Lyrics:
We'll take the copper from the work site
Meet me here at midnight
They ain't got a camera or a guard
Write my own prescription
If I can't get a fix, son
shit's about to get real hard
Molly don't believe me
Says she's gonna leave me
The kids won't even know my name
Put a gallon in the stepside
With a little help
by morning I won't feel no pain
Never thought I'd wind up
this far behind
Just a couple years back we had it made
I was emptying my bladder
on a 20-foot ladder
Should have climbed down and found myself some shade
The doctor took a quick look
I got out the checkbook
and left with a pocket full of pills
Now my back's still hurting
and I'm too weak for working
and I can't keep up with all the bills
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
and I'd hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore
I was all set up to do it
but some bastard beat me to it
Ain't a copper pipe left on the lot
Got a loan out on the truck
but I'm running out of luck
and the title is the only thing I've got
Molly's gonna leave me
Says she don't believe me
I got nothing left to lie about
She's going back to Bixby
Tired of trying to fix me
Says I got some shit to figure out
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
and I'd hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
I'd act like I was sleeping til she walked back through the door
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore
I'm a simple man. I see a Jason Isbell video, I upvote. This guy is one of the best lyricists I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
Amen brother!

That’s the damn truth
Oliver Anthony is better!!
The most powerful storyteller of this generation. The world would be a better place if more people listened to Jason Isbell.
More Jason Isbell, less Jason Aldean.
I always say that Isbell, Damien Rice and John Prine are the best contemporary singer/songwriters. Actually, perhaps of all time.
How does this sonuvabitch pack an entire Cormac McCarthy novel into a 5 min song/vid? F***ing brilliant
When it comes to being economical as a songwriter, Isbell has no equal. He can pack so much into just a few words.
He doesn't. But I appreciate that you are showing off your literary chops.
@@montysanojust stumbled across your comment today; I don’t think I’ve ever heard his work described better. You nailed it.
Nice. Love Jason and Cormac
a good memory of the natural truth
"She used to wake me up with coffee every morning"
what a dagger to the heart. if you spend your life with someone, you understand that pieces of life like this are what true love is made of, and the loss of that is shattering.
Yeah! That woman is expected to make me coffee. She's got nothing better to do than serve me.
@@DougLeppanenson, there are little things everyone does for their partners in life. It's called intimacy.
@user-vj4sk9yc7g
You're misguided feminism is truly missing the point here.
Just try to enjoy the song for what it is, not because of how you see things
Brian, what are you trying to say? Spell it out.
@@DougLeppanen
I just did
So many people talk smack about him online because of a statement he made that they don’t agree with. “Never heard of him.” “Your loss.” He’s one of the greatest songwriters
Good riddance
There’s a really good interview with him and he addresses just this. He’s doing his part to just at least change many conversations. JI is the real deal
It’s the one on msnbc
I don't agree with the man on every issue. So what. I do appreciate his music and respect his views and the way he respectfully makes his point.
Their loss
Jason is right up there with Springsteen and Mellencamp as a storyteller. Great job again, Mr. Isbell.
Hes better
DAMN, what a hymn!
It’s garbage
This hits hard - my wife is leaving me because I am a selfish addict who took too long to get help. I got that help and I am fighting like hell to conquer my bad habits, show her the man she needs me to be, and keep my little family together. Whatever happens, Jason's song is helping me through this, the toughest period in my life.
Keep fighting brother
I can relate, brother. My wife did the same recently. Take care of yourself first, and life will get better. I wish you all the best.
Do it! You can if you believe you can.
2:38 Sending you a prayer for strength. It's an uphill battle but it sounds like you're giving it a great fight. Best of luck to you 👍❤️
Best of luck to you man. That shits poison, you don’t need it!
I’m just going to say it. I think this might be his top 3 songs yet. I’ve loved it since the album dropped and I’ve had it on repeat for months but I’m not tired of it yet. I think in a decade we will treat this album like southeastern and this song will stand the test of time I think
The first time I listened to the album (the day it came out) my initial response was that it was pretty good, but no Southeastern. Having seen Jason and the 400 Unit perform it a few weeks ago, and having picked up new lyrics each time I listen to the album, it's definitely elevating itself each time I listen.
Weathervanes and Southeastern are really battling it out for me.
Love this!
