The Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter connector on my MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) gets worryingly hot when charging and under load. This could be caused by the Magsafe connector 2&4 pins being pressed down and not fully extended, thus not making full contact. Loose contact can cause arcing/sparking which generates heat to make Magsafe hot.

Hi There! Thanks for your video. I'm using my 2010 MacBookPro, and a borrowed MagSafe from another older version of the macbookpro. It's the actual adapter, and not the peg that gets burning hot. Do you think it may be the same problem, or am I using a wrong charger?

Hi there. Few things I want to understand.
Is it a magsafe 1 or 2 adapter?
Is it the same power output? Eg with my Magsafe 2 there are different power versions. Eg. like 45w or 85w.
The adapter does get quite hot too but just double check if it's a genuine adapter? Some counterfeit ones are very dangerous and could run too hot. If you search online for "fake magsafe 2 charger".
Thanks for the advise! At first I was sceptical, because my charger was so damn hot, I was sure there is some malfunction is going on. But after I cleaned the connector and the socket, everything got back to normal... I used ammonia instead of spirit. Both the connector and the socket now shine as new.

THANK YOU!!! Worked for me. Used a toothbrush I was given on an international flight, dipped it in a cap of alcohol and scrubbed both the charger port and the computer port (with the port facing the ground, so nothing would drip into the computer). Used a cotton swab to dry everything. Plugged the charger into the port and no more red hot connection.
Previously, I could hear the connection arc, which I originally thought was the hard drive. I took it in for inspection at the Apple store months ago and was handed by the manager to their "top genius," but he was unable to duplicate the problem. Seems to me there should have been a bulletin on this issue and he should have known about this, as it is a fire hazard.

While charging and working at the same time mcbook air 2017 as well as magsafe 2 and adapter heats up like hell.There is almost no dirts on ports.Still cleaned it and its heating up less now but only on charge.When working and charging the heat is excessive.Any explanation
Hello Adnan, if your ports are clean, pins are moving freely and no burnt marks. I wouldn't worry too much if it all looks good. Mine's still hot, but not as much compared to before, but it does get hot trying to charge from low power, under heavy load and driving the internal Mac screen plus external monitor
made my day. It was heating up and a cleaning helped . many thanks for sharing. Did not realise the pins go in.. that pushing in and out for few times.. did the trick. Also after the cleaning, when you try to pull the port it will take more force to pull it out. This means it is stuck properly and hence no heat loss and better charging...

thanks.. one question are all the pins at the same level. I see mine 1 and 5 are protruding more out..and 2,3 and 4 a little depressed. As it will still heating the adapter.. wanted to check the level of the pins. Than you.
Hi Sreekanth. I just checked mine. 1 and 5 do protrude more on mine too. Whereas the middle 3 are slightly recessed. I think it’s normal.

Hello Joe!! Such a wonderful video. Just received my macbook m2 air last week, but a few days ago I unexpectedly noticed that the magsafe charging head was showing a black substance and blackening the charging port on my macbook. Fortunately, the charging is still going smoothly. I tried the method you provided and it did recede a bit. I also went to Apple support and they said it doesn't matter as long as magsafe is still working normally. I'm now distressed and wonder if I can return this macbook since it is within the return period.
Hey - is it charred or dirt that's accumulate on the pins or the MacBook port. Normally it shouldn't really be like this. Personally, if I have some doubt I rather they replaced it, just to see if it makes a difference. Although there's warranty but doubt they would replace the port if there's no obvious issue affecting the machine. Therefore, I rather take a chance and see if another new machine will have the same issue?

Yes, still on a 2013, just cleaned the plug. I've had the overheating problem for a long time now. Even some pins burnt (the two on each side). It seems I could have cleaned these at least now and let's see what happens. Thanks!

