I know this was written about the feeling of isolation during the lockdown, but it really speaks to me as someone who dealt with depression (or rather, put off dealing with it), when people would say "you just need to get outside more, get some sunlight" and you just keep saying "I've tried!". And the lines about "I know you're scared of me" really remind me of how my wife had to deal with my inability to process my emotions, she'd talk about how she'd try to walk quietly around me when she knew I was in a bad mood. Then at the end of the song "til I notice I've been crying this whole time", just really speaks to the experience at least for me when I finally got help and was able to feel those emotions again. Just a killer song, can't wait for the album!
Exact same here
Hope you all are doing great. What did you do to get help?
Was the same for me and my first wife. Shitty feeling to confront, knowing that you've made someone feel that way.
Is there an interview or some other source you could recommend where JI talks about this song? Thank you.
It definitely resonates for me as well. I am 90% sure Jason has some kind of anxiety/depression disorder. It just fits too well...
Sometime between covid and nearly dying in an accident that took 3 years to recover...i fell out of touch with a lot of Isbell music. Im just hearing this and it's like a warm blanket on a cold lonely night.
Heard this on the radio yesterday driving from Minnesota w/ my uncle and it instantly grabbed my attention. I had to go find it and hear again. Best decision ever ❤
Kudos to his band for providing such a lovely backdrop to this sad story.
Nobody make me cry like Jason Isbell ❤
Oh my gosh. Same here. If We Were Vampires guts me every time.
"I'm tired of living in the moment and sleeping through the dream..."
Jesus, man... I feel personally attacked, or at least noticed in a crowd. This song rattles my soul and made my knees physically weak at that moment in that line... Two singles in and this is THE album of 2023.
My ex-husband passed away last night. He used to terrorize me. I have never heard this song until now. Brought back many memories. I wonder if my ex had these thoughts. I have so many emotions right now. I feel so bad for my daughters, but just knowing that the man who took joy in hurting me is gone for good is a relief.
Thank you, Jason for your beautiful lyrics. You are the most talented songwriter of this generation.
God bless you and your little ones 🙏
Wonder how he felt.
He is simply the best. ❤❤
The first melody line is obviously a nod to The Allman Bros.
Jason hits it out of the park again. He avoided “the sophomore slump”, “the junior slump”, etc.
This song will be remembered as one of his best - alongside of Cover Me Up and If We Were Vampires”.
The lyrics are, of course, sublime. He’s STILL at the top of his game.
Thanks for figuring that out! I knew there was something it reminded me of... He's even recorded it before. Fantastic sound.
Reminds me of Into the Mystic. In the best way.
I was reading this during the pre-video ad. When he singing I thought it was Midnight Rider for a split second.
I hear Son of a Preacher Man on that intro.
I can’t place the song this is similar to. Rolling Stones ?
Jason is arguably the most profoundly gifted songwriter of his generation. I love this man.
There is no argument. He is!
Me too
This is a well crafted song. Well done Jason.
Jason screaming into the mystic...as if leaning over a cratered canyon. Echoes emanating of lonliness, despair, hope, and a brighter tomorrow. The burdens of an unlikely prophet opening up to the world...shining a torch of truth Mouthpiece for those too timid or meek to speak. Keep yelling into the void, Jason...we hear you. 👂
Pretentious much?
Greatly stated.
What a great visual screaming into the mystic. He mesmerized me when I saw him sing this live.
@@LeevermayerBeing talented writer does not make a person pretentious
Love this
Love this guy and Amanda. They're the John and June of this generation. They speak for the common folk we all used to be. Always see them when we can.
Ope
Great lyrics, exceptional rolling drum beat and sweet, sweet guitar fills. Nicely crafted tune. Love it.
My favorite off the new album live!
It’s just such a great depiction of everyday life after coming out of it. And the guitar soothes the soul letting us know - it’s all gonna be alright
You can definitely hear the Shoals in this one! This album is already great. Thank you, Jason! Can't wait to see you at The Amp again this summer!
thought the same thing! his vocals remind me a lot of the appearance he did on Letterman with John Paul White, Candi Staton and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section
Cannot wait to hear more of this album. Between this and Death Wish, it’s gonna be a gut punch in the best possibly way. No one else writes like Jason right now.
Plenty write better than he does. Plenty.
@@markhollingsworth7362 Name one...go ahead .

8 months since your post and were you ever right-what an incredible album! I say this with caution but if Jason keeps writing songs like “Cast Iron Skillet”, “Deathwiah” “Middle of the Morning”, “Why Haven’t I”, “This Ain’t It” and many others he has written, he might ascend to that hallowed ground of Dylan, Petty, Willie, Springsteen, Prine and maybe a few others. What they all have in common is an amazing ability to tell a story with an economy of words and cast those words in music that so beautifully carries the lyrics. Amazing!
