A comparison of the ubiquitous 22 LR and 22 Magnum cartridges out of a small handgun.
The Classic Woodsman: / @theclassicwoodsman1390
I just purchased a Ruger LCRx in 22 magnum with a 3" Barrel! I will be using this Gun for Home Self Defense and sometime EDC! I have not shot this gun yet but will be shooting it shortly at my LGR which I visit once every week here in Sunny Florida! Now that I'm 78 years old, I have switched to the 22LR/22 Magnum Guns and I no longer have any more large caliber guns and stopped shooting them because of physical reasons due to Old Age! Now I can shoot the 22 guns just as good or better than I did with my larger caliber guns! I now have FIVE 22/22mag Handguns and a 22LR Rifle and I'm shooting more, having more fun and I'm saving much more money on Ammo! I am very Confident when I Carry a 22LR or a 22 Mag Gun for self defense! As we get older, we have to consider making adjustments in our life style and now Life is Good once again!
Well stated, I appreciate the testing here. Real world scenario, easy to digest without a bunch of fast-draw or posing.
Yeah I so 100% agree with you....those guys trying to act cool really annoy me and they actually look like stupid dorks doing that stuff....it's actually hilarious.lol
Two friends of mine were car jacked in 90's and shot with .22 in legs and torso. They were in hospital for a month and lots of rehab. .22 is no joke up close.
.22 lr is no joke, some guy posted shooting it at a windsheild into a dummy and the thing went right through. It’s the perfect assassin weapon for how easy it is to silence with subsonics or suppressor and honestly i completely beleive your story about your friend man. 22 is very understimated because of its size
@@nbachillzone8725 Ronald Reagan was almost killed by a .22 LR. The bullet stopped an inch from his heart. Small doesn't mean benign.
@@twistedyogert exactly
Just go with a 22 magnum
My brother died from a .22, it turned his heart into a tornado, he was only 21 years old
LR is also not as loud which may be an issue in some situations. I initially favored it for that reason and probably still do in a rifle. However the magnums performance advantage is pretty large and at a point in the spectrum where that advantage could have a great deal of real world import. So I am pretty well convinced that I will be getting a magnum revolver.
I like your channel. A clear and informative presentation on a complex subject. Very well done!
I love your reviews. I am 79 y/o and a lifetime shooter. You are one of the best!
Thanks sir
I cant say I have ever had a CCI dud.
That's why I buy them. Always reliable.
I have the bugout 2. 1.5 inch barrel. I carry it everyday. Its just so easy to carry your crazy if you dont.
The .22 mag had some good penetration. Thank you
I agree the 22 is good for a bug out weapon . Evasion is key in lot's survival situations and the versatility of 22 (let's count the ways) is just far more beneficial for the role .
The .22 magnum is no slouch. Out of my NAA Black Widow, it penetrated a 4x4 at point blank range.
Wow! That's serious penetration imho.
yep its a great little round, and i have no doubt it could do what you need it to do. BUUUUUT lets not pretend it should be most ppls 1st choice for defense, but i love my 22 mags.
What make was the 4x4? I've owned Jeep, Toyota, and Fords. Never shot anything of them, though..
Wish mine would do that. Full metal jacket out of mine would never do that. My 38 special will not even do it.

In Paul Harrell's video - ".22 Long Rifle vs. . 22 Magnum." he uses NAA revolvers with 1¼" barrels. With .22 lr CCI Mini Mag he achieved a mean velocity of 740 fps., and with .22 WMR CCI Maxi Mag he achieved a mean velocity of 910 fps, an increase of over 23% in velocity.
I never knew he had a presentation on the subject, especially on Mini revolvers. It goes to show that results may vary.
Good video. The next time you hear someone down play the 22s, ask them if they would like to shot with one. Earlier this year when things were getting wild, of my many hand guns, I carried the Black Widow, because of light weight and ease of use. All bullets make a hole. You just have to make it in the right spot.
