      Not everything has gone down, technically. Buyers are paying less in auctions, but alottttt of sellers are keeping their BUY NOW prices really higher. There's like D list first appearances that they price like A list

      Could not agree more. As the blue chips start to chill....the best of the rest will start to come off. EBay sellers especially will get back to reasonable “buy it now” pricing.

    I don't think you've seen anything yet. The recession is just starting. Wait until lots of people start losing their houses and jobs. Let's not forget, it was rich wall street like folks that manipulated the comic market just like all other markets. If they decide they want to liquidate, these prices will plummet even more. I started this hobby near those high price points, but I bought what I like, not what I planned to flip. I hope I can get some grails at a further discount.

    It's funny how we trick ourselves like this. When comics are going up we calculate our investment at the FMV but when comics are going down we don't pay attention to it and don't want to give into the fact that we are down. It is very true that there are some good deals out there. Sellers on some platforms are still stubborn and asking for 2021 prices.

    • @consciouswynneconcepts
      @consciouswynneconcepts 2 года назад

      The vendors at the conventions are mostly still very stubborn. Was at Megacon a few weeks ago and those guys were charging ridiculous prices for a lot of their books, especially the slabs. To make matters worse, very few of them were willing to budge on price or even give you decent value on a trade. Had one clown offer me $400 trade-in value for a Secret Wars #8 in a 9.8 slab. Meanwhile he was selling two raw copies of the very same book on his wall for $270 each. Go figure. His reasoning for lowballing me was; "that book is overvalued right now and is going to crash like Moon Knight #1 once the hype wears off."

    I had a feeling something was up when I was looking at a lot of early Amazing Spider-Man books from the 60’s. Was making a deal with the seller and I told him it was to steep then he told me he had other buyers and we stopped talking. After that on EBay almost everyday he keep messaging me saying his lot is coming down in price and I should jump on it! What happen to all those other buyers though??😂😂 Eventually waited and got Amazing Spider-Man books 16-48 for under $2000!

    Interesting video. Your right that something is only worth what it sells for and genuine Collectors will welcome this. However, it will impact on people who sell as a business/sideline. One thing I would highlight more though is that if the recession continues, many people won't have money to spend on comics so may not be able to build their collection whatever they come down to.

    Well said, man! If you bought a Hulk 181 off the rack for a quarter, and still own it today, and it's a nice high-grade copy, that book is still only worth.... a quarter. It's crazy because these drops really are - in my opinion - solely the extrinsic factors of the economy. There's no comic burn out, or people not wanting to buy comics, but rather the force of the hand because so many people are struggling right now with $7 a gallon gas, meats and other food that's almost tripled in price, etc. And the MAIN important take away is what you summarized at the end; the new floors have been set and if bought before 2021, you're most likely still in the "unrealized" green. I'm now looking at that FF 52! it might be time for me to scrape up some change! lol.

Likely will be looking for fist appearance of Wolverine and Punisher once we get into peak fear and the job market collapses that’s about 6 months away. Comic book market still has a lot more to drop. It’s a buyers market coming. If you have a stable job and I do because I work for the government so I will be leaning into the stock market and the comic book market for the next 12 months.

  • @spinnerrackstudios
    @spinnerrackstudios 2 года назад +7

    Most of these key books have had an unprecedented run-up in price and a modest pullback should have been expected, and quite frankly, probably overall a healthy thing for the market. Pullbacks help stabilize markets long-term. Heck, take a look at the history of the stock market since the great depression. Even with a 30% or so correction, I suspect most of these books have still had a hell of a good run the past few years. If you got caught up in the fomo and spending spree from the Covid money, well you only have yourself to blame. By the way, the All Star #8 you mention had brittle pages whereas the earlier copy had cream to off-white pages. Page quality does count for something -- you can't evenly compare all 4.5's across the board.

    For the AF 15 in 8.0, I don’t think you factored in that there was an extra 15% buyer premium added to the $448k, so the buyer actually paid $515k with the premium and that is how books get reported in GPA. This is very much in line with the previous $520k sale you quoted. Note that some ComicConnect auctions add a 15% buyer premium added and some do not. It is noted in the description for each book.

    Just as an overall trend, I would expect U.S. prices for collectible comic books to continue gradually decreasing as long as we're seeing significant inflation and corresponding increased prices for gasoline, groceries, utilities, insurance and other essentials. When dealers and collectors find themselves in need of cash for essentials, they can raise it quick by selling desirable comics at a noticeable discount.