Hey, really nice video! I've just known that the pins are loaded with spring from your video. However, I tried to clean it the way you did (with a plastic ruler) but the pin seem to get stuck in a deeper position, as if it's being held back by something (presumably gunk) or the springs are just busted. Do you have any idea how to pull them out into its original position again? ive tried using pincers but the ones i have are way too big for the pins lol. Id appreciate it if you have any other idea

@@ferdinand.bumpliz Yeah try a bit more hopefully it will get in there. Just a thought though, make sure you wait till it's dried out and stuff. probably not good idea to mix the rubbing alcohol with the electricity.

Awesome, tried some IPA and a toothbrush and this seemed to fix it.
Makes sense, if only part of the connectors are making contact it would be similar to running high current through a thin wire, it would heat up. If it's REALLY little contact, it could possibly generate enough heat to melt the cable or damage the connector permanently.

I was looking for this for a while. There are burnt marks both on the charger pins and magsafe connector in my MacBook Air. Should I replace both of these?
It’s easy enough to buy a new charger but I’m not sure there’s an easy way to change the charging port on your MacBook? 😕 try cleaning and pressing the pins in and out to see if that will give you a better connection? Is it charging OK?
Had the same issue, and actually it's not that difficult to replace the charging port. Search for "Magsafe 2 DC in-board replace", ifixit has great guides on how to do it. I have the same MBP as Joe, and got my spare DC in-board for around 20EUR.
Where did you manage to get the spare parts from?

Is it less hot after cleaning?
I've owned several MacBooks and this has proven to be a common problem. The magsafe port on first one got so hot that it literally melted parts of the connector. The others have had similar issues, although not to that extreme. Eventually I realized that cleaning the connector port is the equivalent of required maintenance on a MacBook. These get dirty and if not kept clean will create electrical resistance which causes the connections to heat up, causing more resistance and heat, etc., etc. It's basically a feedback loop that just keeps getting worse if not caught in time. Obviously, it's best to catch it before any damage is done, so keep an eye on the connectors and keep everything clean. If your charger pins get sticky and you can't get them working smoothly, replace the charger ASAP. Otherwise it will eventually do other damage. (Don't ask me how I know...)
Wise words. Absolutely agree. I have been using my MacBook for so many years. But never occurred to me that the plugs get that hot or could get stuck! Hence this video, hopefully can help others remedy this or best yet, proven it from happening in the first like you said.

Not possible. Unless like the newer Mac with USB C. Which model is your MacBook?

In that case, no. Only way is via the MagSafe connector unfortunately. There's no USB charging on these models.

Hi, that's bad. The only way is to replace the charger unfortunately if it's melted! That's dangerous.

Same issue, replaced my power adapter last year. Noticed the cable was yellowing near the MagSafe connection and the connection as well as the area near it on my 2014 MacBook were insanely hot. Cleaned up with isopropyl alcohol and what a difference. This is probably why I ended up with the dreaded logic board issue requiring the AppleThunderboltNHI.kext driver to be shut down with every update.

Just to clarify some things:
1. I have two MagSafe 85w adapters, one came with the MacBook when I purchased new and a second one from official Apple Store here in the UK.
2. After further testing, the connector is definitely WAY less hot now, even when charging and under heavy load (eg. editing this video). I can actually hold on to it for almost indefinitely, whereas before; simply unplugging it was almost too hot to hold for a few seconds.
There could many more other problems that might cause the connector to heat up, but this seems to have solved my problem. Thanks for watching. :)
i have been having issues with my cord being Yellow which is a hazard currently waiting on a new charger to come Macbooks seem to have the common issue with the outer wiring being yellow a lot.
Assuming it’s not yellowing from exposed to UV but actually being burnt. That is definitely bad.☹️

My MagSafe 2 connector just got super hot and would no longer light up or charge my mac. I unplugged it and exercised the pins and now it works!

