All-new Jeep Cherokee Overland Review - Is this offroad legend now just a luxury family car?

- The all new 5th-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee has touched down in South Africa, but for the first time is offered with 7 seats. We took the Jeep for a little 4x4 test at the All Terrain 4x4 test facility to see if it is as capable offroad as it is comfortable on the long open road.
We had the Overland spec, which is the midspec model. This 7 seater Jeep is a great large family vehicle with lots of comfort and tech to enjoy. The Jeep does feel like it lacks some power under the bonnet, providing 211kW and 344 Nm of Torque coming from a 3.6l V6 engine. The air suspension helps with the ride high and comfort and there are various terrain type modes to choose from.
The Jeep proved to be a very luxurious family SUV which will happily take the entire family on a road trip and to explore the country. It is also capable enough to get you over some tricky wash-outs or obstacles in the worst case scenarios.

I'd happily wait for 3 years and buy it on the second hand market, by then it would be a third of its price.
and totally unreliable.............
In 3 or even 4 years time it's definitely not going to be a third and definitely not even half of it's original price. The car market has changed these last 3 years.
@@CJr_M here they’re going for a half to a third after two years. Grand Cherokee SRT8 is RRP at $AUD97,450 first search I found doing a second hand search was a 2019 one for $30,500. Whilst what you say about the second hand market is 100% true, it doesn’t generally apply to brands with terrible reputations like Chrysler/Jeep. Toyotas here are going for more than they were new.
@@brainsmatterpodcast yes, that I know of, but your market is totally different to ours.
😂😂 with a millions things to fix
Disappointing review to say the least. Not sure if the presenter needs a little more practice and a confidence (sorry - just my opinion) or if the problem lies with the editing of the final product. The review felt rushed, I’ll-informed (doesn’t know where Jeep places it’s volume buttons behind the steering), confusing (“feels underpowered” but has “plenty of power to spare”) and it’s “Cherokee” not “Cheriokee”.
the volume buttons are behind the steering wheel, where you wwould usually find shifting pedals
Yupp
A bit of a disappointing review. The cross cuts to the axel twisters were particularly irritating as I wanted to see the full obstacle and whether Jeep have actually made some improvements to their quadra Trac system.
volume controls located at the back of the steering wheel underneath the flappy paddles 1:52
Thanks, I managed to find them on the drive back 🙈
I thought it was part of the flappy paddle, feels so hidden, but nice placement.
I believe there are extra buttons near the shift paddles behind the steering wheel. Maybe that's where "volume control" is?
yes, just like the last grand cherokee
Yeah hes a chop, most FCA products have them on the back
You are 100% correct. My wife drive a new Jeep and there are 2 sets of buttons behind the steering wheel. On each side. One set volume up down and the other set for choosing between radio channels or changing songs on music library.
It's only available in the one engine I don't like (3.6 V6). Would have loved this thing with the 3.0 V6 diesel, 5.7 V8 petrol or 6.4 SRT
Only for now, spoke to some gents at the Jeep dealer and said they will come later.
If there’s one thing I like about the interior , it’s definitely the extra screen for the front passenger.
Lovely car 💜
Is there a 2 row version available in South Africa?
I just love off-road
so.. have they done away with a "Grand" to seperate the two Cherokees?
great to see Dieter presenting more videos. kkeep it up
The volume controls are on the back of the steering wheel.
The volume knobs are behind the steering wheel
Jeep Grand Cherokee, also known as a Jeep Grand Cheriokee!!🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀💀
Lol the O is supposed to be silent
It does have volume up/down on paddle shifts
How can I review cars for you guys, or become a reviewer?
Politicians are already lining-up to buy it with our tax money.. 🤦🏾♂️
344Nm is paltry for such a large vehicle. It's not as mean as it looks.
True. Big SUVs thrive via torque.
Crazy to think that a Hyundai Santa Fe, although not much smaller than this, but still smaller, has over 100Nm more torque. And it's not even an offroading SUV, it's way to close to the ground. My father has a Santa Fe and the engine is a peach!
Wish they had a V6 diesel for the new Jeep as they did with the previous generation.
Did u say 344Nm this should have around 500-600Nm for its size.
I think the reviewer just needs a bit more confidence in their reviewing. I think that he tried and shows great promise. Outside of that, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is actually a phenomenal car. Especially the overland one.
Nice review too much buttons for you 😃
Kia Sportage review
Love this Jeep. The volume and skip track buttons are behind the steering wheel, it how Jeep can add more buttons on the steering wheel. Great review
Thanks!
I found those pesky hidden buttons on my way home. I thought they were part of the flappy paddle 🙈🤣
@@Carscoza I kind of prefer them being on the back, maybe I got used to them. It’s easier to use them
@@Carscoza are you guys going to do a full review soon?
K so, what I wanna know is how this big thing's gonna have SRT & Trackhawk variants?
Lol no. It's Grand Cherokee L. Likely would get the SRT treatment, but definitely not the 707hp motor.
According to Jeep SA, we're only gonna get the 3.6 V6 petrol, and that's it
Diesel would be nice
Finally someone said it..!!
They missed a big opportunity by not giving it a diesel engine
Volume controls probably behind the steering wheel
Correct, I found it on the drive home 🙃
@@Carscoza imagine having to do so much work to reduce volume
@@mabuleonkars9706 The worst part is that older Jeeps also had these knobs on the back of the steering wheel.....then had blank buttons on the front. How do you make that make sense?😂
@@wadesolomon2484 I guess they're doing it the early 2000's way😂😂😂. My dad's Opel had those knobs
@@mabuleonkars9706 it's weird how some companies can incorporate all their controls simply onto the steering wheel, and others struggle 😂
Where's the main Ou???
