Him, Tyler, Chris, Amanda, Hardy, Brandi...good time for songwriters' audiences. And I am just mentioning country and Americana. Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce, etc. Some intense songwriting right now.
When someone drops lines like "It takes a whole lot of medicine to feel like a little kid", you know that they genuinely understand their subject matter.
This is so gritty and real. So beautifully sad. “I don’t want to fight with you baby, but I won’t leave you alone.” Holds more emotion and disaster than I expected… chopping onions
The double entendre “I wanna hold her until it’s over” the power of this if you’re familiar with depression or living with someone with it… Is just remarkable.
When I listen, he’s singing about drug addiction, I didn’t even think of depression i’ll have to listen to this again with depression in mind but he’s definitely singing about getting high very very high. High til you die.😢💔🙏🏽🌹💫
@@kriscolvin8377 Its some of the only "country" that I don't find to be incredibly overproduced. Typically I hate the studio versions, but Jason and the 400 unit always seem to succeed.
@@kristinachaney7391 elephant, cover me up, and 24 frames are all incredible songs of his. of course, you can't go wrong with anything in the catalogue. He also is great live and there are some awesome recordings of live shows here on youtube.
Once in a while a song comes on that smacks you in the back of the head and makes you stop what you are doing and pay attention. Some musicians have something to sell, and some have something to say. Jason Isbell and the 400 unit just keep on giving.
That's what this song did to me today when I heard for the first time when he was being interviewed on the Bennington show on Sirius. How have I never heard of Jason....I've been with a woman like this in my 20s, we was a wreck together and this song hurts soooo bad and is so beautiful.
It's not mainstream. Not when you start a new record with this song. Hooked after one listen. The song kept spinning in my head. This hits home. A possibly legendary tragic love songs. Incredible.
I swear I've been playing this song like nonstop since I first heard it on the radio yesterday, because the feeling it evokes from the experience of trying to reach out to that one you love & yearn for but the pain is too much to bear like they're souls being tormented & there isn't a god damn thing you can even do about it besides feel powerless in every sense of the word...
I was lucky enough to be in the audience tonight and get to hear this song performed live for the first time. It's one of my faves already. Nothing beats Goddamn Lonely Love though. I was disappointed it wasn't played tonight, but the amazing performance of Cover Me Up just about made up for it.
FINALLY- a new song in the rock genre that I fell in love with. It's been so long. I sent this to my best friend and she said what is this masterpiece. Masterpiece indeed.
All I ever wanted was peace and security in a relationship. I only learned to look for it with self destructive partners. This song let’s me feel less alone.
I have five Jason Isbell CD's so far and the one thing they all have in common is no skips. I play them all the way through and he never seems to lower his standard of excellence. Pre-ordered Weathervanes the other day.
This is one of the most tragically powerful songs I have ever heard. Jason's passion and writing really hit home. I had a friend who couldn't get enough "medicine" or liquor to kill her pain. We talked endlessly, but...."there was nothin' I could say to her that I ain't already said...." I tried, we all did. I felt so helpless watching a beautiful, funny, intelligent, kindhearted woman slowly disappear into her powders, pills and alcohol. And then I moved away and found out a couple of years ago that she finally got her wish. Her Dad found her dead in her kitchen. I miss her. She was my partner in crime......my sister from another mother. I miss you Valerie.
Brilliant! The song demands your attention and stirs up emotions that we're either experiencing, or have gone through. In a recent interview, Amanda comtemplated if her and Jason were still in love. Jason revealed his heart and pain.
The BEST of a generation! And this song here is gonna be covered like you won't believe...This is a chart topper! It has that Je Ne Ce Quoi...I can hear this crossing genres...Amazing! You did it again Mr Isbell! Love you forever...xoxo
My wife and I have seen him at Red Rocls, First Avenue and The Ryman…this song would sound so good in a small venue. Beautiful layering and build between the musicians.
Have seen him every year since 2017 at Red Rocks. Double bonus he's coming back to Co to play at Dillon Amphitheater July 9th. 3,400 seat venue in the mountains.
What a tour de force...every line feels like a gut punch. The rhythm and beat is at a perfect pace...fast enough to push the song along but slow enough to not feel joyful or proud of what's going on. What a masterpiece.
"What's the difference in a breakdown and a breakthrough"--so well stated, and so much truth there. Jason Isbell taps into the human experience like no other songwriter.
It’s always a good sign when the first single released has an instant classic Isbell line that he and he alone could think up. “It takes a whole lot of medicine to feel like a little kid”. This song is really beautiful in its own painful way. I’ve no doubt that there’s certain folks out there that will break down each and every time they hear this song. Also, who else would release this song as a first single besides JI? Lol
My ex had a death wish, and she rly would climb on top of the shed while high. This was a long-distance relationship too, it put me in a personal hell that bubbled up after things ended. I came to this not bc I normally listen to country, but bc I couldn't get my death wish out of my head. Now I'm stuck thinking about hers instead. Good song, but tf were my life choices
This has been my jam since it came out, it's my soundtrack on my way to medical appointments. I was just diagnosed with severe inverse psoriasis that makes it hurt to move. I feel like I'm climbing rooftops every day and I can only wear tank tops in the dead of winter! I really needed this song, thank you.
It tears your heart apart. I'm sorry. I lost my youngest son to suicide a few years ago. His older brothers can barely think about it. The pain is unbearable. And it's all I can do. Just cry and silently scream. My heart goes out to you. I hope you see signs of your sister's spirit still with you. Signs and dreams help keep me going.
I grew up down the road from muscle shoals, was fortunate to be in the music scene and know a few folks. Rodney Hall let me hang for the dress blues session for sirens of the Ditch. I would run into Jason in Sheffield at jimmy Nutts Nutt house, when I was with Gary Nichols. The guy (Jason) had that captivating effect on me and so many since the DRIVE BY TRUCKERS. Had I not known he was such a good man with a sense of humor i would think he wasn’t very happy, but he’s just the best story teller of our time, since Dylan in my opinion. He’s been through it and rose from it all
I first heard this on Sirius, also, on Outlaw Country. I'm not too familiar with his music other than Cover Me. But then I heard Middle of the Morning for the first time this week and OMG. What a talented dude! I am a big fan now and plan to see him this summer in Lagrange GA.
The man took some of the most earnest vocals and lyrics since, well his last album, and built a modern day tone poem. The game has been upped, Who needs Loops and Trap Beats when you have Pros like the 400? Huzzah.
Is it the songwriting, the voice, the guitar or the guts to be that honest and vulnerable that is most admirable? One of the best in our generation.
The answer is yes.
It's the urgency in every lyric
yes

thats the best line for sure.
Very Well thought out
"What's the difference between a breakdown and a breakthrough?" Another great lyric.
First thing i though when reading the lyrics along with the song
Randy Newman
This song is going to touch who it's supposed to when they need it.
It's the only song I've listened to for 2 days, now.
And I'm still crying every time.
True to every single song this man writes..
Man, you don't have to call me out like that.
This song is the story of me and my daughter. I can’t hear it any other way. I’m just raw.
It already has.
