- Little to no idle? Well check out how I fixed my super low stalling idle.
Long story here- I was waiting in a parking lot for my wife. When she was walking to the car I tried to fire up the car but it did not want to start. "It still had 12V"After jumping the car with some jumper cables it started right up. Next day I went to a local battery expert and they disconnected it to test it out. He told me it was the alternator not the battery. After reattaching the battery I started the car and the car just didn't know how to idle I was like great! No check engine light was on. So I had to drive all through town with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. By the time I had reached home the idle was fine. I had researched this all over the net and came across with an answer. Computer needs to "relearn" just drive it around for awhile freeway and city driving.
Thanks for watching Авто/Мото
I had this exact same problem with my Solara. You have no idea what stress you've just saved me. I really appreciate it!
Century Maine Thank you so much for checking out the video and awesome feed back.
Century Maine I have same problem but the idle still low when i drive for 5 to 6 mile and some help
Thanks for your videos, I ended up taking the intake off and cleaning where it attaches to the "egr"(not really sure what it is called) but it was filthy and it had a disc that I cleaned too. Idles great, went back to auto place had my alternator, starter, and new battery checked and all systems go!! (I was the one who commented on another video of yours about my tension bolt was broke on my arm) so thanks for all your advice!
Thanks for posting this video! I am hopeful that I can get my Camry to idle correctly by doing what you have done. I stupidly disconnected my battery & cleaned the terminals once I reconnected everything the car had very poor idling. Like you stated I can only drive it by using both gas & brake, so I`m keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks again...
As most say, thank you for posting. I changed my battery and then the low idle and stalling occurred. I had no idea about this problem before. This video was the first thing I saw when I did a search, it was a comfort to know I didn't have a major problem on my hands. I tried your steps but in the end I had to clean the throttle and viola. Peace.
Glad to have helped.
Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting.

Awesome! Thanks bro ima try that now. I already changed out alternator and battery and same. So now I’m going to clean the throttle
I have lowwww idle where it cuts off, I just replaced the battery, the scanner at the auto place read 13.5 off the alternator with my foot on the pedal at .8 rims with radio, lights, wipers, and Ac on full blast. I have this same car and drove 20 miles round trip back to auto place and still the car idles so low it cuts off. Any ideas
Hey man, this is good information! I didn't know the 2002 Camry could have this problem after disconnecting the battery. Thanks for sharing!! Cool video, the scenery was Nice!!
I got a 2002 Toyota Camry SE 4cyl and I also had this low idle problem and I replaced the battery it was ok. I am glad I saw your video because before I wasn't sure the a bad battery would cause low idle. Thanks
Works like a champ. have a2002 camry, starter went bad, had to remove the battery to get to it and same thing. Took me 10 miles to get the idle back to normal. Still went and cleaned the throttle body. Thanks for the info
Glad it helped. I made a video on the starter also.
Aloha and take care
so a bad battery can affect the way your car idles? Cuz my 99 jetta just hit a battery light and the idle is unsteady now.
Over 120K starting to breakdown. Making all the videos I can out of it.
Thanks for dropping in.
Aloha and take care
Awesome! Glad to here that it worked for you and congrats on saving a bunch of money by doing yourself.

Hello,
My car i20 battery was replaced with new battery. After that, on staring the rpm drops when idle. Everything (alternator, battery level etc were checked etc) is ok except the drop in rpm.
It has been 2 days now waiting for the rpm return to normal again and I have been driving long hours to restore the correct rpm.
Please help...I'm really disappointed with the new battery.
PS. Initially rpm was at just below 1x mark, after changing battery, the rpm drops to almost .5x.
I did this on a Toyota Corolla 2006 CE model and it worked like a charm, Thanks!!!
Thanks for checking it out and commenting!
Just had same problem on 03 camry . Drove about about 10 km roughly 6 miles and was back to normal . Ty for the video
Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

Thanks. This would have helped if i had looked it up a little sooner but I guess I fixed it accidentally as I was driving it on an 8 mile round trip anyway. I changed out the battery since it had a hairline crack and one of the terminals was changed out as well. It died at a red light at the first traffic light about .75 miles from my house. I got it restarted no problem but noticed it idled really low and just a bit higher with the AC on. Still seemed idle a teensy bit low on the way back but now it looks like it sits in P fine and D with my foot on the brake alright. Though I "fixed" it by accident did reassure me that my car should be fine later on.
