Easily one of the best live recordings I've ever seen. And this setlist is phenomenal. I still find myself circling back to this performance once a month or so it feels like.
Bookmarked indefinitely. It’s here for when I need inspiration. I was late to the party, but my drink is always full when it comes to Jason. He’s the James Taylor of our generation. So prolific. So good and honest.
This has to be one of the best examples of recorded concerts I've ever seen. All the instruments are perfectly mixed. It's shot beautifully and edited wonderfully. What a great job by the crew on both teams.
I'm nearly 50 and kind of have felt this age since I was 26. Color me grateful to see such genius songwriting in my lifetime and to see him in concert in a few months. I tell people, if Springsteen was born in Alabama, or if Townes Van Zandt didn’t squander his gift on the bottle, they’d be Jason Isbell. I’m 64, and he’s one of the best lyricists of my lifetime.
I'm a boomer. This guy is a late discovery for me and I can hardly believe how good he is. He is conscious of his art and smart about it. It's a wonder to see a dyed in the wool artist who doesn't lose himself in self-destruction and who conquered his demons at such a young age and was able to move forward. This is a lucky generation.

You have some catching up to do. I found him by accident myself just about 4 yrs ago. I've not been so obsessed with any artist since Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I love the cheering in "Cover Me Up" after Jason sings about getting sober. We've lost too many beautiful minds to a romantic vision of mental illness/addiction. Here's proof positive you can be happy and still make great art.
I agree on the thought that we've lost too many people. I love that song and it makes me angry that during every pause, a handfull of people just can't let the silence hang there, they seem compelled to yell and whoop it up. A song with that much emotion, I just wish folks could just live in that moment.
They cheer because he got clean. I've heard in an interview or two that he loves when they cheer him on that line. I thought the crowd sounded very respectful.
Cody Housley I have no problem with them cheering that line. If you watch it again, they cheer on every single line when he pauses no matter what the content. That's what bugs me. He sings a line "to use me for good" and then it's instrumental for a few bars and 3 or 4 people have to whoop or holler every single time. It's an intensely personal song and every time he pauses doesn't need an idiot yelling "whooooooo!" Every damn time.
US audiences whoop all the way through shows. Either that or chat the whole way through. Why pay good money and do that? The filming of this is really outstanding. Great show. Looking forward to the UK show in October.

This is great, thanks! I got to see him at Merlefest a few months back. During "Cover Me Up" I look at my girlfriend and she has tears in her eyes. She was watching me mouth the words. I didn't realize my eyes were watering up. The guy delivers like no other. Don't know how you put that much of yourself into every song. I have 8+ years in recovery F'n love that he has had so much good come his way since he sobered up. Beautiful sh!t.
My Dad will tell you he's been clean and sober for one day and that he's been blessed to string those days into almost 30 years - one day at a time. He sent me a link to "Cover me Up" and said it had him tearing up too. I've talked to several of people in the program that say the same. He is a great example that there is life, love and acceptance in sobriety. Hope all is still going good for you too!
"Mama's and grandmothers love you, because that's all they know how to do." Wow, Jason and the 400 Unit! DRESS BLUES is the best song I have heard, that reminds all of us about the sacrifices of military families and the price paid for American freedom. When we beat the drums of conflict for someone's Hollywood war, dying too young, is the real price many of our young soldiers and their families face. My daughter enrolled in the army, just out of college. I listened to American Soldier, on her military graduation day and said a prayer for the smiling young men, some of them, coming back to their mothers already, in Dress Blues, somewhere. So many of us forget too, the American Armed Forces, include patriots of all races and color. Great concert guys, but DRESS BLUES makes me sad. Blessings Gold Star families. Thanks for the service of the veterans, active men and women we love and the sacrifices of those we lost. The children we raised to make a difference in this world. I pray for mine and yours.
Watched this dude as a 20 some year old kid with DBT to half empty club shows early on in his solo career to this. Couldn't be more proud of an artist I've supported for a long time. Congrats to Jimbo Hart who's always been nice to me as well as being a great bass player, ya did it man!
+Gary Miles Ha, it was an unintentional misprint on the original vinyl issue, not sure if it was repeated in other formats, but I believe they fixed it.
