Was The 12 inch MacBook Really THAT Bad?

  • The most compact and lightest Apple laptop isn't the MacBook Air, it's the 2015 MacBook that lead the way in how thin and light it was, and how much less volume it took up compared to other MacBooks at the time. However, you can't buy the lightest MacBook anymore as it was discontinued last year in 2019, but why was this ambitious thin and light laptop with no cooling fan canceled, and could it be making a comeback soon?

      The entire point of this particular macbook was thin light for word processing and light video editing why bring this macbook back when you can finally make the macbook air even thinner it makes more sense to thin out the macbook air rather then bring this product back and judging by Apples decsion to not refresh this product kinds proves the point

    • @txkingg
      @txkingg 4 года назад +17

      Alex Meek this device and the MacBook Air hit two different markets, whatever the point was for this one couldn’t be achieved due to the cpu being weak and cpu thermals being an issue, both of those are solved with arm. This is the reason it wasn’t refreshed.

      @@txkingg 12 inch Macbook wasn't about the price. It had better screen, new keyboard (that wasn't known as turd at the time) and it was completely silent. It was premium product, not the main machine but one for people who needed second computer to go besides their powerful one. Kinda iPad pro 12,9 with keyboard. Which, unfortunately, has brilliant technology inside but still has case made out of Swiss cheese that will bend into banana if you look at it sideways. One might think they do it on purpose to clear the path for new 12" Macbook ...?
      If they bring it back, I personally hope they will do the same and giving us thin and light premium computer running full mac OS. There's already everymans cheap Macbook and that is Air. Right now Apple is actively encouraging customers to not upgrade Air and keeping its price as low as possible. Apple offers 4-core i5 and i7 upgrades for Air but has cleverly equipped Air with such inadequate cooling solution that 4-core Air will whine like crazy even if you look RUclips videos on it. "Know your place, cheap peasant. If you can't afford Macbook Pro then i3 is enough for you." 🤣

    I was in the market to buy a refurbished 12-inch MacBook to use a lite-use, travel, laptop for simple tasks instead of carrying around my Pro. I saw SO many negative reviews on RUclips and almost didn't buy it because of that. I am glad I took a chance and bought a good condition one on eBay for a low price. I don't understand what all the hate is? I mean, it's a no-brainer that this laptop is not meant to be a monster laptop so I get why so many reviewers give it such a bad rating. Of course they wouldn't use this for content creating. I wish there were more reviews from ordinary people. People who don't need endless ports, don't want to connect to monitors, don't need to use a webcam. It would have been great watching a review from someone who gets that people literally just want a basic, beautiful, thin, and portable computer to watch movies in, check email and do some shopping. Simplicity at its finest. I am loving this laptop. Glad I took a chance at it.

    1. I still had a desktop which I used daily for more demanding work.

I actually liked the 2nd gen butterfly keyboard a lot (the sound the keys make are so ASMRish), and never had a problem with performance. I love the size factor of my 2016 macbook 12. Retina screen, no fan, no hotness, good performance, super light. I run multiple Safari and Chrome tabs, google docs, skype, zoom calls etc without much trouble. I don't even notice I carry it. The butterfly keyboard is shocking though. I have to forever dislodge dust from it, turning it upside down and banging on the keys with people looking at me funny and typing is utterly frustrating,. My space bar is constantly jamming up. The one USB port is awful and it has failed now on all USB devices and can only be used for charging and the fact I can't connect an external screen means I have to grudgingly buy an MBA. With a magic keyboard, a couple of properly functioning USB C ports and M1 chip this would be a beast.

    I love my 12 inch M5 2016. I use it for VMware and other power tasks with no issues, I selected it because it was fanless and super portable. You got 8GB RAM and 512GB storage too with the M5 vs the MBP13 or MBA 128GB! The biggest problem at launch was the lack of USB C accessories with power passthrough so it was too ahead of its time with 1 port. At launch the new Macbook Air actually makes no sense as was same weight and size as the MBP13 nearly (people bought the name) and the Macbook was still the true new MBA. Now the MBA2020 makes some sense due to price, keyboard, sloped design and true tone, but has terrible thermals. I also bought and returned the MBP13 butterfly as the edges cut into my wrists (maybe the scissor one will solve that).

So, I often carried 12" MacBooks because carrying 2 full size units is a drag.The 2015 was pokey. The 2016 was better. The 2017 is pretty darned good, and I still own a 2017. The middle tier of each year was the sweet spot between processing power and thermal performance. Your point about FCPX is true. It works. I had a Parallels VM on these, too. Giant spreadsheets? No problem. The Y series CPUs aren't barn burners, but they do cross the finish line. They were so much better than most folks gave them credit for.

    Please do a quick review of using it in 2021! How it works for basic work on Big Sue, would be awesome as there’s nothing like that on RUclips and there are still many of these around with the 8Gb/256Gb base memory and storage specs of what the basic M1 Macs have today. So would be very interesting to see..