🥇👍👍🤣🤣🤣👍
Assassins of today use the 22lr for a reason,it’s bounces all over your chest cavity like an arcade game.it travels leas5 path of resistance.Pres REAGEN’s assassin used a 8 rd Saturday nigh5 special and took down 4 people and almost killed the potus.Robert Kennedy same thing, unfortunately.I have seen the damage th3 22lr causes,a lot of internal bleeding
@@josephfemoyer7218 well, you're simply wrong about it "bouncing all over" because it just doesn't happen.
Exactly. Just ordered my heritage barkeep in 22LR and I wouldn't want to get shot by that bad boy. Very concealable and just as lethal as any.
Would you voluntarily get shot with a squirt gun full of piss? No? Oh well that must mean piss is a adequate self defense projectile. 🤡
22 can stop a man but it's substantially less likely to compared to normal stuff. But 22s do have a advantage in recoil and concealment
Great test and a lot of work. It is worth while to put the L.R. vs the Magnum in perspective in that the Magnum is about 60% better as a self defense weapon..that is a lot better!
I came here while searching for 22mag vs 9mm carbine comparison out to 50 plus yards . No luck, but your video is appreciated.
Thanks for the upload.
Was sooo cool watching that gel catch those bullets. Great test brother
One of the Very BEST firearm evaluation cnannels on RUclips.
All info............NO BS.
I like the 22 Magnum. My wife prefers the 22 long rifle. Both are deadly
75 FPS gave it over half again as much penetration.. that’s very interesting.
That's the fun part of gun videos, being surprised by penetration tests.
It’s not just about bullet speed. It’s also about construction. The two are obviously different.
@@davidmathews2124 neither bullet expanded so I don’t think construction has anything to do with the penetration. The .22mag does have a little bit of a meplat , so if anything the bullet shape(construction) of the 22 mag would reduce its penetration. That’s how I see it anyway.
Energy is a parabolic curve so the energy is a squared factor. At 1000 fps, the energy multiplier per grain is 2.22, while at 2000 fps it is 8.88 fp per grain and at 3000 fps it is 20 fp per grain.

I have an NAA Pug and a Glock 44. There are great barrel length differences so the WMR and 22lr penetrate about the same anywhere from 9-14" at 5 yards. The Maxi Mags definitely create a much larger wound channel though in the initial 4-7" than the Velocitor, and expand a little better as well which surprised me since they are flat nosed. I definitely didn't know what kind of damage the 22wmr could do until I saw it first hand from my tiny revolver. It is a nasty round. Not to take anything away from the 22lr though if you have some hot ammo. I have yet to try the Stinger or Mini Mag. I have had one FTE from the Velocitor on my G44(very picky gun that wants 1300fps+), so I might give a box of Stingers a try.
I do enjoy someone not knocking the efficacy of the .22, so great video. Thanks.
Good video, especially the ballistic gel....
Dang man you’ve got yourself in great shape. I need to follow suit. Good test BTW.
Don't feel too bad. You have me beat on cardio ;)
Very cool with good information. I have to wonder what the difference would be in a 4" barrel.
Probably more penetration, but if you are using hollow-points that open up, you might get less. It could be similar to 380 where some hollowpoints fail, but those that work work too well and don't penetrate enough.
Definitely MORE velocity shooting .22 Magnum in a 4" inch barrel and is a more reliable rimfire caliber !
Yeah, a 4” minimum barrel gets much better results from the 22WMR. But both benefit from the longer barrel. I used to have a little H&R double action,9 shot revolver in 22lr with a 4” barrel and it was a sweet shooter. Lousy sights but it would put them where you wanted them. I want a 22WMR revolver though!
9/14" gel depths equals roughly 36% penetration difference. Great video, thanks
Those wound channels don’t even look that much smaller than 9mm or .40 s&w lol holy crap
I will always choose the 22lr over the mag. Speed is not everything!!!
I always laugh at those who, with a straight face, try to convince us that out of a short barrel the 22lr is just as powerful as a 22 mag.
Nice, Concise presentation. 👍🏻
That blew my mind. Not much speed difference but double depth?