I have a mid 2012 and it still works great the only issue I’ve had is it burns out charger connector every 8-9 months I’ve replaced both the chargers and the charging boards (internal charger connector laptop side) but it still happens it gets so hot that the power pins no longer spring back and make contact. I do use it everyday for many hrs I’m thinking it must be drawing a lot of current.
Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. That is very concerning. I wonder why it happens on your charger/logic board. I've been using my daily for 8-10 hours for the past 6-7 years also. Drive it hard often with external displays monitors and projectors with heavy applications. Often draw lots of power from the charger especially under load and charging at the same time.
Is it a magsafe 1 or 2 type charger on your Mac?

Thank you Joe. I have MACBOOK PRO mid 2014. It has not missed a beat and still going strong. I've had this problem since new with charger. Also boiling hot on the white box part of charger, (sorry dont know correct terminology). I often have it plugged into a new power board with 6 outlets. I't doesn't get as hot if I plug it into the wall socket directly, but still hot.

Mines pretty much plugged all the time too through extension power board like yourself. My charger itself isn’t burnt or overly hot. The white “box” casing. Only on the MagSafe plug itself when connected to the body of the MacBook.
As long as nothing is burnt on your plugs charger or the MacBook. I guess it’s OK that it does get hot. Only when it’s burnt that’s worrying.
I've cleaned it a bit as your suggestion. And I think now the temperature is not as hot as before. Thanks.

i have a bigger problem similar 1 pin is burnt and 2 pin holes are burnt can I do anything or just throw it away or go to a shop
You could try cleaning it like in the video. Are the pins stuck?
If the pins don’t move freely after cleaning
It’s likely you will need to buy a new one just to be safe
Especially if you have already noticed burn marks.

I have same problem what should i do my battery cycle is 1200 above so mi charger pin is overheated when its turn on and when i shutdown my mac and charge it doesn’t heat what should i do . I really need your help .please suggest me what should i do to fix it ????
Hi Nabin, over 1200 cycles? The battery is pretty much dead in this case. I've done less than 500 cycles, yet the battery only lasts around 2 or 3 hours max. When you say the pin is overheated, is it burnt? Its normal for it to get hotter when its being charged and used at the same time. As it requires more energy to power and charge at the same time. But generally if it's not overly hot or actually burn marks, it should be OK. Have you tried cleaning the pins / port and checked that they are fully extended to allow the best contact like in the video?

I have a LATE 2012 MacBook Pro with the "Service Battery" notification.....now, the charger gets SUPER 🔥 HOT, exactly like this video explained. I have all the tools and iFixIt Tutorial , but need to order the A1425 Battery (very challenging to find it). Concerns are:

JUST an UPDATE: Two of the pins are not cooperating...lol. They are severely stuck. I will look into getting another 60W MagSafe Charger and ordering the Battery (if I can only find a trusted A1425 Battery for MacBookPro Late 2012 13 Inch Retina....
Woah. Goodluck with the battery replacement. Mine says service required too but it still runs fairly well and most of the time I'm plugged in anyway. I might tackle the battery swap one day, but for now. I can't afford to break anything, so I won't risk it. Let me know how you get with it?

You're still using your late 2013 MacBook Pro, too? Like I said in another comment, for me it's still perfectly fine. The only thing which bothers me is the battery. I consider to get a change, despite the high price...
Yup still rocking it to this date. Same. Battery only lasts around 3 hours, web browsing and RUclips. That’s the only annoying thing.
And fan constantly on.
Probably dust build up or just modern websites 4K video and editing pushing the chip to the limit compared to earlier years.
Will try and hold out till M2 or M3 Laptops 😆

