  • With the transition away from Intel and X86 to Apple Silicon and ARM, Apple has a chance to reinvent the notebook, like they tried to do in 2015 with the release of the 12 inch Retina MacBook. This is one of the worst MacBooks ever, so today we're going to talk about why it's so bad, what Apple got wrong over the past 5 years with their design, the role Intel played in pushing Apple to custom silicon, and how this transition will help put Apple back on the map.

    The MacBook 12" is my favourite laptop ever. I got the 2015 model when they launched and used it continuously until late 2019 when I bought a maximum spec 2017 model when I heard they were discontinued.
    The weight (920g!) and portability is unbeatable and far better than the 2020 MacBook Air which weighs 40% more. I love that you can pick these up and carry them around with 2 fingers.
    I absolutely love that it's 100% fanless and have never found heat or thermal throttling to be an issue for my usage.
    Honestly, who gives a damn about Cinebench on this type of machine??
    The 1.4 GHz 2 Core i7 on the 2017 model with 16 GB is powerful enough to run Windows VMs with VMware Fusion and is more than fast enough for basic dev work and internet browsing. It's the absolute perfect machine for travelling.
    I just replaced the battery in my 2015 model to give it away and hope the 2017 model I'm typing this on lasts many more years.

      Apple pitches these laptops as professional devices. Meaning someone who does video editing with programs that take proper powerful cpus will think “think laptop is good for my needs, it’s apple either way” when in reality, they end up paying more money for less performance. The thing thermally throttles when editing, rendering, working with 3D designing apps like blender and such, and I’d bet a laptop with the same specs that has a proper cooling system would beat it.

    • @hubert303
      @hubert303 4 года назад +6

      Gabriel Apple made no such promises about the macbook 12” - it wasn’t called Pro for a reason. The MacBook 12” was more than powerful enough for a huge section of users and I 100% prefer having a fanless laptop for what I do on it. I have a 27” iMac for anything demanding.

    I owned this laptop for 3 years, till I upgraded to the 2019 MacBook Pro last November. It wasn't a really bad laptop. I used to edit all my RUclips videos on the MacBook 12-inch (haven't uploaded video from my MacBook Pro) and it was not bad. But it does get really hot! Especially I live in a really hot tropical country. But I usually edit on an air conditioned place with a fan infront or underneath the laptop and it works just fine! I used to edit on Final Cut Pro X and a little bit of Premiere Pro and After Effects (although rendering would take forever if I were to use After Effects) but overall, it served its purpose well! 'till now its still with me and works perfectly (Except for the really loose hinge.)

    Honestly, you're harsh on it. I've had one in my 'fleet' since 2015. The 2015 was truly sluggish. The 2016 was usable. The 2017 is actually a pretty nice device. The m5/i5 version is the sweet spot in each year to run normal stuff w/o major throttling. In my pre-COVID business travel days, the 12" was a great carry on bag machine. My heavy lift machines are the 2015 15" that you're also fond of and a 2017 27" iMac. But, if I'm traveling, I grab the 2017 12" MacBook.

    I've bought one back in 2017 for college, the real problem is that single port used for literally everything. Mine hardly charges anymore and I need to hold it in a specific position to even charge it and the battery life is reduced by half now. My friend purchased a Mi Book for less than half the Macbook's price during the same time and that laptop still runs like a dream. This was my first MacBook and I expected much better quality.

    I got a speced out 2017 dual-core i7 model with 16gb of ram back in February and switching from my base model 13" MacBook Air from 2014 took some getting used to. The biggest thing for me was the single USB-C port, after getting a few adapters and a USB-C to lightning cable it ended up being fine for the most part. I've started getting back into programming in swift again and Xcode seems to run fine for the moment. I also started learning how to edit video with a 90 day free trial to FCPX, although it burns my legs under load and that I prefer using my iMac at my desk for heavy workloads it works just fine for my needs. I really love the portability of this laptop it's so small and light it feels more like an iPad when comparing it to a new 2020 MacBook air. The keyboard can be hit or miss but I have overall gotten a great experience with it so far... (the 3 key did get stuck while writing this funnily enough). Overall though I love this laptop and most of the hatred I had towards this mac was from what I had remembered when watching videos of this from big tech reviewers who hated this at the time, as they were used to their 15" MacBook Pros with a load of ports and this mac was obviously not geared towards their everyday needs. I do hope this mac makes a comeback and with Apples own chip they can mac this laptop perfect for the everyday person who isn't doing anything too intensive and especially students who need something small to throw in their bag that is simple to use and light.