2004 Camry
Much mahalos for the video rpm still low just gonna keep diving. But not in town like you. From kapolei to aiea and back. Thanks again.
+nathaniel taualai Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!

It's possible for your Jetta. It could also be a faulty Alternator. You might be able to get a free diagnoses from a auto parts store.
Thank you for watching
Big thanks! I freaked out after changing my battery
Great job man! You saved a bunch of money by doing it yourself.
Aloha
Sorry I'm not too sure. Check that the battery terminals are tight.
I would continue to drive at variable speeds under different conditions.
I really hope you find out the problem.
A million thank yous! I was about to have a heart attack and this worked!
Danelle Lewis Thank you so much for your kind words.
Glad it could help you.
Aloha and take care
That'll be only $250.
I should really be thanking you for your hard work and thanks for posting your results. This should help others.
Aloha and great job doing it yourself.
Thank you so much! Just a short video but to the point.
Thank you so much for watching.

Thanks for the vid and all the comments from the users. I have a 2006 2.4L with 137k miles. Battery(2nd one so far) died on spring break vacation. After changing, I did notice it was idling 500-750...barely maintaining idle. I thought it was because we were up at 4k feet altitude and maybe bad gas. Then I did some changed the thermostat this weekend for safe measure and disconnected the battery. It was idling too low, and I thought WTH... so good to know why now! Good comments I should clean the Throttle body and MAP sensor...next round of maintenance.
SDzoom Awesome! Glad this is helping so many.Aloha and take care
My 2002 Camry LE with the 2.4L 2AZ-FE did this on battery changes and for the last few months idled terribly (300-500 RPM, near stalls, surging) until I cleaned my MAF sensor with CRC MAF sensor cleaner and also what I could with the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, neither of which had been cleaned on a 135K mile car. The car immediately ran better on the first start and has been runnin perfectly ever since, RPM at idle is now at or just under the tick mark under 1000 RPM, and the engine jumps to ~2200 RPM momentarily when started on a hot day.
Jstn7477 Thank you so much for your input. That reminds me that I have to do the same.
Aloha and take care.
Had the same issue, used the cruise control to set idle then turned it off worked great
- [x] Toyota idle relearn::
1-turn Key on and Off 2 times ( leave in On)
2-Engage Parking Brake
3-Start Engine
4-Put in Drive-with Parking engaged-and brakes on-idle for 2 min ((( you will see RPM slowly Goes Up from 200 to 400 RPM )))
Bro you're a god. Easier than driving around
Will this work for any toyota cars?
In number 4 do you mean to hold the regular brakes as well or only the parking brake
@@kelsoistired parking brake and brakes
Sounds like a plan. Just need to scrape up some funds for some throttle body cleaner.
Thank you for watching.
Aloha
Haha. I just went through this when my "TRAC OFF" and "VSC" lights came on. Disconnected the "+" battery terminal long enough to check the air pressure in all 4 tires. Reconnected the cable and fired the car up. No idle. Proceeded to clean the throttle plate and throttle body. Car fired right up and idled like a champ. Easy Peasy. Two clamps and two vacuum hoses to remove the air intake silencer is all it takes to get to the throttle body. Vroom vroom. On the road again. lol
Thanks for the input.
Aloha
As the guy said the computer has to relearn the idle pattern because when you put a new battery in the computer resets the idle pattern back to the factory settings so need again drive it a while in the city and highway to get back to the original idle settings.
Changed the battery and would not idle correctly for 4 days until.....I removed all tubing & hoses leading to the throttle body, carefully. I then cleaned throttle body & plates with throttle body cleaner. Reconnect and started and idled perfectly, just like new!
Awesome job!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Aloha and take care
My Camry does this allot. I thought it was the battery but really I used cataclean and before I drove it I used a hammer to lightly tap all over the car then took it around town in lower gear now it idles perfectly and I got better throttle response.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Aloha
Make 2004 Camry XLE does the same thing I thought it was the fuel pump. But why does it do that when I disconnect the battery??? I was going to bring it in to Toyota to have them look at it but am afraid they where going to sell me bull crap or any car dealership would do that.
Because your car needs a tuneup. The cars computer changes the fuel mixture to compensate over the years. Then when you disconnect batter the computer resets and is back to factory. And because car needs a tuneup and cleaning it runs like crap.
Yep, just keep driving it around and the problem should get solved. My Mom's 2003 Camry just got a new battery and it has around 170,000 miles. It took about 30 miles in various types of driving and turning the AC on and off. Never cleaned the throttle body and oil leaks a little but these things just keep chugging away.
