"The rumored Apple CPU" well that took too long...

Not disapointed
@@HichC521 sure why not
Still disappointed because Intel has no comeback and we might end up with apple as a fat monopoly
eyyy thumbing you up in 2021 lol
for real though been looking at the 2017 12-inch macbooks on ebay since they're still quite usable today for the price and the I/O makes a lot more sense in 2021.
If Apple put an M1 in the exact same design as the 12” MacBook I’d be first in line to buy it
"Lenovo and Asus managed to make a device this thin without removing all the ports, why couldn't Apple do that? Great question! Moving on!" Hahahahaha
+John Connor IKR
+Jacob McKee Apple always pissed me off with their 'sleek and slimline' minimalist approach. My 2013 MBP has 2 USB ports...and only one is USB 3.0. Fucking really?
And they market this shit towards 'professionals.'
+John Connor Greatest part of the video!
+John Connor Answer: Apple couldn't pay enough.
+hof8231 They're actually marketing to what real people call 'idiots'.

You can get it on Amazon much cheaper but yeah it's a bit expensive
a bit? ahahaha
A little bit more of a bit
Runs out of battery because you can't charge it while using a flash drive.

Honestly this one is the best gaming laptop that I own. It's run minesweeper flawlessly, I only experience fps drop from 60 to 50 a couple times.
It can even run a game boy version of Pokemon! This should replace my gaming PC which is like half the price but five times better!
Duckstalker1340 this laptop is good for running pong.
Seriously though I can run like really intense games in this thing. Apple let me play really intense online games in their store.
I know this is a sarcastic comment but still, nobody will try to use this to play games.
Why are you people always trying to shit on a product when it doesn't run crysis on ultra.
My vacuum also doesn't run games, but that's not what it's for.
No, pong is too heavy for this, it runs about 10fps.
Tablet without a Touchscreen? Who would want that!
in this video there is no tablet
You obviously haven't seen the the whole video....
DJJumpdancer Linus did compare the Macbook at 8:26 to a tablet whose touchcreen was stolen and replaced with a keyboard while it wasn't looking.
Maksym Hoyda Thin early-2000 laptops were called tablets. Look at the IBM Thinkpad T40
DJJumpdancer the hardware in that laptop is from the ipad..
Great question... Let's move on! (Completely ignores question.)
Hi
:P
I laughed at that so hard
@@thestory3949 what’s funny?
The biggest failure of this product is the price. It just doesn't match the product and what you get for your money. It's a cool laptop, for sure.. but it's not worth the ridiculous premium Apple has greedily tacked onto it.
Get it on Best Buy for 999 on sale now
+Anton Zuykov "priced for people like you", probably, see he actually knows what he is getting for his money, and not blindly buying obviously overpriced products.
***** My PC works just fine, maybe people should stop buying crap PC:s like HP or some other cheap crap.
+Tick Tock and honestly, I think you're right. The amount of engineering and even the price for the materials to be assembled isn't that high. So the price defy isn't justified.
+Anton Zuykov Apple sucks. Deal with it. The new MacBook is a shit hole of a laptop. My Toshiba Satellite is a lot better because it actually has All the ports you need and better storage. Fuck you Apple for only putting one measly port on this thing. Toshiba FTW

It's funny to come back to the video now that the M1 has been released and has impressed Linus as much as it did.
"But this is the same company that put a microphone on the BACK of an all-in-one PC so I guess anything goes around there." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Jonathat Morrison just called you out on your BS. Checkout his response video which he backed with proof unlike Linus.