Tonight, at our house live music all night...Featuring This show, Brandi Carlile acoustic show & Jimmy Buffett & the Reefers at Snapdragon. I've see a lot of shows in my lifetime... This one show got moved to this later date. Was still the first show ever at the venue & sadly was Jimmy's last. He really was wonderful. This Boomer is kicking back. Concert is at home. 🎉2024🍾
Whoever suggested this be made into a live album is absolutely brilliant! I was fortunate enough to be at this show, albeit a bit too far back and bit too far buzzed. Fortunately, this video allows me to relive it over and over. By far the best recording of Isbell available online. Thank you, WGBH!!
He’s the best living singer/songwriter alive today with the only exception of Bob Dylan whom has had a good 40 year headstart on Jason. We don’t realize how damn lucky we are. Stadium shows when live music returns.
@@benjyhews9419 yeah that's true, but that doesn't bother me much, honestly I think there's a lot of live shows he Oversings on, after like 2004 I don't think there's a single really listenable version of decoration day just because he Oversings everything and kills the emotion.
@@lancewhite77 I try to stay away from "better/best", but I'd rather listen to Isbell than Dylan (or Springsteen for that matter) any day of the week. Never get tired of his art.
Jason is Unparalleled by anyone in the industry today! This is absolutely amazing, WGBH! Thanks for posting this! I am actually getting married on Saturday and decided to do our first dance to "Cover Me Up"!
this man Jason, he's the real deal. I already had upmost respect for him with his song writing and singing. When he took up for the late John Prine and Shaver at a music show by leaving and then telling about it I was truly amazed. Thank you Jason.
I've been listening to Isbell's solo stuff since he left DBT. It's ironic to me how good he is and how much I can't get enough of his music. You see, I was a fan of the Drive-By Truckers in the very early 2000's. At the time, in my circle of friends, we had a running joke that DBT put on the worst live shows of all time. In hindsight that wasn't very fair to say. However, I still saw them play a half a dozen times. At the shows I used to feel like Isbell held the band back, and he was just this weird chubby kid that seemed to like to wear tie dye shirts. I felt like Cooley and Hood were way better than Isbell. 16 years later and Isbell has passed up the rest of DBT by leaps and bounds. I saw him play in Lafayette in December of 2016 and was so blown away. It was one of the best shows I've ever attended. The other part of all this is that I last saw DBT play in 2013, and they had become a much better live band. I guess the moral to the story is don't be an asshole like me, and pay attention to musicians and their progression in their craft. They may just surprise you.
I remember seeing DBTs in the early 2000s and thinking about Mr. Isbell, 'theres something there, but he hasn't found it yet.' I was a big Cooley fan and I still am, but Isbell is a monster of an artist. He has definitely 'found it'!
@@charlesw.4576 he was hammered and on drugs for much of that time. It's what helped give him the perspective that he has but it may probably made him not the best performer or band mate or husband at the time (he was married to the bassist I believe)
I saw the Drive By Truckers a few times when Isbell was in the band and thought they were great although sloppy at times. Always loved Jason's songwriting contributions. I've loved all of his solo stuff and see him every year at Red Rocks when he comes through Colorado. Brilliant songwriter and also a blazin' guitar player. If you want to check out the DBT DVD of the Dirty South Tour, Live at the 40 Watt Club, in 2004 you may revise your opinion of them as a live band. They rocked and the songs by Colley, Patterson Hood and Isbell were all incredibly strong. It might get just as many views as this!
Curious to learn how hearing/seeing this show has changed you outlook on music. What had you been listening to up until now ( which is now a year ago, since you posted)?
Jason Isbell is one of the best songwriters and players of his time (along with Taylor Goldsmith). Support him, his band and live music -- they are not to be missed when they come to your area.
Saw him for the second time at Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia last March. He was my last set after five days of great music. Took me to a very happy place and headed home on a high. I could listen to these songs every day and never get sick of them. As someone else said, he is the real deal. Great songwriter, top band.
I was there with my 13 yr old daughter. Amazing show. Hard for me to understand how this guy isn't playing bigger venues but I guess we can enjoy it while we can.
I hope he dosen’t play bigger venues. On the other hand, he will be playing Red Rocks, outside of Denver in September. That’s one of the best venues on the planet.I wish I could be there.
Darren D From one Marine to Another, And one Darin to another Darren, I just heard that one myself a few days ago & it hit me as particularly special... Especially since it’s about one of his high school buddies that joined the ranks of United States Marines. Semper Fi Leatherneck!