    7:55 I want to go over a few things with what he said, and honestly think he should have put what I’m about to say in his video. The a12z was able to outperform the i3 and i5 models due to a few reasons, #1 I’m assuming they are benchmarking the MacBooks with these processors, but the chips thermal throttle, which means they slow down to prevent themselves from melting, meaning less performance. #2 you can’t really benchmark a x86 chip with a ARM chip, as they run of different instruction sets.
    Either way I think apple is doing a good thing with bringing their mobile processor to their laptops, as most people who use them are only watching RUclips, reading emails and such. And i would like to see how they will optimize their apps for the new arm based chips.
    These new chips will definitely solve MacBooks thermal throttling issue, as these chips use less power.
    At the end of the day the main goal for apple it to make the switch unnoticeable.
    There is a point I do want to make relating to arm and x86s differences, x86 processors are all around processors. You can do anything on them, while arm processors are specialized in areas which are important to the os.
    It's kinda like taking a screw driver set meant for repairing phones and tablets and repairing a car with it. Yes the screw driver set will be really good at repairing phones and such but falls apart on trying to fix a car. Their instruction sets are simpler and that's what results in this. There are so many margins of error when benchmarking processors.

    • @ZygmuntKrynicki
      @ZygmuntKrynicki 4 года назад

      As to #2 - yes you can. You can run industry standard tests that measure things like integer and floating point performance, regardless of the architecture. It's been done for years. Look at the power mac g5 announcement where apple does exactly that, comparing their powerpc with intel xeons using the SPEC suite of tests.

      It took ARM around 10-15 years from "complete useless garbage" to "a possible replacement for your low- to mid-tier device". I don't think we will see a possible replacement for those high end "I basically don't care about TDP and power consumption or price, I just need the most performance to plaster my server facility with because otherwise I'd have to build an additional one wich is WAY more expensive" x86 chips like the EPIC Rome from AMD in the next 10 years. There are already ARM servers available (by Gigabyte for example) but their selling point is still energy consumption to performance and MANY PCIe lanes wich is good for many companys that need only to run some low to mid tier stuff on it (like hosting a website, or the companys email) but not for there hollywood studios that buy 50k Mac Pros because it decreses their render time for a scene by half an hour and therefore saves them millions in personal expanses for one movie...

Also, this thing is a beast at Microsoft Word and Excel for when I have to turn in those overdue TPS reports. This was and still is an amazing tablet replacement and more.

    I had purchased the 2017 MacBook 12 high end model with i7 16gb ram and 512 ssd. I loved the form factor and was even fine with 1 thunderbolt. But the performance just wasn’t there. It can run super fast till about 5 minutes tops and would throttle and temps stayed at 100 degrees. So I had to return it but I love the compact form factor.

    My macbook 12" just lasted 2 years before it's logic board failed last March (stressful time!) Everything about my 12" mac worked really fine it was such a shame that it died on me so fast. My MBP 2012 still works until now and I have a new MBP 13" 2019 one now that I use for everyday work and other stuff. Informative video content thanks!

    Luke, please do not forget that most of the people that use that laptop require extreme portability to work in really simple apps (word, excel etc.). I have used one for two years quite frequently and never had any problems aside from the keyboard (bc it was the first gen(have the 19 inch book pro and the keyboard is amazing))

    The thing to remember is ARM chips started out in computers back in 1987, computers I used to program as part of my college education! An 8MHz ARM 2 could out perform every CPU available at that time in the same computer price ranges (£800 to £1200 for the computers) so every 286, 386, 680x0 processor and was 32 bit from the start, no 8 or 16 bit iterations. The OS was a stable pre-emptive multitasking OS and had a dock before any other OS had.
    The fact it has now migrated back to the desktop has brought the design full circle and as for the Mac Pro, server ARM silicon has been out performing Xeon processors for a few years now, combine that technology with A series innovations and the Mac Pro will reap the rewards alongside the iMac Pro.
    Both inside and outside of Apple, ARM has come on leaps and bounds over the last 20 years and it’s about time it took its place as a mainstream CPU outside of mobile devices, just a shame that Windows RT was the first mass produced and pushed “computer” device to use ARM, which really did more harm than good

    At work we’re running ARM Servers for our storage clusters. The CPUs are Cavium Thunder X2, a 32 Core 12 thread monster with 2TB Maximum supported RAM. That’s where I think it’s going for iMac and Mac Pro. (And that’s now an older CPU, I bet with new 5nm++ Apple can beat it handily
