Jason Isbell gets near universal acclaim and I still think he's criminally underrated. The man can take out your heart, chew it up and stick it back in your chest and leave you thankful.
Amber your comment is crazy contradicking. I was so upset he left Drive by Truckers. That was as good as a guitar attack I've ever witnessed. Now I see that we have Jason and the Truckers so it's all good.
"A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor." That Lyric has never left my mind since I first heard it. It reminds me of when I was going through Bulimia. I remember I walked into the bathroom to throw up my food, but I stopped myself and left to never returned to that mind set.
This song has gotten me through my darkest days. Not unrequited love. Just a lot of loss. Brother in law, Father and Grandmother within 6 months. Thank you.
My son died august , 1,2021from alcoholism , he played every song Jason ever wrote/truly gifted with a guitar, self taught , he loved this song, It breaks my heart every time I hear it I cry, a diease of loneliness alcoholism/ matt was 35 you guys never give up seeking help please, he did so much lost...
So sorry to hear. I cant imagine the hurt. Isbell’s writing and especially his performances bring out the emotion that takes a great song to the next level and makes music connect to our lives. I have an Isbell live experience in a similar but different story that is too long to go into here but I will never forget.
I'm sorry Cheryl. I'm worried about a friend of mine. He drinks ALOT but appears healthy.... But it's enough to make me worry. He is 36. Amy advice/signs I should watch out for?
I am so sorry for your loss. It’s such a horrible illness and I am so sad that it took your sweet boy. I’ll keep you in my positive thoughts and hopes, Miss Cheryl. Sending some love to you today and going forward from Massachusetts! 😔❤
There is ONE...Elephant. That is mainly because I discovered Southeastern in 2014 and we listened to it constantly on the long drives to my wife's chemo treatments. That track always got skipped because it was too much.
Perfection. Don’t forget we’re living in a time when we can watch, and listen to, this whenever we want! We’re blessed! Be thankful. It doesn’t get any better than this. 🤘🏽🎸
This version of this song is just criminally underrated! It has so much. So many good crescendos, Chad Gamble having a blast on the drums, and that solo/bridge towards the end of the song...Live from Alabama in general is such a great album and I hope that anyone that found him after Southeastern goes back and listens to this album.
Amen. I appreciated Jason during the DBT days. I became a huge fan with his first solo albums, especially Here We Rest. But I fell deeply in love with his music with Live from Alabama.
Love the line I’m not really falling to sleep I’m fading to black!!! Btw, he was still very much an addict when he originally wrote this song! Thank god he is sober now! I’m in recovery as well
Just addicted to Jason Isbell. Can't stop listening to him and this is probably my favorite of all his songs but not sure cause they're all so good. Who can choose? Best songwriter ever!
Sorry for bumping an old comment, but I couldn't agree more. There is no filler in his songs. Every single line is a whole universe unto itself. He's the best living songwriter in my opinion. Whenever I'm feeling...anything, really, I look for one of his songs, and find solace. I hope I get to see him live some day.
Come back to this one, huge truckers fan but to see him out of rehab here and taking his song from then to another level never seen is just incredible. The guy has no limits.
This is one of the best live performances I have ever seen his music created a bond between me and the love of my life unfortunately it takes more than love for two people to make it in this world and we dident
Jason, Cody, Sturgill and Tyler take it to another level when they are live. I barely listen to the studio versions anymore bc they sound so great live.
This is without a doubt one of my favorite songs and favorite rendition by Isbell. Every note he plays and lyric he sings feels authentic. Finding his music is like an act of falling in love.