Once again, Jason Isbell tells the story of the struggles and agony caused by addiction without judgment. His experiences create his lyrics, and I applaud him for his brutal honesty and poetic spin on the pain and suffering that happens with addiction. The loss of self, of loved ones. HUGE, HUGE, applause for addressing the subject often ignored- domestic violence. I work in this field, and highlighting the NDV Hotline and the Substance Abuse Hotline after the credits sent chills through me. Once again, he created awareness around difficult topics no one wants to touch or discuss. He is bold and brave! Like I needed more reasons to respect him!
Good money maker for him too.
I just wish the video was as good as the story writing in the lyrics. The video narratively misses the mark imo. It's just guy takes pills...guy hits wife (is it even his wife or is it girlfriend)...woman has enough and leaves...its really generic compared to the song.
I wouldn't say domestic abuse is ignored. I also wouldn't say that's what this song is about- although it's depicted in the video, the lyrics don't even hint at it. He does have a way with words, describing things in a way that even people in the situation would struggle to. Like in his song, Anxiety. Or Elephant. Or If We Were Vampires.
My kids turned me onto him right after he left the Truckers. I taught them well how to recognize good music!❤
How can one man write so many songs that tackle the hard life of working Americans' struggles without ever patronizing them? I continue to be amazed with his work. Can't wait to the the 400 Unit at Radio City in February!!!
Tell them to haul their talented asses over to Scotland sometime soon, brother…….👍🎸🏴🇺🇸
Oliver Anthony did it better
He's one of the greats, and although his art isn't patronizing, his Twitter indeed is.
@@utsurobune3530. Had never heard of Oliver Anthony…thanks for the heads-up….👍
I laugh anytime I see this. For some reason some group of fascists has decided that this should somehow be a competition of some sorts. Most of think Anthony has a great sound - including Isbell. It's not a culture war if you're the only one looking for a fight@@utsurobune3530
Another example of why Jason is the best in the biz. This one absolutely gutted me. Broke down in tears the 3rd time I heard it, once the haunting brilliance of the lyrics hit me. Bravo!
The quality of his song writing has gone way down. These lyrics could be any cheesy radio country song.
Good God, I'm sitting here nearly sobbing, listening to an artist that I wished I had listened to years ago. It just goes to show, even at 73 yrs. it's never too late to be moved by genius.
One of my favorites from Weathervanes and the video is a fantastic accompaniment. So great that there are still legitimate songwriters out there with substance.
I’m 62. Been rocking since my dad brought exile on main street home in June, 1972. 50+ years later I am amazed by today’s songwriters and their bands. I believe Jason is definitely one of the best along with his old band mate Patterson Hood, the Avett Brithers, The Lumineers, Hozier, The National, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtrey, Nathaniel Ratliff, Florence Welch, Jim James, Lord Huron, Marcus. Mumford to name just a few including Willie. His new album is awesome! And speaking of The Stones, while Hackney is not Exile, it’s damn good, relevant and a testament to their enduring legacy. 6 decades at the top! Yes- there is a lot of garbage in mainstream music. Whatever! There is so much great music available through modern technology that I am not bothered in the least by the garbage unless a kid rolls into the gas pump with it blaring. No worries- I just crank my tunes up, pump my gas and live and let live!
This is such a great song. IDK how Jason writes so beautifully. He's one gifted dude.
This song and When We Were Close are bar none the songs of the year, and those renditions live, Jason is speaking from a place that i know, this is connection. Salvation is only a step away, just one more day, one more, is all it takes. Thankyou.
Cast Iron Skillet is up there too
Like John Prine did with Lake Marie, Jason can put you there with relatable lines like "hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor". I felt like I was witnessing the passing of the generational bard torch when Jason opened for John at the Fox.
I've listened to that lyric "Nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore" dozens of times before seeing this, but that guy's face really drives those words into your skull. Bravo.
That line is standard depression talk. Nothing original. Feelings of worthlessness. Well known characteristic of depression.
That guy is Jason Scott, look up his band Jason Scott & the High Heat, you won't be disappointed
That guy is Jason Scott, look up his band Jason Scott and the High Heat you won't be disappointed
youtube needs reactions like facebook so i can laugh at that clown that's too lazy to create a proper username but wants us to hate jason isbell because of their little agenda.
@@DougLeppanenhipster ass opinion if I ever heard one lol. Straight up trying to divorce that line from the context of the rest of the song that builds up to it. It's about the "why's" son.