I recently moved to Denver from Alabama. I get to tell everyone I meet about all the musical history that was formed in Muscle Shoals, AL. Of all the legends that have recorded music there, it's tough to pick a favorite. I've been to music festivals all over. I've probably been to over 100 shows throughout the country. However, getting to see Isbell perform at Red Rocks was, hands down, the best show I've ever been to. We all have our favorites, but I honestly can't think of a niche group that Jason's music wouldn't appeal to. No matter how much beer had been drank that night, you could hear a pin drop when Jason stepped up to the mic. Jason and Jimbo, if you ever come back to Red Rocks, you can bet for sure that I'll be back. I'd recommend to everyone who gets a chance to go see the show.
I absolutely love this group. Songs mean something and people can have a very personal connection to the words. Rarely are such great lyrics combined with such great music
Thanks for posting. Awesome show! Saw this band without Amanda open for my morning jacket and they crushed it. So many great moments here. Perfect demonstration of Jason's talent. He'll break your heart on one song, lift your spirit in another, then he decides to rock out and shows he's one of the great guitarists out there. His slide solo on Children of Children is a must see, as is his Decoration Day solo. Sadler Vadin's also no slouch and crushes it in the Decoration Day coda. The whole band is killer on Cover Me Up. That's a song that they really perfected live and it's stunning. Amanda also does a great job in key moments. Great to watch!
I was at this concert, off to the left side of the stage towards the front, we had no idea it was being recorded. Nice bonus to see a great concert over again. The crowd was impressive- everyone singing along, happy, the way it should be. Shovels and Rope opening were incredible.
Saw him again a few days ago in Omaha. He was excellent as always, Sadler was on fire, and the band was tight. Won't lie though, I missed Amanda and Jimbo a bit. Today this concert recording popped up again on my feed, and I'm reminded how much I love this era as well. Isbell's got some great new songs in Miles, This Ain't It, and Strawberry Woman. But....if I could hear him open with Palmetto Rose again...yeah, sign me up for that :)
I just saw him recently at Red Rocks and he and the band absolutely killed it for the whole show, and they saved a little extra for the encore. Amanda opened and that was bittersweet, but she also knocked it out of the park. I saw him in Birmingham at Avondale Brewing last year and the local crowd was so full of energy and so welcoming I had a brief thought of moving there- it felt like going to a family reunion where you don't know anyone but they adopt you on the spot.
Thanks for this video. I've seen Isbell & band a couple times now, but this tour's show (I saw them in St. Louis, MO) was stunning. Everything is firing on all cyclinders and he's pretty much hit the "mastery" stage of his career that few people ever get to. It's fun to watch.
Saw Jason in Brighton in the UK back in January 2016, he along with DBT have restored my love of music. You in the US are so lucky to have people like them! Excellent!
Saw him in Indianapolis a few months ago and, except for a few shitkickers in the back, the place was like a church when he sang. Almost everyone in there hanging on every single word. I've never seen anything like it.
+Andrew Kling I missed him in Pittsburgh in March...and I can believe what you said about it being "church"...damn, he just brings it and those lyrics are amazing.
This is a fantastic show. I can't believe it only has 17k views . I'm glad WGBH is doing more of the Front Row recordings. I've been watching them for the last year or so.
I saw Jason for the first time this past January at the Disney Hall in LA for my 58th birthday. It was like church. It's been decades since a song writer felt like he was speaking directly to me. The show was amazing with just he and Amanda. Hopefully the world will be back to normal in July when I have tix for the 400 Unit at the Greek.
Brilliant end to end performance. At to 1:07:00 mark, Cover Me Up, is tremendous. The deeply personal introduction. The backstory of his addiction. The intense power in his voice. And, oh that look she gives him of true love. A great artist and a great testament to recovery in that song.
This is so good. Love the cheer Jason gets in cover me up when he sings the line 'but I sobered up, I swore off that stuff forever this time'. Ya can tell Jason appreciated the applause. Gave me goosebumps. He's a class act.
I thank you Jason, this is healing music and is touching my soul just where I need it. I thank you and GOD For blessing my ears and heart with this .......if you are ever near Raleigh, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
Fantastic concert, so full of emotion. This adds to a snowy Saturday afternoon. Jason is a gifted singer, musician and songwriter. Plus, his band kicks ass as well. The black & white cinematography really adds to the show. I can't wait until live performances are the norm again. Maybe, just maybe once we have overcome this pandemic, Jason would be kind enough to pop up the the Great White North, just an hour East over the CA/US border where the I95 ends and grace our Harvest Festival like he did in 2019. Until then Good speed and stay safe.
This man is such an incredible talent! I’m in such awe of his writing, and he’s also a great musician. I had the honor of seeing him live last summer, but I will see him any chance I can for as long as he is performing!
