This guy is the real deal. Someone said one of his songs is like a whole movie. Print out the lyrics and study them. He is a great songwriter. One of a kind.
I agree. It's like an acoustic or stripped down version, which is much more intimate. But I like the live versions with Sadler Vaden ripping too.l, I saw them live and it was a mix too!
"Time moves slow when you're seventeen and then it picks up steam at 21" is probably the most beautiful, and hauntingly nostalgic lyric I've ever heard in my life
Every time I listen to this set I enjoy it more than the last. And, I honestly couldn't begin to guess how many times I've listened to it at this point. If that's not a sign of great music I don't know what is.
"Goddamn Lonely Love" is the most eff-ing incredible song I've ever heard. I could listen to Jason sing that song, and play that guitar, all day long, all night long, until that lonely, desperate star gives up its last little bit of light... wonderful player; a musician with a poet's soul.
Close your eyes and remember this. It won't be back again, it's almost gone. Even times that don't seem like much will be your only crutch when you're alone. I just saw Jason Isbell last night in Salt Lake City. It was, hand down, the best concert I've ever been to. He is an incredible songwriter and incredible live. I'm a fan for life.
a few recommendations for you if you like this sort of talent: Zach Bryan, Sierra Ferrell, Lost Dog Street band/Benjamin Todd, Dayton Farley, Colter wall, and Willie Carlisle. Might not like all of the styles but al of those guys are raw as fuck like this dude.
Never get tired of Isbell, his songs continue to reel me in and become an even bigger fan, cool fact, my 9 yr old was listening with me and he said to me..dad, isn't he the guy who played in the Drive By Truckers? Too Cool!
Kudos to you as a father for teaching the kid such great music. My father was a drummer in an 80's style band. He tried his hardest to instill that sound in me. It never stuck. I've always been a blues and soul fan. I've seen Jason live twice and I still I'll continue to be amazed by his genius.
Great representative for Alabama. Great songwriter, great story teller, on the right side of politics as well. Made me feel good to see this. Best I have felt since we lost John Prine. Jason is in THAT category. Thank you Jason! You make us proud....
Great Representation of us Middle Class average Southerners who’s families did what that new to do to have a decent life. Treat people good and believe in something Bigger than Ourselves!
My new favorite artist. Caught him on Coachella last year. His ability to convey feelings, and emotions with a musicality that can just draw you into his personal world is just genius.
I keep coming back to this concert and particularly this version of Alabama Pines. I think Jason Isbell really proves here that he is capable of bringing his wonderful voice and superb guitar together to make something that is so rich. It just blows me away.
I grew up in Deep East Texas, very similar to how Jason did in Alabama, even lived in Alabama for several years. Pine Trees have played a big part in my life. And I am a recovering alcoholic. Hits Home Hard!
What is there like 40 people at this show? Man, would I have loved to be one of the few. Jason Isbell is a master lyricist and a pretty fucking amazing musician to boot.
dear Jason .. thank you for saving the real world of music for me and anyone who has tuned into your world . keep it goin' man , your way is so fine , Dylan said a song is anything that can walk by itself , your songs are all moving in full stride !
"I think I blocked just a park away but I can't really say it's been all night" So subtle but so captivating. ****After he sang that line****, I can see him on that dark road, having that conversation with himself in his head... because I had it all the time.
2:18 "Think I blocked just a park away, I can't really say, it's been all night." brilliant and subtle turn of phrase to illustrate just how drunk he really is.
In the hands of a lesser writer, it would come off as a hokey dad joke, but instead, as you pointed out, it just compounds the devastation in the song.
@@benjohnson2312 He actually fudged it up by accident in a songwriters circle (where you sit around and swap songs) and the people he was playing with suggested he keep it that way. It really helps the tone of the song. A happy accident ; ) great story..from the man himself.
He is IMHO the best songwriter alive, and that's in the glorious company of Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. Certainly there is simply no one in country music who's in the same room with him. Seems like a really nice guy, which is cool.Awesome in concert, saw him last night.
James Jones He's become my go-to favorite. When I want to really engage with music, I'll listen to Jason Isbell. I recommend him to everyone. An amazing talent.
James Jones He possess that rare talent you often don't find (especially in today's music world). The combination of his lyrics and melody are hypnotizing. Intoxicating almost. No matter what emotion you may be feeling when you start the song you always end with whatever emotion the song intends. Especially his sadder songs like Go It Alone or God Damn Lonely Love. It just hits you square in the feels.
I love everything this dude does. Loud. Quiet. He can do everything. Personal moment of quiet satisfaction: the solo's on "Decoration Day" he plays live these days.
Honestly. I'm supposed to be working right now and I just can't stop listening to this wonderful musician/songwriter. Oh, and I think he's very funny. (But I'm from 'Bama so I get the tongue-in-cheek jibes at ourselves). He's in beautiful voice here.
Just saw him last weekend in concert at CMAC in Canandaigua NY. Great show and this song, Go It Alone, was big in the set. I rode my motorcycle 400 miles to see the show, .. and another 170 miles AFTER the show cause I couldn't get a motel room. And it was worth EVERY INCH!

I wonder when they shot this three years ago they realized he'd be as big as he is now. I think if I was able to see this show, I'd been one dedicated groupie!
Jason Isbell is one of the best things going today. Going back to his days with Drive-By Truckers, he's just great at what he does. While I think he is finally getting some well deserved attention, more people should know his music. Much like Cory Branan, Jason is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation yet the general public knows nothing of him.
