  • Apple has a long history of famous and game changing products: The iMac, iBook, iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air, iPad, and Apple Watch to name a few. Despite their reputation for changing the tech industry with revolutionary products, Apple also has a track record for making some glaring errors and omissions. First generation products often have design flaws, lackluster software, and short lifespans. But you know what? That's OK!

I feel like apple just releases the first generation as bad as they are to test the waters and get feedback to improve their later generations, why do you think they rarely support the first gens for more than a few years?
And I thought the iPad (and then the iPhone as a result) was born because Steve Jobs got pissed because he was at some dinner party or something and a Microsoft exec was bragging about their tablet so much.

Isn't it more because they have to invent everything for the first gen and get to refine everything afterwards? Nobody was making laptops as small as they were (At least the motherboard) before the Air, the iPhone was so new the CPU sucked and it had anemic ram, but after they came out they could more easily develop everything else since they're in the open and people know of the products

    • @Thepsilam
      @Thepsilam 4 года назад +5

Hindsight is 20/20. These 1st gen products can’t be scored on what we know today. When those devices came out, yeah, they has some shortcomings, but they introduced new interfaces and from factors. As other have said, refinement comes down the line. But I owned the first iPhone and it was incredible device, even on Edge and no apps and wallpaper only on the lock screen. It was transformational, and as a user, you can see the path to enhancements and advancements, which Apple delivered.

@@tommys1678 The Pros are sweatproof, which is a huge plus.
But unfortunately, the Pros suffer from *huge* issues that the original AirPods never did...
My original AirPods had no defects. Their batteries are completely shot now about 2.5 years into their life, but they still work (mostly) as intended aside from rare connection issues here and there. My Pros, however, would always begin to fail the ear tip test with all tip sizes, and my left one started giving loud static feedback to my voice whenever I'm using transparency/isolation, and even the replacements had the same issue where both started failing the ear tip test and the left bud started suffering from loud static feedback to my voice while using transparency/isolation (and it's not like they gave me my same pair back, I handed my pair to them as they handed me my new pair). The Pros have major issues and are on the verge of causing Apple to face a class-action lawsuit kind of like the battery-slowing public case that became known in 2017/2018.
TL;DR - The original AirPods are such a good first-generation device, that they are free of issues that later models suffer from.

There are a good portion who would want to have Apple release products ONLY when they are properly and fully vetted!
And. At this point: Computers, lap tops, smart phones and tablets have already been invented unlike the first days of actually inventing the products. Companies like Apple have no excuses to release flawed "new generations" of the same products types.
Intel and ARM are architectures that have been widely used and Apple should do its homework and vetting BECAUSE of this 'new generation'.
We pay plenty for their products. No excuses!

Like steve jobs said, apple doesn't make junk. Sure, the MacBook air was compromised, but it wasn't inherently bad experience, especially vs the netbooks of the day. The idea of the MacBook air was ultimately the right one, nobody wants a compromised and bad product like netbooks, a well built thin and light was the way to go. Not cheap enough? The iPad does everything you'd do on a netbook but better, even in it's early iteration.

I hugely feel this way about the first-generation Apple Watch. No smartwatch had a higher screen resolution or could access half as many apps as the original Apple Watch could.
Moreover, I actually miss the days of the first-gen Apple Watch, as there are so many app developers that deleted their apps over time. I do love my Apple Watch series 5, but I really miss having dedicated Twitter app, Instagram app, and SoundCloud app, as they provided functionality that the WatchOS iPhone notification passthrough feature doesn't make up for with Twitter/Instagram, and that the WatchOS Now-Playing app doesn't make up for with SoundCloud.
Not to mention, WatchOS 1 and Watch OS 2 had more attractive UI across the board with transparency effects and 60fps animations for everything, while WatchOS 3 and 4 got rid of Siri's transparency effects, reduced the waveform to 15fps, and got rid of voice-feedback animations for it, completely butchering the fluidity of the Apple Watch 0 and Series 1/2/3. Even today with WatchOS 5 and 6 on the Apple Watch Series 4/5, while Siri got back its 60fps, voice-feedback-animated waveform, its all still on a solid-black screen with no blurred watch-face/app behind it. The Apple Watch launched in 2015 feeling closer to a micro iOS device than the 2019 Apple Watch Series 5 feels.

@@superhavi Well I remember the Ovi store, Symbian app store, but that came out after the app store, in 2010 according to wikipedia. I don't remember any store type for Windows CE. I'm sure you could sideload applications on WinCE but I think the concept of app store pretty much gets the most traction after it was used as we use it today on the iphone.