Nicely filmed. Caught this tour in NE Ohio in a great venue. I have been telling everyone about this guy for past few months. His last 2 albums are among my favorites and I don't even count myself as a country music fan (not popular country anyhow)

Watched this dude as a 20 some year old kid with DBT to half empty club shows early on in his solo career to this. Couldn't be more proud of an artist I've supported for a long time. Congrats to Jimbo Hart who's always been nice to me as well as being a great bass player, ya did it man!
+Gary Miles Jimbo's the unsung hero of SMTF. Amazing lines.
(He's so unsung they left his name off of the original album credits!)
That sucks, maybe he should become an asshole then he'd get some credit, because being nice isn't working.
+Gary Miles Ha, it was an unintentional misprint on the original vinyl issue, not sure if it was repeated in other formats, but I believe they fixed it.
Isn't it cool? Just a few years ago, all my friends said "Jason who?" Now everyone loves him.
Me too!!
I am still listening to this concert even today! I wish I saw it live, what a show!
I can never get through a Jason Isbell show without tearing up and dancing to exhaustion at least once...sometimes in the same song.
Better than Dylan, in my opinion.
The difference is Isbell can sing..... the same cannot be said for Dylan.
Check out Amos Lee, I just heard Jason Isbell for the 1st time about a month ago thanks to Spotify for playing these amazing Singer Songwriters.
Cover me up hits me every time. What a powerful song. Brilliant.
Jason put on one of the best shows I've ever been to. If you are watching this, thinking about seeing him, just do it.
Helluva show. His gift is making every song feel like it was written just for you. He’s a damn fine songwriter
Best songwriter on the road right now. He's amazing.
Man, what a band..especially his drummer, Chad..absolute beast.
I’ve often thought the same thing.
Love this set- I think it actually sounds better in black and white :)
Jason is Unparalleled by anyone in the industry today! This is absolutely amazing, WGBH! Thanks for posting this! I am actually getting married on Saturday and decided to do our first dance to "Cover Me Up"!
Best songwriter out now, period 👍 I'm a late comer to the show but I'm on board and loving the catch up with all his albums👌
his work is beautiful Southern Gothic poetry put to music. I cannot get enough.
Well put and I agree!
This guy is absolutely unbelievable, as good as it gets!!!
Man!!! This oughta have a hundred million views and counting!! It just don't get much better than this!!!
One of the best songwriters of any generation!
I love to hear Jason Isbell sing! It's magic! And of course, I remember those alabama pines... He deserves a massive contract!
this man Jason, he's the real deal. I already had upmost respect for him with his song writing and singing. When he took up for the late John Prine and Shaver at a music show by leaving and then telling about it I was truly amazed. Thank you Jason.
Finally got to see him two weeks ago. Small out door venue in East Providence RI. What an awesome show. Can't wait for the next one.
@@uns33n yeah, but they knew each other before they were all in the Truckers
This show has changed my whole look on music and song. writing best show ever!!!!
Curious to learn how hearing/seeing this show has changed you outlook on music. What had you been listening to up until now ( which is now a year ago, since you posted)?
I was there! Whole concert blew me away but Dress Blues was amazing
He has said he would rather do 8 nights at the Ryman than MSG.
WOW. As a former Marine, Dress Blues hit home hard. First time I've heard this one. Thanks, Jason.

Especially since it’s about one of his high school buddies that joined the ranks of United States Marines.

Found this guy by mistake, looking for some real country music, yep, here it is. This is the real deal. Wonderful.
I love the little bits of stage banter between Jason and Amanda. Makes me think of Johnny and June ;)
Best Isbell video recorded set since ACL. Thank you WGBH, my sincere appreciation for posting this.
+4199ny Thanks for the compliment!
You could be right
Gotta agree, this is fabulous, love the black n white!!
Thanks, Wayne!
Such a treat. It's a flawless concert and not in the least because of the excellent quality of the recording.
When Amanda harmonizes in and takes over vocals for a split with her angelic voice in Dress Blues at end (22:41)... perfection.
+4199ny Yeah she really lifts the song a notch. Great stuff.
This era was Jason's peak, in my opinion. Such great songwriting and playing.
His latest record Weathervanes is phenomenal. Second only to Southeastern.
Saw him at Bass Concert Hall in Austin. 3rd row seats. Great show. One of the best I ever saw. He is the real deal.
I was there -- also with great seats. He is the real deal.
I come back to this recording so often. So well filmed and the set list is excellent.
