@@RoccoRichardson The process of actually using HLG for high dynamic range from an 8bit camera like this isn't ideal given the process involved. I haven't used it much though and am far from a colorist so feel free to seek better advice than mine on that :) I also have never been a fan of Slog2 on Sony's either because I find it's SOOO tough to get skin tones looking decent again + you usually need strong ND filters + it's only 8bit. Hey Dan! Great video mate. In your opinion: is this a6400 the one to choose if I want to upgrade my old Nikon D5100?. My main goal is photography and I’m starting in videography. Would you choose this a6400 over other ones in this price range (no more than $1000), maybe like the canon m50?
Hi Joaquin! I have a D5100 and a few years ago bought a A6000 for my wife to use...I now no longer even touch my D5100. The autofocus, dynamic range and image quality are SO MUCH BETTER on the Sony. So, whether or not an A6400 is exactly the right camera to get, I can definitely tell you that you'll be happy with the upgrade.
4:43 rolls around. It's time to dunk on this camera...let's begin. Especially liked the chuckle when mentioning the cameras touch capability. hahaha. Great video!
hahaha. Can't let Sony...a company that makes smartphones will killer touch screens and 75" tv's get away with putting this POS screen and crummy interface in their cameras lol
Great overview team Watson. Just a technical point; You should consider balancing the background music with your speech to camera better-I had to keep turning the volume up and down in between. Anyway, this camera would not tempt me away from my Nikon DSLR gear right now, even though I like mirrorless and shoot both stills & video. I feel that it should have IBIS, a fully articulating screen, better touch functionality whereby you can use it for everything (i.e. shooting, menus & playback), and Sony needs to put out more lens choices for their APS-C line-up.
I mean the A7III is a better camera with better image quality but double the price with more expensive lenses required so I think the budget and needs are important questions
I've seen, I believe, all videos that came out on the new A6400. In the end, I'll be saving up to buy another A7III and I'll be fine. The A7III will be getting those same firmware updates and hell, it does cost the double but since I already have the lenses... Great video guys!
@@learningcameras Hm, I've "revisited" my views on this after watching more videos and doing some research... Since I'd need another camera mostly (if not only) for video (interviews, events..) then maybe an A6400 would be an affordable option because I can use my full frame lenses on it, and use the difference in price to the A7III to buy another good lens. I've also got my 16-55mm kit lens that I've got with my A5100 that's just fine for (well lit) video, so.... Thinkin' thinkin'..
What lenses were used in the intro beach scene with the model, in the black outfit portrait pic, volleyball scene, the park scene leading to the car scene....these are the scenes im sold on this camara...amazing review video, thank you

Hey! If you shoot video, yes. If you only care about photos, the quality hasn't improved much but there is a vast improvement to autofocus if you find your a6000 struggles and some little tweaks here and there that would make it tempting
The viewfinder on the A6000 is too low resolution IMO. That and the touchscreen and AF seem great additions. The body is quite a bit bigger in the A6400 (much thicker) but it is not nearly as heavy as the A6300 or the A6500.
Great review! I love the autofocus that camera has. The only cons I really see are no IBIS and the video record button placement. I’ve hit that button so many times by accident on the a6500.
Thanks! If you shoot video definitely and if you are struggling with the AF performance on your A6000. Otherwise it's mostly minor upgrades and the image quality is about the same
Your reviews are great! BUT this camera isn't really an upgrade from the A6300 if we take away the flip screen - I believe we'd agree on that to a certain extent. You know what's my true vlogging camera? The Sony RX100-V (because the of the in-built ND-filter). Also, while I appreciate the always-ON EyeAF, we can still map any custom keys for that. I'm willing to see what Sony's plans are to replace/upgrade the A6500 though. Until then, I'll stick to my A6500 for quite some time :) Cheers on the great review!!
Amazing video. I was wondering how about the percent of photos in focus? I'd like to use it for sports and some astro so how about the max ISO?. Thanks.
Sony just doesn't want to change the design to save money. They could fix the issues but it would mean a redesign. Like a flip out instead of a flip up, a larger battery, usbc, a better touch screen. All that stuff would mean redesigning the body and for some reason they just are cheaping out on that.
I think this is really an A6300 upgrade; the body, button lay outs and texture on the dials resembles the A6300. Just like the Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions said I think I might get an A6300. It'll be an upgrade/downgrade from my A6500 I don't care if it doesn't have IBIS my lenses have OIS I don't mind too if the buffer is not as big...it'll be the B cam and that AF system and new updated Eye AF amazing. Too bad they won't have this tech updated for my A7R II.
As owner of A6500, I would never buy a camera like A6400 without IBIS. Dear camera enthusiasts! I would recommend you to show patience and wait for A7000! The cineastic effects on this video are perfect but it depends on the skills of the photographer!

