  • Your deck is an important feature of your home. Like any part of that investment, you need to protect it and keep it looking great. To do that, you can either hire a deck staining service to refinish it every couple of years, or if you don't do that, you may have to replace the whole thing. The best option is staining your deck yourself by using a sprayer like the Wagner Control Pro 130 sprayer. Read more about this sprayer on our website: bit.ly/30oUufp
    Browse more DIY products to use on your next home improvement project: www.wagnerspra...
    Step 1: Prep Your Deck
    If your deck boards and railings are in great shape, all you have to do is clean them to prepare for staining. If there are any rough spots or chipping paint/stain, you should sand the deck beforehand.
    An important first step is to always power wash your deck, which gets rid of the dirt, grime and any old finish that might be flaking off. Wait a few days for the deck boards to completely dry and ensure you have a day or two of good weather before staining your deck. You should also mask and cover any areas you don’t want stained such as your home’s siding, windows, shrubs, and grass.
    Another part of prep work is choosing the right stain. There are a lot of stain options so make sure you do research and find a coating that suits your preferences, deck type, and climate. How much stain you'll need depends on the size of your deck. Read the label on the can and also consider how long it's been since the surface was last stained. The longer it's been, the more stain the wood will likely absorb.
    Step 2: Start Staining the Railings
    Now you’re ready to start staining! We chose the Control Pro 130 because this deck is pretty big with railings and a ton of spindles. It's great for big jobs and it's very easy to set up and use. It sprays using low pressure, giving you more control and an even finish. Plus, because of its high efficiency airless design, it results in up to 55% less over-spray than other airless sprayers.
    Start by staining the railings first, then the deck boards and gradually work your way to the stairs. This will ensure you don’t step in any wet stain. When paint or stain spraying a deck, you always want to follow the woodgrain on an area like a railing. That means you'd be alternating between moving up and down and side to side. You can either adjust the tip guard to change spray pattern directions, or just rotate your hand. You will need to spray the spindles from a couple different angles to ensure all sides are evenly covered. If you are stain spraying with an HVLP sprayer like a FLEXiO you have the option to change the pattern width to narrow.
    Step 3: Stain the Deck Boards
    When the railings are stained, move onto the deck boards.
    Keep the spray gun moving anytime you're pulling the trigger. Otherwise you will end up with heavy spots and possible drips. It’s always best to cover lightly and fill in with heavier coats as you go. Keep a brush on hand to quickly blend in any drips or runs.
    As with the railings you’ll want to move with the grain of the wood and work in long passes. This might mean walking from one end to the other. Spray each board to ensure each one is completely covered and coated. You will want to start closest to the house and work your ways towards the stairs to avoid having to step in wet stain.
    Step 4: Enjoy the New Deck!
    Make sure to let the stain fully dry (see the manufacturer’s instructions/guidelines) before placing furniture and other items on your newly stained deck. Your deck will quickly transform from a blotchy, dirty, weather-beaten deck to a beautiful outdoor space! Perfect for entertaining friends or just relaxing with family.

    I love this! Two friends helped me stain last year and it still took us two full days. Staining by myself this year and have been dreading it. Didn’t think to use a sprayer.
    But I have a tip, if you put the top strap of your mask around the top part of the crown of your head it seals better and won’t pull down so badly - signed a nurse who has to wear them all the time 😊

      We're glad this inspired you, Julie! The Control Pro 130 would be a great option for staining your fence. A lot of the same tips can apply as well! Quick tip: The Control Pro 130 comes with a 515 spray tip that's ideal for spraying latex paint. If you're spraying stain, we'd recommend purchasing a 413 or 311 spray tip.

      If you used a water-based stain then you'd simply flush the sprayer with water. If you used an oil-based stain then you'd have to use a thinner like mineral spirits.

    Do you have to thin a clear coat deck sealer like Thompson's deck sealer? If so, what would be best used to thin it?

    • @Wagner-Spraytech
      @Wagner-Spraytech  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for your question! Thompson's wood sealers work great with Wagner sprayers, since they offer both oil-based stains and water-based products. These airless sprayers do not require thinning, but they do require the correct tip size. The maximum tip size for the Control Pro 130 is .015", which is the 515 that comes with the package. Tip size information is usually found on the back of the can. Let us know if you have any more questions! Happy staining!😀

    • @Wagner-Spraytech
      @Wagner-Spraytech  2 года назад +2

      It's important to make sure the deck boards are dry after power washing to make sure the new stain adheres correctly. That can generally take 1-3 days depending on your deck boards, climate and weather.
