Isbell once said that he and Amanda were watching 'The Theory of Everything' together (Stephen Hawking movie), and he casually said "Hon, would you still have loved me if I only had a couple of years to live when you met me?" and she said "Oh baby, you did only have a couple of years to live when I met you." Saw them at Red Rocks last summer for the 4th time, if you ever have the chance, do not miss Isbell and the 400 Unit.
Watching some of the old live videos of the Drive By Truckers I'd say she was right. He'd have been long gone by now. She saved his life, and he's said more than once that he knows it.
Last summer my wife and I drove from Utah to Vail Colorado to see him there. He was great as usual. We have seen him several times and look forward to seeing Jason and Amanda again.
This is my favorite song of all-time. There is not a missed lyric in it. Each line is a bullseye. How many songwriters would write a song about being a drunk and their woman leaving them and just write a bunch of cliches about "baby, please come back" or "baby, I miss you." But he hung the whole premise of the song on describing how he would miss her so bad that he would miss the simple pleasure of hearing her sing in the shower. Absolutely brilliant.
It is difficult to imagine, but I might just agree with you that if this is not the best song he has ever written, it is near the top. Man, I just can't get over this. I have been following Jason from even before he met Amanda, and listened to his songs many times over. This may be his best.
Well said... I also love how her song choices show her personality, from Monty Python to Pink Floyd to Nancy Sinatra. Whoever she was, she had killer taste in music and a great sense of humor!
You know.....when Willie departs to join the band with Waylon and Johnny....guys like this will carry the torch and remind us of the timeless beauty of a perfect country song. And we got Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle to carry us through. But maybe ....Willie gonna outlive us all. Barbarossa!
Wish Jason would bring this back into the rotation. Heard in live In Richmond and it floored the crowd. The guy next to us was a struggling performer and he said it was the best crafted song he had ever heard. Jason is a treasure.
Just watched the HBO doc about Jason and Amanda. The segment of Jason at the private gig two days before he went into rehab is one of the most painful things I have ever watched. Makes songs like this all the more compelling. No secret that Jason suffers for his art; as do all of those around him. Fans included. Sometimes I wonder if Jason is like a car that lost a wheel and somebody put on the doughnut spare with two lug nuts instead of five and is now getting up to freeway speed...
Speaking of sound checks. When they played here in Lagrange Ga 2 years ago. He played his entire set list for his sound check. He stayed until 3 in the morning playing and fell in stories.
“In a room By myself Looks like I'm here with a guy that I judged worse than anyone else” Don’t need to be an alcoholic to identify with this line. A good dose of anxiety and/or depression feels like this too. What a line, I definitely needed this song during some of my tough moments.
My girlfriend of several years broke up with me on the day that my dad died and i sank into more addiction but this song was like a life preserver around my heart; i could numb out a lot of crap but i couldn't numb this song out and it pulled me back to the surface. ❤️🩹

Zachary Steffes my son is in recovery, 4 years and I listen to these lyrics and imagine what he feels everyday. But I am not an addict, I still feel the words in my soul. I guess they speak to my own demons.

On a lark, on a whim I said “There's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them” Some lines in songs you just live, they just get down inside your soul and become part of you. I lived this line 2 years ago, learned it like the hard lesson that it was.

One of my favorites by Isbell. I feel the lyrics "and the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees". I know what they mean and it is true. We all want to be "up there".
It's so surreal to see this such an incredible song being performed by this amazing artist going out to a totally empty theatre. I can't decide whether it's criminal waste ot absolute pefection

The recent death of Tom T Hall made me think of the old George Jone song, Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes. This Guy. This song paints a great picture in a way everyone who has broken up a long term relationship can relate to. Isbell more than fills the shoes.....

