I better not start saying "droving through a neighborhood" lol
😂😂
Great content, as I'm considering staining my fence this summer. Question I do have...it was put up by a contractor, and is stained Douglas fir. I have no clue what it was stained with, but it was delivered pre-stained. UV exposed areas are beginning to grey after about a year and a half. The pickets are also rough sawn. How should I prep this fence, and what considerations should I have for the existing stain?
Biggest mistake people make is not watching Joe Everest or Caleb Roth
😂very true!
😂😂
Thank you
Very welcome, thanks for watching!
hello Joe. I just discovered your channel because I was looking for an answer to a fencing question. Can I use salt water beach logs for fence posts ? These logs are high and dry, sun bleached, but solid.
I don’t see why not, they likely won’t have the same lifespan as an actual fence post but they’ll look really neat!
Which is better for a hot climate area. Paint or stain?
This was a great event in NC
Agreed!
Stain/sealed mine a week or two after putting it up. Bought the most expensive product Olympic Max 3 year (semi-transparent) - it stained and put a sealer on the outside that protects. Sprayed and back brushed. Also spray at both angles in between boards, and sprayed the top and bottom ends. Applied 3 yrs later, another 3 yrs and another 5 years. Touched up some spots last year with an oil based stain left over from previous years. Cannot buy the same product now as they are low VOC and do not do the same thing. Fence is not gray and is in great condition. Fence is 20 years old. Searching for a product that I can do another coat with.
You say 'most expensive product' but its that per gallon, or per square foot? Ready Seal appears rather cheap per gallon, but one gallon only covers 124 sq ft.
My cedar fence has sat for a year 🤦🏼♂️ After your first point, I wish I would have gotten it on sooner. Lots of UV and sprinkler effects now! 🤬 So, what product will cover that up? And it's starting to cool down, what must the temperature be in order to spray before winter?
pressure wash wait a couple days then stain easy
What applicator tool would you say is more fool-proof? Sprayer, roller, brush?
Hello from Winnipeg, Canada! I just had a fence installed last year using Brown pressure treated wood. Should brown pressure treated wood be stained? If so, what would be best for my climate? Oil or water based?
Yes, Oil Based.
Caleb should be a famous actor
I have Expert stain in Honey for our cedar fence. Are there any comments about spray vs brush vs roller application?
All work, spraying is most efficient for a company that does them repeatedly. For homeowners brushing works really well.
I've had a new fence installed at my home but it's been raining non stop for 6 weeks. Is my cedar fence in trouble? I plan on using ready seal exterior wood stain.
in the same situation!
It’s sad that this guy doesn’t actually respond to some of these comments and questions
ive never used a sprayer like that ive always used a weed sprayer and have a brush with me go on real heavy with the spray and work it in with a brush for an even coat works great every time
Curious do you use oil based or water based in the pump sprayer? Do you do the front or back(with the rail) first or does it matter?
How often does one need to reapply stain to a fence?
Would or could it last longer if you use cinder block foundation with four-foot fence on top?
What’s the best technique for spraying the side of a face that has the horizontal 2x4’s? I find that I get a lot of build up of stain right under and right below those horizontal boards and it’s hard to brush them out (water based stain). Thanks!
Would this maybe be a situation where it’s better to work against the grain (left to right) instead of top to bottom?
@@kylebaker8224 I've no experience in this type of stuff but I think I understand your problem 😅
The tops and bottoms of you 2x4 so the sides that are 2" are difficult to stain evenly because you've a small gap between each that you have to work between?
Maybe staining the 2x4s and then installing would work better? I could imagine it taking longer but I'm not sure what kind of time constraints you have. If it's for a personal fence doing it this way and taking a little longer might be a trade off you're willing to make. If it's for a customer you could try over stating the completion time to allow for a perfect stain finish
I suppose if they're rushing you to finish it boils down to them having to deal with imperfections in rushed work and you toning down the standards you hold yourself to. You can only do as well as you can with the time provided. Hope this helps 🤙
Im sickened, I just had a friend with a "sprayer" do my half acre of fencing and it looks terrible. I don't know what to do. It looks like it was done by kindergartener. It is awful. I don't know how to get it corrected or even if it can be corrected. Any advice is very welcome.
Solid coat stain that puppy…unless you want to use chemicals and strip it and power wash it
Would it be better to pressure wash the fence first if you did way over a year for the vents to set?
If you were to choose between something likes Thompsons water seal or Olympic waterguard for the diyer which would you go with?
Waterguard. I can’t remember can’t express that enough.
I messed up and bought indoor stain and used it on my whole fence, I stained it before I put it up and let it dry 😮 looks nice so far but is there any way to fix it?