Thanks for the help it worked
Kevin Anderson Glad it helped you.

Did you have the same problem? Is this the same vehicle? Was the idle low before changing the battery?
Yea
I had that same problem when I had disconnected the terminal to replace my spark plugs.
thank you soo much it work.. best feeling
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Aloha and take care
I need help my 2003 camry Xle had my battery replaced and now the car won't go above 40 any ideas
That is weird, can't go above 40MPH?
Could it before?
If you had your battery installed at a shop please go back.
Not sure why it would do that from a battery change.
Sell it
Did you had a problem when the brake pedal shakes at idle?
Sorry I have not had that problem.
I changed my battery, and cleaned the throttle body, and that totally fixed the idle issues. However the check engine light came on after we fired the car back up. Is this normal? We reset the light and it is off now, but I'm wondering if it will come back on??
Sorry for the delay. It is possible that the Computer has to relearn from dirty to clean. Time will tell.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Resetting the light does nothing other than make you feel good. The computer wasn't mistaken, something was unplugged after cleaning the throttle body or you have additional problems. You need someone with a code reader to find out why the light is going off. Its free at stores like Autozone
did you had the code p1684? how did you reset the code to go away? I have the same problem.
I just changed the radiator in my 2002 Toyota Camry and after that my idle was really low. I had to remove the battery and the air filter box. Do you think that was normal for these camrys?
Yes I think it is normal for low Idle after you have removed the battery cable. I just replace my starter and have run into this problem again. Drove 28 miles and it went back to normal. It's best to drive on the freeway.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Aloha
iworkforbudlight Oh good. How many miles on your camry? has it been reliable?
iworkforbudlight it's called ecu relearn .
Thank you so much!
Aloha Brother !!!
Yet Another great Video !!!
I had No Clue , that you had to do a Idle Relearn !!!
To Cool !!!
Thank you for the Video !!!
How can I do a instrument cluster self check on a 1997 Toyota Camry
I'm sorry I am not sure how to do a self check on an instrument cluster other than turning on the ignition and watching all the lights turn on.
My dad had a 2007 Camry with a 2.4 L waterpump and alternator both had to be replaced at once actually very unsastifying out of the car with just a little over a 120 K miles expected more out of a toyota as with how our previous ones did. It idled bad for a while after the dealership put those parts on new where the battery was disconnected. It took it one day driving to work and back and time he come home the idle was fine again.
Been driving for 15 miles mine is still week
My mom's has 210k miles on hers. I'm surprised she hasn't had much problems other than the a/c and check engine light.
Wow, built to last!
Thanks for checking out this video.
Aloha and take care
Thanks much.
I changed my alternator recently and battery a while back and my rpm was low when driving yesterday like it felt like was about to shut off but didn’t . Car was in park and idling like that’s also
How did you fix this ?? I have same problem did the same thing as you
@@pono321 I had to ask my co worker to relearn the idle
it works thanks
Awesome, glad it did.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have this problem too but it won't reset. Still idles down to the point of dying almost. I've driven it close to a hundred miles since swapping batteries with another car.
Could it be the swapped battery isn't big enough? It starts fine and runs normal but it's scary at stop lights and stop sign
+Dwayne Robinson That's really weird. Check if you can if you have replaced it with the correct type. If it started it should have reset already.
Was this a problem before or after you changed the battery?
Check to see if the terminals are clean.
Some people also need to clean the throttle body.
iworkforbudlight
The terminals do need cleaned but they are as clean as I can get them with what I have on hand.
I know it's not the right battery for the car BUT it starts it fine and it runs great but when you slow down or stop it drops to 200 rpm and eventually dies.
I put the old battery back on it today and tried the trick mentioned in the comments about idling it for 15 minutes in park and for 15 minutes in drive with the brake on.
Still doing it.
I may have to clean the throttle body but I am not a mechanic nor mechanically inclined. Lol
Thanks for your reply.
This is truly frustrating as this is our second car to flunk out in as many weeks and I just don't know what to do since I work an hour from home. Lol and ugh
iworkforbudlight
No it's only been a problem since changing batteries. The battery that was on it will barely start it. To the point that the clock resets itself. So I figured a new/different battery was what it needed.