"And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please/ And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the tree" A poet who somehow makes a gut punch beautiful.
This song's full of amazing poetry. In a room, by myself Looks like I'm here with the guy that I judge worse than anyone else So I pace, and I pray And I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day I'm not sure that could have been written by someone who wasn't recovering.
"What is a poet? An unhappy person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music." Soren Kierkegaard
And a great song recorded as the band did their sound checks in one of America's great music venues---The Taft Theater in Cincinnati!! God Jason Isbell is such a great musician and singer songwriter...he just keeps getting better... One of the best things that every happened to Jason---he got his ass booted from the Drive By Truckers---and meeting Amanda Shires--both things got him sober and saved his life to make this incredible music for us all to live by---god we need such wonderful music now more than ever!!!!
In a room by myself…looks like I’m here with a guy that I judge worse than anyone else. That might be my all-time fave Isbell lyric….the whole song is freaking insanely true
This song is brilliant... I picture Isbell writing this song while in rehab and thinking about if Amanda Shires would still be waiting for him on the outside, but from his experience expecting that she would not still be there. The lyrics are just spectacular from the opening about there are two types of men in this world and you are neither of them (basically calling the other dude a pussy and then getting punched for it) then moving into his girl leaving him and having to "summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye". Leading to "another brief chapter without any answers moving by." (how many of us have been there, wondering what happened? was it me? was it her? does it matter? and realizing just another brief chapter without answers had moved by....) And we all know once you've lost her.... she's gone... it's just the way it works out with the ones worth keeping... "and experience robs me of hope that you'll ever call home, so I'm stuck on my own, I'm stuck on my own." Then the rehab lines... "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day" "And the churchbells are ringing for those that are easy to please" I won't share my thoughts on this one.. but it's a GREAT line... And experience tells me that I'll never hear them again, without thinking of them... ahhhh the song is just so poetic like most of isbell's songs you don't wanna ruin it by trying to explain it. lol
+Jared Cox : what a beautiful interpretation of this song. Knocked my socks off, your comment and the lyrics and song. Explaining it didn't "ruin it" at all. Helped a lot of people understand it, I'm sure. "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"
This album saved my life. I'm not exaggerating, but I won't elaborate. I'll forever love this guy for that.
I’ll second that
I believe you.

Way cool

Thank you for explaining the song. I'm not a native English speaker so I had a bit of trouble comprehending the message.

Over 5 years, clean and sober, and SO MANY of his songs resonate with me. Thanks Jason and keep cranking out the hits.
`I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he'd got the joke' Fantastic
This is a sound check....a freaking sound check and he sings better then most artists on a good night with everything set up properly!

Best sound check I ever heard was Chris Stapleton, 7 years in a venue.
I didn’t know that - makes it even better..
And SO many songs that make it big are written by him. He's a musical genius.
Every now and then I crank this video up and just sit in my living room thinking how great it is to be alive. Right now is one of those times

Agree, Caveman. He is an amazing songwriter. Once in a generation.

I said there's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them
And his fist
Cut the smoke
I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke
And in the car
Headed home
She asked if I had considered the prospect of living alone
With a steak
Held to my eye
I had to summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye
And another brief chapter without any answers blew by
And the songs that she sang in the shower
Are stuck in my head
Like "Bring Out Your Dead"
"Breakfast In Bed"
And experience robs me of hope
That she'll make it back home
So I'm stuck on my own
I'm stuck on my own
In a room

Looks like I'm here with a guy that I judged worse than anyone else
So I pace
And I pray
And I repeat the mantra's that might keep me clean for the day
And the songs that she sang in the shower all ring in my ear
Like "Wish You Were Here"
How I wish you were here.
And experience robs me of hope
That you'll ever return
So I breathe and I burn
I breathe and I burn
And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please
And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees.
And the songs she sang in the shower are stuck in my mind
Like "Yesterday's Wine", like yesterday's wine

In a room by myself…looks like I’m here with a guy that I judge worse than anyone else. That might be my all-time fave Isbell lyric….the whole song is freaking insanely true
Beautiful, soulful voice! 🎼❤️
Lovely. Such a gifted boy (from Alabama! Imagine that!!!!)
Oops - that was me, not my husband. But he feels the same.
VERY GOOD. LOVE.
Incredible song.
Just one of the best!
Thanks for sharing.
Always my " go too" song!
Brilliant songwriter❤

So amazing.
Such a great talent! Truly unique!
Like yesterday's wine...
So good.
so good
Back when he still had that cigarette smokin’ voice. Ugh I love him
So very beautiful
This song is brilliant... I picture Isbell writing this song while in rehab and thinking about if Amanda Shires would still be waiting for him on the outside, but from his experience expecting that she would not still be there.
The lyrics are just spectacular from the opening about there are two types of men in this world and you are neither of them (basically calling the other dude a pussy and then getting punched for it) then moving into his girl leaving him and having to "summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye".
Leading to "another brief chapter without any answers moving by." (how many of us have been there, wondering what happened? was it me? was it her? does it matter? and realizing just another brief chapter without answers had moved by....)
And we all know once you've lost her.... she's gone... it's just the way it works out with the ones worth keeping... "and experience robs me of hope that you'll ever call home, so I'm stuck on my own, I'm stuck on my own."
Then the rehab lines... "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"
"And the churchbells are ringing for those that are easy to please" I won't share my thoughts on this one.. but it's a GREAT line...
"Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"
Jared Cox love your review man.
Thanks for your interpretation - makes for me lot of sense… Im from switzerland and my english is not sooo good 😅
Is she monumentally stoic in her talent..?…I personally am in love with her at least situationally.
Pure quality.....
Love the little riff from Satch's "Summer Song" at 0:07