It came on RUclips on my phone right before I went to sleep. When it was over it played on in the dream . Its 5 in the morning and I just finished listening to it for real for the first time. You now the feeling when your crying and you feel your life was worth living, like you life has been epic.
His talent is only exceed by his fortune in marrying Amanda. Great to see them together on stage. Reminiscent of Johnny and June. God Bless.

I just saw Jason and the 400 unit again at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Ok. They keep getting better. The show was outstanding.
This Tulsa girl wanted sooooo badly to be there! I am going to Red Rocks in May! The Cap in NYC last month was sublime.
Lucky enough to see Jason at the Ryman in Nashville. Absolutely mesmerizing and as close to perfect as it gets.
I envy you.
Same, being a DBT fan and an idiotic Isbell fan, It was wonderful. Love the Ryman, it adds magic to every show.
How could this ever get a thumbs down? Jason is the best.
I don't know how many times i listened and watched this. And it is just as beautiful every time. Just WOW!
93 people have no soul. This is straight to the heart joyous music. Hallelujah!!
I moved from Denver to GA. Agree, everytime jason is in town or nearby we go! Redrocks show would rule!!!
Saw that show. Stunning night.
JI is coming to Red Rockies this summer
@@sgurule1437 I understand that David Crosby is on the bill for September too.
Greg and the team at Front Row, great job. Looks and sounds as amazing as I remember; thanks for capturing this man & his band on their ascendance.
+Jon Finnimore Thanks, Jon! Appreciate the comment & thanks for watching!
Is this available to buy on cd/dvd?
The "Dress Blues" solo with guitar and violin is so gorgeous.
My favorite band at the moment. They have been ever since I heard Southeastern when it came out. Keep it up guys, you all rock equally ;)
Just was introduced to this group and I'm now a fan !
My favorite contemporary singer-songwriter. Great concert.
I absolutely love this group. Songs mean something and people can have a very personal connection to the words. Rarely are such great lyrics combined with such great music
Still watching this one years later; a masterpiece of a concert
Attended his concert in Boston in July 2023 and am going to Portland Maine in February 2024! One of my favorite bands!
I saw the band one month before this gig en Hamburg... My first time and last (I hope not so long), an unforgettable night!!!
I made a point of seeing him in his home state and seeing him with a hometown crowd was worth the trip.
I've lost count of how many times I have replayed this performance of Dress Blues but its not enough yet.
Can't count how many times I've watched this video this week... Just booked for his only UK show in Edinburgh, can't wait!
I was at this show. Awesome to have this to re-watch.
Proud to say I listen to this at least once every fucking day. Wish it were available on CD.
He just released a live recording from the Ryman Aud., it's pretty great.
I saw him at the Chicago Theater in February and it was the same thing. It was a reverence I've not seen at a rock show before...amazing.
Ditto in Atlanta about a year ago... it was outdoor venue at a festival and still the same type of attentiveness..
Andrew Kling That's because Isbell is a poet who happens to also be an amazing musician.
jerrkyd You nailed it!
Going to see Jason live for the first time on July 10th in Boone, first chance since I became a fan a couple of years ago. Gonna be awesome!
This is a fantastic show. I can't believe it only has 17k views . I'm glad WGBH is doing more of the Front Row recordings. I've been watching them for the last year or so.
+Joshua Williams Thanks for watching, Joshua!
I'm new to Jason Isbell and the 400 unit. I've been listening to him for past three days.
The more you listen, the better it gets.
What a great songwriter and performer. Jason Isbell is some fresh air out there in music world.
This is so good. Love the cheer Jason gets in cover me up when he sings the line 'but I sobered up, I swore off that stuff forever this time'. Ya can tell Jason appreciated the applause. Gave me goosebumps. He's a class act.
I HAVE CONTRIBUTED 10% OF THE VIEWS OF THIS VIDEO.
Today's quarantine pleasure - thanks
I've wathced this at least 5 times all the way through .... & I'll keep on watching its incredible.
I love that the entire show is in black and white. Classy.
This really is one of the greatest recordings of live music, ever! Right up there with Allman Brothers at The Fillmore!
Nicely filmed. Caught this tour in NE Ohio in a great venue. I have been telling everyone about this guy for past few months. His last 2 albums are among my favorites and I don't even count myself as a country music fan (not popular country anyhow)
Thank you! appreciate the comment
Absolutely agree. I looked him up after a recommendation from a Dawes fan, and I am glad I came.
He's not country, he's southern. :0)