been listening to this southern poet since the DBT days, Isbell has a voice that pulls you and makes you emote involountarily, just saw him in Geneva, NY at the Smith Opera House. Even with a botched mix job by local staff his genius and stage command overpowered the audience. I don't think there is anyone in his league.
I was supposed to see him at the tribute show for Justin Townes Earle at the ryman Jan 4th . Covid postponed it 😢. Jason was playing and alot of others lucinda Williams, Ben Nichols, Old crow med show, Social Distortion, etc , and of course Steve Earle
I wouldn't necessarily say that this is my favorite song of all time, but this version is my all time favorite musical recording. Every second is absolute perfection.
Yup...depending on how you lived your own particular version of it.....I keep saying I have gotten to where I miss the people who I told these things to back when ..its like a circle..never seems to end..
I saw him 3 times last year and it wasn’t enough. Looking forward to years and years of great music from him on top of an already deep catalogue. Between him, DBT, Ryan Bingham, Hays Carll, and others the world is in a good place for meaningful music.
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Jason Isbell in Raleigh and then Charlotte the following night (this week); Absolutely amazing, an incredible voice, a rare glimpse of raw, masterful emotion....as his transformation progresses, his music follows...such an old soul
"The sun's a desperate star, that burns like every single one before." Timeless, fully human, unparalleled full hearted lyrics. Love this song so much and this version the best. Love love love.
this song takes me back to days gone by, of sitting in a bar, having just broken up with someone, and finding myself on a crying drunk!!! or longing for that one who i cant have!! and even now, when i listen to this song, oh so many years later, i cant help but think back to that one who i always think back to!! i am pretty sure these are the feelings the song is supposed to invoke in us all.
Yeah that's pretty much my thought ..being in a motel with some girl you both got so much baggage and getting fucked up try. To forget..it works but. Not for long still is better than being lonely alone..I ll take two of what your having and all the other problems that come along with you...anything to kill this feeling..the funnything is ..fod me anyway..I now get lonely for some of those girls now ...just cant win I guess..
I have yet to see a better live performance than this song, since Alchemy. That speaks volumes. Completely subjective but I am completely moved inside and out like a desperate burning star. Thank you, Jason. Thank you DBT.
Hey Grtfled72, your comment made me smile. I'm from Massachusetts & my response was this is true New England/Canadian roots rock. I guess great music is universal! Love the song & love him.
Yeah ..it makes you want to cry but its sweet sorrow..some people never are lucky enough to get that feeling or under stand that it's the spice of life...my opinion I suppose..
I remember when i heard this song fornthe first time. I think paul rudd recommended it on the opd iTunes. 2009?. Been a gan ever since. Get to see him play tomorrow night. Im gonna cry. One of the best song writers of our time
I'm not a Luke Bryan fan but your statement is still ignorant 4 years later. Chris Stapleton has written songs sang by Luke Bryan. Stop drinking the kool-aid and think for yourself, maybe research for yourself.
Lyrics:got green and I got bluesAnd everyday there's a little less difference between the two. So I belly-up and disappear. most powerful song I've ever heard in my 42 year existence. I only wish I wasn't living it. As I try and kill this goddamn lonely goddamn lonely love at least i got the perfect theme song. guess ya gotta live it to really feel it . Hats of to Jason Isbell for the perfect country and western song. I AIN't really FALLING ASLEEP IM FADING TO BLACK over this GODDAMN LONELY GODDAMN LONELY LOVE🏆❤🔫
Going to see this awesome dude again in June in Akron. Didn't catch him in Pittsburgh earlier this year. Would love to see him perform this. This will be the fifth time seeing him and he has never played this before. Jason if you are reading this, lol, give it a shot in Akron!