great tip. mine usually heats up after 5 minutes of plugging the charger and i can barely touch it which is why i charge it when it's off. btw, my charger is a 60W for a MBP RD (early 2015).
anywyay, cleaned the charging port and the T-connector (even the surrounding area) with the cotton swap. It seemed to have work. since i can press the T-connected with both my fingers without getting "burned". I was tempted to buy a new charger but had to do a search here and there for possible solutions/workaround and that's when i stumbled upon your video.
as a side note, i'm not sure if installing TG Pro also helped. I set the fan from "system" to "Auto Boost"..
Same here. After cleaning it’s still hot but not as bad as before it seems. Mines 85w. I guess it also depends if there’s heavy load and charging from flat.
just an update. Not sure why I never tried this. I used the same charger (MagSafe 2 60W) on an MBP RD 15", less than 10 minutes, the T-connector heated up and I can barely touch it for more than 1 minute which was the same on my MBP RD 13"
I also felt a slight static on the surface of my MBP RD when i was charging it so definitely something is wrong.
The MBP RD 15" charger has no issues (heatin gup) when I used it's original charger (MagSafe 2 60W) on my MBP RD 13". It does heat up but not like the other charger.
Culprit: Charger issue
I have tried using the MacBook Air charger before, it's slower but doesn't heat up. It's only when the connection isn't quite right, like mine here - that's when it gets super hot (for me) at least.
For the static issue, i bought an extension cable instead of using the head. It solved the static issue.
Yeah that weird static thing is present on mine and MacBook Air. Seems to be on all models. Only when charging plugged in.
My Mac book Pro was not charging. i bought a new charger and i thought at first it was the charger but still no sign of a light or life. After looking closely it looked like the pins had burnt out. Thank you so much, first it was hot yellowing wires, then a super hot charging head. I was confused because there was no obstruction in the connection, and the pins were barely burnt. After loosening the pins using a ruler, the charger is now noticeably cooler to touch. Thanks!

@@JoeLamOfficial Can relate, in the recent months I usually keep my mac plugged in. One day I drained the battery and charged it. And i was worrying why the charger head was so hot. I was wondering if it was just me not remembering after a while or it really was not normal. then i came across your video then *boom*. It worked, it is still warmer than it was new but at least it somewhat worked and made it less severe. :)

@@JoeLamOfficial Agree, in addition to that, the heat produced by the charger head should also be related to the use of the laptop, it's normal for it to get hot when doing something CPU intensive because high energy + high temperature of the laptop itself. And I guess it could be a bit less warm when it is in sleep mode.

I did follow your advice...helped on the connector where it gets attached to the computer, but the Magsafe power adaptor still gets hot.
Is it too hot to touch? It's normal for it to get a bit hotter when under load and charging the battery at the same time though. As long its' not burnt etc. It's within tolerance.
My Mac charger has burn circles around the power area where you specified ... going to clean it like you suggested and see what happens

Thank you for this! My macbook suddenly stopped charging. I did everthing. Cleaned the pins, reset SMC, even opened it and reset the battery. Was about ready to order new battery or charger. Lol. About the overheating..Will update my comment later. I thought all along its just normal for the connector to be very hot.

Can you link to a replacement cable (preferably USB C to magsafe for MacBook A1278)?
I don’t think there’s such a cable from USB C to MagSafe (Version 1). On my latest MacBook Pro M1 Max 16” or newer MacBook Air, Apple makes one for it but that’s MagSafe version 3. I don’t think anyone makes a USB C to the MagSafe since it’s a Apple standard.
@@JoeLamOfficial thank you for the update. After much searching, that is about what I found too. I did, however, find a short MagSafe (v1) plug with a female USB C end. I can plug that into a USB C cable to achieve near the same. Again, thank you for the information and the great video!

I was still using a 1998 MacBook until 2010, and it had been through a car wreck and had the screen completely detached except for one tiny wire connecting the keyboard.
Apple makes tough, long-lasting products, which is why I love them!
Completely forgot also I’m wearing an Apple Watch series 5, which i tend to forget I own because it’ functions so seamlessly.
Lucas Penick wow. 😮 I’ve been using Macs since 2010. Prior to that had iPods and iPhones. Haven’t updated my MacBook since 2013 ever since the keyboard and lack of RAM options. Both have finally been updated. But not a fan of the Touch Bar or the crazy high price tag. iPhone X user and again, since removing 3D Touch made me reluctant to upgrade. Might use it for years to come like my MacBook Pro 😕
Kudos to you as well. I have same mac since 6 years 👌🏾. But my ports and charger’s power pins are busted. I don’t know how to clean them safely as I really don’t wanna ruin my mac. It would be nice if you can show how clean the busted ones as well. Because your mac’s ports seems as good as new. Also make some more cleaning and maintenance video. 👌🏾

When you say busted pins? How bad is it? I’m not sure if there an easy way to fix it if it’s damaged. My method only works for dirt and grime to clean up.