+Dwayne Robinson Quick question, is the Check Engine light on?
iworkforbudlight
No it is not on.
yeah, the idel is always low for these cars... dunno why. and Also it takes forever to "Re-learn" the throttle mapping and all the other computer checks..
Also my idle has always been on the low side, not where you are showing it should be, it was never there.
Hi.. is that the normal temperature?
Yes, thanks for watching and commenting.
No problemo bro and thanks for the video
***** pull off the intake hose and clean the throttle body! takes 10 minutes! *****
have someone turn the key to the on position and hold the throttle pedal to the floor and this will make cleaning the TB much faster!
install intake hose.
done!
*.8rpms I am going to bring it to shop if I can't figure something out. I have no engine lights on....so idk
yeah I have read that my,camry has a ECM and that it needs to be reset
It resets by itself. Just drive for 2 days.
Clean air flow sensor and the idle will return to normal
You can fix this by driving around and starting in low gear and working your way to overdrive on
My 2003 had this problem
I had no idea before. I was getting all frustrated.
I hope this helps some people out because I haven't found any videos on this.
Thank you for watching.
Aloha
You can avoid this by changing the battery with the engine running. As eell uou dont loose and memory functions in the car...radio, seats etc.
The correct way to fix problem after replacing battery on a high mileage Camry is to pull intake hose off and clean with tooth brush and carburetor cleaner. Be sure to clean inside the throttle body bire and throttle plate as far as you can reach. It will require you to have battery hooked up while somebody sits inside with gas peddle depressed all the way. The reason for this is once battery is disconnected, the computer then resets itself to factory settings and as the miles are driven, the computer adjusts itself for wear and tear and grime built up so it all works as it should, until you disconnect battery and it goes back to day one, brand new! As long as you get the throttle body cleaned out the newly reset computer will be adjusted to family parameters and everything is fine. 👍
The learned value for idle has been lost with battery disconnect. The throttle plate in throttle body is dirty and wont allow air to flow through The learned idle value was bumped up to keep car running by holding throttle plate slightly open. Now its not Remove intake boot. Soak a tough rag with solvent. (Gas, brake spray, throttle body cleaner.) Use an old toothbrush to scrub. Key on engine off hold gas pedal all the way down with something. DONT START CAR. This will hold plate open while you clean the bore and lip of plate
Dustin Joints
Thank you so much for your knowledge.
Aloha and take care
The best thing to do is to actually clean out your throttle body. Yes the computer will eventually prevent the car from stalling, but your throttle body is still probably dirty
most toyota do this. I have the same camry and 04 sienna they both did this. you have to get on the freeway
+raekwonyaeyo Yeah, I was trying to go to work for the miles and fortunately I don't stay on the free way long enough.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Aloha tower!?
It s because the computer has to go through relearn after losing power
By the way, it's a 2003 v6 Camry.
Cool
I learned this trick from a Toyota Mechanic on Toyota forum. (2002 to 2006 Camry). I installed a new battery, start it and NO idle.
Solution.
1. Pull your hand brake. (Hand brake on)
2. Start the engine and step on the gas steady around 800 RPM. (with your right foot)
3. In 15 minutes, do all these at the same time. Step on the brake pedal (with your
left foot), put the shift gear knob on DRIVE (D) with the RPM steady at 800 RPM.
Do not let the idle go low, it should be steady at 800 RPM for around 15 minutes..
Car will not move because of the hand brake on and left foot stepping on brake pedal.
After 15 minutes, idle is back to normal which is 700 to 800 RPM. To the others who does not know 800 RPM. That is the line before 1 on the RPM... 1 represents 1000 Revolutions per minute (RPM).
No need to open the throttle body.
Dan L This trick works perfectly! My Camry has 287K miles, and each time I replaced the battery I did this and it worked like a charm!
Dan L thanks Dan
How in the world do o keep my foot that steady for that long?
@@millylamp362 😂😂
Dan L I’m laughing at all the people who thought the “8” on their tachometer meant 800. 15 minutes probably melted their engines down. 😂
remove ECTS and EFI fuse for 5 min. Replace fuses and start vehicle. Drive for 5 mins.
Excellent input
I thumbed it
There should be no change after disconnecting the battery. If there is, the engine needs some type of maintenance like plugs, throttle body cleaning, etc.
Too much work for a modern car. U should be able to change ur battery and be good to go. Toyota u need to address this contrived, poorly engineered process. Just store the parameters on the computer. Silly.
What you did to fix it? You did nothing. The car adjusted itself. You did nothing.