Jeep is famous for having their volume controls behind the steering wheel.
Great another car I can’t afford 😂
👍👍👍👍👍
The old one is better than the new one
In Australia the used values of Jeeps drop like crazy because of how unreliable they are, I’ve seen two or three year old ones for less than half price.
maybe the new one is, but the previous generation grand cherokee is a solid auto
@@THESLlCK not according to reliability reports, not for the last decade at least!
The last Cherokee that wasn’t far worse than Japanese, European, English, Australian, Or Korean reliability was the 1980s to very early 90s.
@@brainsmatterpodcast ok that's really interesting, by the way, totally unrelated to your baseless yapping, why did you like all your comments?
Someone even made a popular song about this ruclips.net/video/5sVmoOZRypk/видео.html :)
Did I hear correct ? R1,5m with less than even 500nm torque? No thanks mate il go into used department and get serious bargains with that cash but looks proper nice one!🙏🏾
For that money, you can get a brand new Stelvio QV.
If you was better prepared you will now Chrysler radio volume is at the back of steering wheel
Why only the L..??? Try and make a U-turn on offroad track in this ...🤪
The other review guy is so much better
I can't wait to see the SRT of this Jeep
tragically never happening because of the idiot french that bought fiat chrysler
Go buy it and get in more debt lol
@@kafilkavich707 don’t threaten us with a good time, pal
Disappointing review as I picked up that the reviewer is not too familiar with the Jeep brand. Would've been great for him to be fully orientated on the vehicle features before trying to do this review.
One day you will have to explain how you got a job. Perhaps your close relatives are board of directors.
Uuuuhhhh some German cars have volume control on the left. So it's not just the Jeep dude
Left hand drive countries being lazy, Japanese brands seem to be able to switch over 😊
@@pratapp I feel like the left hand volume knob is better in most instances, if the car has steering wheels volume controls. Because the person touching it the most would then, by default, be the passenger
Soccer mom special
No Diesel
Jeep has now joined the Germans in terms of pricing
I am so disappointed, not that the car it's not good I am sure it's as reliable as the previous models
Dude that's not fake leather or fake wood get your stories right and get your facts right if you going to talk about our vehicles
Could not agree more!!!!!
Lol you don't know where the volume buttons are on the steering wheel, next time do some homework 😜 🤣
Cherry-oak-key?..........................lol......
Jeep 'chereoke' 😆
What are you smoking! You put it in highest height setting, traction control and acceleration
If you are going to review a car maybe you should do some proper research and have at least some product knowledge without just "winging" it. In my opinion you have done a terrible job showcasing the Jeep referring to it by the wrong name duting the video (the Cherokee is a completelydifferent vehicle), not knowing the steering functionality (all modern jeeps gave volume up and down and other buttons on the back of the steering wheel) then comparing the 7 slot Jeep grill synonymous with the Jeep brand on pretty much all platforms and compare that to a freaking Suzuki Spresso. Do you even know what the 7 Slots symbolise??? Time for you to return to basics before doing any more reviews.
By all means do a review but at keast now what. You are talking about.
Does Jeep pay you to promote their cars lol ? These things are absolute money pits after a few years but then again I suppose those who can afford it dont really care.
If you can't afford it, just watch a suzuki or toyota video
@@THEDIESELCHANNEL Ai tog ou Tossie.
@@johanneswehrmann dit wat jy jou Jimny noem?
I'll stick to my 2000 Cherokee, these new ones are crap! The only good use I see for it is if you have a family and need to get around town. I wouldn't even feel safe taking that family car off-road, with all the fancy tech nonsense coming out in cars these days, who knows what will break lol I worked at a Mercedes-Benz dealership, my god these new cars have so many problems!
👎 videos without Ciro
Not a good reviewer. Or bad script.
nah
Not the best review ever.... would be nice to have someone who knows the old models of the particular car, so that they don't point out things he didn't know, rather new things on that car that weren't on the old models. This was a poor review!
Terrible engine. Should never have brought in petrol at all
I thought the same until I drove it. Goes extremely well. I have ordered one now. I currently have the 3 litre CRD overland could not tell the difference in acceleration. Honestly.
It's a Jeep, you shouldn't go off-road with it unless there's a Toyota behind it
Who in his righteous mind will still be looking to buy the most unreliable Jeep in 2023
Speak slower... finish your words.
You know I thought this was supposed to be an off-road video you didn't show any off-roading the only thing you just run your mouth that's terrible
There is only one "master of Africa" and it's called the Land Cruiser.
The Grand Cherokee is not made to handle African roads.
Biggest waste of R1.5mil you could get. Exceptionally heavy on fuel, will be unreliable like EVERY Jeep, parts will be very expensive and you'll likely wait 2-4 months for a part which is normal timelines for Jeep and resale value will be very bad like usual.
Looks ok i guess but that's about it.
If you can't afford it, just skip the video.
@@THEDIESELCHANNEL sorry if the truth offended you but facts don't care about your feelings 🙃
@@pauljansen6650 which facts? Thats the point you don't have facts.
@@THEDIESELCHANNEL ok you are right actually.
-Jeeps are light are fuel
-Jeep is the most reliable brand in SA
-Jeep parts are cheap
-Jeep parts are readily available and you rarely can't find a part in stock
-Jeeps hold their value really well, better than Toyota and VW even.
Lol......this guy!
