  • The LTD Bill Kelliher BK-600 Signature model got me in a Mastodon-y mood, so this week let's take a look at the Limited Edition Epiphone Brent Hinds Signature Flying V Custom from Epiphone. I usually don't even like Flying V-shaped guitars, but for this one I just had to make an exception.

    I didn't think that I'd like this guitar, but HINDSight is 20/20?
    For my European friends who have been asking, you can get the Hinds V here: www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_brent_hinds_flying_v.htm?ofid-1&affid=203

    I like all the riffs and stuff, but don't be afraid to clean it up

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад +6

      When I do these demos, I kind of just record what comes to me. Sometimes that comes with clean sections (like the H&K Tubemeister, or the Harley Benton DC-600 IV), sometimes it doesn't. I did actually try to come up with a clean section to test out these Hammer Claw pickups, but it sounded forced, I hated it, and ended up cutting it haha.

    Just bought this yesterday. I adore the hell out of this instrument. Easily the best guitar I have ever owned. The neck is substantial, but NOT in a negative way. I have little carny hands, and I still have good speed and reach on it. The pups are a bit dry, but nothing a good EQ and boost can't gloss up. Pinch harmonics come through nicely, and I love the dynamic response when I really dig in, and the string thru design gives it great resonance.
    Good riffs, and an awesome explanation, sir.

    I really like your channel... it's like Fluff's channel, but for real people. Affordable gear, your tunes sound like they were recorded by "one of us" using real, affordable gear. And you talk about real personal preferences, like body style and fret-board radius. Well done.

  • @Bjornsson09
    @Bjornsson09 7 лет назад +12

    Well done! I bought a BH flying V based on these factors: "It looks sick, sounds good playing through a peavey lunchbox, and it does pinched harmonics real nice." But you truly did the axe justice here, and if anyone asks me about it, I'm sending them to your video.

    I love that guitar and v guitars in general because when I play sitting down I put the guitar between my legs like you would when you play a v the only thing I don't like about this v and some flyingvs is that the strap button on the bottom is way to far back I prefer it further in so I can play standing up more comfortably

    That thing is gorgeous and evil looking. This pickups seem very clear and ballsy. I've always been a fan of the Lace stuff. Have you ever tried their Alumitones? Very very clean and clear pickups.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Nick! Thanks for dropping by. This is only the second time I've experienced the Lace stuff, and I found them harder than normal to record with, for this and the LTD BK-600. They are very, very ballsy, and that is a #YUGE understatement. More output than even Seymour Duncan Black Winters. They work with this guitar though, Epiphone have created an absolute monster.

  • @HearGear
    @HearGear 7 лет назад +2

    Great video.. i am not a fan of Flying V´s either but this one seem cool, i would more like a high end Epiphone than a low end Gibson these days...

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      A couple of days ago I would have said the same thing. Some of the studios I've played recently have been atrocious. Yesterday I was talking to the guys at Sam Ash, and apparently the 2017 Gibsons are MUCH better than the 2015/2016 models. I've yet to try them out for myself, but in the meantime there is no denying that these high-end Epiphones are some seriously good instruments

    • @HearGear
      @HearGear 7 лет назад

      I would much like to try a 2017 Gibson Les Paul out, maybe they are getting better now, but 2013-2016 have been not so good for sure, my Gibson Les Paul Custom 2015 model had some major work to it before it played good, and now we are talking a 5000 dollar guitar here.. so thats crazy... :S

    Agufish, I am a subscriber and watched a few of your videos and for this guitar you did not review enough of what it's capable of doing including cleans, killpot, electronics, individual pickups, etc. as you have done with other guitars. You tend to always compare to other guitars instead of focusing on that single instrument alone: they all have their advantages and disadvantages and that's what we want to hear. When dialing down pots in lower-end Epiphones and Gibsons right around five or so one looses volume considerably compared to higher end models and also the neck on this guitars are baseball bat chunky. What are your thoughts on those and electronics quality? I have been seating on the fence on whether to buy this guitar and somehow I haven't heard good reviews other than those stuck in metal trappings. I am sure this guitar is more versatile than that and I just don't see myself playing Mastodon exclusively. BTW, I own more than 15 guitars of all types and brands so this won't be my first guitar but may certainly be my first V. I don't see myself paying higher than $4K for a Custom Shop Gibson with tired electronics so this V sounds like a good option. Could you review Jackson's higher end Demmelition King V in one your future clips?

