  • I recently had the all to common "CCT" problem in my CBR 600 F4i. I wanted to post this video to give others a better idea of how this works and what they might be able to do to try to fix it before bringing it to a mechanic. Hope this helps

Well done video. Thanks. I've had the same issue on my 2012 cbr1000rr 30K miles. I managed to do as you say, make a short, stubby flat head screw driver and wind the tensioner screw all the way in and then released it abruptly, allowing the pin to reset and fully wedge itself against the chain guide tensioner rail. The process gave enough tension to the chain to take up the slack and get rid of the vibration noise around 4K RPM. One thing I would recommend while doing that is to put the bike in 6th gear, while it's on a bike stand and apply tension to the rear wheel pushing it forward. Doing this allows the timing chain inside the engine to fully tighten up on the drive side and fully loosen up on the opposite tensioner slack side. Have a second person apply tension to the wheel in previously decried manner while you wind up and release the tensioner screw. This will give maximum allowable chain tension. Additionally I would discourage the use of commonly available manual chain tensioners, since when using those you are recommended to remove the valve cover to get to the timing chain and acquire the proper tension measurement between the cam shaft gears for setting the manual tensioner bolt. It would be easy to overtighten the manual tensioner leading to possible premature wear on the timing drive components. Stick to the OEM CCT, since that's the part that was designed by Honda engineers for those engines. Cheers.

NICE...finally found something that is closest to what I am hearing on my 09 CBR600RR ABS. The whole "can of BB's" part is exactly what I hear when clutching out of 1st at 4-5k rpms. Thanks for the video!

Did this fix your problem? Just curious or if it was the heat guard like on mine lol. (Before it got totalled in an insurance claim that is)

      @CPLKenDude1 2 года назад +1

@@joshhill4903 no I took it to a mechanic a while back and they found it was just a loose chain (It was close to end of life). They tightened it up for me, but said it needed to be replaced. This fixed the noise I was hearing. I ended up buying the chain removal tool and putting new chain and sprockets on myself. Haven't had the issue since.

@@CPLKenDude1 glad it was a general maintenance thing! Im taking my 08 cbr1000rr for a valve adjustment, fork seal replacements, new spark plugs, new air filter, new tires and cam chain tensioner operation check- im sure theyll mention the chain and sprocket on mine, but ill do that myself and just let them tighten it up for me. As i still have a 525 set from my 600rr, was just short a chain since the 1000rr is 4 links longer.

I have a 07 CBR600rr that has a nasty rattling sound as the engine revs pass 3500RPMs then goes away as the RPMS increase. The sound is worse during deceleration at the same range. After much research, I have concluded that it's the cam chain tensioner . Note to those replacing your CCT. You have to retract the tensioner before you re-install it I'll update later and confirm I can use a screw driver on my 07 after I install mine. Btw, very useful video! Thanks for posting.

  • @IwanNieuwland

There is no reason to drop the block to get to the cct, I've done it by removing the tank alone but if you have trouble getting to it, you can dislodge the trotllebodies and at that point it's right there with nothing in the way.
All the cct I've replaced seemed to work fine but for some reason didn't cut it anymore (a Honda thing) .
My advise: get a manual cct. Yes you need to adjust is yourself and it sounds like a hassle, but it really isn't. Once it's on you can reach it once you get the tank up
Just turn it in with your fingers until you feel resistance. Start the engine. Now turn the cct in little by little and give the engine some blibs (temporary Rev increase) until you hear a whining noise. That's the sound of the cam chain whizzing along the chain guide under to much tension. Then turn the cct out until the whine dissappears and you should be all good. Secure the locking nut on the cct and go for a test drive. With a warm engine and standing next to it, give her a few good revs, there should be no chain clatter (too loose) or whine (too tight).

Same one for the Honda Rincon. costs $38. 14510-HN8-013 is the part # for the Rincon and the old part # for the Rincon is 14510-HN8-03.
if you don't get it changed then the cam chain will jump and on a quad you have to take the motor apart along with the 4wd to get the front case off just to get at the chain.
you could get a block of aluminum and thread a bolt through the center to put tension on the plastic part that dampens the chain vibration.

The tensioner has an oil valve that keeps the ctt with presure depending on the oil presure. That valve is what usually gets damaged so there wont be much presure for the tensioner keeping your chain tide.

Update. I bought a new one and it comes with a short piece of metal installed in the slot, which you pull out (ONLY after installation is completed!) There's no room for a screwdriver on the 07 CBR600's. For installation I just removed the gas tank. and moved the wiring harness to the side to get the that rear bolt. Installation note: The gasket is directional. Face the stamped out impression towards the CCT (not the motor.) Service manual says tighten bolts securely.

The torsionspring inside the CCT just looses it's strenght after some time. You can actually take the CCT apart and prewind the spring so the tension get's higher. Anyway this will always be a bad tensioner and sooner or later fail again !!

Good question. The screw is spring loaded so one you pull the screw driver out the plunger will push itself out. If it was stuck you may be able to screw it the opposite way but you shouldn't have to. Hope that helps

      Steven Carroll
Thanks Steve. Your video has been very helpful. Mine is obviously stuck as it is not tensioning the cam chain as it should. If I turn it clockwise, it will retract the tensioner. When I pull the screwdriver out, I can only HOPE that is will kick out and correct the tension. IF it does not, it means my tension will be less than it was before. If only we were sure that turning it anticlockwise will push the plunger out and increase the tension. I have bought a manual tensioner just in case that happens. Meanwhile, the tensioner for my 2010 CBR1000RR is $65.03 in bikebandit.com so maybe I'll just buy that too. Thanks again a million.

I don't know how easy it is on a 1997, but if you can take it out and test it, then you will know for sure. Some people prefer a manual CCT. LOL you don't need to remove all those parts....Just the throttle side, side upper fairing. lift up the rubber heat shield and wallah it's rite there. I just changed mine on my 05 cbr600rr about 4,000 miles ago. Took me total of about 40 minutes. Removing all that hardware will take someone 4 hours probably 8 hours for the first timer.

Did you have to makesure the motor stayed top dead centre? I keep reading horror stories about people removing the CCT only to have the timing stuffed up when re-installing?

If the mechanic did in fact remove all the hardware to get to the CCT (I very Highly doubt it) but if he did then 300 bones is a tad high not to bad...considering it's 90 bucks an hour. I was lucky enough to attend wyoming Tech for motorcycle mechanics....(ahem 20 years ago) yeah I know that makes me an old fart

Automatic tensioners are crap, plain and simple. The can and have failed at any time. Manual is the only safe bet IMO. VERY simple to set.

Never pay anyone to work on your bike, it’s not worth it man. All you had to do was remove your tank to get to it

the oem cct is not manually adjustable as described in the vid. the oem is a hydraulic cct and works on it's own.. when the cam chain reaches a threshold where beyond the oem's tensioner it needs to be replaced.Racers prefer a manual cct in their bike and it's only about 50 dollars. or a pro cct with an internal o ring allowing for adjustments..which is about 80 dollars. prop up tank, remove airbox, remove throttle body, remove valve cover, remove two screws and gasket, replace cct, done. simple