If media literacy was a class you woulda fluked out of kindergarten.
The best songwriter going today. He says so much in relatively few words.
The music video needs an award 🫶🏼
This is just so painfully real! How do people not love this guys music? This is the country music that makes me feel something!
Powerful message. 🙏🙏 for all who need healing.
Just phenomenal songwriting. The first two lines of the song tell you so much about the character without saying it straight out.
Jason Isbell is like fine wine. Better with age. My biggest influence hands down.
Awesome! Was really hoping to catch a glimpse of those home-made house shoes though!
How this song doesn’t have 200 million views is beyond me! Amazing artist and songwriter!
I only recently discovered Jason Isbell and it was when I heard this song for the first time. I'm now a huge fan. He's going to be performing near my hometown in June and I'm there, he's fantastic! ❤️🌟❤️
oh to be young again and in love with Jason Isbell’s music for the first time
Won’t watch now. Can’t cry at work. This song’s a killer.
Someone else stated on an Isbell video: "Jason says more in one song than most artists say in a lifetime. I agree.
The first time he played this song was in Atlanta’s Fox Theatre last December when he did a Q & A with the editor of GQ. It was awesome.
that shift visually to match the emotional shift when we move from the first verses to the chorus is just stunning
This man is unstoppable. Paving the way for generations
I wonder why he didn't have a team of people write this for him and film it in front of a courthouse known for lynchings?
😂😂😂
Funny. He definitely isn’t a Nashville puppet and neither is his wife. They are the real deal.
He’s one of the few people out there that actually thinks deeply about what he writes. Not many of those anymore. He’s a lot like Don Henley.
Not cliche, but leaves room for personal viewer identification. Doesn’t sugar coat the pain of the addict or the victimization of those who love addicts. Glorious work!
All cliche.
@@DougLeppanen somebody got roasted on Twitter...
Well, I just had a good cry.
Holy hell that hit hard being from Oklahoma and in recovery.
Proud of you! I know how hard it is.
I played this for my 7 year old daughter and now she works as a bartender in a honky tonk bar, chewing tobacco and cussin out truck drivers. Imagine when she turns 8!
Straight from the heart...to the heart of the matter. That's Isbell...
Man, we freaking love you and the 400, Jason. ALL of you, in front of and behind the glass. You are giving us the best songs we could have hoped for in a lifetime, and our lives are all the richer for it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Such an amazing songwriter and this song is even better live!
Damn... Looks and sounds all too familiar, and im allll too grateful i dont live like that anymore!! Thank You for the beautiful song, Brotherman!!
Jason Isbell is brilliant, and his voice has that ineffable quality that gets me where I live and cannot be learned. I've been hooked ever since hearing 24 Frames over a decade ago. This song and this video made me tear up, so now I'm gonna listen to some Disco for a bit of uplift...
Isbell is the best storyteller of this day and age. "Homemade house shoes" is an incredible illuminous detail
I have been obsessed with that mental imagery since I first heard the line.
He writes where my simple Southern Mind relates, brutally relate!
Fell off a platform after 37 years of accident free time and OT. Made me take a piss test, never did anything my whole life. Tore my Achilles tendon into and broke my arm in three places , went back to work in three weeks , mouths to feed. Such a good song.
Best song on the new album...
SO many good ones that I can't get over. Cast Iron Skillet, Death Wish, When We Were Close, White Beretta. I don't understand how this guy can put out such awesome songs one after another. He never misses.
@@ChristosKariolis Volunteer is another amazing one
I love Lost Dog. Ben cuts to the quick and Ashley is the heart of this group. I want to sit and have coffee on the porch with them. Thanks for your art.
His lyrics are unbelievably moving. He has this incredible ability to cut to the heart of it all.
This floors me.... just saw 3 ryman shows, this song is definitely one of his greatest songs ever...
Saw them in Austin when I was on holiday visiting from New Zealand. Probably one of their most far flung fans! Fantastic song.
You stay at the firehouse hostel that night?
Nah I stayed way out in some Air Bnb out of the city
Going to the show in Huntsville next Friday. Can’t wait to hear the new music live!
This one and This Ain't It will blow you away 🔥
All the new stuff is outstanding live. You will have a great time.