Nice of you to release this in the middle of the morning on a spring Wednesday
I introduced my ex to Jason's music and she loved it, we both did. Now his music reminds me of her, I hope she's doing okay.
That's the beauty and tragedy of soulful songs/singers - reaches your core and fills your up but can break you in two at the same time.
She's doin fine if she hears this. You should be doin even better. Free and clear now. Go for it!
I'm tired. Of stepping on your shadow, and feeling in the way.
Yes I'm tired. By the middle of the morning, I'm out of shit to say.
I ain't used to this, seein everybody's hand.
I was raised to be a strong and silent southern man.
I ain't used to this. A thousand days alone.
In my bed, or in my head, or in my phone.
This man must have a camera in our home.
First to comment just so I am!! Song writer of the generation
I've listened to EVERYTHING Jason has ever released. This might be the best one.
This song is amazing. Jason is so great.
Jason’s lyrics just grab you and don’t let go. I wish I had a drop of his talent in my writing.
Diggin the Van Morrison groove brotha! Silky smooth!
Isbell writes in a way that compells one to listen.
Not many have that gift.
In much the same way writers such as John Prine, Townes VanZandt, and David Olney compelled us, Isbell has the good fortune of being as talented a singer and musician as he is a songwriter.
I know if you’re here, then you already know Jason has made a career singing directly to our souls. This one not only did he sing directly to our souls, he shook the sh*t out of them. Only Jason can invite you in to share in his emotions, while knowing they are universally all our emotions. His songs have made me Happy, Excited, Content, Resilient, Hopeful, Sad, Lost, Crushed and Abandoned. This song the word Rattled comes to mind. Rattled by the lyrics and his vocals still reverberating through like a 1000 megaton blast to the bone. Well played Mr Isbell. We anxiously await what comes next and remain forever in your debt.
It only took one listen which is unusual for me with a new song, but for fucks sake it blew me away.Amazing lyrics and rhythm.
This couldn't be more relatable to us all!!! Jason, you are the greatest song writer of our time!! just beautiful and Amazing on all levels!!
Loving the Into the Mystic vibe
Hearing this live is like being shocked by electricity. Amazing!
Loving the seventies vibe to the music.
Just saw you in Paso Robles two nights ago. Was not very familiar with you, your band, or your music but what an incredible show. And your performance of this song, which I didn't know but just figured out by cross-referencing your set list, was absolutely stunning. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your tour.
Thank goodness for Jason Isbell. A real light in this dark room
Just got to get through 😢
That first little guitar riff sounded close to son of a preacher man. It’s very Muscle Shoals sounding. I love his analogies, an unattended child you can’t quite trust. I can’t wait for my album to show up.
That was my first thought, then also Allman's as another commenter said, then few minutes in, that etherial (steel guitar?) bit, that's just pure inspiration.
This dude is keeping it going man. Good old fashion dirty rock and roll.
Loving the Allman Brothers guitar tones. The cream rises to the top.
This song hit me in my heart. So much honest emotion. What a story teller.
How on God's gray earth does he only have 90k subscribers?
So talented.
I'm hearing Van the Man,what's not to like!! 👌
Good call - totally hear it.
Beautiful! You are on my bucket list for sure! Waiting impatiently for HBO special next month. 🇺🇸
Which special will it be??
@@malonemello6948 Running with our eyes closed April 7. The trailer looks awesome!!
Sometimes, a song hits at the right time and says all the right things. Thanks.
This has a definite "Reunions" sound to it, I really like the way these albums are going!
Love this guy.
Love this song ..listen to it over & over..
Another great jam. Awesome!!
The Last of his kind ✌
I stumbled upon Jason’s music about 12 or 13 years ago. It was great then and has only gotten better and better since. Can’t wait for this album!
Wow. There's so much vulnerability and honesty in this. It's amazing. Thank you for your work, and more for sharing it!
Holy smoke. Two tasters from "Weathervanes", so far. Both crazy killer good. Where is this gonna end...
Lovely Son of a Preacher Man vibe in the opening guitar riff
He has a way of making you think about it differently. This song may be about lock down but It definitely has broader meaning. I’m sure he knew that. 1000 days alone, in my bed, in my head, or in my phone. (My not be exact lyrics only listened twice). But that instantly made me think of my widowed mom who spends way too much time on Facebook and we are aways fussing at her for sharing misinformation as truth. She is just lonely/board. Now I’ve changed my plans for today and Im going to see her. This song got me in my truck and on way to carry 70yo mom fishing. She will tell all what is happening to fake people and how something in a product is changing peoples lives. But that’s okay.
