I am replacing the starter on my 2004 Silverado 3500 Duramax which has 350K miles. Yesterday I replaced the water pump which was a joy in its self. I appreciate your insight into how to best remove the starter.
Sir thank you for taking the time to show tus how to do it. I’m really handy with a wrench but like to watch videos for a few mins just avoid missing a step on something a I haven’t done before. Starters are pretty straight forward but thanks for the tip on the exhaust taking it off thank you!!!
Terrific. No gabbing about your anty's dog and where you had to put the toolbox. It was very informative and straight to the point. Hat is off to you chum and I'll subscribe just because of that.
I fucking love you doing a starter job soon and when I found it from under the truck my heart broke seeing all the shit that was in the way, this method will make my life alot easiern
Best tutorial ever on RUclips keep it up I have a 2007 Duramax with Allison transmission and I’m trying to replace a starter after 360,000 km thanks keep up the good work
Just checked your video out for confirmation on the 08 duramax I'm about to change a starter on. I'm a ford guy, you dont have to take the tire off and remove the fender well or drop the exauhst on those. The 2 ft extension does come into play though. Thanks for the post.
Well it is difficult, but the bottom bolt comes out easily with a box end wrench from the bottom to loosen then a 1/4 ratchet with a 15mm socket. remove the v clamp and use a ratchet strap to pull the exhaust towards the frame and back. don't remove the wheel and liner.
I pulled the starter out of my ‘01 from underneath. Disconnecting the transmission cooler lines gives just enough clearance to come down. Very minimal fluid loss, did not have to add any transmission fluid.
Did I miss the part showing the actual removal of the starter? Gotta love the, remove these bolts videos, less demonstrating the most difficult part of the job.
I gotta do a starter on a 2012 duramax. Hopefully it's about the same. I've read online that you have to also take the motor mounts out on one side, and lift the engine, hopefully that's not the case
You can absolutely wiggle the starter out of the front of the engine pull the power wire out of the way and then remove the starter upside down did one 2 hours ago and no need to drop exhaust either will need a long extension for bottom bolt other than that easy peasy
So, you're saying there's NO CHANCE anyone's getting that out in their home garage :) Note to self: buy a Ram. This is a good video - especially where the batteries are concerned - I know of 1 instance a while ago where the mechanic only disconnected 1 battery, & set off a shower of sparks when he went to disconnect the cable from the starter. It was startling, to say the least.
You can get that bottom bolt out with a wrench no problem you just leave the top bolt tight break the bottom one loose run it out by hand and then remove the top one last it's not as hard as people make it out to be
It's all pretty self explanatory except how to get it out from the vehicle. It doesn't just "drop right out". I've had to jack up the right side of the motor to get the clearance otherwise it was just wedged between the bell housing and the frame. Would've been nice to see how you actually removed it from the vehicle workout the 3 minute explanation about a freaking exhaust clamp
Why waste the time showing people the hole where the starter was and show how you actually got it out? You don't even show it going back in. Spend useless time explaining a wiggens clamp. Not very informative.
Man I really appreciate this video even this many years later!
thanks for taking the time to post this, it helps.

Thanks, the tip on loosening the exhaust and using a long extension for that hard to reach bolt where very helpful!
Thank you for the video. I just changed my starter in a sketchy Seattle parking lot after work
Great video. Perfect to watch before you start. 👍🏻

Thank you, Huge help!
Thank you for the video.
Good video, all except 1 thing. 12 dc voltage will not shock you. It will arch, however, it and may explode the battery if grounded too long.

Where is the star of the show that garage pup Stella? Always expect to see her first! Thank you for the videos!
she must've been sleeping
Thanks a lot!!😊
Getting ready to do my 06 with original starter and 370,000 miles!
Wow. American Quality right there !!!
appreciate it brother

I have a 2011 and way to tight still to remove with the muffle flang separated
Thanx !
Did you have to shim, or were you able to shim the starter at all with the tight location? Don't own a duramax, just curious over here.
Nope no shims needed. It's a new style gear reduction starter that's very shallow.
Thank you
Thanks
put a new starter in my 2007 duramax now i have a grinding upon startup any suggestions
Shim
How did u get a fifteen mm in there
you did not show how difficult it was to remove or replace the starter. I wonder just discounting the exhaust was enough ?
No help on the removal
Yep don't forget to disconnect the battery or old sparky will get you 😀
Maybe a weird question but can you make a video off all your cars you own from the first car till now
Thanks from the Netherlands
Oh wow. That is a tough request I will see what I can do though. Good video idea

It’s a simple DIY job if you are skilled and have a decent set of tools. A RAM….. POS Chrysler nightmare. No thanks!
That is one of the first Duramaxes. Not a whole lot of them left
thanks appreciate it my truck has 249900 miles need to do it not fun
Darn it lol was trying to figure away of doing it without taking the exhaust off.

Yo me metí x debajo I salió bien facil
You must be in the south or southwest... obvious by the lack of nightmare level rust everywhere.

Can you start making video’s please
Thanx. BTW Oreilly starters suck.. Second one in 9 months.
once you free the starter, flip it ass to front and itll come out easier!!!
Fucking duramax
Why not actually show the job instead of just talking?

Ugh.
Thanks
