel overall sickness. Pool is 1 hour. I am sore but not like after surgery. Been2 1/2 months. So warm after pool is a good idea. Proper planning and have the rest home set up because everyone falls.
HI I just found you! Is physiotherapy different than physical therapy? My PT was excellent but they did not do any hands on to help me bend. I had my tkr 2+ years ago and did well with recovery but am frustrated with the remaining issues. I think I have about 130 or 135 degrees but cannot do butt to heels, child's pose , or deep squats despite being very active. It is this bit of lump and pain behind my knee toward the outer edge. I would even go back into surgery to get this problem to go away and noone has any answers.I"m young 56 now and am very active wanting this to go away. I am doing some knees over toes work (youtube) and some tens unit. Do you think those will help? Thank you so much if you are able to respond and if there is a physiotherapist (if different than pt) in my area maybe I should see one.
@susannesacco1721 I get the feeling that that is possibly my situation. I got the surgery so as to better bend my knee as it hurt a lot to do butt to heel and the knee felt swollen. But now AFTER the surgery it is no better regarding that. I must emphasize I could have as much as a year until I am able to do butt to heel as my surgery was only 5 weeks ago and I am making slow progress but I can understand that you need answers and no medical professional can or would give you any.
There are new knee replacements that are rated to 155 degrees of flexion. The reason I am getting TKR is because my knee will not bend past 90 degrees.
You need to check with your surgeon. The knee replacement I have has a maximum of 130° of flexion, meaning before the surgeon even placed the components in, right out of the box that is the maximum it can bend because of the metal plate in the back that takes the place of the ACL. I live in New England, and all the major joint replacement centers around here aim for 90 degrees by the end of the first week, not 3 to 4 weeks. I wonder if this information is different because it is a different country?
I got close to 120, that’s all. I’m going on 16 months, and still working it. I have exercise I do at the gym I need the other knee done, but not sure I’m ready mentally. I know what I did wrong on the first knee, I should’ve forced the bend, no matter the pain
Thanks for great info! I'm 7 weeks post op and still attending physio. My ability to bend my knee varies. some days the stiffness and pain is too much and others I am fine. I need to find a balance. I bend between 95 - 100 degrees on a good day without too much pain. It's a work in progress and as you said, we need to find the "sweet spot" balance. Cheers!
My week old total knee replacement knee over bent I screamed it was so painfull. I made it back to bed scared I did something wrong . The incision is ok but I can’t lift my leg now. 😢
I'm 7 weeks Im only bending my maybe a 100. Im going back to gym next week. The Physio for seniors is horrible in Canada, 30 mins a week once a week. After that $110 a session. The Government is disgraceful. Do it all yourself.
I had a tkr 8 weeks ago and I bend at 115 on my own with the physical therapist help he gets me to 119 but he wants me to be able to bend to 120 on my I think If I loose about 10 more lbs I can do it im 5 "3 ....204 lbs (my knees are thick)😂😂

Fortunately for me I was given the proper physio after both opps and it was one of the best things I ever did, The correct physio is very important or you will be wasting your time getting the replacements. Good video.
Had surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago and am able to bend to 125 degrees - 70 years old - hopefully get back to full function by 6 weeks!
About the most bend you will get after knee replacement surgery is around 140 degrees.I find the hardest part is getting the knee straight again.
How are you now? Was the pain excruciating?
The PT also says I have done a good job of massaging much of my scar tissue and "Breaking it up."
There is still a long way to go and I have to hope all goes well but it seems that for me, I may take a bit more time than others.
How are you doing now?
It is so refreshing to read this , my mother is on day 12 and she can probably bend about 50-60 degrees , I was worried reading all the comments that we are being or if we missed the bus , thank you for this comment
I’m with you on the knee bend. What is the rush on reaching 120 anyway?!
😊
I have experienced more or less the same as you. I have been frustrated as other people seem to be getting a better bend than I was achieving, and I worried and fretted that I would never achieve a full bend. There is so much different information on total knee surgery and so much information that is not given before surgery. I would never want this surgery again
Had tkr on my right knee 7th of march this year. Bending: heel against my behind. Stretch: complete. Had pain? Absolutely! My age: 67. It can be done but it takes discipline….
Excellent advice. I was doing exercises everyday and taking a day of rest now and then has helped me so much! So glad I came across this video!
How are you making out now and how many months out are you?
Although I feel I have recovered well from my knee replacement it was great to hear your sound advice, reassuring and so calming, thanks so much😊
Thank you for the very clear and concise video, this has reassured me no end, had my total knee replacement last week.
Wow, your pain tolerance is very good. I'm at 8 weeks at 115 degree.
8 weeks 120 looking for 130
Thank you for this.