The 1st gen Ipad is surprisingly good for watching movies offline. The OS takes up way less storage which means you can get further on a 64gb first gen ipad than you can on a newer 64gb ipad. Couple that with weaker chips, discontinued network features, and a lower resolution screen and you have far lower power draw and surprisingly beefy battery life

I know this video is two years old but there is a few points to note, firstly a trillion dollars in the bank can buy a lot of talent, secondly it’s not unrealistic or unreasonable to expect Apple to get it right first time and lastly, the points you make Luke forms a caveat about buying first Generation Apple products, I have never been or will be a fanboy and it took 12 iterations of the iPhone before I finally opted to buy one , the last Apple desktop I used was back in 1987 and the one I went on to buy was in 2019. I’ve always thought that once iPhone and iPad were released they were behind the curve - I did own a second generation iPad then due to it’s underwhelmingness I didn’t go for another until 2022. So it won’t come as surprise to you that I won’t be first in line to buy an Apple wearable- maybe in 5-10 years time or maybe not at all. I find Apple price strategy borderline extortionate and in order to get anything close to what I expect I have to spend massive sums of money to get it, and I’m still a bit disappointed thereafter. Apple are not the worst tech company and they definitely do get things wrong but to repeat: a trillion dollars buys a lot of talent so why is it so unrealistic and unreasonable to expect them to get their product right first time?

Sometimes I don’t think that it’s because they don’t know what they’re doing on their first gen products. They also have to leave off features for the second ,third and so on versions. They’ll get to the faster chip or the slimmer model. Along the way, they’ll get better. But you can’t put all your best features on one device.,especially if it’s the first gen version. You have to spread it throughout different models.

I wouldn’t say they “sucked”. A better description would be that they aged poorly compared to what we have today. This technology was so new at the time, their products were highly experimental to see what their audience reactions would be. Nothing like them had ever been seen before in the market and Apple wasn’t going to go all in with features and design for a product that is more of a proof of concept. Brand new inventions are usually never perfect in their first iteration. After a company realizes receives feedback on their products, a smart company would continue to innovate and refine their products to make it even better, improve quality of usability based on user feedback and reducing manufacturing costs. A good company will continue to innovate their products by thinking outside the box. Staying stagnant with your products for too long will lose public interest. Not every first attempt is a home run. How many times did it take to make the lightbulb? And light bulbs have only gotten brighter and more efficient with time. New technology comes out and it is always a risk if it will stick with the public’s interest.

One could argue that most first gen products suck, not just those released by Apple. But it very easy to highlight a product's shortcomings with the benefit of hidsight rather than judge them in the context of what they offered at the time of release. E.g. so what if you couldn't set a wallpaper on the original iPhone, it was doing so many other things that at the time were amazing and people didn't even know they wanted wallpaper 😉 Great video though.

Apple admitted that they messed up with the 2012 Mac Pro with the thermal core, with technology not going the way it wanted to. It was designed for dual GPUs, but technology went into putting all the power into a single card, which meant that they couldn't update it.
All in all, I'd rephrase what you said about them not admitting their mistakes as "rarely admit to making mistakes".

I usually don’t adopt first gen Apple products, not willing to do the bleeding edge and pay the premium when a vastly superior product is usually available next year/year after which works out a lot of the kinks.
    First iPad was iPad 2,
Didn’t join the Apple camp for phones till sometime later, has iPhone 5 as my first and then been with them ever since, tried Symbian, Android and Windows Phone for a bit.
Same thing with Apple Watch jumped in the 2nd year with Apple Watch Series 1.
I was waiting for Dual Core on the devices to enable faster performance.
Would only consider first-gen at a significant discount and knowing what I was getting into.
I did buy the 2015 MacBook 12", it did exactly what I wanted, a light device that runs MacOS.
First wireless ear buds from Apple I got was the Air Pods Pro.
It really is about what you are looking for in terms of functionality.

Still wishing they would bring back the ol 12 inch macbook. Maybe with an M1 or M2 chip and a proper keyboard. As a writer i loved the Netbook era because I would keep one in my purse to have a tiny device with a real keyboard that i could just whip out and type up some prose when the inspiration struck. For years i used an adorable pink Sony Viao P netbook that is no larger or heavier than a regular womans wallet. Had to keep it limping along well past its lifetime with various flavors lf lightweight linux and would still use it today were it not for me finding and buying a GPD P2 Max that is also easily able to slip into my purse.
Like, I know people will say to just use a tablet or even the new base model ipad with a keyboard folio but its just not as comfortable or universally useable without a desk with thoae floppy back stands.

I still own many of these products 🤣 Is gen 1 perfect - no. But many of the issues were software based and got improved with updates and upgrades. And they make great hand me downs for the kids. Gen 1 iPhone and iPad are still kicking here - built like tanks and held up to kid abuse. I swear our iPad is on iOS 6, but it’s too hot to go look.
I continue to upgrade these devices - I find iPad releases me from my desktop more than a laptop. I’ve gotten 8 great years from iMac 2011 because of iPad (and strategic upgrades).
I’ve done the MacBook/monitor thing and probably will again when the Apple Silicon 13/14 releases. Working from home is making a laptop look more attractive for now, but I’ll probably only use it until the AS iMac ships. Luckily Apple laptops hold their value quite nicely.
