Is The Smith & Wesson J Frame The Right Revolver For You?

  • The Smith and Wesson J-frame revolver reviews cover the gun's good, bad, and ugly. Unfortunately there are bad and ugly features to this gun.
It comes in 3 different frame which all have their unique set of features. We cover them all. The Airweight guns like the 442 and 642 have features like a reasonable weight, milled-in sights, and an affordable price point.
The scandium revolvers like the 340 and 360 are the lightest and have better sights. But they're also extremely expensive.
The stainless steel guns are the middle ground in price and they have sights options that are similar to all the other guns mentioned.

One of the best most honest reviews I’ve seen. My EDC is either a 442 Pro or 340PD w/the latter getting the most carry time. I’ve been carrying/shooting J Frames since my 1968 rookie year and an issued Colt DS (about the same size/weight as a J Frame) saved me in a 1974 gunfight w/armed robbery suspects.

Great review! Thank you! Your right about quality control. I had to send my Ruger SP 101 back because it did not rotate correctly and all I have is 5 rounds, that is bad! They fixed the problem after the hassle of sending it back and hopefully waiting to get it back safely. American companies really need to get their stuff together. I only buy Toyota, Mazda, or Nissan vehicles because every new or used American vehicle I owned had a major breakdown. All my foreign made vehicles have never broken down. I am a retired Marine and I love my country, but I am not going to waste my time and money on crap to include firearms!

I like the video. It is a very thorough presentation on the Js. I still have three; a 36, a 60 3-inch, and a 640, all in .38 Special. The one most accurate is the 36 with its knife blade front sight and the best factory trigger of the three. I like the idea of the 60 3-inch. It’s factory DAO, but not as smith as the 36 though it was made probably a couple of years later. Finally there’s the 640 which was used and abused when I got it, suffered additional wear and tear, and starting to need some attention. I’ve found the best grips for me so far have been the Bantams as they fill the palm better and the materials tend to soak up recoil and give better control. Plus they’re easier to conceal. I had an old 940 in 9mm but it wasn’t reliable. I’ve looked at 9mm conversions for the 640 but the gunsmiths all seem to discourage shooting +P. I think if S&W would offer the .327 Mag chambering in the alloy Js, they might become good sellers and increase availability of the ammo. Personally I’m starting to lean toward light weight revolvers in .22LR/Mag. I just don’t like the fact that the ones S&W offers retail for around $750. I’m considering Ruger and Charter options in those calibers. Anyway, I wish that 148 grain wadcutters and 158 grain semi wadcutters were available everywhere again like they used to be when I took stocks for granted.

Great video. I would invite anyone who is struggling with getting a proper grip on your J frame to revert back to the old school round butt wouldn't grips. It enables you to have a full-length grip with all the concealability. If you find that the old school round but wood grips are too small, then you need a K frame snub nose These are available in both round butt and square butt. For some reason in today's society, we want these tactical looking grips that are more about esthetics than practicality. Remember when it comes to gripping your pistol the majority of the power is generated by the smallest finger which is your pinky. If it's hanging off the bottom or only achieving 50% attachment, you are losing the majority of your grip strength ergo struggling to control your revolver. They figured this out a long time ago..

Roger that ! I have had to send 2 new revolvers in for repair the last year. One, a Rock Island Armory 38 snub nose revolver. It had a chamber out of time really bad. I did get it on sale for $179 at my local Academy. The other revolver was a new S&W 642. It had 2 chambers out of time. I also picked it up at Academy, in sale for $400. Both companies did quickly send me a prepaid shipping label, repaired the revolvers at no cost, and covered the return shipping. I had the RIA back in 3 weeks and the S&W in 2 weeks. There is no excuse for a revolver being sent out for sale to be out of time. Especially one that normally sells for $500+. Quality control is suffering horribly - no matter if it's an economy gun or a higher priced one. I also decided I wanted to pick up a new Ruger Wrangler last year. I got to Academy and they had one left in inventory. The guy handed it to me and I immediately noticed the cylinder did not turn like it should. It seemed to have a bur stopping it on one chamber. I showed the sales guy the issue and told him I wasn't going to mess with buying it just to have to send it back for repairs. He didn't seem to really give a sh#t and laid it back in the case for someone else to buy. Like you said, QC sucks anymore, several gun companies.

I have a 642. Its trigger was horrible out of the box. Fortunately, a trigger job and replacing the springs is easy enough to do, changing it from horrible to just meh. Overall, I much prefer the LCR, as they have infinitely better triggers and are mostly good to go out of the box. Short stroking the trigger on an LCR is a bigger problem than on the 642, but I think that is an easier training problem to work around than mastering the 642 trigger

Never had any of those issues with my model 60, also a j-frame revolver. So far, it has performed flawlessly and I've already fired maybe a couple hundred .357 magnum rounds through it. It helps that I cleaned and lubed it after each range session. Granted, the trigger pull is heavy, but that's to be expected in any revolver, I believe.

@@williamwatson4625After a little break in period, the J frame trigger becomes pretty nice once contact surfaces mate together and springs soften up a bit. The J frame also feels like a nicer revolver to “revolver guys” than the Ruger counterpart. The Ruger (a decent piece in its own right) just feels cheaper to revolver aficionados. The full size all steel Ruger revolvers (especially GP100) feel and perform fantastic…. But when it comes to the 5 shooters, the Smith is a more precision built piece which translates to better feel.