One has more powder. Does not/did not increase speed but made a longer trip-- think of it as fuel in your gas tank. At least with these barrel lengths.
I use the maxi-mag TNT in my 4" NAA. Out of a rifle, it's a highly explosive varmint round, but out of the pistol it expands about like a regular HP. Regular HP out of the pistol hardly expands at all.
I wonder how much it would go through.
@@professorpewpuew I haven't done any controlled testing, but it seems to kill varmints very adequately.
@@professorpewpuew With a 22 forget about expand. Use round nose bullet for penetration. On a small varmint needing 4 inches or less penetration any bullet type will do.
Dude that was the best video on the subject I've seen out of about 6.
I own the pug 1.5 inch barrel 22/22 mag inter change cylinder. I haven't tested to critically on penitration or velocity yet. But I've been through some 3 thousand shots with 22 LR and zero malfunction. Mabie 200 magnum rounds one single malfunction.
The downfall is the tumbling rounds.
Some do others don't. 30 yard plus shots get kinda questionable.
Great gun, easily one of the best 280$$ I ever spent.
I am somewhat surprised that the Pug would tumble bullets. I always criticized NAA Minis for coming from the factory without any crown on the muzzle end. But the Pug has a pretty pronounced crown. I did find that lighter 30 grain loads do help with the keyholing issue but I hope you find a 40 grain load it likes.
Impressive penetration out of that small barrel on the .22 mag
Bill Jordan wanted a .22 Mag backup gun in "No Second Place Winner" (page 77).
Interesting review. Thanks.
I've found that the Hornady Vmax 22mag were the most reliable so far. Haven't had a single one fail to fire yet out of 200 rounds. The CCI failed to fire once out of 200 rounds which is still really good for rimfire. Winchester fails to fire at least 5 times per box of 50 and that's being generous. The last box of winchester game point I shot had a total of 18 bullets that failed to fire which worried me to the point that I took my revolver to a gunsmith to make sure it wasn't the cause of the problem.
I have a brick of whitebox winchester .22lr. 0 misfires for over 100 rounds. Your gun must be dirty or the pin isn't hitting hard enough or in the correct spot.
What are you shooting thay from?
You are exaggerating. There is a very slight chance you got a mystical "bad batch" of ammo that I have yet to see in my entire life.
Man you need to use ammo that's specific designed for short barrel guns, Speer dot has some and Hornady
Been there and done that. The performance, as seen in other videos, isn't any better.
Most people will not have that so this test is realistic.
So does federal
A small piece of duct tape would’ve held the pants in place.
There are a lot of gangsta types that could also heed that advice!
I seen a guy shot 17 times with 22 rifle about 20 ft away got back in his car and drove several miles to hospital. The key to using 22 is shooting in the head. Out of 17 shoots not a single shot hit him in a vital area. I carry a little 22naa all the time in my pocket. But i know it would take a head shot to stop a man.
Agree...and in our case the bad guy shouldn't be more than 3-5 feet away...that is fearsomely too close, but with any luck maybe simply pulling the gun will adjust the problem, or slightly worse the 1st shot is a hit that changes the mind...I figure we are getting hopefully at least 2 shots (that is how we practice), and at point blank range the second has to a ear, nose, or throat shot...we love our NAA, but it is limited...of course, as revolver people even our larger calibers need careful aim initially at center mass, but those have a fraction more leeway...
So why hasn't anyone out there created a handgun load for .22 magnum?
Theres plenty of 22wmr pistols
I personally like 22 magnum but the revolver choices are limited . My favorite rim fire revolver is the smith and wesson model 63-5 and currently my most carried weapon . I'm kinda picky and the 63-5 offer's the most of what I like .
Well smith&wesson makes a semi auto 22 mag that holds 30 rounds with a standard mag it’s pretty crazy u should check it out
The derringer or a look alike in 22 mag would be an awesome side piece for hunting
Good demonstration !
I'd like to see this same test using copper (and/or brass) plated hollow points.