    Just scored one of these badboys and it's amazing. My only complaint is that I feel like Lace possibly came up with a cheaper version of the pickup to accommodate production. I'm getting a lot of feedback using the guitar and I know I should be using a noise gate playing higher gain or fuzz but my other guitars don't respond that way. I'd really like to know if these pickups are a cheaper version of his actual pickup. How was your experience with feedback? Was the guitar noisy for you at all? Thinking of upgrading to some Bareknuckle warpigs.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      Hmmm.. I had no problems at all with feedback. This is the first time I've played through Hammer Claws so I don't know what they normally sound like, but they sounded fine to me. I'm pretty sure they're the real deal, not a cheaper version. The bridge pickup has ridiculously high output compared to other pickups (18.3K!!), so that could be one thing, or you might have to check the wiring for problems.

    You're sitting with it wrong. Try wedging a flying v bwtween you legs, next time you get one, with the neck pointing up arouns 45 degrees in the classical position. I cant play any guitar except Vs and you cant stretch from the 12th to 20th fret on other guitars. i guess everyones entitled to their own opinion

    Actually im totally the Flying V guy, and I always wanted a Gibson Style V (without wasting money for a real one:P), so this one would be perfect for me. But Im not a big fan of signature models, since I dont feel like they are "my guitar" and dont represent myself as a player, they feel like they still are owned by the Artist. Though I like this one since it has a quite neutral finish anybody could have on his guitar, so im thinking about getting one, did you feel "Brent-Hinds-y" (lol) while playing it or does it feel like any other guitar?
    PS: Keep up the good work, i love your content :)

    • @thedriverman1217

      Georg Bilek You could always modify it as well. Then it would truely be yours, a custom Georg

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад +1

      Nah, as you said it's a pretty neutral finish, so it just felt like I was playing a good Flying V with a silverburst finish and super hot pickups. It's not like Synyster Gates' sig where it's unmistakably his guitar, and I'm with you on that, I don't like when I feel like I'm playing a guitar that blatantly belongs to someone else. The audience won't notice it's a signature model, but since this is Hinds' signature model with his signature pickups, and if you personally can't get over it, you can do what Derp Spoons said and modify it. You won't get as good a quality silverburst Flying V for the price.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      It's a little chunky, but it's not huge. I guess it all depends on perspective though. Compared to an Ibanez neck it's massive af, but compared to something like a Wylde Audio it's absolutely nothing. I would even say it's about the same, maybe a bit thinner compared to your standard Epi LP.

      @agufish  7 лет назад +1

      The last Epiphone Les Paul Standard I played (admittedly it was like an '07 model) had a surprisingly chunky neck that I noticed as soon as I started playing it. The Brent Hinds, on the other hand, I didn't really notice the neck being that chunky. Not exactly the most scientific method, but still...

      I assume they are A5 magnet pickups, Lace doesn't give any Info though. But they sure sound super clear and punchy, almost like a ceramic but with a smoother high end

    First, If you don't like flying V's you don't like the COOLEST guitar ever made……..
    Second, $800.00 is way to much for an import that will never increase in value.
    Third, flip the truss rod cover.
    Fourth, I'm gonna go buy one.

      BK-600. No question at all. Thinner neck, satin finish, extra jumbo frets and I am all about that classic Les Paul/Eclipse shape.

    I'm pretty new to playing I was wondering if the neck on this would be a hindrance for someone with smaller hands. 5 foot even so I don't have big mitts but I'm looking for my first V most brands are 25.5 scale necks and I already have to work hard at stretching across 5 frets. :o

      I'm 5'6 with small hands. I own a BH flying V (The one pictured here in this fantastic video.) Give it a chance. It is absolutely one of the finest instruments my little carny hands have touched.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад +2

      The guys at my local Sam Ash showed "Sammy" himself my channel. He loved it, so I tell them what y'all have asked for, and we try and make it happen. I also work directly with manufacturers to make content. It's actually one of the hardest parts of running the channel; reaching out to people and getting the gear for demos.

    I love the channel... but the review tones sound so much the same I hear your tone and not the tone of the guitar. It'd be great to hear a variety of tones, big open chords, and some single note runs. Like I said, the demos are great but they can be oh so much better.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад +2

      Duly noted. I kind of just record what naturally comes to me when I pick up the guitar, but I might try to incorporate more sounds into future demos.

      Please include guitar tuning? I like the paint job on the V, nice grey with black on the outside.
      Equally as important, I really like double-cut or totally open body types like the V is the ease of access to the upper frets for soloing. I'm moving away from single cut Les Paul type guitars for that reason. My hand is wide but my fingers aren't that long...

      It's definitely a blues guitar and rock n roll, but I also can't see it as a very metal guitar. Maybe some southern sludge.
