Excellent video, I have several J frames, my favorite grip are the original S&W combat grips, they were standard on the 3" Lady Smith Model 64, If you can find them I highly recommend them.
Indeed, my Dad's Model 60 purchased in 1996 came with the Uncle Mikes from the factory. Now that I have inherited his revolver, I was looking for grip options, but it looks like I will be keeping the originals on for a while! Very thorough and helpful video Cranky, thank you.
I carry the same gun model 36 3inch pined heavy barrel. Mine is a square butt and I’ve got pachmyr compact grips on it. It’s got a little finger extension at the bottom allowing for the right amount of purchase. You have a lot of nice grips though and nice video by the way.
Interesting video, I have a drawer full of grips . My go to grip for the 36 is a hogue wood mono grip. Maybe not quite symmetrical , it does fit my hand the best of all I've tried.
My 60-15, 3”, CAME with that Uncle Mikes grip. It felt perfect to me, right out of the box. I think it’s a perfect grip to carry with, and that’s exactly what I carry with 75% of the time. Once in a while I need to go really light and I end up with my Ruger LCP.
I have an old set of Herritts Shooting Ace grips w/a Tyler T on my J Frame. I sanded down the bottom for better pocket fit as well as sanding the top of left side for better speedloader fit. Works perfectly on both my 442 Pro & 340PD, and is pretty comfortable for a 100 round range session.
Yes I have them on some of my other guns. They’re usually pretty pricey, I was trying to find some rather inexpensive rubber or hard plastic ones, but altamont has amazing grips. Have them on a couple of my firearms
Not even close to the same amount in grips as the revolver, but I get your point. The good thing is, grips are easy to resell. And I got to try a ton so I know what I like and don’t like
If you're interested? I have an extra S&W original "Target" grip for J-frames that converts from round butt to square butt that I could send you. It's pretty close to the goldilocks size for me.
@@crankygunreviews Yup, whatever makes sense to you. Not sure how would be best to get in contact. I am also finicky about getting the right grip (for revolvers especially) and your videos were super helpful finding the right one for me :)
@@jrcouesdeerhunting6841 I have some for other guns, but I was trying to find something that wasn’t like $80 per set, and I wanted rubber. I had a falco boot grip with rubber and a wood insert but it didn’t have the extra finger notch, and it was so squishy it stuck on my clothes. The S&W one I ended up with is perfect to me.
I'm trying to find a replacement set for my Model 60 3". I don't like finger grooves. I tried putting my Model 36 wood grips on, and while I liked the feel, I noticed the grips were too short to cover the entire frame even though they're both J-Frame guns.
I haven’t looked for grips for a square butt in a long time- fewer options because just a standard wood grip is plenty usually. The extra size of the square butt makes up for the slim frame.
@crankygunreviews thanks for the video. I just bought some smith grips, the big ones. I strained my hand with the Altamont and want something that keeps the fingers all in a straight line. Thanks again for turning me onto them. Pretty awesome
I'm such a Hogue fanboy lol. What's weird about grips is you never know until you shoot them. Those fat LCR grips feel so wrong in the hand, then I shoot the gun and it shoots better than any other small gun. Just like exposed backstraps, like no way this will be comfortable, but in the end a lot of less felt recoil than the padded grips. There's just so much biomechanics involved depending on the specific person.
I completely agree with you. Takes time and buying a few to find what you’d like. Hogues are some of my favorites- most likely getting some for my Governor and 617 soon
Those model 60 grips suck, the plastic base you said was a positive is actually a negative, the rubber disconnects from it over time. And they usually don’t meet up symmetrically in the front. And the plastic holding the nut in cracks and the nut pulls out
I wasn’t adding bigger grips just for the range- I was choosing better grips for carry and ease of shooting. You’d have to watch part 1 to see my logic on changing them
I don’t think the S&W factory grips have part numbers- you have to Search for like “model 60 grips” or “model 63 grips” on eBay, that’s how I found mine
@@crankygunreviews Try the pachmayr diamond pro series grip. I have them on my 442.There is also the Pachmayr compac models which is made from the same material as the big Pachmayr grips you have but with the grooves. Those big ones are for K frames that is why they are too big for your J frame. I have the Pachmayer Professional gripper series on my model 66 K frame. It has an exposed backstrap and is slightly smaller than those full size grippers you have.
@@crankygunreviews I switched over all my SW revolvers from Hogue to Pachmary after I felt the difference of them on my 442. Softer rubber than the Hogue and wider more open finger grooves than the Hogue which pinched my finger plus the Pachmary has a better palm swell feel and trigger finger alignment. It makes it a smooth squeeze with less barrel movement on the trigger pull.
Great video; know what you mean. Inherited a 36-1. Stock wood grips tiny. Needed a symmetrical, solid fit and your videos did the trick !
Thanks! Glad my video helped!
I appreciate all this work on the grips!
Thanks man! Sometimes it takes someone buying a lot of stuff to help others :)
I think I'd personally alter your saying at the end a little bit differently if it were me. Freedom is not the greater good, it is the greatest good
I borrowed it from Buffalo’s outdoors. I understand your point, but I like it as it is :)

Grips must be small enough for a speed loader, sometimes the fancy wood grips can’t fit a speed loader
@@sosuapimp8449 I agree, but you can always use a BIANCHI speed strip instead

The uncle mikes grips are really good
I like the uncle mikes also. They came with my model 60-4 3inch barrel.
They’re well made, but I don’t think uncle mikes makes grips anymore. S&W makes most of theirs now

Love my Hogue on my GP100. Absorbs recoil and good control in hand🤙 Great video and separating the carry vs range gun
The Hogues are some great grips!
Wanna see different.... Redi-Load grisp and Ergo Delta grips. But I love compact professional Pachmayr grips.
Eww the ergo grips are horrible
A "T" Handle is an option with the slim wood grips. Pachmeyr or Hogue grips are good for rubber grips only that hogues can be big.
Yeah the Tyler T grips are nice
Ever heard of altamont grips? High quality. My 686 plus 3 inch deluxe came with rosewood combat grips and they feel good so far.

The model 60 ones pop up from time to time on eBay. Smith and Wesson still makes them, you may be able to email them and see if they sell them
Eagle Grips Secret Service made of hand carved Rosewood.