You ever hear the tragedy of earth plagues the wise?
So why on Earth would you buy this over the 13" macbook pro? Yes, the pro is slightly bigger and a half a kilo heavier. But it's not like the pro is unwieldy, you can carry it with you just as easy as this one. And you get a lot more computer for the same money.
TalesOfWar I guess, if you fly a lot and only use the computer for basic tasks. It just seems silly to me to trade half the computers performance for half a kilo. And maybe I'm biased as I personally need the performance and the extra weight hardly makes a difference.
ybra I know someone who upgraded from their ~2010 13" pro to the new Macbook. They didn't need lots of power cause the only work done on it was typing and research based and otherwise it was facebook and youtube etc. They bought an iPad and ended up giving it to their dad because it wasn't any use for doing work on.
I also have a friend that got a 15" pro because they do a lot of CAD and stuff, and though it's a nice machine it's too big and weighty for me.
Upgraded air would be what I'd go for, something powerful enough for some Lightroom/Photoshop but also pretty portable. I hope they upgrade that line.
TalesOfWar Your argument doesn't make any sense. People who travel or fly lot always put laptops in carry on baggages, the weight of which most airlines don't check at all. None of the airline would care if your carry-on is 0.5kg heavier or lighter. And frequent travelers tend to carry as few things as possible. Carrying around a usb-c adaptor is a absurd. Macbook is a joke. It is only useful for Apple to extend its product line. It is created for poor and crazy Apple fans, most of whom can afford nothing fancy in real life, but only some cheap electronic devices like Apple products.
Dilly Vue But that is the point, if that is all you need from your computer than there are plenty of much cheaper alternatives. A chromebook seems fit your needs and will cost you a third as much.
Dilly Vue "MacBook has a faster processor"
No it doesn't. The new mackbook have a Core M CPU with 2 cores at 1.1GHz. It got about the same performance as the new iPhone (which even outperformed the macbook in some tests).
You get the same performance from chromebooks and windows laptops that are much cheaper.
My point is, if you want a laptop for youtube, movies and facebook, there are plenty of much cheaper options. And if you are looking for performance, just get the 13" macbook pro which is twice the computer for the same price. Not to mention it actually have ports, should you which to connect it to anything.
I don't understand why people buy this crap. by crap, i mean most apple products
Jon Luna obviously its not crap
Some of them aren't crap, but only the ones that cost over £1500 and you still pay £1000 to £1500 over their component and build price for.
***** but it is
+TheRebel3000, so you are expecting a company to deliver high quality and reliability on their own cost, so they basically make no money? It's always cheaper to buy the components yourself, but i dare you to try and build something like this yourself, you know, come up with a housing, battery design, try to figure out how to put that screen in there... This is not like "building" a pc tower by yourself where you buy the parts and plug everything in the right hole and have still space to put 4-5 cats in there, with room to spare.
Jon Luna I think it's due to style but more of a "trend train"

One port? Have fun buying all those expensive cables from apple. Oh, don't bother third party cables, apple probably banned those already...
RYLAES you can't ban 3rd party cables if it uses a standardized connector. I'm sure if this is possible, then every other macbook with hdmi, sd, and thunderbolt would all have to be from apple.
Learn your facts before you make stupid comments.... *smh*
You play Dota? Team secret logo
RYLAES I see what you meant. Yeah, probably those 3rd-party cables either don't work with Apple stuff, or they don't work fully. Apple is proprietary when it comes to cables.
iamterence77 What he said does have some reasoning behind it. Apple is, hopefully by now, notorious for making products that are only compatible with their cables which are extremely overpriced.
"Great question... moving on."
I lol'd.
fits my needs, dont need ports. just need a beautiful display, portability, word processing capability, bluetooth, and wifi.
Orlando Get a Chromebook for a fraction of the price and use the rest to pay off your taxes.
Cool Cool Uhm no? Chromebooks are cancer
Gerardo Ricciardi They do as much as this Macbook can. You can barely edit on these Macbooks, which makes it utterly useless for anything else other than web browsing, word processing, etc. You can do all these things on a chromebook, which costs a fraction of the Macbook.

