In this episode of book club we're looking at Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin which looks at how we can transform our relationship with money, work and our lives. It has been a best selling book for nearly 3 decades and in this video we look at a couple of the key themes including how we should define work, what is 'enough' and why we should equate money with life energy.

“Freedom is not achieved by satisfying desire, but by eliminating it.” True wealth lies in wanting less. “No person has the power to have everything they want,” Seneca says, “but it is in their power not to want what they don’t have, and to cheerfully put to good use what they do have.” Our goal should be to “seek riches, not from Fortune, but from ourselves.”

My mother (and stepdad by proxy) huge house, horses, new car each year, twice+ yearly big trips etc. Only to sit in front of the TV having her children maintain it all whilst they grew to 500lbs of misery. Kids move out, can't maintain the house, horses, etc. To save face they moved abroad (cheaper, smaller but 'exotic'. And still big tbh but maintainable and labour there is cheap.) Still growing more miserable by the day.
How she got the money? Married a rich guy and he passed away, left all money to his children, that she neglected which in my case turned into over a decade of surgeries and rehabilitation / being bed-bound. We could fight, now we're adults, to get full rights over the money that's technically already ours by how my father's will works. But I couldn't... how miserable would she be without the money, what can she still do to live without it? Luckily my brother agrees.
The money and the ease of it have numbed her to everything, her body aches too much from overeating and doing nothing to enjoy activities. They buy everything they even think they want as soon as they think of it. What can you even do to make people like that happy? It kills me seeing them so unhappy. :(

The point about spending money to impress peers is so true. I have been working from home since March 2020 and I have spent way less money on clothes than I usually would. It's as much to do with no feeling that I have to 'dress up' for work and wear something different every day as it is to do with not being influenced by what my colleagues are wearing. Just seeing heads on screen certainly helps with shoe envy!

The idea of money is bought with time was really well illustrated by the film "In Time", where people get paid (and pay for things) with time credits. (hit zero and you're dead) It really does change how you think of what you buy. I'd like to add, that your equation for determining hours worked for an iPad, doesn't account that the money is post tax. If the tax rate is 40%, you need to calculate the time based on 60% of your salary. I appreciate that you may have trying to keep the math simple. I find it helps if I think of an item at twice the listed price and ask myself if I still want it.

It’s so very true - it’s a mindset I’ve used for a few years. Before I make a purchase, I walk around for a bit imagining how much joy it really will bring as I’ve wasted so much money before on frivolous purchases that brought me...can you guess? Zero fulfilment. Great post & great book! 😁🙏🏼

I think age is a factor in that “enough” point. Assuming I don’t live beyond 100, I’m in the latter half of my life and you get to a place (at least I have) where you realize life was better before all the stuff and complexity it brings. It’s really past the point of enough - you actually re-define what is enough and want to reverse course.

I once worked as a supply teacher. The pay was average but it was done by day, and sometimes it was fun but most of the time it felt like a direct swap of time for money. I saved SO much money in that time because I was just so aware of what the price of something really meant - e.g. a takeaway on average was the equivalent of an hour of dealing with kids. Would I deal with kids for another hour in order to have a takeaway? Nope.

Man, I am just finding you in the internet space. Like you I am in the process of becoming a MD, interested in metalearning and Stoicism.
Why did I not find you before?!

Thank you Ali I always get at least one key takeaway from your videos (I also liked the term neccessaties and NICEessaties) I want you or other views to give some deeper examples of purchases written off as 'work expenses" you gave the examples of a watch/suit however I could see these as 'self investments' to help you manifest who you see your future identity as. I'd love to hear more insights on this the example I have in my mind is a new car - it enables you to commute farther for work and more reliably but also ties into your life values if trravel/road trips are important to you

Bloody hell, the first part of the video was depressing "making a dying" 😥I recently interviewed The Female Money Doctor and she recommended this too! I have to read it now

I suggest the book 'Affluenza' by Clive Hamilton and Richard Dennis. Blew my mind when I was a teenager laid up in bed recovering from burnout.
