The beauty of building a Hackintosh is you customise it to your personal needs, build one that does exactly what you need it to do very well, and nothing more. That's how you save a ton of money. I have a 7+ year old Hackintosh built into a rack mount case, solely for use in music production. Computer, audio interface and effect's all rack mounted in one compact unit. Logic Pro being CPU based meant I didn't need to splash out on an expensive GPU, I didn't care about upgrades or internet connectivity so no need for a WiFi card. It's still only running Mojave, but it 'ain't' broke so why upgrade, 7 years ago it cost me between £650-£700. I also currently have a 2018 MacBook Air which I use for everything else as I don't need a powerful machine to browse the web, and it can still record music, although only one track at a time. Both computers combined are still cheaper than one 'kitted' out MacBook Pro from Apple, which will only ever do your required task averagely. You just need to know what's right for you in a Hackintosh build, then spec the computer out around your personal requirements, for me CPU and SSD was a priority everything else was secondary. A bit of careful planning required but totally worth it in the long run.
My issue with a prebuilt Hackintosh is as you said, updates can require a fair bit of additional work. You can't just buy one of these and use it long term without having to learn about Hackintoshing, as soon as an update (or any other issue) prevents it from booting, you're no better off than if you'd bought any other prebuilt PC except for having known compatible parts, you risk having to go through the entire process of Hackintoshing again in order to get it back up and running. I can totally see people buying this as a cheap alternative to a Mac expecting it to "just work" only to brick it during an update after a few months, be unable to fix it and therefore end up with an incredibly overpriced PC. As for the SSD speeds, while it's an M.2 form factor, that particular SSD uses SATA, not NVMe, if it was advertised as NVMe then it's totally falsely advertised.
You should sell the pyramid case on ebay. Put the components in a new case and upgrade the cooling and make a video about it. Also it would be good tk see the intricacies of the hackintosh booting up and how long it takes and if all the apple features work.
The amount of work that goes into building and maintaining them is just mind-boggling. I just want to click Update, walk off, and come back to a newly updated OS.
I am currently running macOS 11.6.2 Big Sur on my Lenovo ThinkPad T440S. R3n, that’s true. But there are sometimes some with 500gb for 60€ while the cheapest sata version costs 50€, if it is not so much more expensive you should buy it. Also for flight simulators they should be used, because flight simulators needing to copy much data to RAM.
The SSD at 6:26 is actually not NVME, it's an M.2 SATA drive. M.2 SATA drives have two notches on the connector, while M.2 NVME drives only have one. If you swapped the SATA drive for an NVME drive, you would boost your speeds from the 600MB/s range, to the 3000MB/s range.
Mmmmm very strange. Just a note, the price comparison with the imac didn't take into account the lack of a screen, and the keyboard and mouse that you did mention. It would be a hell of a screen for that price difference but that's not the whole story. What about the legal issues of using Mac OS on a hackintosh?
I believe selling Hackintosh is a no-no. A company a while back got sued by Apple for doing it and another company called “OpenCore” is publicly doing it. I know you bought and didn’t sell. Just saying. As always, I love your content. Long time subscriber! 👍
@@PeaJayTheGr8 The companies selling hackintoshes yeah that's a no go but I don't really think Apple's going to give a f*** about that guy selling one hackintosh on eBay or offer up it's not really worth the effort
I’m running pretty much the same system minus the slow ssd, cooling and power supply. It’s been stable for a year. You way over paid at 2600 but I think that’s what you get for the case and someone building it for you. It’s actually very easy to get up and running with that deaingare board. I think you should build your own. It’s a fun weekend project. My build costs around $3000 CAD and that includes a 4K 32” screen. You can do much better than $2600 USD for a machine like that.
I really liked this video a lot. I keep thinking about the design of the pyramid. I don't think I'd want the pyramid shape if I couldn't put a decent amount of RGB lighting in there. Guess, I want the hackintosh to look more Alienware like. I'm more a desktop PC person so my tastes may be different than most Apple users.
That’s actually pretty cool… Just put a better cooling system in that - and SSDs, those speeds are atrocious but it’s a piece of cake to upgrade them - and it’s a nice deal.
Re-engineer it by improving those areas you have uncovered. Most can be done with remove and replace components. The air handling solution might need to be a custom mod. You didn't state what the terms of warranty is from Pyramid or even if there is one.
I think that getting a Hackintosh prebuilt is not the smartest move as updates can completely ruin your configuration (you'll need another Mac to fix this). And as a Hackintosh owner, it is much easier to set it up yourself as you have the knowledge on how to update later on.
For your next video , you should upgrade it with water cooling and upgrade the power unit and then retest it and make back to back comparison before and after
I have *no* idea what I'd do with that case. I kind of had a feeling the cooler would be ... bad... just the instant I saw the sticker "wobbling" as the fan spun. Attention to detail goes to everything on higher quality parts.