This would be acceptable if it cost £500 or thereabouts, but instead the base model costs £1049
Omg this laptop is just a money grab
It's more expensive than a MacBook Air.
The design looks terrible everything is too close together and you need adapters to plug in any USB devices.
WTF
its on offer for £899 in the UK
+Jordan Thomas I think its designed really well and looks aesthetically pleasing but it doesn't pack a lot of power and there is only one port. With the new version being more powerful that is much better although its still not a workhorse but with the one port and the 480p webcam i'll wait till the 3rd gen to see if they upgrade it and add in some more ports.

Wobbled why couldn't apple do that? great question ! moving on- Linus, 2015
Wobbled Because there are plenty of retarded consumers that will happily buy whatever Apple sells, just because its Apple.
Patrik Rud-Olson Nice use of the word Retarded...since most of apples customers are affluent well educated white males.

This is by far, the most entertaining and informative review I have had the pleasure of viewing. Bravo Sir... Bravo!
3:09 "Great question. Moving on..." I love this more than I should.
One legacy usb port could have solved allot of problems.
BlueFoxTV Yes it would.
BlueFoxTV backwards thinking, that what they kept saying about all stuff that's new. Someone has to take the leap of faith. Wait 1-2 years and all laptops will look like this.
It's going to take a lot longer than that to phase out mice, flash drives, USB headsets, etc. Hell, we've still got SD card readers in many laptops and Apple tried to get rid of those years ago. There are just too many impotant things that require ports.
annespwnz I highly doubt all laptops will look like this. Having usb-c: yes. Only having one port: not going to happen.
Because they want a device that doesn't require constant upkeep, scanning for virus and malware. They want to be able to adjust System Preferences quickly and easily and not have to wade through five menu clicks to get to something. They want their phone to work well with their tablet and their laptop and their TV, seemlessly.
As a heavy Mac user (but Windows developer) I'm pretty impressed that you've reviewed this objectively and haven't resorted to the hivemind mentality of slagging off apple because it's the cool thing to do. Your reviews are continuing to impress me and the Macbook 12" is nothing short of a joke for me in the most part, but you've covered some aspects of where it works and that gives your reviews and opinion a hell of a lot more weight. Keep it up man.
Love the screen ratio and the way the keyboard is filled out to the edges , can’t deal with the lack of ports though .
I guess if you just need to browse the internet, send emails and watch videos, this is a good choice for a premium feeling product, but having the gall to charge so much for a computer that can do so little really inspires resentment. Especially when the reason for removing the missing capability seems so arbitrary.
Might as well get an iPad air/mini or the iPhone 6s plus.
I honestly don't understand what target group this product is for?
The Macbook Air gives you more for your buck and it's also very light and portable.
Nah, this Macbook is only a complete waste of money
Stefan Landquist The only stuff I've got problems with are the single port, I mean they could've used 2, and the lack of a touchscreen... From what I've read around, the core m really holds its own... :)
+M. Mitra Yeah the single port is a big issue. The only good thing I can see with this thing is the flash memory and the retina-screnn, but it comes at a very high price.
I can't see any reason why someone should choose this one over, for example the retina Macbook Pro 13-inch. You get more ports, better GPU, faster CPU and so on.
I hope the next generation of the Macbook have more to offer than this because portability is not everything..
Stefan Landquist The next gen will probably be a lot more refined... I hope... I'm gonna be upgrading my old HP around 2 years later tho, so Apple's got some time to get their shit together ;)
that carbon fiber skin under on that mac looks fresh af
It's a complete waste of money, and if you don't think the laptop is a waste, that's fine.
Just look at the price of the cables and tell me how they are not overpriced. Since you will need them.
Validifyed You know, there's not as much profit in the actual product as you may think... The profit always lays in the surrounding products... Cables, batteries, chargers, etc etc.
That's why they cost so much.
Forcing people to buy surrounding products like this is a great way to make profit, assuming people are stupid enough to buy the actual product.
z1mt0n1x This is shitty and kinda anti consumer by forcing your own psuedo monopoly but its true.
If you look at similarly powered Samsung laptops, you'll find that the Macbook Pro can offer some benefits compared to it, (although they're both overpriced) but this is a money-waster. Its a cool idea, but like the Dreamcast, it's too early for its time. In later years, I think having one USB type-C connector will be fine. But this is the present apple, and USB is still hugely important.
z1mt0n1x "You know, there's not as much profit in the actual product as you may think..."
You are obviously clueless about how high the profit margins on these apple notebooks are...
Christoffer Nørskov I'm not clueless, I've sold these products mysellf.
You forget that Apple spends more money on time than the components put inside, stealing pattents or making new ones, hundreds of lawyers to battle the competition, etc etc.
You can't just concider the hardware into your calculations...
This was most definitely a funny and very interesting video I've seen thus far. I might be a bit late but I really enjoyed this video, so yes I will subscribe! 👌🏾👍🏾
A video of linustechtips a day keeps me happy every day.
Mine has lasted 7 years and still does the job. So yeah. Totes worth the cost over 7 years given how small and light it is.
I think it's a bit arrogant to think that only CPU intensive tasks are important.
This computer is about portability and endurance above all.
If you want ports and proper performance, then Apple will happily sell you their 13 inch MacBook Pro for around the same money.
😂
No no hes got a poinf