    The markets don't favor books right now...If you got in cheap you can still sell and make a buck or two...but so many Americans are leveraged with credit cards and debt...gas high, rent high, food high, interest rates going up...stocks down...crypto down...Many sellers need infusion of cash...this will last for at least two years...so the better deals are in 12 months or so...happy hunting.

    stacking 12 of the same keys in a row is moronic move by that auction house... only so many af 15 , ff1, etc buyers at any given auction-when its stacked in a single auction with 11 other copies it doesn't have a chance... prices are down, but that auction jamming so many copies at once did no one (other than savvy buyers) any favors...headlines will show these top notch keys selling lower, will add downward pressure to mkt... crazy stupid move-if id consigned one of those keys i'd be furious.

    1st time I've heard anyone explain what I've thought from the start of my collecting. I didnt think about getting rich off my comic books. I just thought about what cool books I wanted. And the price I could pay. And when I go to sale one day. Me and the buyer will work out a fair price...so grading my big books never was a interest to me. I just scooped raw lower complete condition books. So now I never worry about losing money on any of my Grail and key books. And I for sure wouldnt sale any at a loss. I'd just keep sitting on them. For example I also have a couple FF 52s. I didnt pay more then $200 for VG condition on them. When I go to sale even if I decided $500 was a great price to sale a copy. Well the buyer will happy with the deal and I would be happy to make double my money. That's if I decided to sale while the market is a bit lower. But if that's worse case scenario. I'd have a smile on my face ear to ear. I never spent crazy money on higher grade slabs. I just went for the books I could buy and have plenty left over. For a few other grails. That was always my philosophy and I've stuck to that..some one just messaged me and wants to purchase my FF #5. It would be a huge profit. But I'm keeping my book. It a lower grade and I didnt break the bank picking it up. So for me I totally agree. Dont sell your books at a loss. Just sit and hold. Once we get out of this horrible economy. Things will pop again. So dont worry fellow collectors. We will be just fine. :) great post bud.

Those random older books might not be hot spec that could bounce back, but to your point, you can really build up your collection now if that is your goal. Also it means flippers are not buying, so they are not causing prices to spiral upwards as flippers sell to flippers. It's a collectors market - hurrah !

The next generation of kids aren't collecting books like I did when I was a kid. What kid can afford a comic at $3.99 - $4.99 a pop and that's new books not including key book prices, my mother used to give me spare change of $3.00 - $4.00 dollars when I was kid and I would come home with 8-10 books. Life moves on so the kid who’s 14 now by the time he/she turns 19 if they’re into books I would like to believe that they will recognize tosin as the new black panther. Those were were not the best examples of value taking a dive, seems typical.
    Golden age and high priced grails fluctuate hard because there are fewer buyers.
    Bronze and Copper age books have a much higher run so they're back and forth.
    The best books to get are the 9.0 and up for modern books, low print runs and old grails that present well. My Hulk 181 9.2 white pages, TMNT 9.2 white pages and FF 1 4.0 white pages have tripled and more since I bought them 6 years ago.
    The market depends on buyers, greed and speculation. Just get the ones you enjoy but don't expect them to perform.

    Sellers taking their books to market with "buy it now" sales are still acting as though it's 2021, as if the rest of us don't know that the market correction is in full swing. I get wanting to keep the market flying high, but it's high time for a lot of people to take the clue to either adjust their pricing or wait for the market to pick up steam again.

    • @kyleroussel
      @kyleroussel 2 года назад +1

      @@metsrus Yeah maybe there's a bit of that, too. I don't fault them for wanting to get top dollar, especially if they themselves paid a lot for a given book. But at what point does the reality set in that it's not 2021 anymore, we're sliding into a recession, and it's time to either drop the price or take if off the market for a while. Leaving it to rot does more to harm the book (and your reputation as a seller) in the long run, IMO.

    This is all welcome news for the books I want to buy. But what if you're one of those people who recently came back in to the hobby, and just got their books back from CGC that were meant to sell to fund the grail purchases? Asking for a friend whose name is my name.

    • @Swagglehaus
      @Swagglehaus  2 года назад +1

      haha, I mean everyone's entry points are different. As long as you're in the green for a book, then its totally fine to sell IMHO (even if that means leaving some potential money on the table). Now if you're in the red on some books, those are the ones you may want to wait to sell (especially if they are books that have factors to get hot down the road - like a movie or something coming up)

    • @RoyalFizzbin
      @RoyalFizzbin 2 года назад +1

      Yup. I was buying MORE because of the price escalation, and now that CGC and CBCS has finally gotten around to grading my friggin’ books, the market has tanked.
      And yeah, sure… for the books I wanted to collect, that is a nothingburger… but that’s about a third of the books I bought. Everything else, I am just taking a bath on.

      I am starting to appreciate just how vast the gap is between how easy it is to buy comics and how hard it is to sell them (unless you have a big social media presence, or are a comic shop). No one warns you about this! All good though, still having fun.

    High end books like AF 15 in 8.0 can vary quite a bit based on how they present. All 8.0's aren't created equal and it impacts how much they sell for. Not saying that is for sure the case here but it's a factor.