I'm really good with computer hardware, but building a hackintosh. It took a couple of days to get a Mac VM up and running to make the bootable USB. It took me TWO WEEKS! to get it to even install cuz getting the right kexts is a nightmare. Then another 2 days to get the sound working and the sound is still really low. But I learned alot and have less hair but I'm a little smarter now because of it.
And this is why you build it yourself instead of getting ripped off, that's the whole point of a Hackintosh. You choose the components and avoid having to "fix" someone else's questionable build
The builder could have spent $200 more and still made $500 profit, and installed a quality water cooling or high end air cooling solution, and put in an NVME PCIE SSD. Even a PCI-E 3.0 model would completely wipe the wloor with that basic sata model. At least he went to the trouble to put a Apple genuine/compatible Wifi board in it to get iServices working. The case is totally cool, but pretty impractical, unless you have a nice large desk the size of a swimming pool to show it off! :)
While I am moving further away from anything Apple due to the move towards ipadifying their computers, I am not and never was in favor of hackintosh computers. This specific computer has the issues you mentioned, plus from what I read months ago about this specific PC case, it is terrible for cooling. Temperature (and thus performance) wise this computer would perform far better if built in a more conventional case, which wouldn't look as cool, but would act cool. Thanks for the video.
People who complain about mac prices often don't take into consideration that you get a computer, a superb quality monitor, a keyboard and a mouse/trackpad. Find a monitor of the same quality of the retina display on mid to high range macs and include that in your hackintosh component list. Maybe if we compare the prices without leaving one of the most costly component it would be more fair. If hackintosh users needed to buy a 1000$ monitor to complete their machine, I think they would cheap out on internal components and their build would be less performant than a mac.
With OpenCore bootloader you could now use an AMD Ryzen CPU with up to 64 cores for hackintoshing. That's an advantage that's available on Hackintosh only. I also made the mistake with buying the Crucial MX500 when originally assembling my Hackintosh because I didn't notice the difference betweens mSATA and NVMe. It's now exchanged to a 2 TB NVMe ssd and will be built into my 2012 MacbookPro to increase capacity there. And I still saved ~2k€. The point is, if you really want to save money with Hackintoshs, you have to invest time and learn. If you don't invest, Apple or ebay sellers will rip you off as you're obviously willing to pay for your unwillingness to learn.
The Imac comes with a 5k monitor attached though plus apple support. I think after you buy a 5k monitor and a mouse and keyboard for the hackintosh the cost would be about the same.
Literally the same technical specs as my new hackintosh build although different brands and cooling, though I'm not so sure I would've kicked out another $1200 just for the pyramid. One of a kind no doubt haha
My issue with this build is the fact that the builder chose an RX 580 instead of an RX 5700/XT or a Vega 56/64 which would still be hardware friendly to MacOS, the price isn't really justifiable with that graphics card to be honest with you.
With the iMac you get a really good display, speakers, thunderbolt three, and maybe a keyboard, which I think brings it a lot closer to the other computers price
I build an hackintosh my specs: Same motherboard (very good motherboard) I9 9900K 64 ram-Corsair rgb vengeance Radeon VII -Ouch the price 🥺😢 Samsung evo pro 2TB NVMe (x2) WiFi/Bluetooth working, also iMessenger working CORSAIR - Hydro Series H100i RGB Platinum 120mm liquid cooling EVGA 800 gold Power Supply Phanteks Evolv X- case (beautiful case) Monitor -Acer - Predator XB272 27" LED FHD G-SYNC 240Hz Glorious Model D white -mouse Glorious White Ice Edition keyboard For a total of $2400 FYI; I’m running macOS Catalina Also you have to understand that the seller probably charge a lot on labor

Also what you don’t take into account is that you would have to find a equally specd 5k 27 inch screen and add that to the price of the hackintosh
The Imac comes with a 5k monitor attached though plus apple support. I think after you buy a 5k monitor and a mouse and keyboard for the hackintosh the cost would be about the same.
Amanda true true 😌
They even copied the thermal throttling, that's nice !
i would be very interested in a series on hackintosh...i want to do one
An RX580 and a 9900K is such a horrible combination, talk about bottleneck.
Literally the same technical specs as my new hackintosh build although different brands and cooling, though I'm not so sure I would've kicked out another $1200 just for the pyramid. One of a kind no doubt haha
I've got a mini version of this case. Definitely needs a water-cooling solution.
An italian youtuber called StockDroid has done a pyramid pc that looks like this hackintosh
#MARSO
My issue with this build is the fact that the builder chose an RX 580 instead of an RX 5700/XT or a Vega 56/64 which would still be hardware friendly to MacOS, the price isn't really justifiable with that graphics card to be honest with you.
With the iMac you get a really good display, speakers, thunderbolt three, and maybe a keyboard, which I think brings it a lot closer to the other computers price
I know cooling is not good, ssd could be better but... definitely keep it bc it looks just awesome