Andrew Kritzler Mine does.
Andrew Kritzler I meant iPads after iPad 1.
this laptop nice
So if that USB type C connector runs at the old standard 3.0. Does that mean if Apple uses a 3.1 version, would it charge the notebook twice as fast? Or does this only affect transfer speed of data.
Lol
3:05 "Great question! ...Moving on." I love that so much. It's somehow so much more satisfying than the most detailed rants about the ports on the MacBook. He's just like, "This is bullshit. *drop mic*"
Probably the best review I've seen of this device! Had to decide between this and the MBP 13", and ended up buying the MBP mainly due to the single USB-C (my fear being, if the 1 port breaks due to wire trip, then you cannot charge the device). Oh, and the CPU throttling scared me a bit..
That butterfly keyboard...
I think I have the weirdest use for a 12” MacBook. I am a massive power user, doing CFD and math code all the time, so after a lot of tries I’ve realized that no laptop is gonna run those calculations for me in a reasonable amount of time. So, I have a 24 core quad-GPU monster at home running all the time, and this tiny MacBook with teamviewer to work from anywhere. And just to see the people’s faces when the see me run ANSYS on this tiny cute thing. Btw it is the most awesome looking piece of tech ever !
Almost 200k views within 8 hours? derm this channel has grown. good job mate.
"Great question!, moving on!" i laughed so hard XD
I like how hw says: Numba TWO!"
I just don't get why people think everyone is a power user. The only thing I can argue with Apple about is their prices; not their actual functionality.
If this notebook was priced at $300-$500, I'd easily buy it because it works well for pretty much any basic task you could imagine. If I want to be a power user, I'll use a desktop. I don't need a powerful laptop on the go especially if I have a desktop to work at comfortably with a mouse and [better] keyboard.
But alas, I seriously can't complain about anything Apple makes besides their price. If you argue about anything besides the price such as functionality and their operating system, that's completely opinionated and is your own personal bias.
What if I want to use a mouse? What if I need to use a USB drive? Even simpleton users use certain features, and Apple's ludicrous pricing of adapters and one port destroys the usability of any USB device.
Everett Lee You don't need a mouse if you're on an airplane, out at a subway, blogging, researching, or simple editing. In time, so may computers will adapt to this USB-C and become just like this notebook. Notebooks are supposed to evolve to be more lightweight. If you want a portable computer that has USB ports, ethernet, HDMI, etc.; get a MacBook Pro.
+Everett Lee It boils down to personal preference. The thought of using a mouse with a MacBook is absolutely ludicrous to me. If you need a USB mouse (Bluetooth not good enough?) then this is not your kind of laptop to begin with.
+Iain Bradbury Yeah, you can use a mouse with bluetooth, but how about headphones, which don't even use a USB type connector. Yeah, you can buy yet another adapter, but what if you want to charge the laptop too? I guess that it could work for basic users who only need to work with a a charging port and touchpad/keyboard, but then the Dell XPS takes the cake, or Zenbooks.
+Everett Lee While the Macbook has a 3.5mm headphone jack I don't use it. I use bluetooth headphones.
one small thing in osx i like is when you start moving around the cursor to find it and you cat so you start moving it around a lot, it makes the cursor really big.