    I’m still using one of the later 12” MacBooks, with a bit more power (1,3 GHz i5) and a later version of the butterfly keyboard.
    It’s an elegant, light, and utterly silent little machine that actually works pretty well for light computing. It does require some patience when switching between apps, there are times when I wish the screen were a bit bigger, and if I were typing something really long I’d prefer one of the new magic keyboards. But it’s insanely portable - to the point where it’s easy to lose track of in a stack of papers.
    And did I mention silent? Love the fact that it has no fan.
    And again, so light. One of my friends joked (fondly) about it being like a refrigerator magnet. Really it deserves the moniker “Air” far more than the current MacBook Air.
    I wonder if Apple will resurrect this size laptop? Seems like there would be room for such a device in Apple’s lineup if the 13” Air bezels were narrowed to allow a 14” screen.
    Thanks for the review!

    I own the 2017 i7 model with 16 gb of RAM, I got it in 2020, and it is my absolute baby. And I wish people would talk about the higher end ones, because this one is very competent. The 256 GB SSD is slower than the 512 one, and I own the 256 one, but looking for the Rose Gold with all the specs you desire can take a minute.
    I absolutely love how compact it is, the edge to edge keyboard, and to me is the best looking MacBook they ever made.

    I know it’s been 3 years since you did this video but I’ve moved over to using the 2017 12” (core i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD) exclusively a few months ago (in 2023). I bought the 14”, 2023 MacBook Pro Max and it was too big for me. Then I bought the 2022 MacBook Air and still felt it was too big so I pulled the 2017 12” out of the closet and I’m running Ventura as well as Windows 11 (through Bootcamp). This doesn’t have the blazing speed that the Pro or Air has but it is sufficient for my IT and development needs. I have no complaints regarding the keyboard either. I actually prefer it to keys with a lot of travel. Will be looking forward to upgrading to Sonoma when it comes out. Oh, i’m also running Parallels with Windows 11 but ended up going to Bootcamp so it could fully utilize all the RAM and CPU cores. Running Windows 11 in Parallels is a bit slower since I can only dedicate 8 GB RAM to it (unless I go up to the Pro edition). I do hope that Apple brings this back with either the M1 or M2 chip (and another thunderbolt port.)

    I loved my 12" MacBook - but as soon as I tried to edit videos, it became entirely impractical: absolutely zero headroom. I now have an M1 MacBook Pro, and it's a perfect compromise between performance and size. Notably, there are no keyboard problems.

    I think the 12 inch MacBook is pretty awesome. It was my first Apple laptop ever. I've had it for five years and it's still working fine. And the fact that its the rose gold version and discontinued makes it more of a nice little memorabilia. I've also just bought the 2020 MacBook Air and as Im typing right now, the first time I'm experiencing the magic keyboard, this is 100 times better than the butterfly keyboard hands down.

    12:26 972 grams of weight is incredible.I'm typing this answer on an Ipad pro 11 with Magic Keyboard right now, it weighs 1106 grams !
    I've always been a fan of laptops, but they have to be small and handy. My wish for the future is a Mac Mini for my desk, a Macbook 12 inch with M1 chip for travelling and an Ipad mini in the form factor of the Ipad Pro for in between.

    Late to the party here. I have a 2017 8gb, 512gb 12 inch MacBook and have been using it for 3 years as a desktop computer. It does lag at times after I go into certain websites. I do wish I had bought the 16gb ram but even the 8gb had a hefty price tag of $1499 and resale is worthless at this point. But, it still does the job for me and do not plan on upgrading until the Mac mini's have been around for awhile.

    • @paraphaseentertainment9549
      @paraphaseentertainment9549 3 года назад

      honeymilk Yes, it does. If you plan to use any intensive apps like audio or video editors, it will get VERY hot. Trust me. But, if all you plan to do is surf the web, answer emails, etc. you will be fine. This is because it’s an underpowered processor with no cooling fan. In my opinion, the iPad Pro is the way to go. Especially with Apple silicon on the horizon. Developers will most likely create macOS level software for the iPad. That’s what I’m doing. Hope this helps!

    • @honeymilk4622
      @honeymilk4622 3 года назад

      yeah i know but what if you use it for too long like 6hours non stop ? will it get overheated or not

    • @paraphaseentertainment9549
      @paraphaseentertainment9549 3 года назад

      honeymilk Again, that depends on what you are doing. There are a lot of factors. I will say that I have seriously put this thing through it’s paces; and it’s still going strong. I edit video and audio all the time. Very CPU intensive stuff. Sometimes I thought the thing was going to explode. If you do simple stuff for 6 hours, then it will just get a little warm. Honestly, I wouldn’t buy this now with new macs on the horizon. They will most likely be significantly cheaper and more powerful since Apple won’t have to pay Intel $300 per chip. Food for thought.

    I have one. The very first rose gold MacBook. It's very thin and light. My first Mac ever. I'm just testing out how MacOS works 'cause I've been a Windows user since the day I used a computer. So far, I'm lovin it. It's easier to navigate and it's more user-friendly than Windows.