@@towkircontent I don't really know I don't yet own the camera. But for handheld, get a stabilized lens, because this camera doesn't have IBIS. For lowlight, just get a fast lens so you don't have to set the shutter speed so high. Sony cams are pretty good in lowlight
Image deos not look great alone but highly superior and excellence.

The colour grading on your videos are done well
Love all your videos, good job
I’ve just come to expect that Dan can make any camera look great.....Kudos 👍😎

Thank you very much for the info, Josh Haroldson. You told exactly what I was waiting to hear haha
Great video and its great to see all the different reviews of the same camera and what each tog gets from it
Thanks!
Outstanding video & review! 👍
Means the world!!! Thanks
mid & pro camera is able to record and capture scene with daylight ,continues light. Expect you show us "image or video in high iso " from sony A6400
hi! how good is it aganist elements?
Great review Dan and Sally
Great production!
Love the b-roll!
can the camera be used in sports photography? Coz people are saying the rolling shutter cant shoot fast moving object
Congrats for 100k subscribers...loved your video being a sony 6500 user myself...
Thank you so much!!! Yeah, really surprised they upgraded this camera the way they did and left it under the a6500
How good is the autofocus with sigma adapter lenses like with the mc 11 adaptor
Loved this vid! Great review. 😁👍
Thank you so much Jasper!
What a great camera, thinking to upgrade my a6000
Which one would u suggest? A6400 or a7iii
I mean the A7III is a better camera with better image quality but double the price with more expensive lenses required so I think the budget and needs are important questions
@@learningcameras for video?
I've seen, I believe, all videos that came out on the new A6400. In the end, I'll be saving up to buy another A7III and I'll be fine. The A7III will be getting those same firmware updates and hell, it does cost the double but since I already have the lenses... Great video guys!
Thank you so much!!! The A7III is amazing and the updates look great
@@learningcameras Hm, I've "revisited" my views on this after watching more videos and doing some research...
Wich Video Editor you use Guys... Love it 👍
Thanks! I edit everything in Adobe Premiere
I'm going for this Camera 🙌
What lenses were used in the intro beach scene with the model, in the black outfit portrait pic, volleyball scene, the park scene leading to the car scene....these are the scenes im sold on this camara...amazing review video, thank you
Thanks! Literally almost everything was shot with this lens : amzn.to/2T6FMVP
Wow...thank you... for a moment i thought a zoom lense was used
What lens did you to film this video? Is this video shot entirely on a6400?
Everything except the parts of us talking to the camera were filmed with the A6400 although we used a variety of lenses
This or canon m50 for photography??... I'm planning to buy a speedbooster if m50 is better
I don't like the M50 simply because the lenses are horrible with almost no selection. Plus we don't know what Canon will do now that they have the EOS R with another lens mount. They technically have 3 right now which is way too much
@@learningcameras what about image quality and other stuff... I will be investing in a speed booster and some ef lenses from Canon... Just needed your opinion regarding the image quality if it's any better or not than a6400... thanks
@@sushrutrathod9015 he tries to shit on Canon every chance.
@@tavarishamilton Hahaha. You know I actually have about $8000 in Canon gear right? If Canon released an awesome new camera I would be the happiest person EVER! I only picked up the Sony's because Canon seems unable to give me the stuff I need. Still can't bring myself to sell my 5D4 and lenses though but I rarely use it
@@sushrutrathod9015 The a6400 definitely has better image quality than the M50
Hi Dan - what lens would you recommend to pair with this camera specifically for Travel/Lanscape Videography?
Hey! So definitely check out the Sony 18-105mm F4 as an all around zoom lens: bhpho.to/2GuGEyk and then I like to pick up 1 wide aperture prime lens for low light and one of the best cheap options is the Sigma 30mm: bhpho.to/2N0F5Lq or possibly the 16mm if you want more of a wide angle option: bhpho.to/2yGkpnf
I do wish Sony would create a true touch screen and a less convoluted menu system.
Does a6400 record at variable frame rate or constant frame rate?
Will there be any audio sync issue in Adobe Premier Pro?
