This was written at about the same time as In The Air Tonight, and is kind of a sequel to that song, both of which were about his divorce. Yeah, Phil was going thru a very pissed off period in his life, but we all got some amazing music as a result.

It just dawned on me that maybe there’s a lot of people in this comment section you don’t realize that Phil Collins is one of the most respected drummers on earth, and it is 100% likely that he played all the drums. Drummers worship him.

This is one of my favorite Phil Collins solo songs. I will say with Phil live versions are always better. With Genesis I would say Mama, invisible touch, I can't dance, turn it on again, no son of mine.... their all good. Against all odds is my favorite solo song by Phil. The key is live. His emotion, charisma...he puts his all in it for an audience. The best concert I ever saw was the invisible touch tour, I was crushing on Phil through the 80s and 90s. Onstage he is captivating.
His voice is blessing for my ears! Masculine, passionate and emotional!

I really enjoy your reviews and watching you learn to love Phil’s music that so many of us have loved for decades. Phil is a musical genius!! You should definitely check out Take Me Home and Long Long Way To Go as well as Mama and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by his band Genesis!!
When Phil joined Genesis in 1970, he considered himself strictly a musician. He was the drummer. Sure, he'd sing backup while drumming, but he was a drummer first. He always thought that the drummer was 'the most respectable gig in the group.' He said the drummer was like the goalkeeper -- you could have a bad group, but if the drummer sounded great, it'd still be a good group. He never wanted to be the singer because all a singer did was 'stand up front, look good, and wiggle their bum.'
When Genesis' singer left, however, and they couldn't find anyone to replace him, Phil ended up with the job. Then he had to learn it wasn't all that easy to look good and wiggle your bum. He was most nervous about interacting with the audience.
By the 1980s, however, he ended up writing his own songs and essentially became an all around artist: Writer, singer, drummer, etc. His career path is incredibly fascinating.
To see a full range of what Genesis was about around this time, I recommend this live version of the song 'Home by the Sea.' (Don't do any version that's shorter, because it's only half the song.)

You're 100% correct....it was a woman. His wife/mother of his children ran off with another man taking their children with her. It's my belief that "In The Air Tonight" was a song directed at the man she ran off with. After a tortuous divorce and having his name drug through the dirt by her, he'd finally had enough and graced us with this ballad of a heart-broken man beginning to repair himself and stand up for himself against everything going on in his life at the time. Phil Collins is such an awesome artist. You need to try some Genesis -- the band he was drummer in and also their vocal front man a little later. Do yourself a favor and watch Phil perform this song live. If you think his anger's coming through in the studio, just wait 'til ya see him sing it live. Have a great weekend....🌟💫💛

A white buddy of lives on the southside of Chicago and his brothers from the hood basically told him that if you want to pass through the hood relatively easily, blast this song out your windows as you go through. Most people will leave you alone. I have always loved this song.

I always get GTA V flashbacks when hearing this song.
Dog it was songs like this one that launched Phil's solo career. Good for Phil so showing his anger in his personal realationsship that left him alone. But instead of moping he got to work and showed his amazing talent to write and perform as a solo artist away from his participation with Genesis. Could be his angriest song but he brought the house to express in this song what was going on in his life at the time. So sorry for Phil in his present state of health. Kudo's to Phil for being one of the most talents ever

Phils just ad libbing many of his songs in real time, he goes back and polishes and overdubs, but I guarantee you some of the lines in this are being written and recorded all at once.

I am sure people told you Phil came from the band Genesis he was the drummer and then became the lead singer. There are a lot of great Genesis songs for you to listen to. Check out a song calle Got a job to do, he is singing he is a hitman it is awesome.

I hope Phil Collins knows how much he's loved and appreciated by his fans throughout the years. Sadly, he's been suffering health issues and, ironically, problems with his woman. He deserved genuine peace from his close loved ones at his age.

I really wish we had suggested this song live from Perkins Palace. I don't think his passion ( Love, anger,sadness,ect.) Comes across as well in the studio version. With Phil I would always go with a live performance. Well, the Anything she does video is pretty good, and I can't seem to find a live version with good sound quality.

This is a great opener to his second solo album, 'Hello, I Must Be Going', from 1982. As mentioned, it's part autobiographical as it details the angst and heartache he felt at the time due to the divorce from his first wife. Something he did a lot of in the tracks in his first 2 solo albums. The following song on the album is similar, but far more up-beat, but instead of anger, he has a kind of astonished disbelief/puzzlement of why and how the person he's singing about has behaved. 'I Cannot Believe It's True.' There's also others on the album worth reacting to that have different angles on the same theme, as well as some really nice, sentimental songs.

Phil wrote a number of songs about his divorce, and this was likely one of them. But the way that he wrote it really resonated with a lot of people and that’s the point. It’s not just about an ex-partner for a lot of people. It’s about feeling cornered and saying “fuck it”.

Phil has been a little corny at times, but he seems to have gotten a lot of respect from hip hop over the years. I've loved him and Genesis for a long time.

As a general rule (subject to a few exceptions), Phil solo or with his band Genesis is better in live versions. The exceptions to the rule are Genesis’ Land of Confusion (the official video is 80s craziness satirizing politicians and celebrities using puppets); Phil’s duet with Philip Bailey, Easy Lover (nobody does Bailey’s parts justice when performing live); Phil’s I Wish It Would Rain Down (the studio version and official video have Eric Clapton - and the video is full of in-jokes), and Phil’s Another Day in Paradise (a song about homelessness with a very powerful video).
Question. .. how many of these songs will you add to your music to listen to on a regular? I personally think we need more bands . I miss seeing a whole band . Now all we get us a dj a bunch of dancers and a (Singer ) lip syncing . It's a complete joke . And not many songs have meaning anymore . I love my 70s and 80s !!

By the time Phil wrote this he was a heavy drinker and took drugs. As he said, we don't play the same games, needless to say, his marriage hit the rocks in alot of ways, his wife's affair. She was the one who would not try to reconcile, hell hath no fury ect

Phil did drink later after his divorce but no drugs. That's incorrect.
Its a well known fact he was addicted to painkillers and anti depressants combined with alcohol, thats the reason his wife left him yet again! He never bathed for months on end or so she told the press!