Played this live last night was one of many highlights what am i saying the whole show was the highlight 1st time seeing Jason and the 400Unit
What an amazing song! Add it to the pantheon of outstanding lyrics and songs crafted by Mr. Isbell. It's clear this was written about the dissolution of his marriage in part due to his wife not trusting his sobriety
Two songs from this new album and man they are both killers. I used to (and still do) miss some of the more guitar heavy tracks but his songwriting is really making me forget about that.
My favorite Jason song since Nashville Sound. Damn it man, what a writer!
Wow! What a great song. Absolutely love it and can’t wait to see the band play it live on tour later this year.
What a beautiful song, great lyrics and melody, looking forward to the album 😃
Heard this song live and finally came across it here. Hearing it live is absolutely stunning.
Just dripping with an Allman Brothers feel - love it 🎸
Man, I'm feeling this one
Love this. Love the new music. love your music. I love your Devils. I love your angels. I love you never ending energy for creating new songs for you, for us, for the world, for whoever may stumble across you in the future, Somehow, someway, somewhere. Nice work!
Finally will be seeing Mr Isbell and the 400 Unit on the 5th of April Sydney Australia 5 more sleeps ,,,you bloody ripper
My dad showed me Jason Isbell when I was 8 years old, and I loved it. When this album came out I didn't expect it to be so good. To think, his most popular song was Decoration Day. The Drive By Truckers really shaped him.
We came here as Spiritual Beings to go through an emotional Human Experience. Because you can't experience that as fully in the spiritual Realm... And to allow those emotions to flow through us but not to get stuck, not to resist them or avoid or deflect them. If they do, it will reflect on the condition of our bodies. Because the body is the representation direct connection to source/Spirit.
I woke up at 5:11 from my friend's Cottage and went inside the main house and this song was on the radio.. totally meant to catch my ear❤
Exquisite.
man what I wouldn't give to be able to sing like that
I know exactly what you are talking about, I lived it also, and haven't come out of the other side yet
Fantastic song !!!!! Exceptional lyrics!!!!!!!!
Killer lyrics & imagery. Tasteful playing & production. Home run, Mr. Isbell!
Best line: "I know you're scrared of me, I can see it in your smile. Like an unattended child you can't quite trust". Yep...
Quintessential Muscle Shoals / Memphis guitar - an instant classic.
Simply a great song
Hell Yeah!
I dedicate this song the greatest scientist of our modern era ...Paul Dirac
Welcome to my neck of the woods Canby Oregon 6/2/23 Jason I cant wait to see you and the 400 unit perform live. Underrated is an understatement!
30 seconds in and this sounds like it will be another great Isbell song.

Absolutely wonderful song looking forward to seeing you in Melbourne next week
Hell yeah!! Love love.
I have seen Jason Isbell in concert many times and never feel a connection, but I still wholeheartedly believe that he is the absolute best singer/songwriter out their rght now.
blows my mind.....and yet calms it at the same time......LOVE!!!!
Wow, powerful song, like he always does it.
And there you have it 🥰🎶
Loving this song! Great work Jason and 400 Unit!
Feels to me like a SONG ❤
This is fantastic
Hot Damn. Mastery of his craft and in control of his powers. I love the challenge he issues with this level of writing. I gotta hit my own songbook harder, you know?
This is the most relatable song I've heard in a while. I genuinely appreciate all your music. It helps a lot. Keep on keepin' on😎
Powerful songwriting with exquisite guitar playing. Haunting, beautiful, and poignant. Instant classic. What a gift. Can't wait to hear it live at Red Rocks and San Diego this summer!
No better way to start this Rainy So Cal morning! Atmospherics I can cut with a knife...see you at the Greek...
Thanks!
Well, I've tried
To open up my window and let the light come in
I step outside
In the middle of the morning and in the evening again
Yes, I've tried
To be grateful for my devils and call them by their names
But I'm tired
And by the middle of the morning I need someone to blame
I know you're scared of me, I can see it in your face
I can feel it in the way you move around this place
I know you're scared of me, I can see it in your smile
Like an unattended child you can't quite trust
But I'm tired
Of stepping on your shadow and feeling in the way
Yes, I'm tired
And by the middle of the morning I'm out of shit to say
I ain't used to this, seeing everybody's hand
I was raised to be a strong and silent southern man
I ain't used to this, a thousand days alone
In my bed or in my head or in my phone
Yes, I'm tired
Of living in the moment and sleeping through the dream
I step outside
In the middle of the morning and the roses hear the scream
I know you're scared of me, so I never get too close
I just sit here on the tailgate like a farm hand's ghost
Watch the roses bloom, watch them wilt away and die
'Til I notice I've been crying this whole time
Well, I've tried
To open up my window and let the light come in
I step outside
In the middle of the morning and in the evening again
