CHEAPER THAN AN UBER! Manhattan to JFK with BLADE Helicopter!

  • I flew from Manhattan to JFK Airport in New York onboard a BLADE Helicopter, the Uber of the skies! It worked out cheaper than an Uber Black and took just 7 minutes, compared to the 90 minutes in rush hour traffic an Uber would have taken.

@@kateofone not gonna happen. Also keep in mind that a large portion of their clientele probably charter a private jet right there off that same general aviation ramp at JFK, and they certainly wouldn't want to be burdened by security. Additionally, even if it weren't for that, how do you propose the clear people through security somewhere else? The rules are that once cleared through security you must remain in a secure area of the airport. If you leave the secure area, you must be re-screened. The general aviation ramp isn't a secure area, so even if the passengers somehow cleared an official TSA screening at the heliport, they would still need to be re-screened at JFK.

TERRIBLE. Blade canceled our helicopter flight on 2 hours notice leaving us with the option to take one of their SUV’s for $200+ or book an uber for $100. I booked an Uber and Blade did not refund me, instead issuing a credit for future use (within 1 year) even though I told them I won’t be back in NYC within that timeframe. So they got $450 and I got nothing, apparently because my girlfriend didn’t buy cancellation insurance! So if you want the 5 min. helicopter ride, be prepared to spend $450 + the cost of insurance, so that’s about $250 a person when an Uber is $50/person. I will go with the latter in the future. Shame on Blade for having no empathy and keeping my money knowing I’ll not be able to use my credit.

This only works if you are starting near one of the heliports. The local media did a comparison where they had different people all start at the same point in Manhattan and head to jfk using various modes of transportation. The people who used Blade arrived like 2 to 3 minutes before the person who took the subway (which only costs several dollars). This combined with the limit on baggage makes it hard to justify this.

The flight hour on that bell is probably not much more than 500$ and it seems they can do about 4 trips during one hour. That makes out to 1800$/hr with discounts on a 50% load factor. The helipad probably costs 5000$/day though, so the margins definitely aren't great.

    Basic Environmental Impact Study:
3 separate UBER/LYFT cars each with 3 hour round trip drive times [drop off and return to original pickup area]
9 car hours versus 8 minutes in a helicopter.
Bell 407 burns about 6.6 gallons of Jet-A [Diesel] on that flight. Perhaps add a bit for approach/landing/holding.
The 3 cars would burn considerably more fuel to accomplish the same task. Every car removed from the road allows the traffic to flow faster and improves the overall efficiency.
This is the first time I could honestly say that a helicopter is more efficient than cars.

If you are a carry on only traveler, which is not a rarity, this can be both a time saver and a unique experience. In Vancouver BC Canada there is also a helicopter service from Vancouver to Victoria or Nanaimo or from the airport in Vancouver to Victoria. Less effected by winds than float planes. For any kind of light aircraft though you won't be taking big suitcases with you.

Subwaygirl NYC Take the A train to Howard Beach, then AirTrain to your terminal. You can also take the E, J, Z or LIRR to Jamaica and take the AirTrain or an MTA bus from there to your terminal. The A is the best bet from Brooklyn.

The title is a bit cheeky. It is cheaper than Uber Black under certain conditions, but not a yellow cab. If you have luggage that is bigger than an airline carry on, then the luggage is transported overland not in the Helicopter.
However, it is fabulous to do once no doubt.
I still use the Airtrain and the mainline train into Penn Station as my preferred method.

A NYC yellow cab has a fixed rate to JFK regardless of traffic. Should be around 70 with a tip. Real new yorkers would not put themselves in a situation where they have to travel from midtown to board a flight at JFK smack in the middle of rush hour. Other options include LIRR from midtown to JFK Airtrain for what, $15 total? Or taking the subway 8 stops into Queens (10 minutes) and taking an uber from there for $35 or so. Max.

  • @fidelcastro9579