Fantastic! I wondered if knee replacement version was easier since they didn’t cut the bone again. Your recovery is terrific! You inspire others !
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! They made me think about the recover period a bit more!
I guess I could look it up, but other's might be interested
@KermitCyrus
@KermitCyrus
Wow that is quite a story. It goes to show we all heal differently.
There is info
But I think what everyone wants to know is what day/time immediately after a TKR do you start practising bending.
the next day,day3,day4???????
not what happens 1,2,3 weeks after TKR.
Had left TKR Oct 30/24. Hospital had me in physio doing bends the day after surgery… This was far less painful than my hip replacement in March but still extremely painful nonetheless lol… just be committed to doing ROM exercises three times a day😊🇨🇦
I had mine same day. How's it going? @gabriellafox7948
You’re a real blessing
thank you :)
Good day eveary year about the same time I seem to get inflametary
knee after a knee replacement
Thank you
Edward
You're a blessing 🙌🏽
Teresa❤
Had my left knee done in 2010. 53 years old. It is 14 years old and I had improvement until 18 months post op. Bend 110 degrees and full extension. 110 degrees was good because my knee was swollen for a long time. I was also told that the best I could get the first time around would be the best I could expect with my next replacement.
Hi! And how do you walk? Can you do all the stuff in your daily life?
Will Person having 30 degree fixed flexion deformity with further flexion up to 120 degree after tkr walk with out pain and limp in future?
I had Bilateral TKR and I’m 10 months since surgery no pain or stiffness but struggle with stairs still.
It’s been 13 months and my knee still hurts. Stairs are difficult.
It'll bend more than you can stand. Get er done.. if you had a knee that really needed replaced, it's a blessing.
But I know we will get stronger -I have already completely recovered from my other knee replacement. .
@@christineinverarity5109 thank you…the bend is better but the outer side of the knee joint still sore, feels tight and aches….definable better but I am so surprised it has taken this long
Great and reassuring information - thank you
This is so useful.
Had bilateral knee replacement 5 weeks and 5 days and I am at 122, both. Right knee is more of a struggle then left.
6:18 I think you get more bend on your legs if the seat is lower.
Hello,are you a private physician?
Excellent video
I had a total knee replacement five weeks ago and I’m at 114 degrees of bend. Is this ok?
Five weeks since total replacement-I went from 70 to 80 to now 115 degrees….I’m 76 years old. Finally getting some night sleep after some brutal weeks of not sleeping much and waking up in pain
I'm sorry to hear about your sleepless nights, but I'm so pleased you're noticing steady improvements. I'm wishing you all the best in your recovery!
Good job! 70yo here with not as good results!
How about Tibia fracture exercise for 120•
I lost a weeks worth of exercise due to a ridiculous amount of swelling of my whole leg. I felt my whole leg and incision were going to pop open if I stretched it too much. The rest of my body wants to bend it to like 120* but my incision and muscles say no way. And does anyone still have massive bruising at the 3 week mark? And I mean the whole leg.
I am just under 3 months out and I have 120 degree range going back to work in 2 weeks. I am 52 tkr. Total straight
Going on 7 weeks and at 6 weeks after excersizes I could get to 100. My Dr. had seen me at 2 weeks when I was at 70 and told me he doubted I would be able to get to 115 by my self . So I came back at 6 weeks and like I said before barely 100 degrees. So last week I went under anesthesia for a manipulation
A n d truly I dont think it helped much.
I can bend 120 pre surgery. does that help ?
I am 15 degree at three month after total knee how is that
There are new knee replacements that are rated to 155 degrees of flexion. The reason I am getting TKR is because my knee will not bend past 90 degrees.
140%? Really? Never happened for me.
Why
@@SS.RS67camarom
I have to add that the knee replacement I had done 10 weeks ago has a 140 degree range and I have achieved that
Thanks for great info!
Then that means the stiffness does not come from bone on bone.
I am 9 weeks PO and i can only bend 75 degrees
I'm 7 weeks Im only bending my maybe a 100. Im going back to gym next week. The Physio for seniors is horrible in Canada, 30 mins a week once a week.
After that $110 a session. The Government is disgraceful.
Do it all yourself.
I had a tkr 8 weeks ago and I bend at 115 on my own with the physical therapist help he gets me to 119 but he wants me to be able to bend to 120 on my I think If I loose about 10 more lbs I can do it im 5 "3 ....204 lbs (my knees are thick)😂😂
So encouraged. I can sit on my foot with my good knee. Will Be be able to do child pose again?
At 6 weeks post op I'm at 115°
After three years, I am at 85 degrees
What if physio doesnt see you for 7 weeks.
Sorry about typos!
Please shows practically not only seeach