Joe Lam I used your method and because of it. It’s charging now. So I can do little work daily. So thanks to you again. Both me power pins are having black outline still. After cleaning as well. It was so bad that the plastic housing on those pins also melted from ends.

There are burns on two of my pin, and it gets really hot when I plug in. Any help?
Hi there. Try pressing the pins in and make sure they spring back out. And clean them with alcohol to see if they make a good contact with the charging port. That’s what helped with my hot MagSafe plug.

Not on the MagSafe plug with the cable. Just make sure it’s not plugged in.
As long as you’re not soaking it with alcohol or water. It shouldn’t short anything. But be careful though. Or try pushing the pins in and out with a plastic tool first.

Had a MacBook through a year in Iraq. It finally went out after 9 years and was preforming great. In that time I did 0 repairs on it during that time. So they are absolutely worth the money.

Joe Lam of course. Had it all backed up because it was just getting so old. Plugged the external hd in and it was like I never lost my first one... except with less USB ports.

I had this same problem but I have an MacBook Pro 2015 15" cleaned the port with a little eucalyptus alcohol and it's fine now
Edit: my wife's magsafe had burnt out a few times, and I had cleaned it for her a few times. This time one of the spring-loaded power connectors would not spring back. There must be so much junk down inside it that it just won't come back. So I tried soldering a pin to it to pull it back out, which worked, but then it got stuck down there again. So I added more solder to the pin itself, so the height of it was raised to just below the other pins. Now it works well again (but for how long!).
I read that ground noise in the power can cause the power adaptor to switch off, so if you have that issue, apparently you can disconnect it for 60 seconds, and it will reset itself.

Great video. I've had to buy a replacement 85w MagSafe 2 Power Adapter last summer because the wires got more exposed. I was charging the MacBook Pro (mid 2015 year) next to the window on several hot summer days back then and I noticed that the rubber casing of the wire (if thats what its called?) started to change colour from white to yellow and eventually, several parts of the wires started to get exposed at an exponential rate. I read about these MagSafe 2 Power Adapters online and several people have been experiencing similar problems, regarding the quality of Apple's accessories. The computers are excellent, but I can't help but think that there's been a bit of cost-cutting with the accessories for Apple's computers.
Hi thanks for sharing your experience. I also didn't mention that I had to replace one of mine too since it just randomly went bang - literally. No sign of wear anything or any other previous signs. That's why I never even noticed that they get this hot or suspected any issue since the plug, cable and sleeve looked fine. It's definitely a lot cooler now the connector. 🤔

What was the main issue that caused the yellowing because I’m on my second MagSafe 2 charger and it’s yellowing now, I use a 2015 MacBook Pro retina and I’m on Mojave
I have the same computer as yours and am sick of this problem. I now need to purchase a third power adapter! It's disgusting.
Worked! A some point it must be that a build up of debris can lead to over heating. I was able to clean as instructed revealing the metallic shine of the connector points male/female and my Mac is restored. If I use a higher watt power adapter meant for the Pro on my Air, it does heat up a bit more, so I just won’t do that anymore. It’s possible this was always in the design, but since the machines are aged and still work well, won’t interchange MagSafes anymore.

I'm using a 2nd hand macbook pro mid-2009...recently, the tip of the charger heats up every time I charge it...I turned off the macbook while charging and it doesn't heat up anymore
Fairly normal for it to get extra hot when charging and using it at the same time as it draws more power overall.