Coming to this one late, but so would I! I have the NAA .22 Magnum Mini as a backup to my Taurus PT111 G2 9mm. I have the combo that has cylinders for .22 Magnum (my usual load is CCI Maxi Mag 22 WMR HP) and .22 short/long/long rifle (currently CCI .22 LR hollow points). I would expect the hollow points to expend their energy quickly (as is the nature of hollow points) and reduce the risk of overpenetration. This is, of course, desirable as the most likely "Varmints" I'll encounter are the two-legged variety! 😠
Great video!
Another great video! Thanks! Hey, what ever happened to the Harbor Freight mini mill you bought years ago?
Nice job, nuff said.
i have the 22LR, its my back up gun. My primary edc is a P365 pocketed
I believe you did both the tests comparisons out of the 2.5" ? However, I would like to see this comparison done from "true" snubbies, i.e. 1.87". I see you have 1.87" guns at the end of the video, but would you please redo this test from those instead?
I'm doubtful that the 22 mag would outperform the lr out of true snubby 1.87.
I've seen a bunch of these lately, and your 2.5" barrel seems to be about the minimum that makes the WMR worthwhile.
Most of the available energy on those magnum rounds can't be developed in such short barrels. Make way more sense to simply go for a heavier round (if stopping power is whats needed)
Good concise video. Thanks
Try Velocitors in the 22lr and Hornady 45 grain FX optimized for short barrel. I would like to see what the 30 grain 22 mags do in a revolver.
I think the days of picking specific types of ammo to use are over, probably forever. A person needs to focus on choosing firearms that are effective with a wide variety of ammo. Imho.
22 mag 6 shot revolver is what I got along with many other calibers it's by far my most accurate gun out of all and that's crazy to say I know but it's smooth easy to handle and yes 30 grain cci hollow points work tremendously
We like the velocitors in our NAA, and gold dots in our .22wmr, although the Hornady is a fine 2nd choice...no .22lr will expand out of that short barrel, so penetration the game there (the federal punch ammo looks promising, but it 11gr lighter and we keep getting hung up over that)...the gold dots will expand, but I continue to wonder if the still small after expansion worth the effort...
see your 4 year old compared to this video and you have got more Man behind your eyes now.
Nice review!
Put the 22WMR through a minimum 4” barrel and it’s serious. But even the 22lr has killed a bunch of people. The IDF uses a suppressed Ruger 10-22 for urban sniping operations because of its effectiveness and lack of over penetration.
Excellent Video!!!
I carry a Sidewinder in my front pocket as a backup to my SR9c. I have the 1.5" barrel loaded with CCI WMR HP+V (labeled at 2200fps).
Great video, but what is the length of the barrel? I’m planning on buying a Heritage Rough Rider with a 6” Barrel
This one was a 2.5 inch barrel. I did shoot 22 Mag and LR out of a 5.5 inch barrel in another outing with about 1100 fps out of some 22 LR but 1400 out of some Magnums.
@@professorpewpuew Aw, Dude, you’re the best! I was doing research these past 30 minutes or so of 22mag velocity with a 6” barrel, and lo and behold, the closest thing to it! Thanks a million dude
@@professorpewpuew thats what I was wondering also. Thanks for the information!! Maybe a heritage in the next video?
We have never clocked our heritage (6.5 inch barrel), but we can feel the slight surge in power when firing .22wmr out of it...not an extra ton of power, but enough to be noticeable...we stage ours in the basement (laundry down there), loaded with Hornady...maybe not ideal, but we can't afford a bazooka in every room...
I got one 6 inch barrel the mag has about double the power and noise. Hey with mags it will take down coyote at about any range. But because the barrel has to fire the mag, it is not very accurate with 22. Mags are far more accurate than 22 out of it. A really accurate 22 can not use mags. But with mags you will love the gun.
Make whatever joke you want about me, but I love, LOVE pocket revolvers. S&W 442 for the win! I'll probably eventually pick up the 22, though. 8 shots!😊
Nice little pop gun.
nice vid I learned a lot
Awesome well made video
An excellent test. I have a pug, what’s the diff in the barrel length vs penetration and range etc?