I own this revolver in a 642 I picked it up for summer cary ,but I can't go back to anything heavier. I got some tips on this gun after wearing it for over 5 years.
First: grips : Get a better set for this lil shooter. I put hogue mono-grip on and love it but any grip that covers the back strap and lets you use a speed loader EZer would work just as well.
Next finish : The paint or whatever S&W uses on the 642 can flake off ..You can cerakote it, but I polished mine. It is perty now. If you do polish yours black out the rear sight.
Be careful about making your guns look real nice....Your kids will steal them. my daughter has put dibbys on this one. I said for when? after I die...she said yea.
Rounds : I pack hornady crit def non +P in this j frame. I like them cause of the lighter recoil and less muzzle flash.
That being said I am not recoil sensitive but the recoil is wild on these
To finish, carry : A gat this light you don't carry, you wear it. I like a pocket holster but I could see hip carry and it disappearing just as ez

If you are going to paint your front sight lay down a layer of white paint prior to your color of choice. It makes the orange etc. pop and also seems to increase durability.
Further, as far as your reloads go, check out the Stressfire technique. It will facilitate spent rounds clearing the cyinder and significantly speed up your reloads. Finally the 351PD and 351c in 22 mag seem to be very reliable. 22 mag ammo seems to be more reliable than 22 LR so that may account for the difference?

I can vouch for the quality control and reliability dip from Smith & Wesson. I’m jumping through hoops with my performance center 10mm now. In my experience, my Ruger firearms have been much more reliable and if you do need something from them, their customer service is top notch. S&W customer service has been obtuse and disappointing.
It really is a shame that the race for ever-increasing profitability and growth has hindered their ability to consistently manufacture reliable firearms, especially models that have been around for decades and are worse now than they ever have been. I hope they will be able to turn it around soon like Ruger did with Marlin recently.

I carry a S&W 442 Performance Center daily and I love it! I might carry my Glock 19 from time to time, but it’s extremely rare anymore. Possibly if I’m going to a big city, a sketchy area, or far from home I’ll at least have the G19 in the car. But those times are few and far between for me. I’m going on 40, I have 3 kids, I’m married, and I’m usually home by 6:00 or 7:00. I don’t go to sketchy areas or big cities really ever. Carrying the G19 just isn’t practical at all! After a few hours it feels like a brick on my hip and I’m ready to chuck that thing back in the safe. I can carry my 442 with anything I wear and be comfortable. I know guys that leave their carry guns behind on any given day because it was too inconvenient to carry that day. Not to mention, if you think a 5-shot .38 isn’t good for average civilian defense you need to put the Xbox controller down and turn off the Call of Duty! How much decades worth of data is needed to see that the VAST majority of civilian defense shootings are within like 5-7 feet and over within 3-5 rounds? Yes, the world is more dangerous, but those situations still have a very low likelihood of happening unless you’re hanging around sketchy areas and sketchy people consistently. In that case you might want to rethink your life choices. My 442 is all I need 99.9% of the time around town and for my grocery shopping trips.

The two most important things are situational awareness and actually having a firearm on you. Cracks me up all you capacity guys will trash somebody carrying something like a j-frame, but are the same guys that will leave your “super cool tactical” higher capacity pistols behind because it was too inconvenient to carry on a certain day. I can literally carry that j-frame EVERYWHERE! And higher capacity means more weight too which makes a lot of people not consistently carry due to comfort and convenience. If I need much more than 5 rounds in a defensive situation I’m in a lot of trouble and probably need a rifle anyway. Okie dokie. First off, I own a 442 does not have any blemishes does not look like someone put together with a hammer so I'm not sure about that comment. Secondly, if you have a weapon that fits your hand, if you have a weapon that can point down range and if you have a weapon that can push out a projectile at very high rates and takes the bad guy to another level of existence, then you're in good shape. Practice practice practice. There's my little two cents for today. Take it or leave it. Hasta luego

Why are you shooting a Taurus revolver in a S&W video? Do your editors not know the difference?

Stock small grips with bare metal in contact with your hand "do a decent job" of taming recoil, but stock Taurus grips with 1/2 inch of rubber between the frame and your hand do not. OK.

I know it's counterintuitive, but it's true. With revolvers there's a lot of voodoo magic going on. The Taurus grips are brutal.

I’ve shot both a S&W Model 60 and Taurus 605 side by side on the same day with the same ammo.
The model 60 is a couple ounces lighter but it still didn’t feel as harsh as the Taurus did in recoil. I have no idea why, you need to experience it yourself to appreciate it.

If a small revolver isn’t made of stainless steel you’re wasting your money. This airweight 14 ounce revolvers do nothing but beat up your knuckles.

Trust me when I tell you you're not going to put this gun into athletic shorts and go for a run unless you want a heavy weight beating the s*** out of your kneecap and your leg the whole day not to mention the gun prints in athletic shorts, athletic shorts tend to be loose easily flowing material. Just put your telephone in your athletic shorts and run around and tell me if your telephone doesn't bounce around everywhere now imagine something about five times the weight.