Constant frame rate so no audio sync issues
Is the a6400 good for filming sports? I'm filming baseball so I need a camera which has fast zoom and focus + propably need some lense since filming from a distance
Definitely the best for the price. Are you doing video or photos primarily and what kind of sports? I'll help you find a good lens
@@learningcameras videos primaly but occasional photos too. It's finnish baseball and I want to film this kind of material -> ruclips.net/video/9mBEePlGWRk/видео.html
Dan Watson cn u suggest best lense for photoshoots on a6400
I'm shooting on the original A6000, should I consider upgrading?
You can program it to use the shutter release button as a record button.
Nice video. I own a a6000. Do you think the a6400 would be an upgrade from that camera?
Thanks! If you shoot video definitely and if you are struggling with the AF performance on your A6000. Otherwise it's mostly minor upgrades and the image quality is about the same
@@learningcamerasI think the viewfinder resolution is a huge difference.
The video colors looks so good! Is this straight out of camera or what profile are you using for video?
I used the standard profile, lowered the contrast slightly, and I edit the colors in Premiere
Thanks! It’s so crisp!
I think 99% of all users won't be vloggers. In view of what it can do, why is this an entry level camera.
Until then, I'll stick to my A6500 for quite some time :)
Cheers on the great review!!
If only the RX100 had a mic input!!! and potentially a wider lens
6400 it's better
AF alone is a major upgrade
@@mrlqchenAND unlimited Record time ...
in the end it depends in whose hands the camera is while shooting
Amazing video. I was wondering how about the percent of photos in focus? I'd like to use it for sports and some astro so how about the max ISO?. Thanks.
Is 4K video cropped on the A6400 ? and is it cropped at 120p slow mo ? 1080P ? thanks for any info.
Yes, there is a slight crop at 4k 30 and 1080p 120 but it is very slight and almost unnoticable
Great review with quality video.
I think moving the mic might have helped..........Good job!
As always, great video. Can't wait to see your fuji xt3 video.
Great edit! Whas this shot in HLG? Cine4?slog2?
Sony got the RUclips influencers on lock. A big Canon move! Lol
Hahaha Canon what. It's like no one even talks about them any more.
As owner of A6500, I would never buy a camera like A6400 without IBIS. Dear camera enthusiasts! I would recommend you to show patience and wait for A7000! The cineastic effects on this video are perfect but it depends on the skills of the photographer!
You are more convinced than me that an a7000 is coming anytime soon
@@learningcamerasSony reps have said that a new APS-C that works like a mini-A9 is coming. Brand new form factor, viewfinder lined up with the lens... We would not know so much if it was a couple of years away still.
Will all those focusing feature continue to operate with a Sony E-mount full frame lens attached?
Yes, they are fully functional in either mount.
It’s elementary Mr. Watson!
Lol!
For same body price a6400 or a6500 as my first camera?
Interested to see if anybody will answer that...
David Aresti a6400 better but I deiced to get fuji x-t 30
Some of the best b-roll I’ve ever seen... wow.
Which lens were you using for the video shots of the sparkly coated blonde woman indoors and the wind fluttering fabric shot? Did you use the 24-70GM for FE for that b-roll too?
Thanks!!! Pretty much all the B-roll was shot using the Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS: bhpho.to/2A2EDV3
Since I didn't have stabilization in the camera, that was my go too. I am a huge fan of the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 as well: bhpho.to/2klEbf5 but just used the 35 on this shoot
Which lens use this camera
Plz can u tel the name of the first model in the first video shoot in ur vlog. She is so pretty I wanna follow her. Plz if u can share....!!! That would be great.❤️
Still don't know what to get, 6400 or xt30.. And it's black Friday week coming up. Anyone help me?
6400 if video is important, xt30 if it is less important. Also the Sony has better autofocus but the Fuji has the awesome style locked in. Hope that helps!

Sure does. We didn't really comment on colors because we can't access the RAW files yet but Sony states they are updated to the new colors

@@av24lakersCan you imagine using a camera for years and all of a sudden the colors start looking different? I am not sure they should make such a change...