I look for form AND function when looking at devices. I'm one of those people who used Windows their entire lives. I consider myself a mid-level user, who does more than just browse the web, but not a super hardcore gamer or multi-media creator. I've found some Apple products will do the job I want them to do without the hassle I've found in Windows operating machines.
I still can never justify that cost though, it's the one downside I truly see to Apple products. Even when comparing for quality over quantity you still come up short, paying for a brand logo I guess. Same reason people buy any name brand product versus a generic.

I REALLY liked this video.
It's sooo hard to be objective while reviewing an Apple product 'cause it's easy to fall either in to mindless fanboyism or negative rant but I think your review really nailed it. The conclusion sentence was brilliant and I found myself clapping at the end of the video. Good job man
[this was gonna be just a normal comment, but turned out to be something of a mini review/personal experience report for the 2016 version of this Mac]
I’m impressed. This was a surprisingly elegant and honest review of this machine. I have the 2016 model, which is basically just a slightly boosted spec version of its predecessor, and I am honestly blown away. I completely agree with the iPad analogy too, I described it as “a 2017 iPad Pro with an additional 4gb of ram, and a keyboard slapped on it” and I feel there’s no better way of putting it. It is just a powerful iPad packed into a laptop experience, and boy does it do a fantastic job! It NEVER bottlenecks or gets thermal throttling, which is impressive for a fanless CPU laptop, it never even comes close to using up all of the available 8gb of ram, and it is all around very capable. I’ve been able to do screen recordings, basic iMovie editing, lots of photoshop, and even some more CPU intensive stuff with Logic X Pro; I wouldn’t recommend it for Logic projects with many software instruments, especially Alchemy or similar synths, or just channels with lot’s of plugins, but it handles input monitoring nicely, and never overloads the system. Finally for those whom are familiar, it plays old school RuneScape flawlessly (then again so does a toaster), but it also handles runescape 3 with relatively high settings (ultra draw distance, shadows, textures etc...) Although things do fall apart a little when trying out maximum settings all around. Honest opinion: 9/10
should you buy this?

Whoa that wrapping looks amazing
I was thinking about it, as part of my next gen apple line-up but the keyboard and touchpad seem to feel a bit weird/uncomfortable, if you come from one of the "regular" MacBooks. So in the end, I guess, I'll go for the Retina 13 inch. Same screen, but a lot more powerful, despite being a bit heavier and bulkier
I'm a freshman in college and I love my macbook I do hate the camera and the 1 port can be a problem if you don't carry a USB port but the battery life is great and it can basically do anything aside from hardcore gaming and video editing
*hardcore video editing. Macbook even handles video editing pretty well for what it is..
I'm going on year 5 with my current macbook. I've gone through multiple windows os laptops and pcs and they never lasted more than 2 years... Some crapped out entirely after a year.. and others slowed down to be unusable after year. My macbook is still as fast as the day I bought it. I don't get it? I would rather have a windows pc bc of their program compatibility options but dang son they slow down quick ass hell. Whats the deal? Obviously I'm not the most computer savvy fellow... Why is my macbook still solid after 5 years and my last 2 dells and 2 hp's lasted about the same amount of time? ( 4 computers in 5 years)
Because you are conflating windows with pcs. Windows can't have control over the hardware of other manufacturers. So, the user experience varies. Apple has tight control over all their hardware. If you want a similar experience on windows, go with an in house device. something microsoft makes themselves, such as the surface book or surface pro 4
Whoever did video editing - excellent job on this one.
"Great question. Moving on." Haha! That was great.
2:55 "But Linus, I wouldn't need any of that adapter stuff if Apple just included a magsafe power adapter and a couple of standard ports on it. Lenovo and others managed making a laptop that thin and still fitting ports on it, why couldn't Apple? Great question, moving on..."