What indoor stain did you apply ?
Do you recommend using an exterior sealer / primer first on new cedar fencing, prior to using a solid color fence stain? All water based. The back of the stain cans generally will recommend a primer for cedar/ redwood to prevent tannin bleed, but never knew if it was common practice.
I’d follow the manufacturer’s recommendation. We don’t have experience with water based stains as we use oil based.
Great video! Speaking of proper use... how about using the word "driven" instead of "droven" 😜Just pickin" on ya! Your video was super helpful: drove me to the moon and back!!!
What is the best type of stain to use?
We prefer oil-based stains from Expert Professional Wood Care
Would you recommend hanging the pickets first, before staining, or staining them before hanging? Because my concern with staining them after is not being able to get in between the pickets easily. Also, you didn't mention anything about the need to sand the pickets. The pickets I've seen at like Home Depot seem to have a rather coarse texture...would sanding them make them smoother and better looking?
Pre-staining is definitely better. Rough sawn lumber is typically left that way, no sanding.
But if it’s pressure treated, won’t you have to wait a few weeks? Leaving time for the boards to warp?
I’m always surprised and maybe wrong on how people never sand a fence before spraying yes more time of course but the stain will last longer.
So wood as you all know has fibers on it kinda like little finger poking out reaching to the sky.
Well when you don’t sand the wood them fingers are still poking out with Microscopic openings when you spray your not filling every one of them openings or covering them so to speak allowing water to Penetrate the wood .
You would never take a ruff cut peace of wood making a peace of furniture and just stain and Varnish over it and call it quits you want it to look good hold up to wear and tear so you sand it to except the stain.
Well the fence needs to have that type of attention to its wood and going to be put through very harsh conditions rain sun wind the elements of nature.
So people always wonder why the fence doesn’t look good after so many months or years the wood didn’t get the love it needs to with stand the condition tossed it’s way .
A tree has all the protection it needs but when we strip it we take them away leaving it naked and bare well it’s unprotected.
It’s a longer process and you have to either Weigh out the the situation or keep dealing with a fence that looks weathered in a month or a fence that looks great in years.
Of course that’s up to the home owner.
I need the stain color on this video I’m looking to stain my fence add I love this color please tell me
It’s Chestnut, can be found here: restorativewoodproducts.com/products/semi-transparent-wood-stain-sealer?variant=39893506359319
Battling with people's conventional wisdom is a battle of futility. I can tell a customer that you never have to wait a year to stain a fence, and why. Their head might be bobbing in an agreeing way, but their eyes are saying "this guy is trying to trick me." It's proof that when something is said enough times, it becomes true.
Biggest mistake most people make is never treating the top of any fence .
Great point!
And bottom
@@rainacherienne1010 yep and the bottom your correct
I just installed a 200 foot fence. I’m planning on painting it in the summer. Any recommendation before I start painting? Do I need to stain it before I start painting?
No stain or paint make a choice
Don't paint it use a solid color stain
Is it a good idea to power wash if restaining a fence that is 5-6 years old?
It’s not a bad idea, but with lower pressure. You want to rinse off any dirt and bird droppings off of the fence before staining it.
@@JoeEverest - Thx Joe
You never told us what the mistake was. I don't know what not to do which is what i was hoping for pointers on.
Judge Judy would have pulled him up on the word "droven" ...
🤣
I almost stopped listening when I heard this 😂😂
I'm a pro stainer, at least 150 pairs of pants a year.
>>>>>>>>>>>Ready Seal
Why didn’t he say that you need to back brush to create even application. 1 more person spraying from top to bottom and another person back rushing from top to bottom. Can never go wrong this way with
One of the benefits of this stain is it doesn’t require back brushing!
As soon as it's dry stain it. Don't have to wait for anything else.
Agreed!
All about marketing 🤩🤩
0:16 Droven?
Cannot stain a fence two weeks after it's been built with treated wood.
2 coats of stain?
They lost all credibility with me by using different types of wood on those demonstration panels. It’s obviously going to look better with the cedar, then it will with the treated pine.
The panels were all pre-built treated pine from HD.
dont think should be getting people spraying fence with no mask or eyewear
Just do Vinyl fence and avoid all this hassle.
If you like installing vinyl every 6 years lol
I recently purchased a seven year old home. The fence was never sprayed. It’s really rough. Should I just leave it?
I’d recommend cleaning and staining it to prolong the life!
Thanks
I would use a 6% bleach and soap pre wash in a pump sprayer and scrub brush then rinse the fence then some oxalic acid about 12 to 16 ounces per gallon of warm water in a pump sprayer. Then stain. There are a lot of videos on RUclips showing this. Then stain and seal