I'd pay to never hear this guy's music ever again
@@utsurobune3530 I can send my venmo
@@utsurobune3530 serious question though, is it because of his music or his politics? 98% of people that I know that have heard about him say they don’t like his music but say cover me up “by” Morgan wallen is a great song.
Very cool song, it reminds me of classic Neil Young done for today.
I lived this song. Much love from OKC.
I think this is best video you've done Jason..apart from your performance videos. Excellent. Acting is immense too
Jason's empathy for the human condition makes him such a great songwriter. Margo Price is along the same lines. Their songs enrich your life.
This song makes me feel something
I’ve lived this life and I’m lucky to have made it to the other side. It happens to a lot of good people. Be slow to judge
Jason proves that the most important thing for any artist, especially a songwriter, is empathy.
In case nobody has told you lately, you're doing a good job and I appreciate you
Somehow he added even more depth to this track 🤯
I saw this song live and immediately loved it. Isbell has a way with lyrics!
Seems like maybe a modern day ode to James McMurtry's "Rachel's Song". Either way, it's pure magic.
The song already killed with the story line, guitars, hell, everything. But the video really hits the desperation of life going in the wrong direction. Just damn…
This guy just doesn't miss. Love it.
Hearing a little vintage DBT here. Love it
Jason hasn't forgotten the struggles of blue-collar fly-over America.
Watched it twice. Interesting to see the perspective that one man’s decisions and addictions has ripple effects outside his own life and circle. Didn’t see that in the song. Maybe I’m wrong. Jason proves to be the best songwriter of this generation.
This song is just another piece among the millions of songs, books and movies on the topic. Don't get carried away.
True. It's among those, and there are a lot of bad songs, book, and movies. This isn't one of them, so I'll reiterate. Jason proves to be the best songwriter of his generation. Now go read an awful book, watch a "B" movie, and put on some Big and Rich or Florida Georgia Line and listen to some of those awful songs that I mentioned above. @@DougLeppanen
Such a great song. Love Jason’s writing. I also appreciate some effort in the video area. Well done.
She used to make me coffee every morning.. when she was alive our favorite song was elephant
Isbell's been reading my mail and got way too close to home with this one for me yet I love that he did so.
Jason Isbell is one of the best songwriters singers in the world today.
First time I saw Jason was on Austin City Limits some years ago. Hooked ever since.
I don't know why but the mix on this is amazing.
My favorite song on Weathervanes, and the most painful one to listen to. So well done!
Saw Him & the Band in July in Paso Robles Ca This song live is so powerful. Instant Classic
Such a lyricist. This video perfectly captures the hardships many of us road warriors are faced with.
Powerful video that does justive to a devastating and heartbreaking song.
Jason the King of Americana .
Idk if it is an Amanda Butters bias but, the way the bass line just rips through this song is so perfect.
So TRUE and SO SAD, very moving music video.............😪
Fantastic Artist and Song
Jason Isbell is a GENIUS!! Brilliant storytelling, fantastic singer, amazing guitarist. And the 400 Unit is Terrific!
❤. Can't wait
Hell yeah. Best he’s ever written and that is truly a statement
Your content is truly outstanding! - "Success is a journey filled with valuable experiences.."
A modern Bob Dylan mixed with Springsteen and wrapped in the storytelling of Flannery O' Conner...brilliant, poignant, and mesmerizing.
I love jason isbells music... i just discovered him, but he's very talented.
The Braum's wrapper is so Oklahoma.
YES!!!! I saw that too!!!!
Soooooo love this song!
This video is perfect for this song. Hits so close to home with me, but that was another life.
Man, that got to me! I was not ready for that! When you can make a fellow songwriter cry, that's powerful! Thanks Jason! Great song!
I'm from Oklahoma, this song, at least the parts about the pills, being broke, and copper theft, could describe a dozen of my old friends and more people I knew in passing. Sad but true.
Brilliant. What a powerful song. Damn OxyContin.
Amazing song ...
Premier songwriter of our time- and he and Sadler together on stage are like Betts and Allman guitar heroes.....WEATHERVANES is his best work to date
never stop telling the truth Jason
The song is fantastic, and the video matches it. Jason Isbell is the truth.
Just ridiculous how talented JI & the 400 Unit is
🎶 hurts so good
I was emptyin my bladder up a 20ft ladder. No other writer could string that together. If i envy anythin.from the usa, its isbell n the dbts.
Geez… I’m crying
Song gives me chills every time I hear it.
