    • RESOLVED - Lenovo Thin...
My Thinkpad P1 is freezing sporadically, requiring me to power off the computer by holding the power button for 5 seconds. This can happen any time from 2 minutes after booting the computer, to many hours after booting. After one freeze has occurred, it is common for another freeze to occur within minutes after hard-rebooting the computer.
Conditions which cause the machine the freeze:
    - I cannot find any similarity in the conditions under which the machine freezes. Programs running at the time vary, but have been completely different.
    - The laptop is typically sitting directly on our dining table plugged into the power when the freeze occurs, but it has happened whilst on my lap on the couch
    - The other day it froze when literally the only running program was Firefox, and today it froze with only Chrome, PuTTY, HWMonitor, Cmd prompt (nothing running) and Windows settings window open.
    - I have been getting a lot of freezes recently when the screen turns black after a period of inactivity. Note that there was no screensaver set, and the machine was configured to NOT go to sleep when plugged into power. Therefore the only thing that should occur after inactivity is the display going black / turning off, but the laptop should still be running. When I come back to the laptop to start using it again, I am unable to get it to respond to input.
    - CPU, memory and disk usage are normal / not unusually high
    Symptoms:
    - EXPERIENCE - The system all of a sudden stops responding to input from the keyboard, touchpad, trackpad or external mouse.
    - DISPLAY - Internal laptop display freezes with last image of the operating system and applications (there is no blue screen of death). It still looks like the computer is running, but it does not respond to input.
    - INPUT - Input from touchpad, trackpad, keyboard, external USB mouse do not exhibit any change to the display. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not exhibit any response. Pressing Fn+Esc does toggle the FnLock light on the Fn key, pressing Fn+Space does toggle the keyboard backlight - this is the only discernable response I can get from the computer.
    - FAN - Shortly after freezing, I often hear the fan spin up to a faster speed.
    - SOUND - There are initially no noises or beeping. But after a few seconds I sometimes here the fan ramp up to a higher speed.
    - NETWORK - If use another computer to constantly ping the laptop over WiFi, the ping stops working after the machine freezes.
    - TIME - Leaving the machine in this state for 10 minutes does not resolve the issue
    - LID - Closing the laptop lid for 20 seconds (on battery or on external power) does not cause the laptop to go to sleep (the red light on the lid does not begin to pulse), even though it is configured to sleep on lid close on battery. Upon re-opening the laptop lid it is immediately on the same frozen screen (it never changed).
    TEMPERATURE - See details below
    Previous Troubleshooting:
    - Installed latest Windows updates
    - Installed latest Lenovo Vantage updates (including BIOS - details below)
    - Ran another operating system from second SSD - experienced the same freezing. This problem is therefore not related to the operating system.
    - Full scan completed by Windows Defender - no viruses found
    - Full Lenovo diagnostic run - no errors found.
    - Monitor the machine temperature with CPUID HWMonitor:
CPU temperatures range from 43 - 84 degC
SSD temperatures range from 28 - 58 degC
GPU temp ranges from 42 - 65 degC
    - Leaving the machine in the BIOS for a few hours did not reveal the issue, but the issue did appear when running in a different operating system. Because the system was not being used much in BIOS mode (there is not much available to use), it may not have been pushed to experience the issue.
    - Disabled superfetch (has been renamed to SysMain in Windows 10 v1809) - the freeze has continued to occur since this was disabled.
    Operating System Details:
    - Windows 10 version: 1809
    - HyperV enabled, running a few VMs
    - Bitlocker full disk encryption enabled (software encryption with TPM plus password)
    BIOS details:
    - Serial number = R90P26RH, Machine Type = 20MD
    - UEFI Bios Version: N2EET37W (1.19)
    - Embedded Controller Version: N2EHT25W (1.10)
    - ME Firmware Version: 12.0.24.1314
    - Display - Graphics Device: Discrete Graphics
    - Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode: Disabled
    - Thunderbolt Support in Pre Boot Environment: Disabled
    - Memory Protection - Execution Prevention: Enabled
    - Virtualization Technology: Enabled
    - VT-d Feature: Enabled
    - Secure Boot: Disabled
    - Intel SGX Control: Software Controlled
    - Device Guard: Disabled
    - UEFI/Legacy Boot: UEFI Only
    - CSM Support: No
    - Boot Mode: Quick
    Hardware Configuration (changes from factory):
    - Addition SSD installed - Samsung 970 Pro 1Tb - Not configured in RAID - Used for second operating system, and is not in use at the time of the freezes

RESOLVED - I just wanted to report that I recently sent this laptop back to Lenovo for repair. Whilst it took 2 repair attempts, they ultimately replaced the system board (which I assume means the whole motherboard), and it is fixed. No more freezing - it’s a great laptop now!

@@SrikanthLukka The computer is crap. The default motherboard the computer comes with will freeze most likely. They replaced my motherboard too and it lasted me for 1.5 years. As of today, my laptop got a new motherboard that I replaced and I'm right back to the freezing.