Jason Isbell gets near universal acclaim and I still think he's criminally underrated. The man can take out your heart, chew it up and stick it back in your chest and leave you thankful.
That about sums it up. Hard to keep dry eyes at an Isbel show.
Perfectly said! 👏
I’ve heard sad songs to make a Georgia man cry.
Amber your comment is crazy contradicking. I was so upset he left Drive by Truckers. That was as good as a guitar attack I've ever witnessed. Now I see that we have Jason and the Truckers so it's all good.
Best songwriter ever possibly
"A man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor."

I literally have not heard ONE Jason Isbell song that I don't LOVE. He is absolutely brilliant.
Hannah Bush completely agree
There is ONE...Elephant. That is mainly because I discovered Southeastern in 2014 and we listened to it constantly on the long drives to my wife's chemo treatments. That track always got skipped because it was too much.
Same
Perfection. Don’t forget we’re living in a time when we can watch, and listen to, this whenever we want! We’re blessed! Be thankful. It doesn’t get any better than this. 🤘🏽🎸
One of the best song ever written. Period.
Yep. You said it the best.
Yes. And turtles all the way down
@@johnbaugh2437 I love Sturgill but you're out of your mind comparing that to this.
Agree.
“Well, I ain’t falling to sleep, I’m fading to black “.
Not sure if there is a more perfect song..... best lyricist of this generation.
This version of this song is just criminally underrated! It has so much. The snare sizzle just floored me....
Thanks for the tip. Gonna go back and give it all a listen.
Looks like lil Ken ken. Warsaw.
Despite Southeastern being a masterpiece, I think Live from Alabama is my favorite of his albums.
Love the line I’m not really falling to sleep I’m fading to black!!! Btw, he was still very much an addict when he originally wrote this song! Thank god he is sober now! I’m in recovery as well
The world needs more horn sections
Not truer words have ever been spoken
Kudos to the sound / recording engineer on this track. Every part comes through clean and is balanced well with all others.
Just addicted to Jason Isbell. Can't stop listening to him and this is probably my favorite of all his songs but not sure cause they're all so good. Who can choose? Best songwriter ever!
Marie Matheny so well said....
I couldn't possible choose a favorite. The man is incredible.
Elephant is powerful too. 😊❤️✌️
I agree completely! Just found this song and I am in heaven. Every one of them are blissful. The poetry in his words is insane.
A hybrid of jazz, blues, country & rock all in one song. Amazing.
Come back to this one, huge truckers fan but to see him out of rehab here and taking his song from then to another level never seen is just incredible. The guy has no limits.
Well said!!!
This is my favorite version of this great song. He nails it live and it comes alive in painful melody.
Nearly a prefect song. I have never fully trusted anyone who cannot be moved by music.
He puts into words things everyone feels and knows but never have words for.
Never gets old. Honestly, one of the best songs ever written.
This is one of the best live performances I have ever seen his music created a bond between me and the love of my life unfortunately it takes more than love for two people to make it in this world and we dident
Thanks for the tears brother, Goddamn beautiful song sir!
Jason, Cody, Sturgill and Tyler take it to another level when they are live. I barely listen to the studio versions anymore bc they sound so great live.
I absolutely love the horn section on this

Oh shut up Barry. Jesus Christ.
Right on Barry
definitely one of the best songs ever written. And what I love about this performance it is right after he got sober I believe. So good!
Dude is in the top 5 poets of the past 50 years. Oh yeah, he also plays guitar in a band...
Damn this song! Omg!! Remember when I heard it first when he was in drive by truckers and he has just improved on it
Damn, you boys sure can play...brilliant! Love it! Thanks
Don't get much better than Jason. Had the pleasure to see him and his wife play a song with Ryan Adams at the Ryman Auditorium. It was amazing.
Dustin McFarland you saw the prophet at the temple. wow.
Dustin McFarland nothing better
I was supposed to see him at the tribute show for Justin Townes Earle at the ryman Jan 4th . Covid postponed it 😢. Jason was playing and alot of others lucinda Williams, Ben Nichols, Old crow med show, Social Distortion, etc , and of course Steve Earle
What an Awesome song and artist!! Love his voice! Love this song ♥️💔♥️
"I'll take 2 of why you're having and all of what you got", Cant wait to see isbell live this summer!
Finally saw Jason on New Years in Nashville absolutely the best
That drummer..he's feelin it.
Isbell is such an amazing songwriter. This song punches me in the gut every fkn time.
I love this song so much. I come back to it over and over.
I wouldn't necessarily say that this is my favorite song of all time, but this version is my all time favorite musical recording. Every second is absolute perfection.
Best song ever. Pure raw pain and empathy.
Yup...depending on how you lived your own particular version of it.....I keep saying I have gotten to where I miss the people who I told these things to back when ..its like a circle..never seems to end..
Try listen to beth hart if you haven't yet...you will absolutely love her ..I promise

Isbell is just a perfect songwriter. What a great drummer too!
Man, Chad Gamble doesn't get enough respect on the drums I don't think. His rhythm carried this song amazingly.
He is a bad ass for shure. Such a patient style and super efficient. He drove that song like a rock crawler going up a mountain.
Totally agree! I’m not even a drummer and his drumming gives me goosebumps!
Chad is a perfect drummer for a songwriter like Jason. Although I miss the old days when Chad would sing Hey Pocky Way with the JI and The 400 Unit.
Chad is a beast. Just saw them in NYC and was floored. Best band and songwriter working today!
Agreed! Don't even get me started cause I'll rant all day. That left foot man.
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Jason Isbell in Raleigh and then Charlotte the following night (this week); Absolutely amazing, an incredible voice, a rare glimpse of raw, masterful emotion....as his transformation progresses, his music follows...such an old soul