Keep an eye for it. It’s normal for it to get quite hot but not if it’s burnt or yellowing any part or bulging etc.

So I don’t get it. What did you do with the pins exactly?? What does stuck pins even mean, and what does pushing in the pins mean?
There are springs fitted behind the pins to maintain a solid connection. When they become stuck, it can lead to overheating due to arcing and excessive heat generation. Therefore, cleaning and pushing them may help to loosen them up again. That's what I did with mine.
Sadly this didn’t work for me. My changer is fine and clean but it still gets burning hot.

Mine always cleaned not knowing stuck pin can lead to HOT issue...
If the pins are not making proper contact it can cause a short = more heat and hazard.

Hi Terry. It's OK if it's hot but not too hot to the point where the ports or pins have burnt marks on them. Therefore I think it's good to keep eye out. But yeah, mine is super hot too. I wonder if the new USB Type-C charging on newer MacBooks have this problem.

I even took it to the computer shop, they were insisting me to buy a new charger. I found tiny bits of paper and some dust. Thank you .. This helped.

A great hint, started to be insanely hot. Googled a bit and came across this video. It is unbelievable, that even despite it looks clean and shiny, there is heating, but once you use some alcohol, then no more. It is still pretty warm, but not crazy hot. Of course, if to consider how much power goes through these tiny pins, the heating is a part of design.
That's true, it's normal that they get hot but some people say their port is actually burnt etc which is not normal, especially when there's trap dirt?
I have a macbook from 2010. Still using it but its starting to really become obsolete.
I have literally had 6 chargers burn out from that one. I replaced the port in the computer myself. That meant removing everything including the mother board. Right now its working with no issues.
I recently got a 15inch macbook 2015 for free. The reason was the keyboard and trackpad would stop working sporadically. When this happened i would use a usb keyboard and mouse.
Solution: i installed Ubuntu. Now no issues with keyboard. Linux uses whatevery system is availble. There are two systems inside a mac. But the mac os is only able to access the one which breaks down. Linux seems to use the any or both im not sure. I was so surprised that it works now on a differnt os.
I cannot understand for the cost of a mac why these issues with hardware are so common
Wow 2010! I thought my 2013 machine that I'm typing on right now is old. I wonder if the MagSafe has anything to do with it - the fact that it fails quite often or has issues. The semi loose connection or quick disconnect causes shorts/heats perhaps? (I'm just speculating.)
The keyboard has been known to fail. A common issue with the butterfly design. I haven't heard much about the track pad failing however.

Try cleaning it and carefully monitor and see if it's still that hot? Best to replace it though if it's damaged. Bad connection, equal shorts, more risk of heat, burnt or fire.

@@JoeLamOfficial I did ,and Yeap it was actually really dirty I cleaned it with alcohol as you suggested, however is keep getting so hot from time to time , it's not all the time though. I have Mac Book Air 2013 and I only use it with OFFICE (word. PDF) and I teach via ZOOM so I don't think is because of any app.

@@yessicamunoz2061 it depends I guess. If it’s low on battery and using heavily, it tends to heat up more. It could also be a dusty fans. Less efficient in cooling. So even lighter tasks build up more heat. More power draw. More heat overall.
@@JoeLamOfficial sorry Joe it's me again yes i did what you suggested however after a couple of days I keep on experiencing issues when charging my laptop then on the screen the battery charge icon shows 100% charge in red and then suddenly turned off with no charge at all, OMG I have to continue pushing the charger towards the laptop and sometimes works I decided to buy a new charger so I hope that is the issue if not I am really going to die without my MAC OMG if you have any extra tip for that please meanwhile I get the new charger on April 22nd
Is the pin on the charger oK? Sounds strange about the 100% then cutting off. How old is the battery and how many cycles has it been through? Sounds bit like an issue with the battery? I’m just guessing here with limited info.

Try cleaning with alcohol perhaps if it’s dirty that’s gunked up. But then if it’s burnt or bent it might be stuck or swollen?
