  • The 12 inch MacBook was many things: loved, hated, appreciated, mocked. But what it was above all else, was bold. It pushed limits, changed the game, and wasn't afraid to try something extreme. And I think it deserves a second change. So today I am once again asking Apple to bring back their failed Mac from the Intel days! Think about what could happen with a new M2 or M3 Apple Silicon 12 inch MacBook! Portability, thin and lightness, it would be the ultimate MacBook.

    What I would do is have it as the entry level macbook, get rid of the Air M1 and keep this line as the under 1000dl mac with one generation back SOC. Have the Air be one level up from this. It sucked in performance but the computer itself was amazing I loved it for quick weekend trips for office and email.

    An Apple silicon 12" or 12.5 Inch Macbook would be awesome! I guess the only issue would be if you put the M2 inside it would overheat even more. They could make modded version where it only uses efficiency cores or heavily uses them? The m2 efficiency cores are actually very good.

    Agreed! I was talking to Vadim about a new 12" last week. It would be sweet to have a new one even if it has 1 TB port + Magsafe. Not sure if you saw our video on low power mode, but the most impressive thing about M2 is just how powerful it is in low power mode because of the much better efficiency cores. I'm talking about half the power usage of those intel M3 chips with super low temps and killer performance.

    • @MarleyTravels
      @MarleyTravels 2 года назад +2

      It would be interesting if Apple came out with an "M2 Light" with say eight efficiency cores and two performance cores. Stick that in a 12 inch form factor MB and tune it to use the performance cores as little as possible. Ideally with a couple of USB/Thunderbolt 3 ports plus MagSafe 3. I could see that being a winner with the ultra portability crowd.

      @thorsteinj 2 года назад

      I’m pretty sure that machine actually existed within Apple even way back in 2015.
      It probably wasn’t released because they hadn’t figured out the entire transition yet, perhaps the A chips’ graphics couldn’t handle non-Apple apps or perhaps Rosetta 2 wasn’t done etc.
      Either way macOS was probably running on arm even when they were doing the intel transition. So something must have kept it back, maybe they genuinely thought intel would deliver magical chips to thin devices (tl;dr: they didn’t).

    They couldn't get away with the unreliable butterfly keyboard any more. Maybe that's the design limitation that's holding them back - they can't make a reliable keyboard thin enough?

    Definitely the MacBook Air over MacBook 12-12.5”. Not that much difference in size and I wouldn’t want to compromise on performance.

    Sadly, I don’t think Apple is going to bring this 12 inch form factor back. It would just bite into all sales from the MacBook lineup. The Pro that users buy without actually needing, the overrated and disappointing silicon Air’s. Mostly Everyone would get the 12”.
    I Just got two 2017 models one i5 256ssd the other 2017 i7 512 go ssd both 16gb ram. I use them for game development since Apple doesn’t want to invest in a touchscreen macOS.. this is the closest to an iPad Pro. I use screen duet with the headless i5, and it’s basically the Mac pad that I’ve always wanted. Don’t think that this is a solution for having macOS on iPad. Most of the applications that you will want to run are not optimize for touchscreen controls, they do work, however, but the workflow is not as efficient as using mouse or trackpad.

    Well of course they could but then the Air would have no reason to exist.
    They should just slap a small fan to the M2 in the air, get rid of the 13" MBP and introduce the M2 Macbook.

    I bought the 12" MacBook back then for my wife and it still is what she daily uses. Just for email, surfing, collecting fotos, writing. It still serves her well, and she enjoys that small form factor, that makes it so easy to use anywhere.

    I would definately buy a 12 inch Apple silicon Macbook, I had two of the original ones a 2015 one and a 2017 one which i used extensively when traveling, they were very slow, but I put up with it for the fantastic form factor.

  • @glezpik

    For me, this form factor fits THE REAL Macbook Air concept.
    I used to have a 12 inch 2015 retina with a stand, a magic mouse and a magic keyboard, I just had to sell it to buy a medicine for my mom :(. My experience was good, I really didn´t suffered the butterfly keyboard because I used the Mac as a desktop Mac, I miss how beautiful it looked (I had the Space Gray), I still have the dongle I bought to connect an external 24 inch monitor, SD card slot and 2 USB classic ports, the only thing I hated was the SSD storage, only 256GB, but still, one of the best designs, a living fossil from the Jony Ive era.

    I just bought the last 2017 m3 MacBook 12-inch, from a pawn shop. Wiped it from scratch and didn’t restore any backups - it’s been great! Battery life is “fine” and the PDFs load and scroll a bit slow, but I barely notice it.
    I use Screen Sharing to load my desktop Mac and play games remotely. For sound, I go to the AirPlay menu and select the MacBook 12-inch … and this works! Two-way sharing of audio & video.

    Even more importantly, I’d be able to convince my mom to upgrade from the 2018 version to this with pretty much no change in weight. She has rheumatoid arthritis and is extremely limited in how much weight she can carry or hold which is why she got this rather than the 2018 MacBook Air.

    I have an idea why this Mac book 12 is not refresh:
    1. The Mac book use butterfly keyboard, is it possible to swap with magic keyboard ?
    2. The Mac book 12 would be cheap, this will create a problem in the product lineup because Apple want to sell IPads for user who want under 900 laptops.

    Most definitely YES!
    Release it in vivid iMac colours (orange, blue, red, green, black) and they’d sell like hot cakes.
    My 2003 12-inch PowerBook was my favourite Apple laptop.
    The 11-inch MacBook Air was okay, but I never warmed to the elephant-sized bezels and wedge-shape.
    If Apple can put an M1 in a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, they can put it in a 12-inch MacBook.