WOW! Didn't think the studio version from The Dirty South could be improved but here it is! Absolutely amazing stuff here!
This song is an absolute amazing contribution to our world
No way teena. U can't pull that off.
I have yet to see a better live performance than this song, since Alchemy. That speaks volumes. Completely subjective but I am completely moved inside and out like a desperate burning star. Thank you, Jason. Thank you DBT.

classic song ... great lyrics... sooooo glad to be seeing u in Dublin may 14
this song is my life. i love JI more than anyone right now
No kidding! I really love horns in music, it adds great depth (and class). Beautiful job by all.
The Love of my Life,, left me, after 36 1/2 years. I sure as hell Know about Lonely Love! No better way to state it,, than what Jason sings. 👍😊❤️✌️
I could listen to this all fucking day thank you J and keep sticking it to the corporate radio magnets
what a version!!!
Best version of one of his best songs
The band is loving it! Such a cool band
Absolutely wrecks me every time I listen to this but in a good way
Yeah ..it makes you want to cry but its sweet sorrow..some people never are lucky enough to get that feeling or under stand that it's the spice of life...my opinion I suppose..
I find it funny that 59 people have this a thumbs down. Those 59 people are obviously not in anyway able to hear the beauty of this song.
They clap on the 1 and the 3…
Best recording and sound ever!
Great song from a great songwriter and musician!
I remember when i heard this song fornthe first time. I think paul rudd recommended it on the opd iTunes. 2009?. Been a gan ever since. Get to see him play tomorrow night. Im gonna cry. One of the best song writers of our time
There are some songs that you just can't turn up enough !
This is my all time favorite guitar solo. If it don't make you feel something, you can't feel nothing.
The man has got the music.
Wow. Amazing version of an amazing song.
"Sister, listen to what your daddy says.
Don't be ashamed of things that hide behind your dress." You won't hear Luke Byan sing something like that
I'm mot sure I know what he meant exactly...but he didn't hold back any emotion in this one...
I'm not a Luke Bryan fan but your statement is still ignorant 4 years later. Chris Stapleton has written songs sang by Luke Bryan. Stop drinking the kool-aid and think for yourself, maybe research for yourself.
It's actually "...what your daddy said..behind your DREAD."

Check out doing fine by zach bryan
Hope you’re doing ok. I’m there with you.
I know exactly how you’re feeling
"Elephant" is such a powerful song. The dude writes some of the most amazing stuff. You are correct about DBT losing a ton when they split.
Saw him do this with DBT a few times about 12 or 13 years ago, so good!
Great tune with good lyrics and a great vibe.
Can I love this twice.
One of my all time favorite songs.
"I'll take everything you got"
Thanks for helping me through the hardest times in my life...
Jason and Amanda..
I have become such a fan of this guy.
One of my favorite songs, ever. Ever.
bought my whole family matching Jason Isbell shirts for christmas
What an amazing band, love from Canada!
Going to see this awesome dude again in June in Akron. Didn't catch him in Pittsburgh earlier this year. Would love to see him perform this. This will be the fifth time seeing him and he has never played this before.
Jason if you are reading this, lol, give it a shot in Akron!
You should be in luck. I saw him twice in fall/winter of last year and he played it both times along with a bunch of Truckers songs (Never Gonna Change, Decoration Day, John Henry, Manuel/Danko, and of course Outfit. Both shows he did close on thirty songs, then two song encore. Elephant and Codeine first time and Flagship of the Fleet and Codeine the second time.
Oh yeah, he played Dress Blues at both.
Still gives me chills...
Brilliance... All around! Way to go everyone.
Thank to the radio show "Sunday Morning Coming Down" I found you
Wow!! Everything I hear this song, it only confirms my suspicion....his voice and guitar work and moreover his lyrics.....Damn! !
When the band kicks in at 3:05 it's a soundgasm.
Yes.
heartstopping.

Shows his true absolutely outstanding playing
The best fucking version by a mile!!!!
Love this song so much!!