***** And alot more expensive
Double bow and no touch function
Double bow thats true ^^
***** It's only a bit more powerful than the iPad air 2 with the A8x chip. If Apple just added an extra core and more RAM to the A8X, it would probably be on par in performance with this with similar power draw.

If it can do all the high ones, maybe they should start putting those (without power and normal usb use) on graphics cards, then you can just run what port you want with an adapter :P
WikHellfire - PlaystationShare Since it's only USB 3.0 5Gbit/s speed nothing of this. DP 1.2 has like 19,6GB/s bandwith, this is not even close to that
***** He wants to know the hz so he would know how much fps the conected display can show.
***** Hz means cycles/second, which doesn't have to mean refresh rate, it can mean the supported max frame rate too I think
WikHellfire - PlaystationShare Well considering they only sell HDMI right now you're only getting a max of 4k 30Hz. But Since it is USB -C it is compatible with display port 1.2. So when they come out with a USB-C to display port adapter you'll get 4K 60Hz. More likely you'll get a USB-C to Thunderbolt though to plug into monitors that have thunderbolt...
***** judging by the way you talk, im not going to continue this argument
I have a friend with one of these...and that last line described him as a person perfectly😂
Im not watching your videos for the reviews, Im watching for the laughs. Omgee, YOU ARE SO FUNNY. I was cooking in the kitchen while listening to your vids (on playlist) on my MBP and you are brilliant. kekekeke. Awesome reviews tho I might not agree on some :P. Good Job!
P.S that Starbucks comment freaking happened to me while I was charging my phone! :C
I seriously wonder if anyone is actually stupid enough to buy this thing..
Animiles
Yes.
*****
I doubt it
Animiles It's for people who need insane light quality laptop..
Medieval Blast
for those who need insane light laptop, are super rich and don't care about performance. And then they still need to like their OS
Animiles They sure will. It's Apple. They are masters at exploiting human psychology.
Is this is Linus's first macbook review?
mbsfaridi Besides the iMac Retina 5k review, yes.
Zac Cain So this is his first macbook review. I wasn't sure though. Thanks!
No problem.
mbsfaridi no, he did a review of the 2011 one (i think) and he compared it to a asus laptop.
I don't think so, all I can find is that he did an unboxing of the original Macbook Air 2011, but not a review.
10:20 had me laughing for a good few minutes. Best summary ever describing the typical use case scenario for a Macbook owner.
Amazing review! loved it.
Apple recently released a new vacuum, the "iVac" it's the first apple product that doesn't suck.

The apple rumored cpu... i dont think you could have said it better.
This video is particularly funny. Way to go Linus
just realized this came out on my birthday, nice
I call this thing "the x86 iPad with keyboard case"
2017 Update: good boost in performance, serious improvement in the keyboard, and still-shitty webcam. Lack of ports is annoying but this thing is just so much fun to use that I just don't care! And if I need the power I can just remote control my home PC.
Also, installing Windows is WAY easier. All you have to do is download the ISO and Boot Camp does the rest. Didn't need to use any flash drives.
Great review, and while I disagree with some of your points about workflow (The things you usually work on with your computer are much more CPU-intensive than the run of the mill 12" laptop buyer's intended workloads), the single USB-C connector is and will remain a terrible idea for a long while, at least until USB-C becomes more standardized / is upgraded to be faster. Imagine not having the breakout adapter, and you have an HDMI or DP cable on there connected to a 1080p TV, how will you connect a flash drive without screwing with the display? Or even if you do have the adapter, will USB-C have enough bandwidth to support high transfer speeds when 1080p takes up so much? I'm sure they thought of, and ignored that.
I prefer this era of the channel. Got right to the info.