@@SrikanthLukka Worse, the motherboard fried itself and a few minor components. I realized that I actually have a different laptop which is the Lenovo y700 gaming laptop. But I will never buy from them again as this $1000 laptop has cost me too much time and money.
Edit: to my knowledge there are two motherboards (maybe more) used by Lenovo. One is naturally defective which gives most people the freeze (priced at 175) and the other is the new standard which may or may not last long (priced at 300).
I know this because I replaced the new motherboard with the (new) cheaper one and it went right back to freezing at random points

It's been about 2 weeks since I commented and aside from the freezing keyboard the laptop has once again stop turning on due to a black screen. I solved the problem after digging a little bit. In general the freezing problem with no BSOD is caused by a hardware issue and particulary a memory ram. So in my thinkpad T14 the second memory (the removeble one) was faulty or it was a compatibility issue. My laptop has a soldered memory stick wich is pointed at 3200Mhz CL22 and the second stick (wich is removeble) was 2666Mhz CL 19. In theory it shouldn't be no problem but I ended by replacing 2666Mhz memory with a 3200Mhz CL22 oneand now all works as it should. Good luck and no freezeing thinkpads :)

I recently encountered the same problem on my Lenovo Thinkpad e590 (3 1/2 years old). As a first step, I verified that all pending software updates had been completed by running Lenovo vantage. The problem still continued, and in the next few days it became too severe. I noticed that the laptop would be functional in the morning for the first 45 minutes, but once I started working on some CPU intensive tasks, it became too vulnerable. At this point, just moving the laptop or even typing something would cause the "freeze" issue. I contacted Lenovo support and explained the issue, but since the laptop was not covered under an extended warranty, I did not get any useful information from them. They insisted on "reimagining" the machine with the Lenovo image as the first step in resolving the issue. However, I was convinced that it had nothing to do with the OS or drivers because the symptoms were more related to hardware.
Finally, I thought of doing some troubleshooting myself and realized it could be related to the heatsink/cooling system, though the fan seemed to be working as expected. Finally, with the help of some troubleshooting videos available on RUclips, I decided to open the laptop to have a look. After a couple of days of sustained effort, I found the root cause. I was convinced that a deteriorating layer of "thermal paste" was causing the issue. The thermal paste, I learned, is critical to maintaining an optimal temperature inside the unit. It is applied on top of the CPU and GPU to transfer heat between the heatsink and the motherboard. The most accurate information about this is available on the following page, provided by Intel.
    www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/gaming/resources/how-to-apply-thermal-paste.html#:~:text=Thermal%20Paste%20%2D%20A%20silvery%2Dgray,designed%20to%20dissipate%20that%20heat
To my luck, I found a decently rated thermal paste on Amazon for just A$5.88. www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09NJM6C1C?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I received the item from Amazon within a couple of days and applied it exactly the way it was recommended on the above Intel page. Now, It's been a few days since I applied the thermal paste, and the laptop is as smooth as it used to be earlier. Those two weeks were hell for me because the laptop would crash every 20 minutes. As of today, it is in perfect working order, and I'm not facing any problems with thermal throttling either.

One way to resolve (maybe I should say bypass) this problem is to hold down the ON/OFF bottom for around 3 seconds to turn the PC into sleep mode (don't hold the bottom too long then the PC would be turned off), and then press the ON/OFF bottom again and sign in. You will return to the screen where it was frozen.

I'm starting to get these issues on the p1 GEN 5 which is a year old. I purchased it for CAD & 3D work. Recently it keeps freezing on me mid use a few times a day. Mind you this was an $8,436 AUD investment for this machine because I wanted the Nvidia RTX A5500 GPU. I'm currently going through their tech support and I have outright asked for a refund. Luckily I paid for an additional 5 year warranty on this machine because a year to the date, it started playing up.

Holy shit I have the same issue. The entire machine freezes but mine displays some weird artifacts on the screen. Like flashing rectangular blocks. I've run through about 6 different nVidia display drivers and all the same issue. I think it was freezing more in the beginning before I wiped Windows and loaded a clean version. But it's still happening. Also just as you say, I can toggle on and off the backlight but the LED on the Caps Lock does not toggle on and off when this happens. Good call using ping to test for being alive. Did you find a fix or cause for this?

@@woodsb02 Ben I'm sorry I didn't see this. Have a look at my videos. There's 6 of then with the 6th one actually catching the freeze from a GoPro set to loop record. I've updated to the latest firmware but literally this is the exact same issue but I have an X1 Extreme Gen 2. I have tested the 64gb of ram I have added to the machine extensively and there's nothing wrong with it. The same thing happens with the backlit keyboard as what you're showing in the video. You can turn it on and off via the function key. However the LED on the CAPS Lock key will not work.
I understand that the P1 has a different processor but what are the exact specs for your machine?
What BIOS version are you using? (Right click start --> Run --> Type in "msinfo32" and hit enter). On the right side there should be a BIOS # Version / Date. That's what I'm looking for.
I see you're using Windows 10 from what I see but can you go to (start --> run --> Type in "winver") without the quotes and get me the version # of Windows along with the build number? I'm starting to thing this is a Windows / Driver issue.
Also can you go into device manager (right click start --> device manager --> display adapters) and get me the make and models of the two video cards your machine is equipped with? Possibly the Intel 630 and the nvidia GTX series? If you double click on each device (display adapter) in device manager it will bring up a dialog page telling you about the device. Could you get me the drivers version number and the driver date from the Drivers tab?
If your machine is working fine now I would like to know what drivers your GFX cards are running so I can test this out.
      Sincerely thanks in advance.

To everyone with this problem. I found what is causing the problem for my T450. The symptoms were just the same as in the video. The freeze is caused by a faulty key in the keyboard which is stuck in a loop I guess (constantly pressing). When I disconnected the keyboard from the motherboard and connected an external keyboard and mouse the problem was gone. Try it and see if you need a keyboard replacement. I was on chrome os and switched to linux to see if it fixes it because maybe i had compatobility issues because i manually installed chrome os on a laptop that wasn't certified, but it keeps freezing, must be hardware because chrome OS worked fine for around one year then slowly started this crap, went from one freeze a week to one freeze every 5 minutes... Does anyone have an idea what hardware that could be ? Ram stick or like one said keyboard stuff ? I don't think keyboard because i don't know how suddenly it can appear for no reason like that and that progressive installment of the problem which isn't compatible with the keyboard hypothesis, but ram on the other hand makes sense because it can get old and progressively old to the point the problem itself also becomes progressive.
