To fly is heavenly, to hover divine. Rotary wing aviation there is simply no substitute. I saw that view of Manhattan many times from the crew chief's door in an H-53 going from where I was stationed to Sikorsky in Connecticut. FLY NAVY!!!
I used to use the old SFO chopper flights from SFO airport, over to Oakland airport, flying low over the bay was cool, cheaper than a shuttle ride back to the East Bay. Then my last base, Dover AFB, I met a gal who was a ticket agent for SFO shuttle, lost her job when they shut down, she was one of our air traffic controllers on base, she loved it, got to tell officers where to go. We grew up a few years apart, just blocks away, but she went to our rival school.
Amazing the Eero Saarinen former terminal is lost amid the complexity of the current JFK. We landed in '66 there, with a brand new Caprice waiting for us at the front...A perk provided by the company Dad worked for in the (then) Pan Am building above Grand Central. There were helicopter shuttles from the roof of the (Met Life) building, until a skid broke, decapitating a passenger. This was resumed in the 90s (I think), briefly before another accident of some sort. Decades later, my mom still remarked about the spectacular thrill of flying by Manhattan on the way to JFK.
My first flight ever was when I was 5 going to Jamaica by PanAm. 1966. We flew from Newark Nj to JFK by helicopter! It was standard then I think free with ticket . Also direct flights by same company from top of Pan Am building midtown . Service ended after a crash on roof of Pan Am now Met Life building. A few years ago I saw a firefighting helo that looked familiar . I looked it up and was the same model as the NY helos still flying! Boeing 107. Turns out all the surviving units are near where I now work in Oregon !
Damn that was awesome. Have done that many times in the sim. Insight: didn't know you guys flew right over airliners. Always wondered what exactly goes on for approaches and takeoffs. I kind of assumed you used a short grass strip and taxied into your parking spot. Good to know. Primo (chef's kiss)!
I'll keep this little 7000 population around me, don't know about 8to 10 million folks running around, ( or why ? ). So many semi trips over the GW bridge told me NYC looks good from a distance.
Think of it this way: NYC is smaller than my hometown. My best friend lived 12 miles away and we went to the same elementary school. I’d ride my bike to his house all the time. But NYC is just 10 miles from Harlem to Battery Park. And they have better restaurants.
With a 20 min drive there, 20 mins at least in preflight, another 10 in start up and run up etc, then 5 mins and another 45 on the ground doing the post flight check list etc and shutdown. Combined with the costs, it makes little sense lol. :) But always fun haha.
A customer for this service already lives in Manhattan, they don't deal with flight ops, they just get in and out and they can afford it. $195 .Time is money so it's worth it
Visited there 8 yrs ago. Had the opportunity to ferry to Newark Liberty, didn't have the extra 450 dollars at the time. Had to take a shuttle van from La Guardia to Newark. Took an hour to go 11 miles lol.
Thank you for sharing your trip over to JFK Airport. Wow! That lower Manhattan area has changed since 9/11/ I remember always seeing World Trade Center 1 and 2 with the other buildings. It is different seeing that area from the sky. I had family member and friends who worked in World Trade Center area before 9/11/2001.
There is a bird that flies from that location to BDL. I would LOVE to just take a shadow flight on it! Leonardo AW139 or a Sikorsky S76. It's like a tease flying by everyday!
Speechless!! A fabulous treat like none that I ever saw before of lower Manhattan. What type helicopter was used? Now subscribed. Seeing this vid made my day...thank you!!
You need to learn when to go wide and when to zoom in. This was hard to watch because there was stuff going on that you were too tight in to catch. I kept trying to look around but you were focused on the ground too much and not where you were going.
So what flight simulator software is this???? Looks pretty damn cool but could use some work on the way light shines off the skyline, the reflections and shadows don't look all that real. Also NYC isn't nearly that "clean", even from the air lol.
It would be good to show the time it took from take-off to landing. In addition, mount two or three Go-Pro cameras in various spots instead of having the pilot to do jerky movements with the camera.
That was amazing OMG I can't believe how far simulators have come. That looks so realistic. And it must be a really fast computer. What graphics card are you using to render those graphics and the frame rates must be high!
@@MrPantss No was Blacklane car service. Cost around $160 if I remember. But we had been travelling for 6 weeks in the USA and we’re heading home to Sydney via Auckland from JFK without a break which is about 24 hours so thought we’d blow the bank on a bit of comfort getting to the airport. Not normally our style but was worth it in the end. Bread and water for meals for the following week 😁
Huge responsibility for flying in such dense airspace....respect!
I lived in NYC for 35 years and never had the pleasure of shuttling to JFK by air. Now I have. Thanks. That was great footage!
Great timing to see the A380 arrival! what a gift!
I think this video shows the true scale of Manhattan like so few others. Well done!
It gave me a new perspective on Brooklyn, as well.

A beautiful made video of this short trip over NY City. Rare to see the city from above
Glad you liked it!
When I saw this thumbnail I thought it was another flight sim posting... this is great.
Flew in the back of Army Heweys back in the 60's. Whole different world. Thanks for the ride.
There’s just something about helicopter flights. Thanks for sharing
Only for the helicopter part of the flight
this is the absolute most fun you can have sitting down! thank you for sharing
what a view
A 5-minute trip in just 9 minutes.
Must be New York minutes.
They took the scenic route

If you can get from Chelsea to JFK in 5 minutes you had better get The Guinness book involved and cash in on that fame.
I’d love to see you drive from the same starting point to JFK in 5 minutes 😂
I've never seen Brooklyn from the air like that. Those trees between the apartment buildings are beautiful.
Thanks for the tour!

Nice vid, and great catch of that 747-8BBJ. However you should say Manhattan to JFK (Queens). Both of which are in New York City. 😊
True - I'll correct it

when did they start putting BLADES on a helicopters?

for the landing fee and cost of fuel you could have rented a car and driver for a week