Try the same test in 1.58 inch or the shorter barrell and use the velositor the 22 mag and high velosity 27 grain shorts
Thanks nice 👍 info 😊 speak 🗣️ clear good presentation
I ducked when he shot next to the camera 😂
I'm curious if you add the 22 short in the mix.

Hempseed, where the hell have you been? I was looking for your channel the other day.
All Outdoors Well, you know, laying low, hiding from the feds... ;-) I've gone behind the scenes, I edit another RUclips channel which is nearing 100k. It keeps me mighty busy. This 22 comparison is really helpful. I've been thinking about a small 22 revolver for kayak carry.
Simple, 22 Magnum is made for longer barrels.
So you couldn't shoot magnum out of a regular .22 gun could you?
thenks.bro
Very good vidio!!!....even in a short barrel the mag has a bit of an advantage !!!
Maybe enough to make the difference? I appreciate your input!
Which model is shown at 6:50? It looks like the cylinder isn't fully removed for reloading.

TESTING? .22lr Federal Punch vs 22 mag 4 inch barrel (semi autos) at 5 yds?
Thanks
Seems to me that the 22 mag is more susceptible to velocity drop dependant on barrel length than any other round. Imho.
Good observation, though some 22 Mags are certainly better than others. I have tested other 22 Mag loads, like those meant for short barrels and the velocities are a good bit higher. About the only thing that makes the 22 Mag better is that it has more velocity to start with and it can better afford the hit. Not ideal, but it could make the difference over a 22 LR solid.
Magnum = more powder more power
In stoping power the magnum is comparable to 380
Can you prove this with statistical evidence? You're opinion is based on nothing.
Either way you need the longer barrel. I have never understood the obsession with ultra short barreled NAA's.
The sight radius on them is extremely unforgiving at the best of times, and as you just demonstrated the velocity drop is horrendous. If you do find yourself up against a Cougar, or a rabid Coyote .22 WMR FMJ is definitely the way to go.
I'd take it as a given that it's likely to be a frontal shot through the ribs or skull.
Ditto against a two legged threat.
I had a few of those 1 inch Minis in the past. The lack of good sights is generally a problem but once you get around the blade, it is okay. My main problem with those super short barrels is that they keyhole bullets and they basically come out of the factory without a crown. All of the NAAs I have seen are like this, but the 2 inch+ models don't have those same problems.
@@professorpewpuew yeah for sure.. it’s pretty easy to crown a barrel yourself but you shouldn’t have to on a new gun .. cmon guys.
What is a crown?
It's all about concealability.
@@paulross9287 People that don't understand why these guns are loved don't understand the utility of them. Something to keep in your glove box, give to your girlfriend/wife, mom, or sister to keep in her purse or car, or just have an easily concealable gun on you if you need to break it out as undetected as possible. Would definitely go with .22 magnum over LR every day of the week, but these definitely can stop a potential rape or mugging easily

.22 is a good killer but a bad stopper. In an emergency if the threat of the gun is not enough (it usually is) to defuse the situation you will need a stopper not a killer.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of.....🤣
Sorry 😶. So why do you stand like that with one hand up on your chest like that? Your gun wasn't close to you, there was no danger of a snag or burn...wind on a mic maybe?
Putting your hand over your heart like that just give the bad guy an AIMING POINT THAT IN NO WAY CAN PROTECT YOUR HEART!
Lose this STUPIDITY FAST!
I highly doubt that's why he did it. It's probably to help with balance and to steady himself.
He...He was covering the mic? Most mics aren't able to handle the sound of gunshots.
This gun is stupid for personal defense regardless of anyone’s anecdotal experience. For trail use on snakes and other annoying creatures it’s awesome. But for personal defense this is just stupid.
All revolvers are stupid for self defense because of the drawback of so few shots per reload, loading them and for those without a swing unloading, a mag fed pistol in .22 has plenty of examples of it being used and working in self defense
